You know that pair of shoes you buy on an impulse and then end up wearing for an entire season? We all have that experience, right? Imagine when said pair of shoes (or sandals in my case) has a strap that breaks, rendering them useless... the worst! Enter Modern Shoe Repair, located down the street and around the corner from my alterations business of choice: Erol's Tailoring. This nook of Cherry Creek is perfect if you need something fixed: your clothes, your shoes -- even your face with several medical spas in the area. For $29.99, Modern Shoe Repair re-attached the strap on my sandals, which was a fraction of the price for which I paid for the shoes initially. And once the temperatures warm up, they will be out in broad daylight once again. Side note: Customers must pay in advance. There's a sign posted behind the counter and the guys will also make it very clear.

Solid. I had a few mins to spare so stopped by here to get a pair of high heels recapped. I don't have a "before" pic but the heel caps had worn down to the nails and I was sliding all over work. Went in and the middle aged guy (owner?) said he could fix them right there if I had 5-ish mins to spare. Brought them back out and the heels were good as new! $16-ish and I was in and out in about 10 mins. Shop is downstairs; parking is in the back. I would return with more boots and stuff. Not sure if I'd bring my suede Jimmy Choo's after reading someone's experience with brush marks on their Prada shoes; the brush marks seem to be "standard" as I saw a pair of red suede fancy sneakers that also had the brush marks.

TLDR: the store employees misplaced my special insoles for my flats, the owner and his employee gaslighted me about it at length, and to add injury to the insult, they did a poor job on my handbag repair. The employee asked me not to give a bad review. I walked without being charged because they recognized they were in the wrong at the end of it all. Note: I did not ever ask for it despite all the tumult they inflicted. Avoid. Do not take your repairs here. Unbelievably bad first-time experience. Go to any other cobbler in Denver. I noticed this shop only had 4 star reviews and a lot of what I felt during my interactions is echoed by other low ratings. If you see smoke, there's probably a fire. I will not be returning and I encourage others to not support this shop. I dropped off shoes and a cognac leather handbag last Tuesday, May 9, 2023. I interacted with the owner/head repairman of the repair shop during this walk-in. I felt he was short and gruff. Almost like he was annoyed that I was requesting services. I did not take it personally at that time, willing to write it off as just his way and remembering others' reviews that described this exact attitude. I also was surprised at the price quote, but I didn't say anything about it and was willing to pay without shopping around. This is important. I came by for pick-up on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. I saw the insoles to my flats were missing. I asked about them and the employee shuffled a bit and did a small check to find them, calling the owner/head repairman on his smartphone. Together, they insisted they never had the insoles and would have never misplaced them. The owner claimed he himself had repaired them and never saw the insoles. The employee put the owner on speakerphone. They claimed I had to have left the insoles at home and I should check. The employee repeatedly called me "nervous and shaking". I heard the owner repeatedly lie that he remembered me because I had been fishing for a cheaper price and that I never had the insoles in the shop. I did no such thing. I knew I had dropped off my shoes with the insoles inside. I asked the employee to stop telling me that I was "nervous" and to not tell me how I felt. I told him I was "mad that the owner is repeatedly lying". That I was upset that I had already felt the "price was high and now the shop lost my insoles". The employee continued to gaslight me, asking, "Why would we do such a thing?" They wanted to make me out to be a difficult Karen rather than an innocent customer who refused to be gaslighted. They realized I was standing up for what I knew was true, and tried to compromise by saying they would look harder and would mail me replacement insoles after 2 days. The employee stubbornly kept telling me I was "nervous" and that I had to look for the insoles at my home over and over and over and that I should be charged over the phone if the insoles were found. I rebuffed this several times, but even as the door swung shut on my way out, he said it AGAIN, just to have to have the last word. Shortly thereafter, I received a call that the employee found the misplaced insoles. I missed my bus back home to double back and collect them (two hour wait for the direct bus line, so they honestly ruined my plans too). We agreed to no charge, which I did not ask for, ever. The employee apologized. However, I was so disturbed at how I was treated and horrified at how much I had to fight back at these two men. I was embarrassed at how much I was triggered by them, having to speak up so hard when I least expected to have to defend myself and my memory and what I knew was true. The owner even claimed to his employee that there was supposedly a third man involved who had misplaced the insoles. Yet the owner had said that he remembered me asking for a less expensive repair and he had worked on them himself. No matter what, the owner was lying about multiple details and had an attitude throughout this whole mess of his own making. His employee, whether family or friend, is his bulldog and insisted the owner was a "nice man" no matter how many times I warned him that other reviews exist that do not reflect this. I let him know that I was infuriated and shocked. I told the employee that I wasn't angry with him, that I was mad at the situation where the owner repeatedly lied and fed the employee bad information. However, I slept on it and do realize I am equally indignant at how this employee gaslighted me and made me feel like I was a terrible, high-strung customer who didn't know her own mind. They didn't look hard enough and refused to believe me. Between him and the owner accusing me of bad character and poor memory, their behaviors ruined my day. I remain shaken. I never make a scene and pay set prices. Don't trust this shop. Don't give them your business.

