I was excited to try Handroll House because I've been seeing it all over social media lately. I was lucky enough to find parking right down the street and when my girlfriend and I walked in we were seated immediately. It's a very trendy spot with bar seating only and dim lighting. The food was very good, but I just don't think it's worth it to me. We started with the Chili Crunch Cucumber Salad and I actually enjoyed it a lot, but the serving size seemed rather small for it to be $12.50. The same goes for all of the hand rolls. I got the 6 roll set, Baked Crab, and Yuzu Yellowtail rolls for my girlfriend and I. It sounds like a lot of food, but it really isn't. The rolls are on the smaller side; we finished them off in 3-4 bites each. That's not to say we left hungry, but the bill came out to over $100 and we didn't even get any drinks. The fish was all fresh and some of the rolls had some really nice textures to them. I actually enjoyed the food, but for the price I just don't see myself dining here regularly.

What a vibe! Nothing around town is like this (except Butterfish of course) Trendy, fun, delicious and one of a kind. It's an ocean blue bar service only, with hand rolls. With the same management as Butterfish in Rutherford, you know it's going to be good. Fish was fresh! Service was spot on and they even offer a delicious chicken sandwich if you don't eat seafood.

Ordered: Spicy Salmon Roll (~$14 BOGO) Spicy Japanese Yellowtail Roll (~$14 BOGO) Spicy Tuna Roll w Housemade Chili Crunch (~$15 BOGO) Aya's take: First of all, I'm in shock that Handroll House is NJ's first handroll bar ever! Second of all, I could not resist a good BOGO deal. Considering Handroll House is from the same team behind Butterfish (which I still look forward to trying), I knew I was in for a treat. All 3 rolls were incredibly delicious and satisfying! The rice is super seasoned and you can tell based on the color alone. I will say the rice is a bit stickier than other sushi spots and I'd probably go with light rice next time but nonetheless, very good! The salmon, yellowtail, and tuna were all super fresh. I like that the fish wasn't overly chopped. I still got chunks of fish making each bite more enjoyable and you just know what you're eating. I'm a sucker for good packaging and Handroll House nailed it! Classy black boxes, chopsticks, tiny soy sauce squeeze bottles, and of course ginger & wasabi. One suggestion would be to add dividers or try to include the soy sauce, ginger and wasabi inside the box already rather than on the side. I think it'll add to the aesthetic and convenience. If it wasn't for the BOGO deal, I probably wouldn't opt for ordering via UberEats considering the price markup compared to their website. Love that they had this deal going and hope they do that for their specialty rolls which I absolutely want to try! I'm confident they'll do well and can't wait to dine in for their handrolls.

Great spot in Jersey if you're craving handrolls or sushi takeout! Dined here on a Saturday night and though it was pouring out, it was still pretty packed! The design of the bar is cute with the illuminated lights and the their logo plates. The staff were super friendly and accommodating as I had ordered a couple rolls to go after me and my friend finished our handrolls. They were never pushy or made us feel like we were taking too long. The quality of the fish was good but wish they stuffed the handrolls with a bit more fish. Overall, I would come back!

NJ's first and only Handroll house exceeded expectations! All of the seafood was super fresh and each roll is prepared for you right in front of your eyes by their talented sushi chefs (shout out to Chef Julian). Kymani took the best care of us and we always know we're going to be treated well when Jojo is around! The restaurant is a big communal bar and is the perfect spot to dine with your date or a group. We highly recommend this new spot in North Jersey! Check out our full visit here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWt-om9DnwD/?igsh=Yjlhc2lpZXFlZGE1

Visited on the 2nd day of opening! Met Jojo who welcomed us into the restaurant right at opening. He introduced us to the team and chefs and walked us through the menu. Danielle and Ryan took care of us during our lunch experience and were both fantastic, checking in on us after each handroll. We both ordered the 6 piece Handroll set for $42 which included the following: salmon, spicy tuna, spicy scallop, toro, lobster, and crab. They came out one at a time - the rice was perfectly seasoned and warm and the filling was fresh and flavorful. My favorite bites were the spicy tuna and spicy scallop. We also ordered a chili salmon mango Handroll with fresh sliced mango - absolutely delicious. We also took out a cooked eel and cream cheese roll which the chef prepared with nori and we took home to my mom. We spent about $120 for the two sets and two extra rolls. Everything was delicious. The team was warm and welcoming. Looking forward to coming back to try even more items!

The atmosphere of Handroll House is like nothing else in the area. Lit up bar, chefs making handrolls right in front of you, it's so fun! They are using high quality fish and everything was super delish. I especially enjoyed the black miso cod.

A very small and intimate dining experience. I loved the 6 course handroll tasting. this really made me a handroll lover. usually, i would skip them and go straight for sushi. TBH I already want to come back here and just to try some fresh japanese fish served so you can really appreciate the flavor and texture of the fish. every course was thought out and well prepared. The owner, who I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time, is such a positive light in a dark world. and only made my experience that much better. I am definitely going to be trying their first spot Butterfish asap now.

Chicken sandwich was fantastic!

LOVED (almost) everything about this place. It's an enormous square bar with chefs in the middle. Great vibe and cool design. I love the somewhat simple menu. I chose the 6 roll combination with the black cod add on. Legit loved all of it. Very fresh. Slightly warmed rice. Tasty and delicious. Also, don't sleep on the spicy chicken sandwich. Fantastic!! Service was great and attentive. My only complaint is the fact that you didn't always know what roll you were eating. They come out 1 at a time and it's a touch loud so didn't always know. That said, not remotely a deterrent to go back again and again.

