I went in a day before traveling to an event for a mani-pedi. I asked for a mani-pedi. I asked a full set of gel nails. I haven't gotten a full set in a really long time, so I was expecting the tips with crystal gel powder. I also asked for coffin shape. They have the card at the desk with the shapes and I told them there what I wanted. They put me in the chair for the pedi. I asked for one of the spa pedis with scrub. She scrubbed so hard, she reopened an old wound I thought had healed on my leg from a couple of months before. It literally was bleeding. There was not a scab there, so it's not like she took a scab off. She literally scrubbed too hard. For some reason, halfway through, she changed out the plastic. She didn't explain why, but it made me wonder if she just forgot to put a new one in after the last customer. As the nail tech was trimming my cuticles, she cut me twice to the point of bleeding. Then she proceeded to put thick layers of this gel shellac on my nails. She must have put seven layers on me. The gel was BURNING my nails. And I told her it was burning. It should never burn. I asked her when she was going to ask what color I wanted and she said, I'll put on a color and you tell me if you like it - I thought, what? No. And then she showed me she had put this really LIGHT PINK color on my nails. I said absolutely not. I wanted this red color that I had seen called LADY IN RED. I asked for the swatch fan back and I couldn't find it. She kept offering me other colors. Another gal, senior to her came over and asked me what color I wanted and I repeated LADY IN RED. Then she asked me what color is it, is it pink, blue, green? At that point I was so fed up I said it's RED. The color is literally in the name. Then she put at least three layers of that on my nails. And I did not get the coffin shape that I wanted. I was there longer than I had ever been to a nail salon before. All that and it cost me more than $150! This was literally the worst experience I'd ever had. read more

If I could give Modern Nails zero stars, I would. I have had countless manicures over the years, in many different places and countries. I have never experienced anything like this. I initially had two good manicures here, which is why I returned. Unfortunately, on my third visit, the technician buffed my nails so aggressively that within days--even under the gel--several nails began splitting vertically. I returned to Modern Nails to have the gel removed. Once it came off, another technician discovered that portions of my natural nails had actually been buffed away, leaving visible divots and extremely thin, painful areas. Three weeks later, my nails are still splitting and painful. I have spent considerable money on nail oils and treatments simply trying to help them recover. A salon has a responsibility to ensure that the technicians working on clients are properly trained and know how to use an electric file or buffer without damaging the natural nail. This was not a disappointing manicure; it resulted in painful damage that I am still dealing with weeks later. I would not return. read more

Please avoid at all cost! I keep trying to give this place a chance but they keep cutting my skin every time I get a pedicure and it results in me bleeding. A few days ago I went to get a gel pedi and sat for 2 hours while one of the nail techs botched my skin with the cutting, did a sloppy paint job and tried to redo it multiple times with no success. More than once, I've come in at my APPOINTMENT time with a specific nail tech and I've been told that the nail tech is running an hr or 2 behind schedule, or that they can't take me at all. Today, after I made an appt--the 1st of the day-- more than a week ahead of time for 10 a.m. with a specific nail tech I got there at 10 and waited 10 minutes. Walked in for a mani pedi. The paint on the pedicure was a little rough. The manicure wasn't good at all. The nail did nothing but put on the full set and paint - did not trim cuticles etc. When it came time to pay, I asked if I could leave a tip on the card. The tech said no and said I could do venmo or cash app and quickly said she can take it through her phone. When I told her I didn't have either of those, she became super pushy. I didn't get what I initially requested, which was clear dip with colored french tips cateye. She used a base powder that ended up looking grainy and cloudy. After expressing my dissatisfaction, I chose all solid color design to avoid starting over. It turned out really pretty. The young lady was a little inexperienced with doing cateyes as well, but her coworker stepped in to help her do this french tip cateye. My stylist rose was very friendly and apologetic. She showed potential and was willing to learn from others. Her attitude turned the situation around and made it a good enough experience. Great nail salon overall. I just left the salon a couple minutes ago. I've been coming here for years and want to make it clear that Kelly, my usual nail technician deserves 5 stars! BUT today was such a hot mess that I will not be coming back. I had a 4:30pm appointment for a lash fill and to take off my gel manicure. When I called to make