Atmosphere over food here. The menu is definitely catered to "fusion crowds" (take that however you want to) which is not surprising given that the restaurant is in Montclair, NJ. If you frequent NYC Japanese / sushi restaurants, you will be fairly disappointed in the food quality. But, if you are looking for Nobu vibes, this may be a good little date spot. Food was overly salty. Sushi quality was disappointing. Cocktails and atmosphere were pretty good. There were a few kinks that need ironing out in regards to service. Super friendly wait staff, but not very attentive. But, I'll chalk that up to it being a new restaurant. Food is decent though nothing to rave about, but overall experience is just OK given heavy price points. Most menu items are replicas of dishes you can get in any reasonable good Asian restaurant. Is the sushi the very best quality? No. Is it good enough? Yes. Would you pay double them? Not if there are other options for real sushi fans. Is the 32oz porterhouse worth the $145 tag? Not really, when one can get much better value and quality at reputable steakhouses. The knockoff bibimbap was interesting as a carb base but just middling as a standalone entree, and that's before it being absurdly overpriced. Desserts were a tad disappointing. Cocktails and sake are NYC premium-priced but fortunately beer on tap is more modest. Food portions are not on the generous side, so diners are likely to have to order extra dishes than would seem, especially to share. Service was friendly and enthusiastic which is a plus, and there's a convenient small parking lot across the quiet street which is helpful. Overall one is definitely paying a big premium for the brand rather than for anything compelling about the food or drinks. There's a slick-ish vibe as a new spot that's novel and may be interesting to some, but could get tired with time. Happy to have tried but not a repeat visit type place. I was really looking forward to celebrating my anniversary here--and I was not disappointed! First, a big thank you to our server Marla for helping make the night truly special. Her recommendations were spot on, and the drinks (especially the Paloma) were excellent. We started with the tuna pizza and Wagyu carpaccio--both dishes were beautifully presented and tasted even better. For sushi, we ordered the spicy yellowfin roll and shrimp tempura roll. Absolutely delicious--some of the best sushi I've ever had. Our final dish was the black cod, which was light, flaky, and amazing. Even the broccoli side dish was next-level--this place somehow made broccoli exciting! Every dish was a 10/10. Morimoto is a must. While some of the food was insanely good, the gulf between brand expectation and experience was significant. Highlights: - Very friendly service. - Appetizers: Tacos 2 ways and corn tempura were astounding in flavor and presentation. - Mains: Great flavor combo on the prime rib and mushroom sauce. Lowlights: - Ambience: It seems the place was more focused on being a "scene" or nightclub than a restaurant. Background music could've been lower so that table conversation didn't require screaming. - Though friendly, the service was very slow. I don't know if this was an issue with the service itself or the kitchen, but something was definitely off. - Related to the last point, the mains took a very long time to show up. So long that my prime rib, though cooked, was actually colder than room temperature (and the stone plate it was on was not hot at all). The server offered to bring it back to the kitchen - they cooked it a bit and then it came back on the same stone plate as room temperature which puzzled me since I would've expected some sizzle or smoke. The manager was extremely nice and confirmed that she shouldn't have been able to touch the stone plate - she then offered a replacement and free dessert. The replacement prime rib was much better in terms of temp. At the end of the day, the brand and price point should have offered an experience to match, but in my opinion it fell short. read more

What a disaster! So excited to eat at this esteemed chef's restaurant and what a disappointment. Too many issues to list but here's the highlights: - ordered drinks at the bar and were told they were out of two out of the three ordered. Waited 15 minutes for the drinks we finally got which were being concocted from liquid in open plastic deli containers (so weird). - The restaurant is beautiful but the service is horrendous. Apps came out quickly and were okay. Then waited 45 minutes for our entrees. We had ordered a tomahawk steak which was featured on the restaurant's Instagram. The manager came and told us they were "having problems" (which we could hear from the huge crashes coming from the kitchen every 15 minutes) and if we still wanted the tomahawk it would be another 30-40 minutes! So we got a different cut of steak. In the meantime, we ran out of water and steak knives were basically thrown on the table. The waitress was not trained in fine dining in any way. We had to ask for several of the side dishes we ordered before we got them. Dirty dishes were never cleared. At the end of the meal, two bus people came to the table and were having a conversation with each other across the table and over us. They took away my daughter's plate as she was still eating, never asking if we were done. The waitress said that dessert was on the house but we said we didn't want it. The food was good but not great. The sushi was cut so thick and served on ice which was just weird. The manager said that they comped out drinks and apps but we purchased our drinks at the bar so discount for the awful night was not what it should have been. The atmosphere was chaotic with staff running everywhere or alternatively complaining with each other in the corners. At one point the bartender wheeled a full garbage bin through the dining room to the back of the restaurant. I've never seen anything like it. The worst part was Morimoto was there so this was being done under his helm. Will not be back and that's $350 I'll regret spending for quite some time. read more

