I'll give a shout out the people at the Home Depot on Center Street and a Thumbs Down to what we knew as Curry Hardware. I took a painted double switch plate to Curry today hoping to match the paint to do some touchups. Mind you my son got a match a couple of/few years ago for this same paint, unfortunately it must have all been used and the can thrown out. This coupled with our never having been able to get on our account meant I had to rely on the associates at Curry (Aubuchon) to help me. The man at the paint counter suggested I have a cashier look up the account; the young man seemed confused as to why the paint man couldn't do it but whatever. The young man tried and as it got busy, I returned to the paint area where I got lost as to why the paint color could not be matched. I was told "Aubuchon does not store the color matches as they are too big" and "We used to spoil our customers"! As he made a label, I inquired what he was doing as I thought he couldn't match it. I told him he was confusing me as I really did not understand what he was doing. To that he told me "You are confusing me", so I walked out saying "This is not Curry". I went to Home Depot where a very nice associate made my match and made in the sample size; Curry told me I could only purchase a quart. I was having a very nice day and did not need someone making me feel like I am a stupid woman! The Home Depot associate certainly knew what I was looking for. There was no confusion here. In the end Home Depot made my day! It's very sad to see the attitude change at "Curry". Many of us in this city have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars at this store; I guess the buck stops here. read more

One of the reasons I like this store is because it's smaller and easier to find what I want and get in and out than it is at the Home Depot. And you can still find just about everything that you need there even though it's not as big. I've been in there several times to get stuff for the house and also have gotten keys made there. Plus I have bought gift cards to the store for people in my family. The people working there are always helpful and if I'm buying something that's kind of heavy they will always help me get the item out to my car. The woman who helps downstairs with the screws and nails is so patient and great, though I try to avoid the older guy who tends to be down there. We ordered paint on the phone with the exact info, but they were very impatient and ended up mixing the wrong type ($45 vs $75). They refused to admit their mistake, and because we do need to come back again and the color is correct, we decided to pay for it, but that is a very unpleasant and expensive experience. ACE has been advertising donating $5 to buy one of their 'buckets' and anything that fits in it is 20% off. So, today I went to Curry Ace Hardware to buy a birthday present (a Yeti mug) and at checkout I was told that, even though I had purchased a $5 bucket, the Yeti mug was not eligible for the 20% discount. I said that no where in there advertising was there any disclaimers for ineligible items, they would not honor the discount. This is bullshit. I normally use Curry Ace Hardware over the 'big box' stores, but it will be a while before I return to Curry Ace Hardware after this 'bait and switch' experience. I'm re-painting my cellar floor - not sure what color but went to Curry Hardware and picked up the standard Ben Moore red since that's what's on it now - standard color so can always change my mind before I start. Not so fast, apparently. Went to exchange for Deck Gray but didn't notice the "custom color" tag on the paint can for the red paint. Apparently, they didn't have the standard red color in stock when I bought it and had to mix it and I clearly was not paying adequate attention. Sorry, we don't accept returns on custom colors. Oh, but this is a standard color, I chose it anticipating I might change my mind; it not my fault you didn't have it in stock and chose to mix it...etc. No dice. Absolutely no dice. The customer has an argument here, and while there are admittedly two sides to this coin, in view of the proximity of Home Depot, Milton Village Hardware and Granite Paint, it might have occurred to the manager to award this one to the consumer. Instead, she made the astute business decision to place a present value of $62.50 on all future revenue from this long time Curry Hardware "neighbor". But the principle stands. I walked in and immediately found someone to help me locate one of the items. He directed me to the place then sent a coworker to help my find exactly the item. For my next item, I was directed downstairs and told exactly where to turn and easily found my item. Then the last item one worker directed me to the correct isle and even described the location on the isle and the color of the box I was looking for. Excellent service. Nope.... won't go back... the Hanover store is a bunch of snakes. I bought a $1,000 Webber grill there. We were regulars there between buying expensive paints to general hardware items. When I bought the grill they informed me it came with one propane tank fill/exchange.... great I thought.... well not! I go in today to get my "free propane" and told if you don't have a card then SOL.... You never gave me card and never told me when I bought it.... nope, too bad.... WOW! This is how you treat someone that spent $1,000 on a new grill? Sorry Curry Hardware.... if this is the way you are going to treat people then I should just to Home Depot. Been here only a few times because I usually forget to go here instead of HD!! A year ago I needed a mouse trap and was perusing their options. An employee came right up and discussed them with me. He said the electronic one was raved about by customers. It looked clean and easy to use. Was $20 or so. I bought it. A year later I am sooo grateful he suggested that!!! I apparently only had 3 little field mice then to kill. Trap worked great!! 1 year later, same battery in it, same peanut butter bait, my new-ish dog is alerting me to it. I check it. Shopping while female Ok so I needed various items including a small can of paint. There were 3 customers in the building. I readied myself to deal with the nasty she-troll who usually presides over the paint section with undisguised contempt. I walked in and she wasn't there. YAY!! Decided to get the keys made first so that they didn't have to rush. Walked over to the key counter and waited a short period of time for the two people working up front to finish their conversation, the saw one approach. Ugh, it must be the she-trolls daughter. She saw me, rolled her eyes, then slowly came over. She walked up the the counter and didn't speak, just arched one eyebrow and made a face like, "well, WHAT DO YOU WANT?" . sigh. Keys please. Then I left to try to get the rest of my list. Since the employees were all engaged in a spirited and engrossing conversation about the Bruins game I decided to find all the items I needed on my own. No problem, only need help with one thing downstairs. I went downstairs where I was immediately greeted by a nice gentleman, who said he'd be with me in a moment. OK great. Waited while he helped the customer who was before me, the two customers after me and searched for ANY man in the area who might have a question other than me. I exaggerate but not by much. Figured it out myself, but couldn't find a few things. Returned upstairs for the rest of my list and the Bruins discussion was in full force. How interesting. Walked by three-four employees who did not acknowledge me. After a long search found what I hope is the right paint. All male customers were being helped. How nice. They were happy to take my money. That was the only help I got, other than the "don't ever come in here again" customer service I got from spawn of she-troll. NEVER AGAIN, sorry that I tried to shop while female. read more