the appointment I let them know that I had another appointment that evening so I'd have a hard stop. I even said I did not need a same day appointment and could come any evening this week. But their new receptionist said it wouldn't be a problem and they could see me today. I check in right at 4:30pm and they let me know it'll be a couple of minutes. I wait 30 mins before I ask how much longer? I remind them that I have a hard stop and can come back another day if needed. They said it's only be 5 more mins. I then ask if someone could at least start soaking off my gel polish so that it would be a quicker appointment. They said no. After waiting 50 mins I finally get taken back, only to be told by Annie the lash tech that I haven't given her enough time to do my lashes. She grabs someone to take off my gel polish (not sure why this couldn't have been done when I asked) while she sets up to do my lashes. Just as she is about to start, she says she can't do it and I need to come back. So I was at this nail salon for an hour wasting my time for nothing. Also, the lady who took my gel off was clearly in a rush and left a ton of polish on. I paid $10 in cash (there's supposed to be a 5% discount when you pay cash, but they didn't honor that) for them to basically do nothing, but waste my Sunday. read more

Very rushed, hot towel on the colder side, minimal pressure during massage and lack of use of products. Manicure consisted of soaking in water only, no use of cuticle soap or oil. Nail tech asked if I wanted to file or cut down, I stated she could cut down first and she proceeded annoyed. Scrubbed my feet with soap on one foot and not the other. I am new to the area and trying to find a good nail salon. I came across Modern Nails while visiting Pentagon City Mall and am very glad I stopped in. Pros: The salon is clean and bright and the staff is very friendly. I also really appreciated that they are still taking precautions for covid (masks, partitions at nail tables) since there is still a good portion of the population that isn't vaccinated. I didn't have an appointment but they were able to take me in a reasonable amount of time (maybe 15 to 20 min) for a gel manicure. Erica did my nails and she was great. I picked a color that seemed to be missing so she found about four other choices for me that were close--she really went above and beyond. She was also very friendly and my nails ended up looking great. Cons: Can't really think of any. Tips: Make an appointment. It definitely seemed like most people there had an appointment and I probably was lucky to get a walk in spot so quickly (and I was there just a bit after they opened). Ive never seen a nail establishment with so many technicians but clearly they know what they are doing because it was pretty packed for a Monday at 1 pm. It is a little off putting at first, feels like a factory but thats how long waits are prevented...especially since I was a walk in and was seated right away. Otherwise, most things are tasteful and very modern looking using a mostly white colour pallette. Normally I'm pretty conservative with my nails but was on vacation and wanted to try a simple little design (with gel) I had seen on IG. I showed the receptionist the picture and I was glad they were very upfront about limitations and helped to come up with something that was similar but realistic/do-able because I would have been more upset if they had tried and ended up wasting mine and their own time...this still sort of happened anyway. I was assigned to a tech that did not quite know what to do for me and after several attempts another tech came and helped her. Was a little frustrating in terms of time but in the end, my nails looked lovely and cost me $50 which wasn't too bad. They did offer me a beverage, I believe there were a few options lol cucumber water, lemonade and champagne etc. There were at least 3 large televisions...2 with the same streaming cooking programs and the third with streaming baking programs. I'm please with the experience I had today . This establishment is on the ground floor of the mall next to the food court and Poke. I came in for a basic mani/pedi which is $48- a little steep for my tastes but it's what you'll get in this area in general. The young lady that did both for me was Amy D and she did a great job. She took her time with my pedicure and didn't rush through and gave my nail a great shape, as well as applying the polish neatly. I got clear polish on my fingers so not much pizzaz there. Previous to coming I had booked and appointment and did not have a wait time when I arrived. I was told to pick a color and then she was ready to go. I would suggest booking an appointment because they do get packed on the weekends. I think they also offer drinks such as wine etc here. I was not offered any this time around- probably because my service was not going to be that long and I also look younger but either way I wasn't too bothered by it. I've been going to Modern Nails since I moved to this area more than 10 years ago. I've seen their renovations, system changes, and staff turnover. I bring my friends and family here when they visit and want to go, I recommend this place