Hands down the best Fish & Chips in the Lower Mainland! I love this place so much but it's too bad I can't go back too often as they're just so far away from where I live. I've been here a few times so far, and always enjoy the food and service. Portions are super generous, and by default they give you one extra piece of fish as a bonus on whatever Fish & Chips combination you order. They also load you up with so. much. fries. And tartar sauce! I love that they give you a giant scoop of tartar sauce right off the bat, so you don't have to ask for more (if you're a tartar sauce fiend like me..haha!) After a hearty meal here, a long relaxing walk along White Rock beach is the perfect end to a lovely summer evening! read more

After a brisk walk down the white rock pier on a chilly afternoon, we stopped by Moby Dick's for some fish and chips. It had been about ten years since I had last been here and I remember it being a good hole in the wall joint. It was a busy afternoon, the entire restaurant was filled during the lunch rush but we managed to find a table in the back. The interior is an older rustic, blue-collar type place, nothing fancy. Basic amenities with sea-related decor on the walls. We ordered the 3-piece fish and chips to share. Each fish and chips orders adds an additional piece of fish for free so it seemed like a good deal. The order came out fairly quickly given how busy it was! The food was okay. The fries were standard. The fish was not the greatest. Two of the fish pieces were basically big hollowed deep fried husks of batter with a bit of limp fish lost within it. The batter broke apart before you could eat it so it ended up being a big crumbly mess and we just ate the fish that fell onto the plate and discarded the deep fried portion. The other fish pieces were better, a larger portion of fish and the batter seemed to stay intact a bit better. But overall, not the greatest. I will give credit to the tartar sauce being amazing, tart and tangy. A perfect compliment to a very greasy lunch. I am upping my review from two starts to three because this place clearly is a local favourite and the amount of regulars in this place was abundant. People from all walks of life were gathered inside and the servers were really quick and attentive to all the tables. They've definitely cornered their local demographic and that's always cool to see. read more

Headed out to Whiterock on this very rainy morning but that didn't dampen our spirits. The major beach side strip was very quiet & so parking was a breeze & at reduced 'winter rates' of $1.50 per hour - yes! Moby Dick is located at the other end of the strip so if you're coming from Highway 99 take the 8th Ave exit heading west towards Marine Dr. MD is a large restaurant but was only using one section of their space - after all it's slow season with not many beach goers this time of year. We started off with popcorn shrimp & cocktail sauce & a clam chowder. Very good starters indeed. We then had fish & chips - I must say this is one of the best fish I've had in awhile. I'm not really into the old school style of chips so to me they were average. But the fish was superior in taste & they even gave each of us an extra piece - how do you like that!?! Moby Dick is probably the most popular and chips establishment in White Rock and quite often there are huge line-ups waiting to order take-out. When I have visited I cannot figure out why the place appears to be regarded so highly. The chips that came with my fish were overcooked and I did particularly enjoy them. That, combined with very long line-ups for both inside and outside service means I will not be going back. (Right next door is Coney Island Fish and Chips which gives bigger portions, have tastier food, and minimal line-ups. This place brings me back to my childhood...summer days on the beach eating fish and chips! We would come and spend the entire day at the beach and we would love it when we got to have fish and chips from Moby Dick's! These guys do take out well...which is amazing because what is better than eating on the beach! I love the Moby Dick's boxes that they give to make the transport of the food as easy as possible! You can also sit down if you prefer...but I'd choose the beach every time! We decided to order the chicken strips and fries to share because we knew we wanted ice cream as well and it was the perfect amount! The fries are amazing and our order even came with a few onion rings...nothing better than good fries with malt vinegar, salt and ketchup!! Just like the 1851 novel by Herman Melville, This place is a classic. Moby Dick offers a variety of seafood, soups, and drinks. The fish and chips was definitely the signature dish to order, but I decided to get the clam chowder and deckhands which was breaded shrimp with salad and fries. So great!! But what was even cooler was the whole ambience of the place. There were tons of funny signs and clever posters on the walls that made it a really unique place. Hands down some of the best fish and chips I've had. Can't say much for service because we ordered take away. But their winter location seems a bit tighter and smaller so I was glad to have ordered out. I suggest just to get the fish and chips. Fish is crispy and delicious. Fries and thickly cut and well seasoned. Lots of people talked this place up and said that you cannot not come to white rock beach without swinging by here to get your fish and chips. Visited white rock and saw a big crowd outside the restaurant and obviously we had to check it out. Didn't expect much from a fish and chips place but was pleasantly surprised that the fish was so light and juicy and only $13 for two pieces of fish, what a steal! Also one of the best fish and chips I've had around. We also got a clam chowder but didn't really like it as it was too runny and not that flavorful. Also walking around the area, I noticed everyone else grab their fish and chips from here, so how could many people be wrong? I usly go down and get fish and chips three times a year and always go to mobys Dicks but that has come to a end all batter and the fish was wet and when you broke the batter in have fish was all wet and slid out of the batter and was a quarter the size of the batter fries were cold and half cooked never. read more

