I ordered a chili cheese dog meal with cheese fries, a root beer and a to go order of a beef with two pieces of chocolate cake. My order was complete relatively quickly. Didn't much care for the cheese sauce open and all over items and inside of the bag. All napkins I grabbed was used to clean my hands and the other items wrappers in the bag. But my mom and sisters order was a whole other story. They ordered before me. They ordered two chicago sytle hot dog meals with onion rings and my sister stood there waiting for a good 15 minutes. Until my mom went up there. Like this order was easy enough, what happen. At one point my sister was the last person standing there. No one asked if she needed help or got her order. We all get busy, but ... Ultimately the food was delicious. The ambiance was nice. The facility was clean. Wish I could find the name of the young man who was the cashier for my order who also was cleaning up by the condiments and caring for the trash. He needs to be promoted to a lead! read more

I should have read reviews before trusting tradition. I ordered via UberEats and watched as the delivery driver waited 11 minutes to get my food. He arrived swiftly, but the FOOD was already COLD and the shakes MELTED. If a business cannot handle a lunch rush or just manage internal logistics effectively, they need to either restaff or reconsider being in operation. Adding to it, my combo was supposed to be dipped, but AGAIN it was merely sprinkled. I really hope the Portillo's in the city aren't as bad as the one in Gurnee has consistently been. read more

I've been to Portillo's in other locations a few years ago, loved their burgers, and anything I had which was made fresh. The Gurnee location was far from a good eating experience. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and the toppings on it were not fresh up to Portillos standards. The side order of french fries were not hot like in the past but luke warm, almost cold and were cold by the time I finished. Well, the diet Coke from the fountain was OK but give me a break. I'll have to think twice before going to Portillos again. read more

