Service is spot on and coffee is hot and fresh. Poached eggs are great. Side orders are varied and delicious. Pancakes and French toast are also available and quite delicious. I've always loved this place. Whenever I visit RI, I make this a must stop. This trip on Saturday was disappointing. We were seated quickly and the food was good. However...they told us we had to leave, saying we could only be there 45 minutes! First of all, we waited 10 minutes for menus, 10 minutes for our food and had to hunt down a place setting they didn't notice was missing when they delivered our food. I had to ask for a coffee refill. Servers were not friendly or helpful. So after all that, we were down to 20 minutes to eat, and get a coffee refill. When the manager "reminded" us we had to leave, we noticed almost all the tables were empty and the servers were standing around talking, a line of people waiting to get in. I don't know what happened to this place but I've scratch them off my list. I was never treated so rudely in my whole life at an eating establishment after spending nearly $90 for 3 people. read more

I grew up going to the Modern Diner with my Dad. Have to say... what a difference in the menu! It went from basic to over the top! (Side note: the décor is still the same- charming in a sense that it has kept its history and nice that sometimes things do not change...) This place is worth visiting alone for their unique menu. Just beware if you do not get there early... there will be a wait and sometimes you will be waiting outdoors! Also, this place has a hard time, due to size, accommodating large groups. We were a group of 6 and had to sit back to back in booths. We were just happy to sit doewn and eat with the kids sooner rather than later so no issues here. I ordered the maple rum French toast. I asked for my bacon extra crispy- CHECK! I asked for them to hold the bananas- CHECK! I also asked for the almonds/blueberries on the side- CHECK! I have been thinking about the jalapeño bacon grits since I last ate them 2 yrs ago. This morning did not disappoint. Our breakfast was delicious. The only criticism I have is the young staff. 90% did not make eye contact unless they were asked a question. One of them put lip balm on while leaning on the counter and afterward checked her phone a few times. No one asked if we wanted more coffee it was kind of like watching a few zombies. There was one young lady w a red shirt and big Afro. She was great smiling and talking to everyone. She was the only ray of hope with that crew. read more

I remember coming here when I was younger and wanted to try it again. First thing to note is that the food comes out super quick, about 10-15 minutes and my mom and I were already eating. I ordered a breakfast sandwich on a toasted English muffin with egg, cheese, and jalapeño bacon. I'm not sure if this jalapeño bacon is prepared in house or purchased that way but it's SO good. I would compare the flavor to a slim Jim-spicy and meaty. The only complaint I would have is that the English muffin was a bit soggy on the bottom from condensation build up. I replaced my home fries with cheesy grits and I loved that choice. The grits were creamy and cheesy tasting. I loved how accommodating they were with the substitutions I made. Our 2 breakfast entrees with a cup of coffee came out to $23 which I thought was a good price. There's plenty of parking and about a mile or two down the road, there's a farmers market on Saturday mornings. So, go to breakfast, then shop around for some cool items and organic food. read more

Truly loved this place, the vibe and staff were amazing. I was staying around the area with my family and decided to go to a local diner for a late breakfast. We always go on a Monday to avoid lines/crowds. Although diner was less than 1/2 full, we were definitely rushed out. Servers kept coming to the table every 5 minutes to ask if we wanted anything wrapped up, even though we had been there a total of less than 30 minutes. Policy of 45-minute limit needs to be tempered based on circumstances. We did not feel comfortable at all. Modern diner is a classic diner with a modern twist on breakfast items. Delicious French toast options. My party tried their custard French toast, stuffed blueberry French toast and a strawberry crepe. To my surprise, I enjoyed the crepe the best followed by the blueberry then the custard. We tried some egg entrees too that were all good except my sister in law found a hair on her plate. Never fun. Service was good and it was covid friendly with reservations and all. Still an amazing place. They are surviving Covid, and certainly make phenomenal food.

