Ted is the best! I was bored on a Saturday afternoon, it was gorgeous outside, and I have been contemplating chopping my hair off. This was a major decision for me because my hair was super long. Ted definitely has an eye for shape, form, and texture. While I showed him a pic of what I was going for, he told me to trust him and did something a little different. I wanted to cry at first because I thought he was done when he wasn't! ( I looked like a mushroom cap ) But once he blew out and styled, it was AMAZING. Ted is a genious. This review applies for hair coloring only. After reading a long list of excellent yelp reviews, I had no doubt that I had found my next regular salon. I made an appointment on a Saturday morning at 8:00am for a balayage and to dust off my ends, although the receptionist did not book the trim, I'm now glad she didn't. This was my first visit The staff was extremely nice, and I felt like they took the time in selecting a base color, as well as a matching highlight for the ends. Natalie wasn't afraid to ask Ted (who is the owner) for a second opinion and they actively discussed what color mixture would be the best given my previous underlying color and my skin tone. They offered to do a pre-treatment (preart) to help the color latch-on more smoothly, explaining that I had porous strands that would unevenly absorb different amounts of product. I am disappointed that I was not warned that this would cost extra, or how much extra it would cost. The same is the case for a treatment done afterwards (olaplex). While the customer service was exceptional, the length of time the service took was extraordinarily long. Despite the fact that I mentioned that I had a distant event where I had to be by 2:00pm, they finished with the color and styling (no haircut) at 1:30pm. Needless to say I didn't make it. I was there for a total of 5.5 hours for color and lights on the ends. They washed and dried my hair a total of 3 times (with treatments, base color, then the final dry). I had never lasted that long inside a salon, and I was hungry and tired by the time I left. I didn't take a picture after leaving because I asked for my hair to be styled in curls, and it was humid out, so the curls fell immediately (I have naturally straight, heavy hair). Natalie did a good job on the bayalage, except for maybe 1-2 strands that stand out and look a little like outgrown chunky highlights. My overall thoughts are that staff have a great welcoming personality but the length of time the service took and the inadvertent costs dampened my experience. I wanted to blame it on the fact that it was a busy day, but no one seemed to notice that I was there for more than 5 hours nor apologized for it, so I'm assuming this happens regularly. read more

The lady that did my facial was ok. Pros: My face feels and looks great. They were accommadating. My appt was at 8pm. They close at 7pm. They stayed open. That was great. Cons: She had bad breath. So, when she would speak to me (while I'm laying on the bed receiving my facial, I wanted to gag). It was so cold in the room. I absolutely LOVE Modern Wave Salon! It's a struggle to tame this mane, & I have travelled all around the city just trying to find a cut that didn't completely destroy my 'do. North & south, east & west, I have had questionable cuts & was met with loads of inconvenience. Enter Modern Wave. I had passed by this green-awning storefront time & again... not much to look at from the outside. Modern Wave is located easily just steps from the Halsted bus, the Orange Line, & just blocks from my place. Lo! I was granted a perfect after-work appointment with a fabulously friendly & knowledgeable stylist. I was nervous trying to communicate my haircut desires, so I came armed with a photo of myself from better hair days, & my stylist patiently listened to my concerns. She assured me she'd cut my hair exactly as she saw it in the photo, & even went light on the length, so I didn't feel like too much was removed. She then finished off my perfect cut with a sleek style & gloss. My hair had never looked better. I appreciate that Modern Wave confirms your appointment a day before via text message... no phone call to miss, no interruptions. I've continued to go back to the same stylist at Modern Wave, & I wish I could hire her to do my hair every day! I was only here for a short amount of time, so it's hard to find a good salon in a new city. Ted was very good and quick, and offered tips for keeping my hair healthy and long. Just finished an appointment with Leanna and am very happy with the results! I talked about what I wanted, she listened and was able to advise. I hadn't had a haircut in over a year so my ends were shot, and I was nervous about how short it would be. Leanna made some great suggestions and was able to preserve as much of my length as possible. As for the salon itself, it's a cute place and everyone was friendly and kind. The waiting area is very nice, filled with different accoutrements and table space, which is super awesome to be able to bring work with you if you want to multi-task while you're waiting for your hair to process color etc. They also offer a free conditioning treatment if you do a Yelp check-in, which is awesome! First time coming here today and I had the most fun! The staff is extremely nice and accommodating. It really seems like a nice place to be because even the customers were talking and having fun with each other. My stylist, Leanna had a consultation with me prior to cutting it and gave me recommendations. I had bad damage towards the end of my hair so they did a heat treatment. She washed my hair dried it and gave me an amazing hair cut. She cut a good amount of hair off but it was still a length I told her I was comfortable with. Ted was the one who cut my hair and he was super nice to talk to. The haircut ended up being fine, but the one thing that I didn't like is that my hair was washed, blow dried, and straightened before anything was actually cut. I don't care for having my hair straightened because it makes it flat and I hardly ever actually straighten my hair. So, although the haircut was totally fine, it looked best when my hair was straightened and not when I just left it natural. read more

