I had a great conversation with the owners and cook, Gus, and his lovely wife behind the counter. I ordered the lamb gyro plate with the french fries - and Gus said, you can get fries anywhere, try my rice! And so he served up the rice and asked me to try it right then and there. I asked for my feta on the side, and again he was insistent I try it then. The portions are gigantic - it was enough for at least 2 meals. We talked about his background in ethnic cooking. I was impressed they opened up around the time Covid-19 was raging and they've managed to stay in business despite opening up during a difficult time. The food was good, the portions are generous, making it a good value for the money, I enjoyed meeting the proprietors, and I'm looking forward to returning and trying out some of his soups and other lunch items.

Saturday morning, I called in a carry-out order for a Ham, Egg, and Cheese breakfast sandwich on wheat, and on Monday, I walked in and ordered the Chicken Enchiladas dinner for carry-out. Both were really excellent and a GREAT value with plenty of food! I could only finish half of each at each sitting and had the rest as leftovers later on those respective days. Dine-in and carry-out is available, and the menu hangs above the kitchen and consists of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, as well as some Mexican favorites, such as tacos, buritos, and enchiladas, with choice of chicken, beef, or pork. His website, Facebook page, Google page, and Yelp page all show slightly different business hours, but the key takeaways are 1) open for breakfast and lunch Monday-Saturday, and 2) the food is delicious at a great value! This last photo shows the Summer business hours will be 8am-2pm Monday-Saturday, starting June 13th, but you safely call in a carry-out order or dine-in during those times this week, too.

While that's no longer the case, the space still pays tribute to its roots -- shelves lined with kitchen knick-knacks, butcher-block counters, and a display of local provisions that hint at its past. Chef-owner Karen Bell leads the way here, and you can feel her touch throughout -- from the creative menu to the casual-elegant vibe. The décor blends exposed brick and warm wood with soft light and a friendly hum from the open kitchen. Our server, Matthew R., had only been with Bavette a couple of weeks, but his background in restaurant management showed. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and offered great suggestions. Before our sandwiches arrived, we shared a cup of pork and tomatillo pozole topped with cabbage slaw and a dollop of sour cream. It was piping hot, bright, and deeply flavorful -- the kind of starter that makes you stop talking for a minute just to enjoy the next spoonful.