I dragged my family to Portillo's in Gurnee, IL on a mission to see what all the Chicago hot dog fuss was about.... major shoutout to my dear friend, Yelper Thomas G, for the insider tip! I'm not usually a hot dog devotee (team burger, usually), but Portillo's changed my mind. That juicy beef frank in a warm, poppy seed bun, topped w grilled onions, mustard, spicy chilies, and a dill spear.... pure, edible poetry!!! Bonus points for offering plant-based franks, so even vegetarians can join the Chicago hot dog enlightenment!!! We didn't stop there: Italian beef sandwich, double burgers, spicy chicken, chicken tenders, cheese-drenched fries, and strawberry shortcake all hit the table... and our hearts. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and unapologetically delish!!!! The vibe was great!! Retro 40's tunes, cozy diner charm, and a manager who went out of his way to thank my twins for their service to the country (he recognized the division shirts)... talk about Midwestern hospitality!! We waited almost a year because of the bad experience we had last time! Of course the food is absolutely delicious, and that's why we keep trying again! Tonight it appears that we actually got someone else's special order. The chicken chopped salad didn't have any macaroni or cheese on it, and it had a double portion of the chicken. We had ordered the regular chopped chicken salad and we had ordered several extra dressings. This one also came without any dressing! The online wait said one hour, but my husband drove directly there instead, and the wait was less than 10 minutes. Sometimes we go all the way down to Vernon Hills (even though we live right here in Gurnee Grayslake) just so that we can be sure the order will be right. So disappointed again! I have been an avid fan of Portillos for over 30 years. It is a great Chicagoland institution....for hotdogs, beef, burgers, shakes, fries, and amazing cake. All good. Yes...some will find something to whine about once they went public...and while I have not noticed a big change in the quality of most of their offerings - I am sad to relate that their CHOPPED SALAD I got last night was awful. For about $14 or so...you get some light green/white lettuce, a few pieces of bacon, and bits of bacon, chicken, pasta, and bleu cheese. While their warm bread and dressing are still amazing - I will never get a salad there again. This location now has ordering kiosks which makes the line run a bit faster! Food: pretty good in taste, but the locations in Chicago taste a bit better. At this particular location, I've only ever ordered an Italian beef sandwich with fries and a side of cheese to dip my fries in. My husband has tried their burgers and says they're okay. Service: Okay. Every time we visit this location, it has been very busy with a constant rush of customers. As of this review (Sept 2024), the restaurant now has ordering kiosks at the entrance of the restaurant which seems to shorten the line when dining in. Ambiance: lots of neon light signs as decor. Often loud due to being busy. Drive thru, dine-in, carry out, and outdoor seating available. Cleanliness: this particular location could use much better order in terms of cleanliness. The women's bathroom never seems to be pleasant in the slightest, the garbages are always full (both indoor and outdoor), and the floors are sometimes sticky. This is the worst Portillo's I've ever been to. consistently something wrong. Between finding foreign debris in my food and having it smell, weird I think I'm done with them. Today I got a beef combo sandwich. It smelled like old grease. Tried taking it apart to see where the smell was coming from. It seems to be the beef or the bread or both. either way it gets thrown out and that's a waste of money and time. Used to look forward to our stops at Portillo's in Merrilville or Gurnee. I grew up in Chicago. Used to think Portillo's had excellent Italian beef, great hamburgers and Chicago style hotdogs. Our last visit, and I do mean last visit was super disappointing. Don't know if it is a unique issue to the Gurnee Mills Portillo's... or if this is the "new" Portillo's. Regardless, it was so bad, no one is going back to any Portillo's location. One bad visit... for every single person... regardless of what they ordered...no one is going back to Portillo's for a long while. So glad I try this location today. I visit the mall at Gurnee and definitely decided to try Portillos here at Gurnee with my family. We order big order of burgers and fries and hotdogs. Service was really kind to us. Food fresh and tasty. I loved how they pack our food to keep it warm and for the burgers not to get saggy. I rarely leave reviews, but this visit to Portillo's was beyond frustrating. It took 25 minutes to get five hot dogs...seriously. No fries, no burgers, just hot dogs. When I asked the manager why it takes so long...instead of apologizing or owning the delay, she started rattling off excuses like it was acceptable. Sorry, but there's no justifying that kind of wait time for a fast food restaurant known for hot dogs. If you're going to make customers wait that long, at least offer an apology and not an attitude. Awesome spot! I have been meaning to try Portillo's for years now. We came here on a Saturday and it was packed with a long line at the drive thru. My mom and I ordered a regular hot dog and my boyfriend ordered the polish hot dog. The regular hot dog comes on a sesame seed bun and topped with onions, tomato, Italian hot peppers, a pickle and seasonings like celery salt. It is excellent! Best hot dog I have ever had -- I understand now what the whole raving of this place was about. My boyfriend also enjoyed his polish dog -- it was a bit spicier and topped with grilled onions. Service was quick despite how busy they were. This is a fast casual spot -- we have them in Arizona too but I'm happy my first experience was in Chicago! read more

They have messed up our order a few times, but they are always fast to fix it and very apologetic. It can happen anywhere. I give them so much credit for working as fast as they do though. What a disappointment! So expensive, so very little value. Remember the chopped salads that Portillo's used to make? large portions, sliced chicken breast, lots of pasta and the very very best was the huge chunk of delicious fresh bread. Well, that is no longer the case. I asked for extra pasta. I was informed when I picked up the order that they were out of pasta. I ordered my salad with no cheese, no onions. They got that right but it meant my salad was very scant. No pasta made it a snack, not a meal. for over $12! The bread was a tiny block of hard, very very stale bread-completely inedible. In Great Lakes area for my sons boot camp graduation so of course had to stop at Portillos. This location is close to RTC and there was no line when we walked in. I ordered a hot dog and cake shake and my husband got the beef sandwich. First, the cake shake was just too sweet for me; I could only drink a couple sips. The hot dog was ok but I wasn't a fan of the fake, bright green looking relish and the bun was kinda soggy. My husband enjoyed his sandwich but wished it was a little more juicy, it tasted dry. So come here for the experience and so you can say you went to Portillos. Last time I was in Chicago I bought a hotdog from a street vendor and that was amazing. We came at lunchtime and faced with a long ordering line. Much to our delight, the line move quickly and efficiently. Our order was perfect and came up within five minutes. Pretty impressive on a weekday! I got a delicious chili cheese dog that was everything one could hope for. The snap when biting into the hotdog never gets old. There was just enough cheese and chili to make it tasty and not a gloppy mess. My companion got the Italian beef/Italian sausage combo. Holy moly! It was big enough for two! The luscious, tender, juicy, seasoned Italian beef was nestled next to an impressive piece of perfectly spiced Italian sausage. The French bread was crunchy and held up well to all three juicy goodness. We got extra gravy on the side and both sweet and hot Gardinera. Yum to the nth degree!!! Apparently, their chocolate cake is really something but, alas, we had no room. We were not planning on stopping but glad we did. Some of the reviews are a bit misleading. I can't think of a better test than a summer weekday lunchtime. Portillo's passed with flying colours! There are plenty of places to eat around here but we would come back here every time. read more