Where do I begin, from the cool playlist to the friendliest stylist. Ashley and Cindy definitely were the best. I came in with red and purplish hair and wanted a BIG transformation... BLONDE!!! A week ago I went to an Asian salon and their male stylist kept talking me out of getting my hair blonde. He said it's impossible because I have reddish and purplish hair and it won't be able to be done, however Ashley said otherwise. She was patient and knowledgable, giving me different options and opinions. I recently got caramel/blonde ombre highlights from this salon and they look amazing! My hair is naturally dark, so going light can be a challenge and has the opportunity to severely damage. I had a hair consultation before my treatment and we decided on a lighter shade that I would be happy with but that would keep my hair healthy and strong. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They pushed Pureology products but it was never too much pressure and I ended up leaving with some great new things! I came in for the first time with no specific style in mind. I just wanted short, easy-to-manage hair. Anareli was extremely professional and helpful. She answered all my questions. I've never had a hair cut experience like that of MW. It was quite surprising to be honest. I didn't think that Anareli would dry my hair after the wash, comb, and patiently iron it flat all at the beginning before trimming. It was something that the other hair stylists at Chinatown had never done. She also went out of her way to explain the products that she put in my hair. And guess what? The hair cut came out amazing! After moving to McKinley Park from the north side, I needed to find a new, nearby hair salon since I wasn't particularly attached to any stylists up there. Yelp rarely leads me astray so I decided to book an appointment with Ted once I saw the reviews for Modern Wave. I think one of the biggest issues I have with hair stylists is making sure we're on the same page when I request how much length is cut off (usually cutting too much hair). However, that was not an issue with Ted and he had a pretty good idea of what style I was looking for after a brief conversation. Love modern wave. The stylists and staff treat me like family. I recently went to someplace else and I was embarrassed to step out of my house. I was so upset and thought my hairdresser Ted would be upset with me too. He was not upset. He was awesome and comforted me and never sweat about fixing the damage. The reason I went to another salon is because I dont live in Chicago. I live in Schaumburg and it became taxing to drive out, but after that experience it's worth it. Love love love this place!!! First time going and Myra was my hairstylist. She was so informative on how to take care of my hair and made me feel so comfortable while I expressed my concerns about all the damage I've done to my hair. Both her and the front door man gave me explicit directions on how to take care of my hair and it's officially been 2 weeks since my hair cut, and I can honestly see a big difference! I no longer have to do anything to my hair in order for it to look good. The products they advised me to buy has made my hair so much more shinier and manageable! I can let it air dry and rather than turning into a big-dry bush, my hair gets this natural pretty wave to it. I finally feel like my hair is on a healthy track!! Just got my first hair cut here with Ted! He's a master stylist and definitely earned that title. He was very friendly, made good conversation (and I dread talking normally when I'm getting a cut) and knew a ton about my hair type. He took time to make sure my cut was impeccable. The salon is cute and they have rumchata creamer (yum) and coffee/tea selections as well as small snacks. The young lady who shampooed was also quite sweet and friendly and gave a complementary hand massage (yay!). Every few weeks I try to come into Modern Wave in order to be serviced by Alex. From the time I walk in I am greeted by name and if I am a bit early, I am guided back to the waiting area. Once Alex takes you he sits you in his large working station you are seated in a comfortable, new barber chair. I did not know until a few days ago, not only does Alex offer hair cuts, but also facial hair services. As always his haircuts are exactly what I want and he is very talented on letting you know what will look good and what will not. He is exactly the barber you want, especially if you are indecisive. I still highly recommend Modern Wave because of the atmosphere and the quality and the consistency of the haircuts. read more

The reviews for this place had me walking in with high hopes of a good experience. Unfortunately, I can't say that my actual experience matched what I hoped for. Maybe I hit Modern Wave on an off day. I showed up about 10 minutes before my appointment but ended up waiting until almost 45 minutes past my appointed time. They knew that I was a new client, but during my wait time, no one introduced themselves; no one told me who my stylist would be. They assured me that someone would be with me soon, but I felt lost as to who that would be. There was no explanation on the delay. Also, while I'm sure assigning different people to different roles can help with efficiency, I felt like it made for an impersonal experience. One person washed my hair; another cut my hair; another straightened my hair. When my stylist passed me off to the straightener, she said she would be back after my hair was done; never came back, so I had no clue what to do next. My overall experience just felt...I'm not sure how to say it...discombobulated, I guess. It really wasn't terrible, but I didn't feel like a lot of time or energy was spent trying to figure out what I wanted from my haircut. I had hoped this place would work out because it's a little closer to my home than my previous salon, but I think I'll be making the extra drive for a more personal experience. read more

I had been coming here years ago, even though i didn't live in Bridgeport. I was always happy with the haircuts. About three years ago, after moving into the neighborhood, I came in, and on the owner's recommendation, I decided to get my hair colored. He wanted to try a color that would not clash with my face color (???) and I told him to do whatever he wanted...AS LONG AS I DIDN'T HAVE TO COME IN EVERY 2 WEEKS TO TOUCH UP THE ROOTS. I worked, had two young kids at home, a husband working the afternoon shift and I didn't have time to come in that often...at the time, getting into the salon every 6 months was a treat! Well, he did his magic and my hair looked BEAUTIFUL!!! The style, the color was great, although it seemed really light. I was only used to getting subtle highlights prior to this. He assured me I would be able to go a couple of months before having to get a touch up. The cost was pricey because it included a cut, de-color (?), and color. I came home and my husband almost jumped me when I walked in. He loved it! Well, 2 weeks go by and I start to see these really dark roots coming out. After the third week, I couldn't stand it anymore, went to the drugstore, got an over the counter hair coloring kit, and dyed my hair back to my natural color. Don't get me wrong, if I had the time (like I do now) I would have kept up the look. But because I didn't and I specified I didn't, I was angry and didn't come back for about 3 years. I found a new place on North Ave. that was awesome, but a trek for me, especially if there was traffic. I tried to get a last minute appt. there one day and couldn't get in and so I decided to try Modern Wave again. I am glad I did. I left happy, came back again, and let Ted work his magic AGAIN. I explained the past situation to him and he found a color for me (that also covered the grey) and now I'm coming in on a regular basis.
