Yup, they cost more than the big chains. But the staff knows their stuff and you get expert advice.

I'm not a big fan of the box stores anyway, but Curry hardware makes me remember why.

This is a store I will never return to under any circumstances…read more I shopped at this location regularly for 18 years when I lived in Marina Bay in Quincy. Although I now live in New Bedford, I happened to be driving through Quincy after a medical appointment in Boston and decided to stop in to pick up a few items. I selected a can of Sprayway glass cleaner, but I wasn't feeling well and wanted to check out and head home as quickly as possible after an unpleasant dental appointment. Unfortunately, nearly all of the checkout lanes appeared to be self-checkout, and there were no employees available to assist customers. The only employee I could see was at the opposite end of the store. I scanned my item and attempted to pay several times, but the self-checkout machine was frozen and would not process my transaction. I'm not familiar with troubleshooting self-checkout machines, and frankly, I don't work there. This is one of the reasons I dislike self-checkout. Out of frustration, I tapped the screen, which resulted in a small hairline scratch. There was still no employee available to help, and no one came over despite the machine clearly not functioning. Feeling frustrated and unwell, I left the store. To my complete shock, I was later contacted by the Quincy Police regarding the incident. I had to appear in virtual court and was ultimately ordered to pay $1,300 for what was described as malicious damage to the self-checkout machine--even though the machine was already malfunctioning. I have absolutely no criminal record, and I paid the full amount in person at the Quincy Courthouse as ordered. What happened next was even more upsetting. Shortly after making the payment, I learned there was a warrant issued for my arrest. When I contacted the Quincy Courthouse, I was told that the safest course of action was not to leave my home because I could be arrested. That was an incredibly distressing thing to hear after I had already paid the court-ordered amount. I tried contacting the store for help, but I was repeatedly told there were multiple managers and that no one could assist me. No manager ever returned my calls. I also contacted corporate, but they were unable to help resolve the situation. Eventually, I was able to speak with a detective who helped clear up the confusion. This entire experience has completely destroyed my confidence in self-checkout systems. It also reinforced my belief that stores need adequate staffing so customers can get assistance when technology fails. If an employee had been available to help when the machine froze, I believe this entire situation could have been avoided. This experience has also permanently changed my opinion of Home Depot. No one should have to endure what I went through over the purchase of a single can of $3 glass cleaner.