to others, and I've even gone here for my wedding set. Admittedly, I've had maybe 4 less than great visits but who can compare 4 issues against 10 years? The service meets expectations, there are quite a few languages spoken by the staff, and I can only remember having to wait more than 5 minutes for my walk in visit a couple of times (read: no appointment!). But none of that is the cause of my review. As mentioned, I don't make appointments, so whoever is available is who is assigned to me when I come. To me it's just not something that really matters, however, I'm not sure if I won some lottery system or if I managed to catch a new person since I've never seen her before but *- JEN N -* you're my favorite and I will ask for you moving forward. Bad management, can't speak to quality of service. I got there and was told it would be a 20-30 minute wait and that I should walk around the mall and come back. I asked if they would call me since they asked for a phone number and she brushed me off/said "just come back in a bit." The receptionist was acting odd and seemed confused but I listened and went shopping for 30 minutes. I came back and a new receptionist told me that it was " almost " my turn but I should NOT leave or I could be skipped... so I stayed and waited while multiple people who had just arrived were taken back. I even heard the new receptionist call someone and tell them to come back, which they did not do for me obviously. After 30 more minutes I went up to ask how much longer and was told there were " three or four" people ahead of me still (??). I left and took my name off the list, but I recommend being honest about wait times and possibly getting a better system that doesn't favor certain guests. UPDATE: two weeks later and you can tell how the tech's not painting the base coat the entire nail looks now. They probably do it that way to save on supplies and because unlike a normal sns done right, these are going to fall off cause the color coats on top are only partially secured to the bottom coat on the inner part of the nail. And I've not heard from the business about my experience. $55 for this... Original post: Unfortunately the worst manicure I've had, anywhere. The tech cut my fingers several times while using the tool to get my last sns mani off and then soaked the cut fingers in acetone. Wow that hurt and also I would never have consented had I known the bowl had anything other than water. That's a major health concern. Beyond that (see pic of worst cut), she didn't paint the whole nail with the clear dip before doing the color and you can tell now. I brought that up when she started and she wouldn't verbally respond. I should have gotten up and left after any of this. I got a gel manicure and pedicure. It costed $113 they charge $9 to take off gel polish. I didn't have much polish on my toes anyway because it was time for a pedicure. But whatever. That was the first time I was ever charged for that and I've been to many salons. My polish came off my nails in 2 days. Tracy worked with me to fix it. We were playing tag with our schedule but she was very accommodating so that's a plus. However after getting my nails fixed my gel polished chipped after just 1 day. I thought the whole purpose of gel was that it last longer. I added a picture of my feet a couple of weeks after the polish on my toes chipped. When it finally came off the polish under the top layer was still wet. I have never seen that before I won't be returning for the price or distance. read more

NEVER AGAIN, Beautiful salon but very poor customer service and limited capabilities on what I've asked. I literally just got my nails done last week. Mind you what I wanted was not what I got. I have attached photos for reference but I came in for the first time and showed a photo of what I wanted which is pictured. The receptionist went around for almost an hour asking different nail technicians if they could do it or whatever. All but one person said flat out no. I kept repeating to them it's fine I'll go to my usual nail tech. I only came to them cause my usual nail technician was booked until next week. The receptionist was very adamant about me sitting in a chair. So they soaked my nails for an hour and then she pulled a nail tech from her client to do my nails. I didn't think that was right. The tech knew what I wanted and assured me she's capable. Within a week maybe the nail is lifting off and I'm in pain and the quality of work done doesn't deserve $115. I will not be returning. I came in to get acrylic soak off and white acrylic overlay on my toes (NO PEDICURE). Not only was the service RUSHED but I was charge $85. I was told this was an acrylic full set instead of overlay. That's fine but on the price list it was $40 and the take off is $10. Then I was told it's $20 extra for acrylic on toes. Even if that were the case, where did the extra $15 coke from? I went here on a spirit of the moment type thing. It was my bday and I wanted my nails done. It's was really nice and Kelly did an awesome job. I go back last Saturday to touch them up and I wish I hadn't. My nails are cracking and both of my nails on my pinky split straight across the middle.
