I hadn't found a new place to get my haircut since moving to NYC, so I've been letting it grow out a lot between cuts, but as I was preparing to go out of town for a conference I thought I REALLY needed to get a haircut before I went. I had tried several nearby salons, and had some decent haircuts but none had been GREAT, and all were expensive. They quoted me $45 for a cut and blow dry, so I was preeeetty skeptical by the drastic price difference. However, I decided What-The-Heck and walked on over to the salon. The staff and owner are all very sweet. They are not your young hipster hairstylist, these are stylist that have decades of experience and their clients are the same. I got my hair shampooed, cut, blow dried and styled in 45 min and was surprised with the skill and efficiency of Liza (my stylist). I got a not-so-great haircut at another salon that made me extra nervous to get my hair cut this time around, especially because I wanted a more drastic change, going from long hair to shoulder-length. I made an appointment over the phone with Liza day of. Liza was very personable. I don't know any of the hair terms, so I just showed her some reference photos. The owner, Kim, has been cutting my hair since I went to a pediatrician. As a matter of fact, we referred his kids to my pediatrician. So I suppose I've been going to him since before he went to my pediatrician, too. Excellent styling, men and women. Full coloring, nails, etc on site for those interested. I've just experienced hair-life at the end of his scissors, so I cannot speak with authority on his other services, but his clientele always seem quite content. Everyone in there is a regular and Kim knows them by name. Like Cheers. Not only is Kim an excellent barber, he also is a travel agent for trips to Cambodia. MK Salon is a great little find in nyc. I have been using the same barber for years named Danny. He does a great job every time and he has a great sense of humor. One way to find Danny there is to find the booth with the stuffed animal that says "I'm a beautician and not a magician" :) MK has an excellent mix of beauticians and barbers and from top to bottom they are all a very pleasant and happy team that will work hard to please their customers. read more

Yesterday was my first time back in any salon for over nine months. I decided to find a salon close to my apartment (no longer interested in a long salon commute post-COVID), so I did a lot of research to find a place in my neighborhood that would have a reasonable combination of good value and quality. I'm glad to share that I believe I found that at MK! Over the last several months, my hair had fallen into serious disrepair--fraying ends, breakage, and even some hair loss due to stress. Kelly, my stylist at MK, made me feel so at ease from the beginning of my appointment--she was so friendly and kind but also kept her mask on for the entire appointment and always made sure I was comfortable. She listened to my concerns about my hair and did a great job of assessing the damage and knowing what needed to be done. I walked out the salon with super fresh layers and much healthier looking hair--feeling like a million dollars after several months of feeling self-conscious about how I'd let my hair go during the pandemic...and I feel confident that I paid the lowest price for a wash/cut/blowout that I would have paid at any quality salon in this neighborhood. Since I've repatriated to North Carolina and I still love to have my hair done by Alex. He is straightforward, will NOT use a razor on your hair, and gives the best cut. Liza did my hair for a special event recently and she did a fantastic job. I got SO many compliments on my hair. She took her time with me and carefully delivered the voluminous but still elegant look I was going for. At first, I was concerned as she was spraying a fair amount of hairspray - she assured me it was soft hairspray and needed to keep the style (I reshaped my hair just a little bit when I got home to make it a little more my look) - she was right. My hair held all night. It was full and elegant and stylish. She knows what she is doing! Sometimes I feel like I get my hair done for an event and it is only slightly better than I could do myself. Liza is the best colorist I have ever worked with. She also gives a great haircut & blow out. I have sent several of my good friends to her, all of them have found her professional & top notch & have remained her clients. I have followed Liza to every salon she worked at over the last 10 plus years. I was a model , on several soap operas for many years & stage productions. During that time I had many many so called " professionals"- all in the hair dressers unions etc mess with my hair & often ruin it. Liza restored my hair to health & colors it perfectly without any damage. I was shocked when she could match my real base color exactly when we first met . I also HIGHLY recommend her for highlights. Frankly I recommend her for everything. On one last note- I have read the negative comment from Hela M. and one other. In response to Hela, I have a very hard time believing that anyone left that salon in tears. I go to Liza about once every 6 weeks for over 10 years & she is always working on a few people at the same time. ( having a client sitting under the drier for color allows the colorist the time to multi task if you are able, which she is ) I have NEVER seen anyone leave her without a very happy face & beautiful hair.
