I moved to the neighborhood, from a different part of LA, about a year ago. A friend gave me a recommendation to a different vet in Sherman Oaks and I took my dog there a couple times. I really didn't like the care or the communication there and decided to look for a new veterinary office. I had passed Modern Animal a few times and decided to look up reviews. People seemed to love it so I decided to gave it a shot. I've taken my dog there twice now and have been really happy with Modern Animal. The main difference at this office is the streamlining of the experience. No crazy long wait times in the lobby or in the room and no big mysteries when they take your pet to the back for simple treatments. They do it right in front of you, which I really prefer. The facilities are new so it's clean and there are even free, cold drinks in the lobby. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Christian the vet assistant was so calm and nurturing to my cat Candy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I feel like other vet offices I've been to (before Modern) haven't had the same "it's ok we got you" vibe. I've historically been expected to navigate/lead the visit by holding the cat which is fine of course, but Modern always takes charge in the softest way and Christian really made us all feel safe. He held her still, he spoke gently, and he looked very comfortable doing so. It was such a treat to have someone take lead when I'm feeling so sad my kitty isn't well (just an ear infection lol but still!) And [[HIGHLIGHT]]Bella! I brought my dog in for a few concerns, and from the moment I arrived, the experience felt different. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The person who greeted me wasn't very welcoming, and when I was taken into the exam room, it was covered in dog hair.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My dog is very fluffy, so he immediately started collecting all of the hair on his paws and coat while walking around. Considering the prices they charge, I would expect the exam rooms to be cleaned and tidied between patients. Taking a few extra minutes to do so would make a big difference. After spending about 30 minutes with the veterinarian and vet tech, we agreed that my dog needed a heartworm blood test before starting his medication, along with a few other services. I was then told it would be another 30-45 minute wait because they were short-staffed in the back. Unfortunately, I didn't have that kind of time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I do want to recognize the vet tech, who was very helpful and offered an alternative so I could at least leave with flea and tick medication instead of leaving empty-handed.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I've had much cleaner, more efficient experiences at your other locations, so I know the standard you're capable of providing. She takes the time to explain everything clearly and makes us feel calm, heard and valued. She has a fantastic approach, applies intelligence and caution before over prescribing or over treating- which I LOVE. She takes the time to listen and intelligently assess the options usually electing the most gentle and least invasive choices. I thank her for this as my huskies are quite sensitive and become very dramatic, to even minimally invasive treatments! It's made a huge difference to their experience, confidence and happiness during visits. A huge thank you to wonderful vet techs, Giselle, Dianne, Denise and trainee Brian these past couple of visits. Amazingly skilled, kind, gentle and caring! My pups didn't even NOTICE the injections. This team really care about the animals and I trust them with all of my pups! They care more about making money than helping your pet. I took my Doberman who had a cough to them for a chest x ray. I literally told the doctor I think my dog has pneumonia. After taking the chest x ray the doctor and radiologist both said my dog had no fluid showing in his lungs and that they see his heart is enlarged and to book tests with a cardiologist. they sent us home. 24 hours later my dog was in critical condition...I took him to the emergency where they took x rays again which showed extremely severe pneumonia, no enlarged heart but instead collapsed lung tissue and so much fluid in his lungs that he turned septic...My dog passed away. I went back to look at the x rays they sent me and it is very clear there was fluid showing in his chest. I called to ask for at least a refund on the x ray and our visit since my dog ended up passing away from pneumonia which they claimed he did not have...his heart was also never enlarged. Modern Animal refused to refund me and continued to lie to me about his x rays. The least they could have done is refund me for my visit and the x rays for giving me false information about my dog who passed away 24 hours later... They couldn't even do that. I do not recommend modern animal for your pet ever. they care more about making money then telling the truth and helping your pet. read more