These lines don't go away, they aren't against the grain, they are now permanent fixtures.

The WORST experience I have ever had. Firstly, the owner provided my husband with the incorrect claim tag and my shoes were "lost" until the owner came in to locate the shoes. Secondly, my $700 Prada and $600 Jimmy Choo's completely ruined. Over the past 40 years I have had suede shoes cleaned to perfection, I chose this shop based on the reviews, particularly for luxury brands. Now, I have two pairs of ruined shoes with permanent striping in the suede from cleaning. In all my years, I have never had permanent damage on any suede. The service was horrible, the shoes are ruined, not much more to say other than stay away. Updated: I have received comments that the shoes do not look impacted. Therefore, let me be clear: Prada suede does NOT have permanent lines on it even if you rub the suede lightly with your finger. While there are shadows created, they are not permanent. These shoes were harshly cleaned with a suede brush that left permanent striping as a result. The lines in the pictures are not just shadows, they are forever embedded striping due to the lack of care during the cleaning process and damage caused to the suede. This shows the lack of understanding of expensive shoes as a new pair of these have luxurious delicate Italian suede that is not this dark in color and covered in stripes created from a suede brush. The fact that the company attempts to indicate there is nothing wrong shows their lack of experience, and it also shows that we would have to purchase a new pair and bring them to the store for a side by side comparison.

Very expensive! Make sure you ask how much your repair is before he does it! He charged me $30 to replace a zipper on a snow boot!

I paid $80 for Jen to repair the handles on my bag. Within 28 days of receiving it back, the handles were already falling apart and began failing upon first use. Instead of using leather in the correct color, she used the wrong color and painted over it, which is not what one would expect from a professional repair. This was particularly upsetting because she charged me 25-50% more than the prices advertised on her website, citing increased material costs, and then proceeded to take shortcuts and use the wrong materials anyway. The issue was not limited to the quality of the work. The repair also took weeks longer than originally quoted. I was understanding about that delay because Jen said she was dealing with a personal emergency. But when the repair almost immediately began to fail, I requested a refund. She refused. Instead, she initially suggested that I drive the bag back to her home so she could attempt the repair again, which would have required over an hour of driving on my part. Since my husband and I are in the middle of a major move, this made that proposal particularly unreasonable. Only after I objected did she offer to cover shipping. By then, my confidence in her work was gone. I had no desire to send the bag back, and only agreed because I no longer had the time or energy to continue a completely unnecessary debate over an $80 repair that had already failed. What followed was an exhausting exchange in which she remained far more committed to defending her "policy" than to resolving a problem she had created. At one point in her extended messages, when I explained that I wanted a refund because having to go to the post office to send the bag back for another repair attempt would be very difficult, she responded, "I have nothing to do with your situation on moving to a different state." Later, she criticized me for not showing enough sympathy for her personal emergency, even though I had shown her nothing but understanding in my earlier messages. In fact, I had written, "I'm sorry you're dealing with so much right now and I completely understand. Please take care of what you need to, and whenever it's ready I'll come by and pick it up." What became clear is that Jen expects customers to extend grace and make allowances for her personal circumstances, but is unwilling to show the same consideration when someone else is in a difficult situation. During this exhausting back-and-forth, she repeatedly defended her refusal to refund the money, even though the repair had already failed. When I finally told her I was done discussing it, she continued messaging me until I explicitly asked her to stop. The most telling part of this experience was not just the poor workmanship. It was the complete unwillingness to take accountability afterward. Anyone can make a mistake. What matters is how they handle it when their work falls apart. In this case, the answer was excuses and refusal. Small businesses often ask customers to value craftsmanship and personal service. That cuts both ways. If you want people to support a small business, you also have to provide competent work and fair customer service. I did not receive either. The bag finally came back after Jen's second attempt to repair the handles, and, once again, the workmanship is subpar. The color is still wrong, and each handle was supposed to have a double leather strap--something I explicitly told her when I dropped the bag off. Instead, she only added a single leather strap to each handle. I would never use JT Leather Crafter again, and I would strongly encourage anyone considering leather repair in the Denver area to look elsewhere. I would rather pay someone else to redo the repair properly than deal with this business a second time. In summary, Jen's ethical failures are threefold: she accepted payment for a repair she did not actually deliver, she attempted to shield herself behind a policy that does not absolve her of responsibility for defective work, and then she shifted the cost and inconvenience of her own mistake onto me, the customer.