It's a great building. And it's clear, it used to be a classic stand alone diner, before the kitchen was moved into an outbuilding and a second outbuilding was added to form the bar. If I knew more about diner architecture, I might even be more impressed. But to me, this is one of those diners that used to be a diner, and now is going through the motions of being a diner, without actually being a diner. It's a little too creative, for starters, and a little too precious. But still dirty, but not in a particularly off putting way. To their credit, when they brought me my oatmeal, and it was sweetened watery brown stuff that came out of a packet, they took it back without hassle. The eggs and onion scramble was fine, but the potatoes were lackluster. Good diners need good potatoes. It's non negotiable. The kids sausage was delicious. And I am glad I had the chance to come here and eat once. It's an interesting place, and it's fun to imagine what it was like when the kitchen used to be in the main galley. Maybe I ordered wrong. Twice. But the potatoes are a pretty strong tell. Sorry mom. read more

Living around the corner from this place I have fortunately been there many times on different days & been able to order a variety of items. Nothing can replace the amazing specials on the weekends (with orchid), but get there early! If I wake up late and can't get in there by 9:30am, the place gets PACKED (as evidenced by the people parking on the streets since the parking lot overflows with people cramming in to get a bite). The line moves fast if you do get stuck in it. The challah french toast IS amazing as everyone says, the custard french toast can be overwhelmingly sweet (but of course you have to have a sweet tooth to order that anyway), the hash benedict is THE BEST THING EVER!! If you're on a tight budget, they have scrambled eggs, hash browns & toast for under $2. Oh yes, and order the hazelnut coffee. They don't always tell you about it, and it's a couple cents extra, but it's a nice flavor and goes well with a yummy breakfast. Bring enough cash because they are a cash-only place, but if you forget you can always run across the street to the Citizens Bank to take out some money. ;) Mmm... I'm getting hungry for Modern Diner now. I might have to go there this weekend. ps. if the service seems "lackluster", it's because everyone's working at 150mph to get everyone served and make sure that the line out the door doesn't turn anyone away! But I don't really like being bothered every 2 minutes of my meal anyway. They refill my coffee as soon as it gets to 1/3 cup, so that's good enough for me. If you look around, there won't be anyone slacking on a Saturday or Sunday, that's for sure! Every time I come I think I love it a little more. Everyone is so friendly-- from the waitstaff to the people eating here to those waiting in line. It must be because the food is so good. So far, I've had/tried the hash benedict, the linguica hash benedict, the chourico special, the custard french toast, and the pesto grits. All have been pretty incredible so far, with my vote going for one of the Benedicts, if I had to choose. They're probably the best I've had in Providence and they come with home fries cooked crisp to perfection. If you're coming with a friend or a large crowd, I'd recommend splitting a sweeter dish-- custard french toast exceeded expectations but may have been a bit overwhelming for a standalone breakfast dish. Pesto is made in house and is generously incorporated into the grits, which also come with eggs, toast, and home fries. Huge portions, always with some to take home. Some things to try in the future include the oatmeal brûlée, the stuffed french toast, the Italian eggs, the maple rum french toast, and ... who am I kidding, the entire menu. I'm the kind of person who usually orders the same thing once I've found a favorite so the indecision that comes with each Modern Diner trip speaks to the consistency and quality of all of their offerings. Coffee is good and more importantly, constantly refilled. Wasn't a huge fan of the flavored coffee though. Cash only, with an ATM near the front. The wait goes quickly, even though it may not seem so. Interior is super old-school and really cool. Settle in and enjoy the food and the company. You won't be disappointed. read more

This place has been around for a million years and whenever I'm in town I like to have breakfast there. The food is fairly standard diner food. Not spectacular; not bad. But I enjoy the experience. I went alone and had to sit at the counter rather than at a booth, but that adds to the diner ambiance. Tge place has a relaxed atmosphere. The staff was friendly and they seemed to have some well-known regular customers in attendance. There seems to be plenty of parking in the adjacent lot, and the bulk of the restaurant seems to be in an unobtrusive addition behind the diner. I've only ever eaten in the diner part. read more

