Went for lunch today. We ordered an 18 inch pie with garlic, spinach and chicken. My friend had one beer and I had 2 glasses of sangria. The pizza tasted good but wasn't hot, like right out of the oven hot so after a slice it really needed to be reheated but we did ask. The thing that upset me the most was the price of the sangria, $36 for two glasses which were a third filled with ice, not right! As a solo female diner, i recommend other solo women to not sit at the bar under any circumstances. I had a very strange experience here - everything was genuinely fantastic up until the last 10 minutes when some "regulars", a couple of men, came in and the entire experience just got flipped on it's head. When I came in and asked for a seat at the bar the hosts gestured me over. I chose a seat at random because there weren't many people at the bar. Once I sat, a lovely bartender came over asking how my day was and asked if I was there just for drinks or also for food, I responded both. The bartender immediately started setting 2 places. One in front of me and one just beside me and while handing me menus asked how big my party was and when I replied just myself he profusely apologized, taking away the extra setting, and complimented me, mentioning I looked nice and he thought perhaps I was waiting for a date. I included a personal detail in my response which later comes up, but for now all was good and I decided on a drink and an appetizer. The bartender was very attentive and kept trying to make conversation, I entertained a bit, but did check my phone and such as I was here for dinner and a drink, not to flirt with a bartender. Eventually my drink and my food come, the bartender does attempt some small talk in between and that is fine, but towards the end of my meal, two (seemingly drunk regulars) men come in and sit a stool down from me and quite loudly start gossiping with the two male bartenders about both myself and the (presumably new) female bartender. I felt like I was subject to overhearing "locker room talk" between these regulars and the male bartenders. These men spoke about me and mentioned a personal detail I had said earlier to the bartender, but the bartender should have been the only one to know unless he had otherwise communicated with these men who I presume to be regulars. I felt very unsafe and uncomfortable overhearing these conversations between the men and the male bartenders and I left as quickly and quietly as I could. I wish I would have gotten a table and the experience would have otherwise been amazing, both the food and drink were just perfect, but being subject to those disgusting comments while simply attempting to dine at the bar absolutely spoiled the experience. read more

Disappointed by the experience -- not what we've come to expect from The Modern The four of us have been to The Modern many times and usually enjoy sitting at the bar for a more relaxed experience. Last night, however, was deeply disappointing. From the start, there was pressure to place food orders quickly, even though we were just settling in. We did order appetizers and later entrees--not an unreasonable timeline--but it felt like we were being hurried for no reason. The real issue came when we ordered a gluten-free pizza with toppings. What was delivered was essentially a round piece of bread with toppings -- not remotely what we expected. We tried several times to flag down the bartender, who proved extremely difficult to get the attention of. When we finally spoke to him and explained the error, the pizza was taken back, but then... nothing. We waited. And waited. More than 30 minutes passed while the rest of us finished our meals -- and still no replacement pizza. When we brought it up again, the bartender's attitude was indifferent at best. Frustrated, I went to the hostess stand and explained the situation. To their credit, the response was immediate: a manager stepped in, apologized, offered a round of drinks on the house, and ensured the corrected dish came out quickly. That level of service--from the manager and hostess--was appreciated and helped salvage the evening, but the overall experience was the worst we've ever had at The Modern. We may go back, but it will be with hesitation. The service at the bar needs serious attention. A restaurant of this caliber should never let service--or guest experience--slip this far. read more

I've been craving pasta for some time and was so excited to come here for the first time to try their food. I wasn't disappointed at all, and I definitely ate more with my eyes that I had to bring home leftovers! First impressions, the restaurant itself is very clean and spacious and I loved the overall vibe of it. I wasn't particularly a fan of where we were seated however, we were sort of behind the bar and near the doors of where staff goes in and out, and quite far from the general crowd. However, I did come with 5 people and so I assumed there may not have been other tables available at the time. Aside from that, our waiter was very kind and patient and it's definitely a spot I'd frequent for lunch/dinner dates. It's great for a big group I think. Starting of with some appetizers, we had the mussels marinara and mozzarella sticks, and a Modern special pizza to share. Not all of the mussels were opened which concerned me a bit, however, the ones I was able to eat were tasty. The marinara sauce was great as well, and I ended up using some of the bread provided with the sauce! I just wish more of the mussels were checked beforehand so that we could eat ones that were open. The pizza was basically a meat lovers pizza and I thought it was good. Not much to say about it to be honest. The mozzarella sticks got eaten up quite quickly before I could try it and it seemed like they were very thoroughly enjoyed! Onto the entrees, I had the fettuccine carbonara and shared a seafood risotto. I enjoyed the carbonara a lot and I thought they chose an interesting pasta for it. It was a bit thinner than what I usually have so I was missing a sort of bite from the noodles. But the creaminess and saltiness from the sauce and bacon were addicting and clung to the noodles so well that I just kept eating. The risotto itself was also a little less cheesy than what I'm used to but it wasn't offensive at all! I enjoyed it very much. One really great thing I think this restaurant is consistent about is that they do not skimp out of the food. It was very large portions and everyone had something to take home. I did not try my friends' dishes but all of them had enjoyed it. I'm excited to have another spot in New Rochelle to dine at! Next time, I'll be more prepared for the portion sizes but I can't wait to return! read more