Unethical Billing and Double-Charging for the Same Exam/issue. I brought my dog here because she was limping, and Dr. Kang examined her hind legs. The doctor said she needed x-rays, which I completely agreed with. [[HIGHLIGHT]]After the exam, I asked when we could come back for the x-rays. The staff told me it would be in a few days--but that I would have to pay for another exam with another doctor before they could proceed. I explained that we already had a full exam and written documentation from Dr. Kang, so a second "exam" made no sense. Their answer? "The second doctor is spending their time."[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I even offered to do the x-rays with the same doctor who already saw my dog, but they refused and said that doctor still needs to charge me for exam number 2. When I asked if any doctor could simply order the imaging, they still insisted on charging for two exams --before they would do the x-rays. This is completely unethical and not how medicine works. In both human and veterinary medicine, you have one exam and then follow-up imaging or labs as ordered--not two exams for the same issue and same week. When I challenged them to call another vet and put them on speaker and ask how many exams are needed to order an X-RAY, they refused. To top it off, they gave me an outrageous estimate--over $1,836.05 for x-rays. It's not about the cost; it's about the lack of ethics and transparency. No patient or pet owner should be forced to pay multiple "exam" or visit fees for the same problem in the same week. Stay away I'm attaching the estimate so others can see for themselves. If you want to overpay for unnecessary duplicate visits, this is the place. Otherwise, stay far away. read more

This is an update on my cat who was treated at Modern Animal. At this very moment I just got out from another veterinary clinic, where the finding are even worse about my baby. The ones I thought were laceration actually are burn, and is not just the ones that are visible, the burn are ALL IVER HER ENTIRE TAIL. All those burns had cause the tip of the tail to be crunch to to tissue damage by the burned and there is a huge chance that if she does not recover the movement in that part of the top of her tail, then that part will be mutilate. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Modern Anima have not even reach to check on my baby, the called once after me posting the review and the message was about the experience I had there rather in checking or following up about my cat's conditions.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My cat is suffering, she does not eat, she can't sit, and she does not want to move at all. God created all animal for us to care for them. I believe all make mistake, and coming forward and take responsibility is the right thing to do. I had the most wonderful experience with Modern Animal and I would definitely come back! This is a very nice vet clinic which offers cold coffee and water while you wait. But also, they did a really good job taking care of my cat and had the patience to answer any questions I had and explained very thoroughly. They addressed any concerns I had and communication was very clear. This was my first experience with Modern Animal and I'm glad I came. I needed to see a vet on that same day on a national holiday and they were able to schedule an appointment for me within the hour! Amazing! They were also very thorough with pet care details and medication instructions. The only reason why I have to dock a star is bc they will definitely try to upcharge you on things you don't need for your pet. Such as a monthly flea medication or pet food. They will go through the charges line by line with you so make sure you review that invoice before you leave. read more

I've been a member at Modern since they opened in Studio City 4 years ago. I've had many ups and downs with them. We've seen good and bad doctors, but ultimately found a few of my favorite veteranians here. The first big medical event we had here was bladder stones. Dr. Diaz discovered them on x-ray during a urine retrival for what we thought was a uti. While he was very empathetic and kind when telling me, he also scared me into believing that surgery was necessary asap. I believe the high carb low protein specialty diet he was placed on, coupled with the stress of rushed surgery caused my dog's diabetes, as he was diagnosed 2 months after surgery. His bladder stones came back within 6 months. The worst experience was the doctor who called to inform me that my dog is now diabetic. 1 in 10 dogs is euthanized on diagnosis of diabetes and doctors like this likely contribute to that number. This was a doctor I had never met and who did not know my dog, he was calling to relay lab results. He was needlessly cruel and outlined only worse case scenarios, including telling me my dog would "for sure", based on his experience, go blind within a year. It's been 2 years and his eyes are stable and supported with a great supplement Dr. Kang recommended. Modern was very supportive in the beginning of our diabetes journey. I called panicked more than once and was helped by their virtual care team. Having a number to call answered by a real person is a huge comfort when your pet is sick. This is a big selling point of Modern for me. They are also wonderful about providing medical records to outside doctors and specialists and have even helped me get letters to fight our insurance company when they didn't want to cover my dog's care. My biggest criticism is trouble getting medication. The virtual care team does not have access to any locations inventory which has caused problems when the clinic doesn't respond to them. Studio City once took 2 days to respond to an urgent medication request and when I was following up the virtual care team just kept saying "they aren't responding to us there's nothing we can do." We've had several emergencies where I had ordered insulin well in advance, assuming it was being filled but the clinic was out of medication and didn't notify me. I now follow-up on every request that isn't ready within a few days. I've been told by a location manager that some pharmacy requests are "lost" and so aren't filled or requested. We've had to drive to far locations many times to get emergency insulin because our local clinic didn't have it, even though we get this medicine every month. This seems like a huge and easily fixed problem that is ongoing. We've also had continuous issues with cleanliness at the Studio City location, both in the lobby and in the rooms, which I've addressed with manager Ariel who is very nice. All in all, I think Modern lives up to the promise of a different vet experience and everyone I've referred here is very happy. I've seen the growing pains as they've expanded, but I've also seen them make effective changes from feedback. I hope they'll continue to listen to members and provide excellent care. read more