I've been searching for an old school diner in Providence for a couple of months now and Modern Diner is PERFECT!! We arrived on a Saturday around noon and waited about two minutes for a table. We also scored a small booth in the old diner car section, which is super cool! Our server came over quickly with ice water and a smile and we ordered a western omelette and house made corned beef hash with poached eggs. Food arrived about 5 minutes later, hot and ready. In an unexpected and hilarious turn of events, one of my son's poached eggs went flying out of the small bowl it was in and hit the floor with a splat. He went right over to pick/clean it up and was joined by two other diners nearby. Within a few minutes, our server was back to finish the cleaning. She also returned in another few minutes with a new egg. Nice! If you love breakfast and old diners that remain, definitely check this place out! read more

The coolest thing about this place is the 'camper' that has been converted into a restaurant. Love the look! and interesting layout from the inside. The food is standard diner food, nothing too outstanding or different. it's well made but not really memorable or flavorful, just standard diner food. The wait staff is really great, super helpful and while they are busy, definitely make the time to come over and check on you. Thumbs up to them! I would recommend this place for the ambiance, location (since there's not too much else nearby) and offering good value for money since the portions are pretty large. read more

Stopped into Modern Diner around 11:30 a.m. on a Saturday and it was quite busy, as expected. After nearly 18 years of living in RI, this was only my 2nd time dining here and the first time was many, many, many years ago. We were looking for a cheap, quick bite to eat with plenty of options for varied palates, including a 6-year-old and Modern Diner seemed to be a good place to meet our needs, including the fact that we were only a few minutes drive away. After a 10 minute wait, we were seated and promptly greeted for our drink order, which was wrong. Then our waitress came by for our food order, which was not wrong, but I definitely wasn't impressed. It's basic, very very basic breakfast food served on the cheap; so you get what you pay for. The experience of visiting Modern Diner is really what it's all about. This place is a Pawtucket staple....so I know that what I going to say will be poorly received, but I feel like it is not what it used to be. The demand is so high, and the quality is just not what it used. When I walked it, there was no one there to sit my friend and I. I tried to put my name in - by the time the host appeared, 4 more parties walked it. All four were immediately sat, with me standing there is awe. No effort to see who got there first. I was too tired and hungry to care. We did not wait very long, and sat in the addition to the original train car. I ordered Hash Eggs Benedict and my friend ordered the French Toast special. Both came out looking very tasty. She liked her French Toast...I did not love my eggs benedict. Hollandaise sauce was tasteless, the hash was cold mush, and the English muffin was super soggy. Not feeling it - which makes me sad, because I wanted to love it. Maybe it was an off day in the kitchen. No idea, but I am not dying to go back. read more

Since I grew up in NY I am picky about diners. This place is old school, fun and has a great menu. I always get breakfast food. They have the regular menu with omelets, corned beef hash, French toast, etc, but check out the specials board on the way in. The crepes are fantastic and so are the pumpkin pancakes. The line on weekends can be long, but it moves quickly. It's fun to sit in the diner car, but they have a large back room as well. Great for kids. Cash only! read more

Food is typical breakfast fair, nothing to complain about, but the service today was truly disappointing. Sat down down for breakfast and to go over some business paperwork and as soon as we finished our last bite, they pulled the plates and dropped off the check. We paid and continued on with our work. The manager came by a few minutes later and asked of we needed anything else, to which we said we were good. Then a waitress came by (not the one who served us, she was great, but another one) asking the same thing. Finally the manager came back, visibly annoyed we were still there and asked us to leave as people needed to be sat and we were taking up space. We complyed thinking there was a line of folks waiting and there was one group of 3 and an open table near us. I get not overstaying, but we were there less than an hour and there was no line waiting for tables. Sad to see such poor customer service. My wife and I have been going to the Modern Diner every week for 25 years. The wait staff has changed but the atmosphere hasn't. Friendly; ready with a smile. I have tried many of the specials and keep coming back to the custard french toast. Not only does it have a tremendous bourbon custard sauce and fresh fruit, there is an edible orchid on top. My wife often has a belgian waffle, again with fruit and edible orchid; zabaglione sauce and whipped cream. read more
