I must say that I picked this place based solely on the fact that they had an appetizer of artisanal meats and cheeses. I definitely was not disappointed when we arrived and ordered this! We went for Steak night. Nice atmosphere with live music, the room was filled to the rim with patrons and their was a collection of different tables large, small, and petite booths. The wine selection was limited but there was a good selection. I got the South African red. Pretty smooth and light. The steak was pretty good for $13 bucks and includes one side, onion ring strings and a nice house salad. Appetizers queso with chili was mediocre and I could have done without it but I ate the whole bowl. Lol. The waitstaff was attentive and fast to respond. My complaint was parking which is limited. It took 20 mins to find parking and I was literally in an episode of parking wars. However it's DTown and one shouldn't expect anything less. Ok, I'm posting a 3 star for this trip only because the steak was actually really good when I tried a piece of my friend's steak. Tonight I got the pepperoni pizza and I feel like for the price ($14 for a 10-inch) it should have been way better than what was offered. Typically I like going to Phoenicia Deli on Westheimer, but sadly I was disappointed on the pizza. Next time I'm going to try something different. read more

As a rule, MKT BAR usually has decent food and indifferent service, but trying to watch the World Cup final here was a truly dreadful experience. The feed froze every couple of minutes on all but one screen (mounted conveniently in a far corner), and our complaints blandly dismissed by our waitress with the non-explanation that "oh, that's a problem with Dish, they're working on it." Again, the food itself was good, but the actual speed of service was dramatically slower that usual. The normal lackadaisical pace was now entirely glacial, with our waitress absent for long stretches of time and part of our order only arriving after angrily complaining to a manager. Clearly they expected a full house, as the place was set up in anticipation, but apparently they made little if any effort to have sufficient staff available to meet demand. read more

This place is a market with bar and cafe. The food is fresh and tasty. Their menu varies daily according to market availability. They have the perfect variety of gourmet/specialty items for a visitor staying nearby. They also have foods from different countries for all tastes. Highly recommend a visit if you want to bring a couple of goodies back to your hotel. read more

I stopped through for a drink on a Sunday afternoon. This bar is really cute and trendy, and the wait staff was super nice. Kevin took care of me! Note: this is a wine and beer bar. No liquor. I really hate that I had just missed the Sunday brunch live music, but I enjoyed my time here nonetheless. this is all from the perspective of someone who's from out of town: i really thought downtown htx would have better places to grab a bite. i don't know if we just had a bad experience, maybe an awkward time of the day to get some food, but i was less than thrilled with this place for the money we spent there. caught the tail end of happy hour and got $6 sangrias that were not so great and very small in size compared to other places. we started with the queso which absolutely was overpriced to a point of shock value.....$9 is absolutely insane. there is many different types of cheese in it apparently but in my opinion, the pita chips it was served with had better flavor. it also was pretty lukewarm, when we got it (it came out super fast, again, maybe things were just off cause it was an awkward time of day to eat dinner) i got the kamtastic & my friend got the austin street burger. she really loved hers which was great but i didn't really care for the chicken sandwich. the presentation was great but the chicken itself had no real flavor and there was an overwhelming amount of spicy brown mustard to the point that it took over any other flavor. the zatar fries were pretty good and flavorful but slightly cold too like the queso :/ our tab came out to $62 for two people (that's with 2 happy hour priced drinks, an appetizer and 2 entrees) which i think is pretty steep unless the food was absolutely great quality and a great experience. it's a shame when situations like this happen cause i only come to houston every once in awhile and i feel like i have the best dining experiences 90% of the time. i think based on how many great reviews this place has, it had to be the time of day and food we ordered and id be willing to try it again. also i will say, the service was very nice. read more