Moby Dick is our go-to restaurant for fish and chips in White Rock. Our visit yesterday for lunch was great as always. We all ordered the one piece fish and chips, and decided to try the onion rings. Moby Dick's fish was fresh and delicious, and the batter was light and crispy. The fries were golden, crisp, and perfectly cut as always. What was new from the last time we came was that the tartar sauce was served in a cardboard container, so you could spoon it onto your food. I usually don't eat tartar sauce, but Moby Dick has the best one in the area. When the onion rings arrived, we were shocked to see the size of them. A small order managed to feed the three of us, with leftovers. Unless you have a very large party or are very hungry, I don't suggest ordering a large. They were crunchy and delicious. Visit Moby Dick next time you're by the beach. You won't regret it. read more

We attempted to go here on Sunday and the staff at the entry were incredibly rude and disrespectful! The girl at the front said she would ask if we could sit on the patio.. First they said we could sit on the patio, and then they said we couldn't with our stroller "fire regulation" no strollers or wheelchairs allowed in the establishment! So we said we will put the stroller in the car then... then the girl said now I'm ya I'll ask... she popped her head inside (did not ask at all) and the. They are well known for their fish and chips. It is right across the street from the beach. There is seating inside or outside on the patio. The inside seating is very limited but I think they have another room that they can open up. There are numerous placards with quaint mottos and sayings. As others have said there is always 1 extra piece of fish provided so an order of 1 piece fish and chips is actually 2 pieces of fish and chips. I was disappointed that there was not more variety of fish. The fish used for the fish and chips is cod. They do not offer salmon or halibut like many other restaurants do. I also would like to have had the opportunity to have shrimp or oysters with the beer batter offered instead of just breading. I found the fish to be a bit too heavy on the batter for my taste and the pieces that I had were a tad overcooked and dry. They do have other offerings on the menu but the main draw here is the fish and chips. I don't know whether I would return as I think that the fish and chips I get at a local fish and chip franchise is better and they have more options on the menu that appeals to me. There are also many independent fish and chip restaurants that I think have better fish and chips. The fish is not overcooked and the batter is not as greasy. The service was decent. read more

We came here last Friday when the sun finally came out after weeks of rain. It's situated just across the promenade in White Rock, and there was lots of pay parking. The hostess who took my name down to get a table was so pleasant and courteous so I didn't mind it when she told me the wait time was 20-25 minutes. We came at about 12:30 pm and as expected there was a huge line-up for tables and take-away. There were a few seats just outside the resto to wait but it was packed with the take out patrons. We salivated as we saw the the customers walk away with their take aways. We were eventually sat in their patio in 30 minutes and our drink orders were taken and delivered within minutes. My party of 5 all ordered the same thing: 1 piece of fish and chips. Our waitress was very friendly and patient and explained to us that we are actually getting 2 pieces of fish per order -- a really good deal! She brought us a huge serving of tartar sauce but I'm a malt vinegar fanatic and happy to see that condiment was already at our table. We got our orders right away. The beer batter was not as light as I would like but definitely better than most. The Alaskan cod was shiny and moist as I showered it in malt vinegar. The lightly salted chips were crisp on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. My parents who routinely order fish and chips in chain restaurants liked Moby Dick's more. We would definitely come back but probably time it when they open at 11:30 or after 1:30. read more