Sebastian one of their owners greeted us as we were being seated. The restaurant is gorgeous and has lots of great ambiance. Our waitress Francesca was wonderful and had lots of personality. She made some great suggestions, in particular Limoncello Marscapone dessert. It was incredible! My friend had the cod for dinner and loved it! I've been to many places where the restaurant had good food and service, but they crumbled when it came to a private party. Not this place. My review is based on bar service/drinks and the private affair. The restaurant is big with an "old time" design to it. The bartender was dressed very nicely Reminisce of days gone by. Even the stemware reminded me of a glass from a bygone era. Good cocktails, lychee martini and another drink that had lavender and gin in it. Now to the party. Open bar (what's not to like). A big pizza was placed on each table. Nice thin crust with a good taste. The rest of the meal was served family style. Excellent fried calamari, baked clams, Italian salad. The meatballs got mixed reviews from our table of 8. The main meal was plates of penne vodka, chicken cutlets with slices mushrooms and melted cheese, sausage and peppers in tomato sauce. The side dish was potatoes and string beans. Each main meal also served family style was fully flavored. We rolled out of the restaurant with our bellies full. We were about 70 people. Valet parking was available on a Saturday night. Not sure about non weekends but it's needed as there isn't much parking in the area. It was really a good experience all around from service, quality of food and several times we requested more food and was quickly accommodated. I came here with two of my friends for dinner. The food was decent, not great but not horrible. However, the service was not great... We were completely rushed out of the place by our waitress. I was mid bite of my pizza when the waitress came up and said "are we ready to wrap up" I proceeded to order another drink which she seemed annoyed about and then every 10-15 minutes a busser would come up and ask if we were ready to pack up. This place has a hip, contemporary vibe, dare I say it, definitely modern. Street parking available and pretty cheap, and we didn't have a reservation but came pretty early. We got a large, spacious booth. The bread was that really soft, fresh out of the oven small loaf bread with soft, spreadable butter. It was actually a big highlight. The entrees came with a "vegetable of the day" and when asked if we could substitute it and was told yes for a surcharge. The surcharge was just as if we were ordering a vegetable a la carte so $10 more which was the worst part of the experience. I had the chicken parm which was a whole plate full of thin sliced chicken with ample sauce and cheese on top. The Brussel sprouts were nicely roasted as well. For dessert, we decided to get the affalgato = scoop of vanilla ice cream served with hot espresso. It was kind of fun to pour in the espresso ourselves like an interactive experience, and the espresso mixed with the vanilla gave a good coffee flavor as the cold mixed with the hot. I went with my partner on a Friday it wasn't packed and plenty of seating, we had reservations but I'm pretty sure we could have had a seat without one, no problem. We were greeted by a nice lady and accommodated immediately. Our table was pretty small, not my favorite, and we were seated next to a family with kids and iPads that were very noisy, I wanted a calm date but that wasn't my first impression getting there, I can understand if there was no other tables, but they were plenty. I finally had to let them know, I didn't want to sit there and the host moved us right away. Our waitress wasn't very friendly, just kinda meh. The place itself was nice and clean. I ordered a pink lady drink (nonalcoholic) it was suggested by the waitress, unfortunately it wasn't sweet like I had requested, so either the waitress didn't pay attention or whomever made it just didn't wake it very good, they took the drink back and I didn't get charged for it which was a good thing, it was exchanged for a lemonade, that one was pretty good. I had the shrimp scampi and it was tasteless, I had to add a ton of salt and pepper to bring out the flavor plus it was really greasy and not enjoyable. My partner had the grilled NY strip steak, medium rare, he didn't really care for it, he was satisfied but not thrilled, another flavorless plate. He also had to add salt all over it. Just the fact that we had to marinate our food with condiments was a bad sign, I was there to eat, not to prep lol. The bread was hard, as if it was yesterday's bread. We didn't get dessert because I didn't want to be disappointed nor spend more money on another item that would probably not taste very good. On top of that; it's so hard to find parking. My partner and I had a great date night here on a Friday. The place was packed at 7:30pm, though by the time we left around 9:30, it was not nearly as packed. The space is huge with some tasteful accents and lighting. Our waitress was just the right amount of attentive. The menu is huge. Classically upscale Italian. We got the hibiscus old fashioned, which our waitress warned was the least popular, most sent back cocktail. (Why keep it on the menu?) I liked it, though! Only get it if you know what hibiscus tastes like. Their drinks were a good amount of strong. We really liked our fried polenta appetizer (special). Our veal and scallop entrees were also tasty. But what took the cake, literally, was the tiramisu. If you have any room left in your belly, make sure to get it! I can't wait to come back, namely to try more of their cocktail menu. read more