A month ago I went into Curry to buy one bolt for a broken tool. The tool was too long to bring into the store so I had to guess on the size of the missing bolt. Russell from Curry, from downstairs grabbed a box of the bolts and walked out with me to my car to try and fit the bolt and fix the tool. He made two trips back into the store and figured the exact bolt and thread size that we needed. We bought two bolts for .80 and I think he took 20 minutes helping us solve the problem. Over the years I have seen him and others at Curry give exceptional service but this was the best ever. To be transparent my son has worked there for a few years building grills but this isn't why I am writing this review as he didn't even know who I was when he helped me for 20 minutes. My fiance and I just bought a house -- a real fixer upper -- and neither of us has any idea what we're doing. But when I went into Curry and explained that, one of the clerks (Patrick I think?) spent almost a half hour with me walking me through exactly what I needed to prep cracked/messed up walls for painting, filled my cart with the supplies I needed, explained how to use all of them, answered all my questions about specific problems I have, and worked with me to figure out what level of quality I needed to get the job done without breaking the bank. He was so nice and didn't rush me at all, even though I monopolized a ton of his time. Plus, he carried the heavy stuff for me and helped load my car. Every time I've been here, everybody who works here has been awesome and knowledgeable. I would be lost trying to do all this work without their help. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. My husband and I just bought our first home in the area and have been busy all summer with projects. From gardening to repairing drywall and everything in between the staff here knows their stuff. They are friendly and knowledgeable. They will answer all your questions, even the clueless kind. We originally came here because they were the closest Benjamin Moore paint retailers to our house, but now return for everything because the store is so great. They offer a great selection and range of quality in their supplies. Don't think just because they are a small store they will only have a couple expensive putty knifes to choose from. Nope! They have one-time disposal knifes (perfect for me) all the way up to nice professional ones. This selection holds true for all of their products. I recently bought a property in Quincy and my Realtor recommended this business because I was looking to avoid the Giant Lowes and Home Depot that are in Quincy. The staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable on their products. They have a good selection and are in a convenient location for commuters, right off the highway, and on easy Quincy cut through roads. I appreciate their willingness to sit and talk to customers about what their needs are and what the best options are for them. I would suggest going here over the giant home improvement super stores. I know blessed little about hardware. However, I always use Ace Curry Hardware. The people are all extremely helpful as well as knoweldgeable. I very recently came in looking for a week wacker. Ricky (the manager) took time to explain them to me, put it together, and even loaded it into my car for me, He took so much of he stress of the situation out of it for me, What a relief!! Everyone has always been helpful as well as friendly. This is a much go to store for me. Everyone, without exception, is extremely patient and kind. The staff could not have been nicer or more efficient in helping us get the wrong chairs refunded and the right chairs purchased and loaded into the car. I got my screens redone here for the second time, Because they did such a great job the first time. It had been a couple of years so when it was more expensive i did not question it. Paid with my credit card. Picked them up today, ready sooner then I thought..When they bought them to the register the gentleman said they owed me some money back because they made a mistake and over charged me. Nothing bothers me more than showing up to a store 1-2 minutes before it closes but still getting turned away. This happened to me at Curry on Sunday and I won't be back because of it. I generally trust any local hardware store and will always choose them over a Home Depot or Lowes, so I decided to patronize Curry, which was an additional 15 minutes of a drive for me, but the salesman wouldn't let me in the store at 3:59 because they were closing and wanted to shut down the register. I'm sure it's a great place to shop if you have better luck with traffic than I do, but I'm disappointed that they couldn't be more flexible and accommodating. read more

I echo the positive statements others have written here. They are super helpful and friendly. The store is much more manageable than one of the big box stores. And sometimes free popcorn as well! I also get $5.00 coupons every now and then which is nice. For me going there is fun as opposed to Home Depot which is a chore. Feels like you have to walk a half mile to get a screw sometimes.