Incredible experience! The one and only Handroll Bar in New Jersey. The nori was exceptionally crispy, the rice was perfectly cooked and the fish was so fresh and well seasoned. I sat at the bar (no table bar seats only) and loved watching the chefs hand each roll over the second it was finished. The lobster, spicy tuna, crispy eels and toro were standouts unbelievably fresh. Efficient service and a great vibe for a quick but high-end meal. Definitely recommend this new spot for your next meal if you're craving for Handrolls. Congrats to the Handroll House team, you did a fantastic job. 1000/10

Service is good. Ambiance is nice. The fish is too cold. I personally do not like the fish being too cold. I am sure why it has five stars.

My husband took me to Butterfish for my birthday and wow...what an incredibly elevated dining…read moreexperience. The ambience is nice. Tables are a little close together but no one was next to us for the first half of our meal. Service was excellent. They were super attentive refilling water and taking away plates which helped move the courses along. We opted for the Premium menu and we were not at all disappointed. We were especially surprised with how delicious the scallop sushi was. If I had to say, the Toro hand roll was my least favorite course but overall it was the perfect special treat to celebrate my birthday.

The interior is quite small and the tables are packed in rather close together. It is Rutherford, so BYOB is expected, though they do have very nice looking mocktails (which we didn't try). The hostess was very friendly as was our server. We opted for the Chef Tasting menu, mostly so that we didn't have to make too many decisions. It is the most pricy option, but gives you a real taste of what the restaurant has to offer. I will note that they are able to make substitutions for allergy or dietary accommodations. That said, I was unimpressed with the swap of the A5 Wagyu in both courses for me (I forgot to picture Course 5 - Blue Crab Handroll topped with A5 Wagyu, which they substituted with Ebi. I would have preferred a high end fish, which would better match the price point of the Wagyu as well.) I was looking forward to the Blue Crab handroll, but unfortunately it was my least favorite course of the evening, followed closely by the Lobster. On the contrary, the scallop appetizer and sushi were amazing (and I don't usually like scallop sushi at all). The Yellowtail Ceviche is pure perfection. They should also probably point out that anything with the A5 Wagyu, Unagi or Foie Gras should be eaten first (before it gets cold), this was a mis. Overall, the fish is very fresh, the flavor combinations are delightful, and the soy sauce eye dropper was fun. The service was excellent as well. We probably wouldn't order the omakase again, now that we know what we liked and what we would skip. The gelato was a surprisingly wonderful ending to an overall great meal. The price point here makes this a special occasion meal, so we likely won't be back soon.

They have an extensive menu with sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, noodles, soup, salads, fusion appetizers, etc. They even have some Korean items like bulgogi, sundubu, and bibimbap. Prices are reasonable. I called and placed a take-out order near closing time. The employee was accommodating, pleasant, and told me my order would be ready in 15 minutes. I drove over and was able to find street parking easily. The interior is casual and spacious, but a little dreary and outdated. They have exposed brick walls, wood tables, and hanging light fixtures. My food was prepared on time. I ordered: *Salmon Lover - 4 pieces of sushi, 4 pieces of sashimi, 6 piece roll ($20.50) *Tuna Lover - 4 pieces of sushi, 4 pieces of sashimi, 6 piece roll ($20.50) The salmon and tuna were fresh in taste, texture, and smell. Vibrant colors, firm and smooth textures, and delicate flavors! The sushi rolls had the right fish to rice ratio. The rice could've been more seasoned. The miso soup was warm, savory, and comforting. Not the best sushi I've ever had, but it did the job of satisfying my cravings. I would return to try their special rolls!

*Quarantine Delivery Review*…read more I hate to give 2 stars right now, but the food really was not good. Being the Yelper that I am, I always look up restaurants before ordering but I couldn't find anything on Sushi Zen on Yelp. Still, I decided to give it a chance because $40 for a platter of sushi seemed like a great deal (I guess that was mistake #1). So I pulled the trigger. It wasn't after that did I find some Google Reviews (mistake #2 for not doing thorough research). It had a bunch of what seemed like fake reviews, and it's not even an actual restaurant! IT'S A SUSHI COUNTER INSIDE OF A SUPERMARKET! We ordered via Uber Eats, but it definitely did not mention it was supermarket sushi, so I feel very misled. The platter's description was Tokyo - 50 pieces of roll: two California rolls, two spicy tuna rolls, one salmon avocado roll, and one spicy crab roll. We paid an extra $4 to swap two regular rolls to "special rolls" but you don't get to pick, so we didn't know what they were. It turns out that their "special rolls" are just California rolls with a small piece of fish on top. Also, it was three California rolls instead of two (they swapped out one of the tuna rolls for this). The spicy crab roll was also just another California roll topped with spicy crab, which I must admit was not the worst. It was probably the most palatable roll of the bunch. Overall, this might be some of the worst sushi I've ever had. If you like California rolls and a crazy amount of rice in your rolls, you might like this. But if you're looking for real sushi, then you won't find it here.

Nothing sitting out already made in a fridge here, which I like. Shop owner was kind and friendly and clearly cared about producing some delicious food. He took his time. Rolls were a great size. To clear up confusion of prior reviewers, yes, this shop is located inside of the farmer's market. This shouldn't scare you away, as it is a separate business that just happens to be located in there. This is FAR from supermarket-grade sushi. Instead, I will be visiting this place for takeout much more often. A+ . Other reviewer must have visited on an off-day, as this sushi rivals some of the better sushi I've had elsewhere.
