I see all these glowing reviews and I hate to leave this one but I also think it would not be honest if I had nothing to say about my experience with this company. On 4/26/13 I took my car to TQ's to be smogged. I shopped around and after reading the reviews thought I had struck gold. Considering that this shop is only a block away from my house I thought this was going to be a sweet deal. If all went well I would have a new mechanic and I would take all my work to him. I have a '91 Nissan Sentra that I've taken relatively good care of. It had in excess of 200,000 miles on it at the time, a few quirks here and there but was running relatively well. To make a long story short I failed the test. I needed to replace an exhaust valve because it failed the emissions test. The part that was hard to hear was that he wouldn't work on the car. He recommended that I buy a new one. So much for the reviews of older cars he cared for, mine was just not good enough. So I paid $50 just to fail a test without hope of any reparations. It is now 2015 and I'm still driving the same car, only after taking it somewhere else. I paid another $50 for the test, repaired what was wrong with it and now have a new mechanic I can trust and one who values what I drive and the work he puts into it. read more

Toan Nguyen is the best mechanic I've ever had. He is unbelievably fast, efficient, honest, and always has the best prices. I've been to other mechanics in the past, and Toan always had comparatively better rates, but now I don't even check anywhere else because I trust that Toan will give me the best deal he possibly can. I've taken two different cars to TQ's Union 76 and Toan's done amazing work on both of them. He test drives my car (extra long!) to check for safety after he's done any work, he fixes little things here and there without even charging me, and he's so nice and accommodating every time I go in there. TQ's Union 76 is open M-S pretty much all day (not sure of the exact hours, probably at least 8-6 or 7), and Toan's always there. He is putting his son through school, so he works very hard (and too much). :( I would recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone--I trust him with my car implicitly. read more

I pull into the Shell station to check my brakes because they went out on while I was driving. I opened up the brake fluid chamber and there was no break fluid in the container. so I refilled the chamber with yellow brake fluid from the shell gas station and my brakes went back to normal. The next day I took my car to Mobil one to have it checked out and the owner told me I needed new rotors and brakes before he even looked at my car. He immediately told me I needed an entire brake replacement, then charged me 879$. But when I got my car back it didn't feel any different, but my rear-brakes began to make a grinding sound, so I stopped and opened up my hood to check the brake chamber to see what he did. And i noticed the brake fluid chamber had the same yellow brake fluid from the night before from the Shell gas station. So I return back to the mobile station to ask about my brakes because they were now grinding and to ask if he changed the brake fluid. And when i confronted the owner about my car he said, " you have to prove it". But I never accused him of any wrong doing. Then he rudely asked if I had my receipt, I told him I had it in the car. When I showed my receipt he forcefully prompted me to give him my receipt. But I refused then left. I moved to Oakland 3 years ago after driving cross country. My clutch and various parts car were falling apart along my trip. I pulled up to 76. The guy looked at it for free, told me it needed about $3000 worth of work, but the car was only worth about $1000. He didn't charge me anything, I truly appreciated his honestly. I drove to Honda of Oakland, where they offered me $1000 trade in (so the 76 guy had a good estimate!). I felt bad because I bought a new car with a maintenance package from Honda of Oakland, so I didn't think I would need to go back to 76, and again he had gained my trust. However, over the past three years, I have been frustrated with Honda of Oakland 's greedy policies, and I have found myself coming to 76 anyway. It started with a windshield wiper that wouldn't squirt water, Honda of Oakland wanted to charge me $150 to diagnose the problem, plus the cost to fix it. 76 looked at it, saw it was dirty, cleaned the dirt that was obstructing the water, it works great, and it diagnosed it and fixed it for free. When my car was due for maintenance, I got the quote from Honda of Oakland, I called 76, who gave me a quote for hundreds left, so I brought it there. And I bring it there from now on. You can trust this guy. I ask him for advice about maintenance and he gives thoughtful answers that are not manipulative with getting the sell, but rather focus on having a happy customer who is driving a safe car. Let me tell you a little story that will put all the foolish comments on here to rest. Years ago, my dad took his car to several mechanics for a persistent issue. Each of the mechanics suggested replacing the transmission which would have cost thousands of dollars. To my dad's credit, he wasn't satisfied with their responses and continued his due diligence and stumbled upon TQ's 76. Everyone has for real already said how great he is, but I just want to underline that he is a genuinely nice guy, does amazing work, is not a condescending jerk if you're a woman like some mechanics can be, and is really honest and fair. My car is 24 years old, I'm pretty sure he understands I can't afford another one, and he's clear about how to get the most for my money, what can wait and what needs to get fixed right away, and he's cut me really good deals while not scrimping on quality. Based on my recent experience at Toan's shop, I give it Five Stars. My 1998 Camry failed the smog test and a friend recommended Toan, who does repairs and is also a Star certified smog station. At no charge, Toan initially tried to reset the Camry's computer by putting it through a set routine of low & high speed driving. When that didn't work, given the condition of the car, Toan suggested I consider replacing rather than repairing it. But after I explained my minimal transportation needs (only about 10-15 miles a week in-town driving) he agreed to do the necessary repairs to get it through the smog test. Once he agreed to the repair, he went out of his way to do the job at the lowest possible cost. Plus, he did lots of work for which he didn't even charge, including a comprehensive diagnostic and reattaching the driver side-view mirror to the adjustment motor. Another mechanic had wanted $100- for that job. In order to clear out the catalytic converter, Toan even drove the car to Livermore late in the evening when there was little traffic allowing him to maintain a steady high speed. That's about a 75 miles round trip! And he comped the smog test! Another perk at Toan's shop is that when you drop your car off, they will drive you home. read more

I have been going to this gas station for over six years.....the old asian man behind the counter didn't want to give me a sweepstakes 76 card after I asked for one, he told me I needed to buy gas I told him I did..... Then he said I couldnt get one unless I bought at least 8 gallons......I told him I did in fact I bought 16 gallons....he then asked me for my pump number....after he verified my info he just handed me the sweepstakes card with a sour look......okay....not a problem......on 7/22/15 around 2:30 pm I use my debit card like I always have to get gas......the pump tells me to go see the cashier (40ish Asian lady)..... I explain I have always used my card at the pump has something changed where I have to come inside every time I need gas....that rude ass bitch had a scowl on her face and ignored my question.....she said how much gas you want.....I said I dont know $60 (i'm just use to filling up until the nozzle clicks) then she asks me what pump....I tell her.....then I say are you going to answer my question she doesn't respond or look at me......I reached over to swipe my card and then I said you know what nevermind......your rude.....I took my ass up the street to chevron.....and I got a discount because I shop at Safeway...... The younger Asian dude who is the cashier is cool.....I have never had a problem when doing business with him......but because of my other experiences that family will never see a dime of my money..........so I get to chevron up the street.....same thing happened but the cashier explained the card readers are old and need to be upgraded.......I recently got a new debit card with a visible chip embedded on the front.......okay......but he wasn't rude......he apologized for the inconvenience......she was unnecessarily rude and dismissive....... He communicates well and always takes his time to patiently explain what's going on with my car and help me make a decision about what to do about it. His customer service is supurb. Anyway, the guys at this Union 76 are extraordinarily fair pricewise, explain everything, and do great work. I brought my car in on the recommendation of a neighbor (close to the shop, a good sign) and got it back with an intelligible monologue/update on the overall status of my car and exactly what they did to it, what care it will need in the future, a very reasonable bill, and knowledge that these guys went in an fixed problems that previous mechanics had screwed up for no extra cost. this place is my new regular mechanic, and I can only highy recommend it to anyone looking for a quality and trustworthy auto service center. read more