This is one of my go to fish & chip restaurants in White Rock. My favourite place in the Lower Mainland is still The Fish Counter, but this place is a very good option and there is a reason why there are always line ups here. Also, the restaurant has expanded and now there is more seating available since the last time I was here. The batter is light and crispy. The fish is tender and juicy. You cannot go wrong with Moby Dick size (extra piece of fish). The fries could be better. We ordered the clam chowder and I noticed they no longer decorate with whale art (go see other yelper photos). Yes, I remember these types of detail and that was the first thing I noticed when we received our food. It made the clam chowder slightly less amazing than before, but still tasted really good. read more

A friend and I found this place recently ~ I rarely drive out to White Rock, so had no clue as to where to eat there. There are tons of eateries to choose from on this strip, and several other Fish and Chips places too. Parking can be tight ~ there is a paid parking strip facing the beach, and it does fill up quickly. After wandering up and down, Moby Dick's had seating outside, so we chose here~ glad we did! The inside is kind of retro, with crowded tables ~ servers cheerfully told us to grab a table outside. A tad crowded on the deck, but nice view and our corner table had a cute 'canoe boat' wooden decoration in the table's corner edge. Prices are good, and we noticed " Complimentary piece of fish with every order." What?? Who gives out a free piece of fish with every order these days? Moby Dick's does :-D My friend and I both got the one piece, which of course was two-pieces for the same price. Light, perfectly dusted batter on the fish, perfectly cooked and moist inside. Fries are 'english' style cut chips ~ excellent. So many places will do a great job of the fish, but the fries are sadly lacking. Not Moby Dick's. And, they give a good sized, round dish full of dill loaded tartar~ so good and it was enough to dip my fries in as well. No small dixie cup for condiments here ~ the tartar was excellent and not commercially made. Service was upbeat, friendly and efficient despite their being busy. With fish and chips costing $17-$20 for 2 pieces around Vancouver ~ Moby Dick's is definitely worth trying. But I shouldn't have to ask for lemon slices with the fish & chips. And after I asked, the next table asked for lemon too. It should be a given. Skip the lemon slice in the water and put it with the fish please :) And what's with the no cole slaw on the side? I think the bonus is the extra piece of fish with your order. Long waits but patience pays off. I've tried to come here on a number of occasions but the line and waits has always scared me away. Especially of a nice sunny day the line can be 1-1.5 hours long. Until we figured out that the long line you see is for take out! On a nice day everyone wants to take there fish and chips and eat on the beach, who wants to seat indoors when it's sunny out, funny enough we do!! So I checked the wait for dine in, 15-20 minutes!!!! What?!!? So we switched lines. The restaurant itself is not big, has 5 tables in the patio, maybe another 15 tables inside. We were in, faster than the people in the take out line were moving. We were sat in the patio, which was nice! Ok the reason for coming Fish & Chips!!!! 1 pc fish and chips is actually 2 pc fish and chips. Bonus! The fish was great I assume this is why people wait. Great batter not too thick nice crisp to it, well cooked, and the best part the fish is not dry!!! Still moist and tender on the inside. The chips are nice in house made. We also ordered fried calamari it was good, I think you cant go wrong with deep fried here. The portions are great! Oh wait I almost forgot about the house made tartar sauce, oh so good!!! While spending a couple days in Surrey, we asked folks, "Where can we go to get the BEST Fish & Chips?" Nine-out-of-ten of them responded, "Moby Dick's." And I can see why! We were told to either get there early or expect to wait in line and eat it on the beach. I had no clue what that meant, but we were determined to try this. We did get there early and were able to sit down and enjoy a great fish & chips dinner. The fish portions are HUGE! The crust was crispy, flavorful and not greasy. The fries were good, but it's that fish that's the seller. Service was a little slow but I quickly attribute that to how unbelievably busy they got within minutes of our arrival. Before we could even finish ordering, a line was forming at their take-out window and quickly went down the sidewalk. Yet, we looked at other places when we walked around later and NONE of them have NEAR the waiting line. That's how good Moby Dick's is. This is going to be a regular stop for us whenever we're in Vancouver for any length of time. read more