I really love the food counter in the Phoenicia store, so I wanted to like this spin off too. Unfortunately, I ordered the Kamtastic, and I found most things on my plate to be bland. The pluses were the fried chicken breast itself (pretty tasty) and the two pickle spears (the same you get in your shawarma). The ambiance was hip, if rather loud. I have been here one time and I was adamant about reviewing it shortly after. A few weeks back I walked by this place walking to discovery green for a movie in the park. Glancing in, the layout looked awesome. Dim lights, diverse crowd and smiles filled the room. I recalled David N. and Farrah's reviews and insisted I come back when time allowed to check it out. I finally made it back. Walking in, we were greeted immediately and were told to have a seat where we would like. Apparently every third Friday they have a craft brew event with flights of different types of beers. We came in as this event was winding down and the night crowd started to show. One thing I will give this place, as noted before, is that the crowd is diverse and unpretentious. You had all ages, all races, people with kids, people with dogs and people with bright red pants (im looking at you, guy). This crowd mingled without a care in the world over great music (think early 90's hip hop, j-dilla-ish) and well thought out drinks. Lets get down to the nitty gritty. We started off with two beers. We ordered the santé fe happy camper ipa and bavik pilsner. The happy camper, like most ipa's, was full-bodied and very flavorful. The bavik pilsner was a much lighter Belgian which turned out to be extremely refreshing. Like many of my other reviews state, I am quite the beer snob so I tip my hat to your beer selections Mkt Bar. Food wise we started off with the mkt queso topped with beef kibe meat. If your inner fatass comes out like mine, this will hit home. Remember those late night taco cabana runs (through the drive thru, not the runs guys) where you indulged in drunken nachos and it was, in that moment, heaven on earth? This is that feeling... but sober. The queso was thick, flavored with grilled jalapeños and roasted peppers and the beef topping was the cherry on top. The chips were guilt free oven baked pita chips which I could've eaten them alone. For the main course we had the Mkt sliders. This is where my taste buds raised the white flag and bowed down. Think: pork sliders with a twist. It was actually pulled lamb & pickled cabbage stuffed in a thin pita bread. The lamb was cooked perfectly, the cabbage was pickled perfectly and the bread tasted fresh. Much like the queso, it tasted very guilt free and fresh. I am a HUGE fan of pulled pork but the mkt sliders took the cake and then some in my standards. To top it all off we ended our meal with the apple baklava. Not only was this amazing, but the presentation and portion was awesome. This sealed the deal on what is an amazing restaurant. the few negative reviews i have seen is based on service. our service was not only attentive, but they were also friendly, funny and personable. they gave great recommendations and made sure we had a great experience. the music was also on point, DJ Klinch had a nice mixup of old school and new school, the sound level was tolerable as you could hear the music but also hear your date. I am a huge downtown advocate. I wish nothing but the best in the growth of downtown. Every metropolitan city in the world has a thriving and growing downtown with the exception of Houston. With the development of discovery green, multiple bars on Dallas and now mkt bar it is headed in the right direction and for this I am happy. read more

We went last Thursday night I got the Steak it was very good, it came with a huge salad and a bake potatoe. Even though it was cheap it was very yummy they could have easily charged double. I also had two mimosas which were perfection. The service was good but not great, that was the only part of the evening that was not up to par. read more

MKT Bar is located inside of the Phoenicia specialty foods market. You can get access to MKT bar through the market but their main entrance is on Austin St. There is a parking garage that has parking just for Phoenicia shoppers but also if you want to hang out at MKT. We walked in from the market side and the place was hopping with chatter and music from a DJ. That evening we ordered the vegan pizza which only had a drizzle of olive oil, sweet potatoes and red cabbage. There was suppose to have some pesto on it but we couldn't taste it. We ordered the ceviche but I have had much better. It was a bit too acidic and the pita it came with was more burnt than toasted. The Za'atar Shoestring Fries, hand-cut fries with lemon zest, spicy Moroccan ketchup and garlic sauce were one of the highlights. Very delicious and pairs really nicely with a light beer. Not your typical fries. And last but not least---the creme brulee trio---little cups of heaven in my mouth. Tasty and wish I didn't have to share. Service was consistent that night but then again there were several servers assisting with the UYE but they were all very helpful and friendly. Would like to give MKT another try and I am hoping I can make it to one of their famous steak nights. read more

I always end up here after a night out downtown! If I keep coming back there must be a reason! The atmosphere is great, and usually when I am here they have a great DJ. They do have nightly events, and I keep wanting to check out one of their other nights, but I always seem to end up here on a Saturday night. The food and beverages are both good. I would pass on the gelato (only thing I've had that I wasn't a fan of). If you get the chocolate cake, be warned it's a monster - share :-) read more