I chose to go here because of the good cobbler reviews and the location was convenient. I picked them up 5 days later and when I got home saw that significant damage had been done to the uppers of my shoes and the soles that had been applied were already coming off and were smeared onto the bottom of the shoe. Even the heel caps were unsecured. The damage to my shoes had been covered in red shoe polish, which came off when I touched it. I was devastated. These shoes were a gift from my husband early in our relationship and are my favorite. They are not replaceable and have high sentimental value. I called the store and they did acknowledge that they knew something had happened to the shoes, but didn't tell me. They gave me the cobbler's information and I left him a message. When we talked on the phone he said he had sanded the upper because it had gotten some of the old sole on it and then covered it up with the polish. He said he could make it right. I went back to the store and talked to the cobbler in person. At this point, I didn't have a lot of trust in his judgment given that he didn't fix the original damage when it happened and didn't tell me what had happened. After a bit of back and forth, I asked for a refund. He said the owner would cut me a check. I also asked for compensation for fixing and/or replacing my shoes, but he insisted he could fix it. Given the lack of judgment and lack of honesty and accountability, I refused. I had to follow up with The Cleaners twice about the refund check only to find out that they had directly credited my original form of payment, but no one communicated with me about any of it. I ended up taking the damaged shoes to Dardano's in the hopes that they could repair the damage and they were amazing. I should have gone there in the first place (they were appalled at what had happened to my shoes). I cannot recommend Frank the cobbler here at The Cleaners and suggest extreme caution depending on what you need.

I brought in one sling-back wedge, whose stitching had started to come undone by the toe area, as well as a pair of Western-cowboy-ish boots with a wooden heel that I had worn down significantly and unevenly (thanks to my over-pronation + walking in them too much on cobblestone streets in Europe). They could fix the wedge stitching, no problem. And could they replace the heel on the boots with new wooden heels? Was that possible? Yes, of course it was. Great! Cut to 2 weeks later when I pick up the shoes. The replacement stitching on the wedge was a completely different color than the rest of it on the shoe. It was bright white, while the rest was a light yellow. Okay, not a huge deal. It will probably get dirty anyway. The boots have new heels - well, the bottom half of the heels were new, but they were rubber. And the rest of the wooden heel that they had sanded down had been stained to match the rubber. Not okay in my book. But whatever, I can deal with it. Then I get home and try on the boots, and I find that the heels are completely crooked. As in, the ball of your foot is on the ground, and your heel is completely leaning to the left. On both boots. Because I over-pronate, I wore the wooden heels down unevenly, but they didn't even bother to check to make sure that the heel was aligned with the rest of the boot. They just sanded, slapped on a rubber slab, and stained it. I took the boots back and kindly explained the situation. A week later, there was even more wood sanded off, and yet another rubber slab stuck onto the first. And NOTHING HAS CHANGED - still crooked! When I tried to explain more, the shopkeeper actually argued with me and said it was straight. So I just took my boots and left. I can't wear them, but I'll keep my eye out for a good shop that can un-do what this shop did to my favorite pair of boots. Bottom line, I was extremely disappointed in my experience, and I really don't feel like these people are truly experienced or quality shoe repair professionals.
