My dining partner had made the suggestion a few times in the past few weeks and we finally got to Mod Pizza on Grand Avenue. Parking is very easy with plenty of spots right in front. Inside, it's very clean and customer service is very friendly. The menu board is easy to figure out. I just didn't know that I could design my own pizza until they told me. Also, for some reason I couldn't figure out that they had a thicker crossed which goes by a different name. In any case, I got my order placed easily and with a friendly, helpful staff. The quality of the food from this location has gone down over the last few years. The crust is typically squishy, and the amount of toppings is pathetic especially if you go with a pizza from the board. Some pieces have a couple of small ingredients sometimes making the distribution being done carelessly. They're also lacking quality control; we've received pizzas without cheese or other toppings altogether. At times the size of the pizza can vary greatly in size even if you get the MOD size. The only suggestion I would have if you go here is to be very specific and monitor them closely while they make your pizza. Don't make an order and walk to the register like they suggest. This place was pretty packed on a Wednesday dinner rush. But surprisingly the line went quickly. In case you don't know how it works, you pick your pizza size (set price) and any topping(s) you desire. There is the "Mini," which is the 6" for $4.87 (TINY!) or u can get a side salad for that price. Then there's the 11" MOD pizza or entree salad for $7.87 and lastly the Mega, which is the double layer 11" crust pizza for $10.87 or family size salad for that price. For the price they charge, it is definitely NOT worth it. Especially if you are super hungry. You're better off going to Pizza Hut or little caesars to "fill up" We ordered the mega, which has two layers of crust stacked on top of each other. This wasn't worth it at all. And our dough was under done and every bite was doughy and it was pretty disgusting. We got it to go so it was too late to complain. The double crust seems like a cheap attempt to make you think you're getting a larger pizza when in reality, it's just two THIN pie crust layered on top of each other with no fillings in between. If there was some filling (like cheese) to have some depth, I can see the extra charge but with the pie being so thin to begin with, the extra charge doesn't add anything. So you are better off getting the MOD for $7.87 And let me tell you about the Garlic Strips we got. It was ridiculous. It's a 6" THIN pie crust cut into 8 pieces, lightly baked with some garlic butter. BAM! $2.97! When I opened the box, it looked very plain and underwhelming. SO NOT WORTH IT. The employees who were taking the order were really nice and know what they are doing. The girl who was calling our names for pick up looked overwhelmed. She gave the wrong pizza to a customer and the customer who was supposed to get that wrong pizza was now left with no pizza and had to wait for another pizza to be made. And the customer who got the wrong pizza had to wait for a new one too. She was having a hard time keeping track of pizza labeled with names.... With how busy they were, they should've have two expediting and also, with so many boxes being left on the pick up counter, it would be nice to have the names labeled on there in case someone grabbed the wrong one. Or use a numbering system rather than names. I feel like if I'm getting an artesian pizza the quality should be better. Sure, their ingredients may be "fresh" but this joint is just a lower end version of a California Pizza Kitchen. Anyway, they're getting a 2 star review due to undercooked pizza dough. I even asked the cashier how long it takes to bake the pizza and he said 5 mins. (Thinking to myself... This is a bit fast even for a thin dough) From when we paid and sat down to having our name called, it took about 5 mins and sure enough, we came home with undercooked dough. This was my first time visiting Mod Pizza and I was not disappointed! It was very busy when I came in, I guess because of the dinner rush on a Friday night, but the staff seemed to have a good system in place to keep the line moving because they moved us along very quickly and within 20 or so minutes of entering the store I had my to-go pizza packed in a box and ready to go! Parking outside was plentiful, even though it was a busy evening. One thing I should mention, as a mom of a baby: it can be pretty loud inside, as lots of restaurants are with the music and all the chatter and yelling in the kitchen, which is to be expected, but if your little one doesn't appreciate loud environments then you might want to take your food to go, as we did. It was our first time at MOD Pizza today. It reminded us of Blaze Pizza in California. I love that you can customize your own pizza for one flat price. The medium size 11 inch pizza was just right for one person. The crust is thin with just the right texture and bite. They also serve wine and some local craft beers on tap which is a huge plus. I just wish they had real silverware as the plastic knives and forks are a bit challenging to eat with and terrible for the environment. I want to like this place more than I do. It's appealing with it's fun pizza combinations and option to build your own pie to your specifications. The ingredients seem fresh. The food has been good on both of our visits. It's a Chipotle model for pizza -- how could I not love it? So what's my hang up? There's so much yelling in the store. Needless yelling. The employees yell "Hello!" or "Welcome!" every time someone walks in the door. Every. Single. Time. They also yell out customers' names as their orders are ready. It's obnoxious. I'm not going to MOD Pizza expecting to have a life changing conversation with my husband over our dinner but I would like to be able to catch up with him about our day without employees' persistent yelling punctuating our conversation -- and it's pervasive no matter where you sit. When they first opened, they had beer on tap, which was an unexpected little perk. They've apparently decided to stop doing that, though rather than updating their menu, they claim the tap is broken. It's unfortunate because they had local craft beer on tap and their bottled selection is lacking. No one seems particular enthused about their jobs (which is, you know, weird because of all the yelling). Maybe getting the pizza to go is my better option? read more

My first time coming to MOD pizza!! I have been so anxious to try it. When I walked in I was totally confused. The signs are kind of unclear but the people were friendly and kindly helped us through it. I ordered a MOD sized Hawaiian pizza and the mini BBQ chicken. I was disappointed in seeing that I got charged for to MOD sized pizzas instead of a mini and a MOD. Now I have been to Pie 5 in Kentucky and blazes fast fried pizza (both almost identical to mod) and I would have to say mod was my second favorite after blazes... don't get me wrong MOD was still amazing. The first time i had mod pizza i fell in love, the ingredients, the crust, the finishing sauces, you name it there was nothing not to like. I would typically get a pizza on lunch in Deerfield. Well today i am saddened to say my wife went to Gurnee to pick me up a pizza while i worked from home. We opted for curbside pickup. When she arrived and called they acted as if no one was in the curbside pickup area. When she explained what she was driving the girl said "oh that vehicle" "ok ill be right out". When she got home the pizza was less then satisfying. the toppings had been put on so thick and heavy and the crust was burnt to the point i didn't want to even eat it. I came here with my hubby and his family. As soon as we walked through the door, we were greeted by all of the staff behind the counter which was nice! There was a line in front of us but it went very quickly, as the staff seemed to have a good assembly line system in place. The staff were friendly with the customers and also with each other- their camaraderie was very cute! They seem like really good friends who enjoy working together. Back to the food. We all pretty much built our own pizza. They had a large variety of sauces, veggies, cheese, and meat toppings. My hubby is vegan so he was delighted that they had vegan pizza options! Went with the gluten free crust this time and like the extra crunchy texture you get on the ends but still little soft in the middle. The toppings choices are great, makes the tough to please eaters hard to be mad. Love the whole roasted garlic, odd balls like kalamata olives and feta cheese make for some great options. You can even do that Hawaiian themed ham and pineapple option which I just don't get, but choices!! Service has always been great, the entire staff has a great attitude even in the early days. The plates were dirty, tables sticky, and trash overflowing with something dripping onto the ground. Four employees on the floor but only one person actively working. The service was rude, they rushed me while I decided what I wanted on my pizza, and they had an accusatory tone towards me for wanting certain things.