Fun and happening place. The waiters were engaging and attentive even thought it was crowded. I had some hummus and plantain chips for starters. The hummus had a grainy texture that I just could not swallow. The plantain chips were good but they are sprinkled with the same spices that are in the hummus but I was able to shake some off or pull from the bottom. I like spices but the garlic powder needs to dissolved other wise I feel like I am eating sand. For my entree I ordered a house salad with chicken. Basic salad, perfectly cooked moist chicken pieces and just the right amount of dressing. read more

I am right between 4 and 5 stars but I will go with 5. This bar and restaurant, inside.the Phoenecia grocery store (another cool place) has an incredible menu and an incredibly welcoming staff. Night 1 of going, I tried (after preplanning my meals as I usually do when I visit houston, and after vetting with my bf) the Chilean seabass which came with a delicious caponata and grilled polenta. The seabass was perfectly cooked and so tasty. Nice bits of crust on the outside, while also being super flaky and tasting like buttery crab. Insane. The service from Darren and Leslie was great. Food came.out slowly but they were apologetic and attentive. Night 2, per my vetting process, I tried the squashed pizza. Oh mama. Crust was crispy but fresh and perfectly cooked. Toppings were insanely good and seasoned perfectly. My server was great once again. on mondays, they have game night and it seems perfectly wonderful for friends or families with kids. Tuesday night there was a DJ and gentleman with leather bell bottoms and roller blades taking pictures with people and dancing. Houston keeps pulling me in, and places like this make me think I would be pretty content becoming a Houstonian! read more

For an urban bar in a dense area (downtown Houston) it's like a hidden jewel. On a rainy Halloween night I went and felt so dry and safe parking in the garage, walking through mysterious doors/stairwells to arrive at this happinin' party spot where various groups of friends were serendipitously intermingling! What a night to remember. There was even a baby! Ah, I can't say enough good stuff about this place. Just go, try it for yourself. This place is great. There is parking in the high rise and on Tuesdays and Thursdays it is steak night. You get a Mediterranean salad which is good portion and really really good. It has this delicious salad dressing, olives, mozzarella cheese, etc. Then they bring out the juicy steak with this green chimichurri sauce and fried onion strings and a side of a twice baked potatoe. All this for $12.99 and the steak is good and juicy! You can't beat this deal! There was live music when we went on a Thursday and it was packed. read more

So.... reviews looked pretty solid. Coming in from out of town to the Rockets game. Wow. Service was slow, VERY slow. I'm not sure who dropped the ball. Was it management not staffing up accordingly? Was our server new? Was it much busier than normal? It took over 20 minutes for our beers to come to the table and we ordered apps for the table. Our whole time spent here was over 1 hour. In Houston for a couple of nights, I Yelp'd to find a place for dinner near my hotel and Mkt Bar came up. Since it was Tuesday, it was "Steak Night", which for some reason, was "speaking to me". I walked to Mkt Bar, had a seat and ordered the steak, along with a baked potato and a Japanese draught lager, which came in a very small glass, but cost $8. The salad was excellent. The steak arrived and even though I ordered it medium, it was pretty soft, with the exception of the ends of it which were more medium. The steak was very flavorful, but I was chewing more than I wanted to. The baked potato was only a half of a potato and came with some cheese on top. It was okay. Mkt Bar reminds me of a Whole Foods market that opened up a sit-down restaurant. The food is okay, but nothing was outstanding. There was a couple of good jazz musicians playing on the stage, so that was entertaining. The actual market attached to Mkt Bar has some wonderful foods from all over the world and is worth a trip here just for some speciality foods that you're not going to be able to get elsewhere. read more

I have been to MKT BAR twice in the last 2 weeks. The atmosphere is fantastic! Very urban and comfortable and not pretentious. The self described "light bites" are just right for a glass or two of wine. The ceviche is surprisingly fresh. Tasted the gelato and it was reminiscent of what I had in Florence last summer. Delicious! Having said all of that, on both visits, it was clear that the waitstaff knows nothing about wine and more specifically, about the wine sold at the "wine bar". The waiter awkwardly inserted himself into my group's gathering and at one point asked us what we did for a living and where we worked. A definite no-no. He also repeatedly made mistakes about our wine orders, mispronounced the wine (said Pinot "Nore" instead of Pinot "N-wah"), and took an extraordinary amount of time to serve our drinks. Poor showing for the waitstaff in a wine bar not to know anything about wine. MKT BAR is convenient and fits my style but I will return to Quattro at the Four Seasons for wine after work if these issues are not quickly addressed. read more
