If you're not from around here, you'll want to try this place!! I dragged my family to Portillo's in Gurnee, IL on a mission to see what all the Chicago hot dog fuss was about.... major shoutout to my dear friend, Yelper Thomas G, for the insider tip! I'm not usually a hot dog devotee (team burger, usually), but Portillo's changed my mind. That juicy beef frank in a warm, poppy seed bun, topped w grilled onions, mustard, spicy chilies, and a dill spear.... pure, edible poetry!!! Bonus points for offering plant-based franks, so even vegetarians can join the Chicago hot dog enlightenment!!! We didn't stop there: Italian beef sandwich, double burgers, spicy chicken, chicken tenders, cheese-drenched fries, and strawberry shortcake all hit the table... and our hearts. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and unapologetically delish!!!! The vibe was great!! Retro 40's tunes, cozy diner charm, and a manager who went out of his way to thank my twins for their service to the country (he recognized the division shirts)... talk about Midwestern hospitality!! If you find yourself in Gurnee (and let's be real, you're probably here for boot camp graduation or road-tripping), make a pit stop at Portillo's. You'll leave full, happy, and possibly reconsidering your stance on hot dogs forever. Trust!!

Chicago Style Hot Dog & Onion Rings

Iconic Chicagoland Restaurant. Serving up Chicago staples - Italian Beef, Polish Sausages, Chicago Style Hot Dogs. Classic Chicago style food, done well. Can't miss the Chicago style hot dog and onion rings. The rings were crisp and hot - as they should be. While I went through the drive thru on my latest trip, you've got to check out the interior of you've never been. Pop culture icons, old timey vehicles and memorabilia. Service is always great - a little gruff but what you come to expect at these places. Typically not done to be rude, but they're moving so fast, there is no time for sweet talk.

This location now has ordering kiosks which makes the line run a bit faster! Food: pretty good in taste, but the locations in Chicago taste a bit better. At this particular location, I've only ever ordered an Italian beef sandwich with fries and a side of cheese to dip my fries in. My husband has tried their burgers and says they're okay. Service: Okay. Every time we visit this location, it has been very busy with a constant rush of customers. As of this review (Sept 2024), the restaurant now has ordering kiosks at the entrance of the restaurant which seems to shorten the line when dining in. Ambiance: lots of neon light signs as decor. Often loud due to being busy. Drive thru, dine-in, carry out, and outdoor seating available. Cleanliness: this particular location could use much better order in terms of cleanliness. The women's bathroom never seems to be pleasant in the slightest, the garbages are always full (both indoor and outdoor), and the floors are sometimes sticky. Stay open pretty late- 10:30pm or 11:00pm on weekends. Location: 6102 W Grand Ave, Gurnee, IL 60031; in the parking lot area of the Gurnee Mills Mall. Ample free parking.

This is the worst Portillo's I've ever been to. consistently something wrong. Between finding foreign debris in my food and having it smell, weird I think I'm done with them. Today I got a beef combo sandwich. It smelled like old grease. Tried taking it apart to see where the smell was coming from. It seems to be the beef or the bread or both. either way it gets thrown out and that's a waste of money and time. Every time I order a substitute salad dressing, it never gets put in the bag.

So glad I try this location today. I visit the mall at Gurnee and definitely decided to try Portillos here at Gurnee with my family. We order big order of burgers and fries and hotdogs. Service was really kind to us. Food fresh and tasty. I loved how they pack our food to keep it warm and for the burgers not to get saggy. I totally recommend this place to all and even the ambiance is super comfortable and nice. The lady's that help me were very nice and very kind helping me with my food.

Awesome spot! I have been meaning to try Portillo's for years now. We came here on a Saturday and it was packed with a long line at the drive thru. My mom and I ordered a regular hot dog and my boyfriend ordered the polish hot dog. The regular hot dog comes on a sesame seed bun and topped with onions, tomato, Italian hot peppers, a pickle and seasonings like celery salt. It is excellent! Best hot dog I have ever had -- I understand now what the whole raving of this place was about. My boyfriend also enjoyed his polish dog -- it was a bit spicier and topped with grilled onions. Service was quick despite how busy they were. This is a fast casual spot -- we have them in Arizona too but I'm happy my first experience was in Chicago!

Don't be discouraged- it moves fast!!

A staple every time we come to Chicago. Amazing everything!! This time I'm having the chicken sandwich. Quick service. Funny rhymes when they call your number.

What a disappointment! So expensive, so very little value. Remember the chopped salads that Portillo's used to make? large portions, sliced chicken breast, lots of pasta and the very very best was the huge chunk of delicious fresh bread. Well, that is no longer the case. I asked for extra pasta. I was informed when I picked up the order that they were out of pasta. I ordered my salad with no cheese, no onions. They got that right but it meant my salad was very scant. No pasta made it a snack, not a meal. for over $12! The bread was a tiny block of hard, very very stale bread-completely inedible. So, dinner consisted of a tiny bowl of chopped up iceberg lettuce with a tiny bit of tomato. There is no value to a chopped up scant salad.

We had heard they were busy, many times with wait times. So we were surprised. The ambiance is really nice, A really nice Italian dinner restaurant. I started with an Old Fashioned and it was one of the better ones I have had. They really nailed it. There are a couple on their menu so I was sure to say "not the one with soda/selter". That a Wisconsin one :) We asked if the Caesar was large enough to split to start. They said yes. Great. There were 3 tables filled so it was finally not empty. Not sure why the bar seating was empty- looked like a great place to sit too. After ten minutes we gave our order, Chicken Piccata for my wife and I had the Pork Chop special. The waiter didn't come by and we didn't get our salad. He was busy making drinks for one larger party (the 4th table). Finally our entree's came. I asked what happened to our salad. He looked confused. I reminded him we asked if it was large enough to split and we would start with it. He was genuinely sorry. It happens. Then we ate the entree's. My wife's Chicken was flavorful and served hot. It was very good. My pork chop was closer to room temp rather than hot. The flavor was really good. Unfortunately I have a thing about eating my food hot, not on the cold side. I told the waiter. He was sorry and asked if he could have them heat it up. I passed .... Didn't want dryer food while my wife ate alone. The manager came over and insisted it didn't sit at the window. Not sure WHY he wanted to argue this point. I offered the plate so he could taste or even feel the dish at that point. He seemed genuinely wanting to help, but he didn't need to make us feel like we were wrong. Again - not the end of the world. So why 3 stars? My wife's food was great. The taste of mine was good. They didn't charge us for my dinner. Their Old Fashioned was out of this world (ask Omar to make it). The truth is we want to try it again and see if this was a glitch. If it wasn't a glitch, it's why they weren't packed on a Friday night.

The turnaround from order to table was pretty quick...and we found out why. The one positive thing about their Rueben is that it was LOADED with corned beef...albeit room temperature and even pockets that were cold. The bread was only toasted; the sandwich is typically grilled. There was hardly any sauerkraut and the 1000 Island dressing was weird (tasted like there was some horseradish in it?), This is near Gurnee Mills so there is a dearth of other, better fast food options. Would maybe go again and try a different menu item...but with so many other options, it would be a last option (aka- everyplace else is closed so not likely). Very disappointing.