Time and new ownership has not been kind to the Portillo's brand - inconsistent and careless service, error upon error, terrible and I mean some of the worst rebound attempts by management I've ever seen. We order for six people yesterday - $90 worth of food. 40 minutes to get our food. We watched, waited, and marveled at how lame execution was. Place your order, they call for rings to be dropped, 35 min later our food and shake which have been mostly bagged for 20 min, to include that shake. In the end - no rings, and we were told we were waiting on our single tamale. Yes that's right, food sat in the bag on the counter for 20 minutes while they "made" onion rings and 1 tamale. Clean house and start over - horrible management with zero direction. Too many "coaches" on the field and no one leading, so there is no perspective to be had. I asked the manager exactly what's taking so long making hotdogs and onion rings... I got a "we're busy". You're Portillo's- you are always busy...next excuse? They made it extremely easy to place an order online in advance and arrived when I requested them too, even showing up a little early which was great. The lady that delivered it also set it up and was extremely friendly and the set up was really quick. She took all the boxes and made this a really smooth experience. The cones of no return.. There's no "whoops I change my mind" after you enter the cones in the drive through line. The only way out is running over the cones which some drivers are doing because the wait is ridiculously long... You burn more gas in this drive through than chik-filet on a busy day. When you think you could drive off.. they trap you in with a "merge" barrier. So either ruin your car's front end or suffer in the ridiculously long wait of a line. This is our local Portillo's and the food is always tasty, fresh and comes out quickly. The inside is your typical Portillo's and sometimes the line gets long and wraps around and blocks the area. It's a small space for a busy location but they do their best. Sometimes the trash overflows due to the business and most likely low staff, like most establishments. None of the issues stop us from eating here. read more

This is the first Portillo that I have not been very happy going to. When you walk into what appears to be a very large restaurant, you realize how deceiving it is. There is a giant square in the middle of the restaurant which has some high top seats but no one ever appears to sit there. I do see a person or two cleaning tables but they can't keep up with the tables and filling the condiment section. The condiment section severely needed some attention to both cleaning and filling the ketchup containers. Now for the thing that bothered me the most. I ordered a regular beef sandwich double dipped with au jus on the side and sweet peppers on the side. There is a charge for the peppers but not the juice. When I received my meal we sat down and I took out the beef, the fries ((only about half of them were actually in the fry container) and one small container which had the juice. Immediately it was obvious that they forgot the peppers so I grabbed the receipt and the beef sandwich and up to the counter I went. There was actually no one waiting at the counter (very unusual) and after standing there for over a minute I became a bit impatient. I raised my voice over the noise and said "excuse me????" I saw both the manager and the man who seemed to be working look my way a few times but they virtually ignored me. Finally I said to the manager excuse me, I need some help. He then stood looking at me so I said they did not put my sweet peppers on the side. I showed him the sandwich in case he might say they are on the sandwich. Instead he said to me, are you sure, I said yes I am positive. He walked away shaking his head and handed me the peppers. The entire exchange irked me, did he think I was actually lying about it. Grrrrrrrrrr. I get back to my seat, opened my sandwich and realize that not only is my sandwich not double dipped but it wasn't even dipped once. Well I decided I wasn't going back up there and I would not endure that look again so I kept the Sandwich the way it was. Although the flavor was very good, I was not happy how dry it was. Other than the fact that I was there with people I am crazy about, the food and service did not measure up to other Portillo I have been to. Disappointing experience this time unfortunately! read more