Very formulated experience and flashy vibe. Food was excellent, all seafood was fresh and expertly prepared. Service was attentive and friendly, offering suggestions and explanations. There are Morimoto logos everywhere and a promotional video that plays outside the bar room. There is Morimoto sake and tea (no decaf or herbal). The chocolate cake tasted like stale icebox. Can get expensive especially if adding Waygu or table side rice dishes are ordered. read more

I have been to three different Morimoto restaurants and always had a great dinner. I was thrilled Morimoto was coming to Montclair. But, this is clearly just a branding of a restaurant. The food was substandard. The nigiri and rolls were below par. My local corner sushi restaurant served better sushi. As far as the entrees, the blackened cod was ok and their version of kop dol bim bim bop was outrageously priced with a topping of flavorless wagyu. Dinner for 2 with two drinks each with tip was over $400. Save your money. This place does not last a year. read more

This is the latest hype restaurant in Monclair. The Morimoto brand is not doing so well in NYC anymore, so they decided to expand into the nearby suburbs. First impression, they did a good job in creating the "cool" vibe with dark decor, over-sized bar and loud music. It all goes downhill from there. The hostess is confused and unorganized. The staffs are overwhelmed. The worst parts are the sticky flooring, messy and unclean bathroom. They charge $20 for valet parking, and $175 for a 6oz Waygu steak. You can get better steak and better sushi elsewhere; but MM has the niche that they serve both (just beware that the quality is average at best especially at the prices they charge). They need to do better if they want to survive once the hype is over. read more

The minute I saw the velvet ropes, I was worried. And my first impression proved right. Morimoto has taken on the curse of the other, ultimately doomed, restaurants that once occupied this space--namely, it did not read the room, or rather its locale clientele, correctly. Montclair foodies with actual taste will not find this place appealing. The dark, overdone decor that felt like a 70 mafioso's idea of classy. The loud, classic rock blaring over the sound system. The pretentious waiters spewing endless unnecessary details about the menu--so fast, it was impossible to take it all in. (The aforementioned loud music did not help matters.) The utterly unappetizing and waaay overpriced sides--the potato thing was dry and tasteless. And the streak I ordered MEDIUM which came out raw , bloody, and was frankly gross, even after it got sent back to be properly cooked. If you want a really good steak served with your pretension, try Faubourg down the street. I'd rather cook at home and that is sayin a lot. read more

Great vibe, attentive waiters....the only thing I would suggest is that the food came a bit too quickly. I'd still go back without hesitation. We had a lovely evening at MM with a few minor complaints. Parking is easy in the lot across the street, or there is valet. We were greeted and seated quickly for our 8:45 PM reservation. My first complaint is the volume. The music is LOUD. I like to chat with my dinner companions while I eat. Also we couldn't hear our server and she couldn't hear us. What we could hear of our server was friendly and informative. The decor is fine. Sort of an 1980's Atlantic City vibe. Not to be picky,but if they are going to charge white linen prices, there should be white linen table clothes and not cheap formica tables with cheap wooden veneer. But no one is going to MM for the atmoshere, it's all about the food. The food was excellent. It ranged from very good high end quality for some dishes to down right remarkable for others. I had a lovely spicy cocktail, called a Green Heat, but as the bar is vey busy, drinks are a bit slow to come out.Highlights of our meal were the popcorn shrimp served with 2 different sauces, the sticky ribs, an astounding sushi appetizer that was torched table side and easily the best tiramisu I've ever had.