I have been dealing with problems at Modern Animal (Studio City and Encino) since the beginning of my membership, and unfortunately, the issues continue. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The biggest problem has been communication. Responses take days, sometimes longer, and there is no sense of urgency even when concerns feel time-sensitive. I've had to repeatedly follow up for answers and clarification. It feels like you're left in limbo rather than supported.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Recently, I was asked to provide a stool sample but was not given proper guidance or a kit in time. I scoop my cat's litter daily, so being told later to "just provide another sample" is not realistic or considerate of how pet care actually works. It adds stress to an already stressful situation. I've also experienced confusion between locations and inconsistent coordination between Studio City and Encino. At one point there was even an issue with getting lost during the process. Overall, the experience feels disorganized. What's most frustrating is paying for a service that feels difficult to access. When you're worried about your pet, you want clarity, responsiveness, and consistency. That hasn't been my experience. Finding a good vet in Los Angeles is TOUGH! We settled with our fur-son, Akira, vet for many years just to stay where they were familiar with him. With his passing in February, I hesitated where I would take his "sisters" whom we adopted in December. I came across Modern Animal in Studio City while looking online. The reviews were great, and I did my own independent research. I am glad I decided to give them a chance. I have two female huskies. They are littermates. One was previously adopted then returned. She has some issues as a result of this. I also had my concerns about her spay status. On our first visit, I felt the doctor, Dr. Dustin Ong, took great care and did not make me feel guilty for not bringing them in sooner (I kept dreading this existential judgment). He truly listened to me and assessed my pup in question. He told me there was a 50/50 chance she was not spayed and we prepared for what was possibly to come (heat cycle). Everest went into heat within the week, and Modern Animal was quick to go to next steps. Since our first visit, we have had multiple visits, whether it be pre-op, vaccinations, wellness checks. They have also been an invaluable resource for emergency situations-- we've had THREE among the two huskies. Through the App, they have helped me in times of need, and directed me to the appropriate Emergency Vet (EV). They are proactive in following up with the EV, streamlining the process. They even follow up on my girls!! Our most recent visit was Bowie's annual wellness checkup and vaccines, as well as Everest's wellness checkup where I wanted to go over continuing health concerns. Dr. Thongnamsap was incredible as usual! She was very attentive to both of their needs and my concerns. This was our 2nd seeing her, and both of my girls were very happy to see her (though Everest was a bit apprehensive when she realized what we were doing). I've loved all the veterinarian's at this location. Our absolute favorites are without a doubt Dr. Patty Thingnamsap and Dr. Nazbanoo Pahlavi, especially since my girls are most familiar with them. Highly recommend the All Access membership! The $199 each has paid for itself and it gives me the peace of mind knowing I have a trusted resource at my back pocket. I have not been going to Modern Animal for very long- however they are really set up for an extreme over worrying helicopter pet parent like myself. If you are unaware and have yet to make your first appointment here, there is a Modern Animal App which you can receive constant support and messaging/calls/video calls if you believe something is wrong with your pet. This in particular has been so helpful for me as I have wasted so much time and money on emergency vet bills for my dogs when it wasn't necessarily needed and I was just worrying. Having the access to a vet clinic for support and determining if symptoms warrant that trip has been a life saver for me. The app is convenient for that and also just having immediate access to records and a notification reminder for when a vaccination is due or heart worm/flea medication. Everyone that I've met here has been extremely friendly to my dogs and myself. They really seem like they care. I think that this place is a really top notch options for your pets! My only criticism would be that in an emergency being able to squeeze a regular client in would be nice. But I do understand a full schedule. read more

Modern Animal truly saved my dog's life. My senior dog Snorkel had suffered with painful glaucoma for about a year before undergoing major surgery with a veterinary ophthalmologist (not modern animal). The first night after surgery Snorkel was not eating, drinking, or settling, and I knew he was in trouble. Using the app, I was able to log in late at night, check availability at my location (and nearby ones), and book an appointment immediately for the next day. That kind of access is something I have never experienced with a traditional vet, where you usually have to wait until morning to call and hope for a same day appointment. The care itself was outstanding. Snorkel received fluids, a Rimadyl injection for pain and inflammation, an anti-nausea injection, and an antibiotic injection since he was not eating. These treatments made an enormous difference and gave him the support he needed to stabilize. He came back the next two days for more injections, and each time the doctors and techs treated Snorkel with patience, compassion, and real skill. I've had three interactions with modern animal since signing up. the first time was the wellness check, the second was via chat and the third was for a heart worm test. He is an obese cat. dr. said his symptoms were most likely allergy to something in his food and advised i change from the prescription food that the previous vet recommended months earlier. About 3 months later + on new food but he still itches and they want $80 bucks for a follow up visit. i'm at my wits end with vets charging almost a hundred dollars to walk in the door but only spend 10 minutes with you and only look at the issue you came in for instead of checking the whole animal as a preventative against ANOTHER OFFICE VISIT LATER. read more

I've been to Modern Animal a handful of times now, and my experience has always been great. I truly believe every pet parent should at least have the app. Being able to chat or video chat with a specialist 24/7 has brought me immense peace of mind, and the people working here truly care about your pet (and you, too!). Recently I've worked with Dr. Barker, Dr. Conner, and nurse Giani at this location. They are all so friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and really put my mind at ease during a stressful situation. They are very transparent about costs and lay out all their recommendations very clearly, which is so helpful. And the cherry on top is having easy access to my dog's care plan and invoices in the app, along with easy follow up via chat or an additional appointment. Bonus: They also offer "happy appointments," where you can bring in your dog around lunchtime for a "fun" appointment, where they come to get snacks and get pampered, and that's it! That way, your dog associates the place with fun. I'd recommend asking for more info about this on your next visit if your dog gets nervous at the vet! It's on my list to attend one ASAP. When both of them signed up, I received a message that I only got $50 per person. When I inquired, they said sorry, we changed the referral program to $50. I recently joined MA and have gone to the Culver City location twice. I saw two different doctors there and the experience was good. My 6 y.o. Labradoodle needed a procedure and I ended up booking at the Studio City location because it was the soonest availability. She had a dental cleaning, a cyst removal, a biopsy on a lipoma, and x rays. I was super anxious about the procedure, especially about her being put under anesthesia, and they did a great job at answering all my questions. I've found the chat works really well when you have a specific concern (as long as it's a follow up question - if the dog hasn't been seen for the issue the chat won't be much use) and they always responded within a few hours, sometimes minutes, and were able to address all my concerns, which were A LOT! The procedure was performed by Dr. Kang and she gave me a call before getting started to go over everything, and then once again after the surgery was done. I spent over 20min on the phone with her asking questions and getting a full report on the progress, which was amazing. Thank you Dr. Kang! The first vet I saw at Culver City estimated she would need 4 teeth pulled and after the dental x rays Dr. Kang said she didn't need any extractions. I appreciate their honesty there when they could've easily tried to remove them to get a higher bill. The doctor and tech also helped bandage my girl up for the car ride and gave us a leash so she wouldn't touch her stitches. The full procedure with the dental and mass removal, plus biopsy and x rays (which were my request) was around $3.5k and I feel that's a fair price. I have been really impressed with Modern Animal. Modern animal is authentic and their focus is on pet safety, health, and happiness. They have the best staff, care, tech, and methods to take care of your animals. Sometime a modern feel and aesthetic, can feel gimmicky and inauthentic, but that is far from true at Modern Animal. My dog is a rescue and he, like many, can be skittish and scared. The staff is experienced with that and knew how to respond. They seem to love all pets and their unique personalities. I was so impressed with every member from the people greeting me, to the techs, to the surgueon. Even though I was nervous, I felt my dog was really cared for and the team taking care of him knew what they were doing. It's rare to see a team with professional knowledge and good bed side manner. My dog is prone to rotten teeth and gum issues so he had to get many teeth removed. Dr. Cesar Diaz knew exactly what he was doing. He knew how to explain things in terms a non vet would understand. He was patient with every question I asked him. Even when I was a bit stubborn about keeping some of my dog's teeth in, Dr. Diaz was not pushy. He instead explained everything to me solely to provide me with information that was in the best interest of my dog. He really is one of the best of the best. I really appreciated everyone's care and empathy. I was expecting my dog to come out lethargic and scared. His tail was wagging and he was saying hi/bye to each staff member when I picked him up from surgery. They clearly treated him well and made him feel comfortable. After the surgery, they gave me very clear aftercare instructions. I never felt like they were trying to upsell me. The entire time I felt like they just wanted to keep my pet healthy. Pet care can be scary, but I feel at ease taking my dog here. read more
