I am so upset right now! Last month my bill was almost 400.00 and our air conditioner was not working so we turned it off. I paid the bill but found double was taken out of my account. So I just now look at my mid bill and it's over 600.00. They didn't give me back my my money, and doubled my bill from last month. Absolutely the worst utility customer service: arrogant, heartless, devoid of empathy -- toward its customers. A customer of the utility since September 1988, in the 35 years I've been a customer, I've never seen any such heartless arrogance. I have set up autopay four times with the company, the first time with a Modesto bank located on J Street. My wife was dying, and I was attending to her 24/7: I couldn't be distracted on the phone or by leaving the house to stand in line for almost an hour to pay my bill (outgoing mail theft in my area had caused several payments to be missed, and yes, I gave MID the number of the Modesto Police Report I filed and copies of my correspondence with the US Postal Service regarding the theft). I made arrangements in my bank's Customer Service department to have the bill paid automatically, sitting at the service rep's desk with MID on speakerphone: we set up the accounts exactly as specified, and although there was adequate funds available, not one payment was made. MID blamed an error made in the process, and bank personnel patiently followed the step-by-step instructions a second time. Once again, the debit of the account by MID did not go through. A third attempt, same results. With each failure, I had to pay several months worth of late fees. I'm a disabled veteran and can't stand for hours motionless in a line, Try waiting in line for hours with a dying, febrile woman cooking in your car. Yes, there are nurses who will tend to someone in the home while you're gone. They don't always show up. I attempted to have autopay set up through my Credit Union, and describing the previous failure with one of Modesto's local banks, the credit union manager and I sat in her office and made arrangements, on the phone with MID Customer Service, following step-by-step instructions, set up bill pay with my account with one of California's largest credit unions. Again, auto-pay failed: MID cited an error made as the reason for each of the successive three failures to establish the autopay. Privately, the branch manager said my experience was in no way unique. My insurance company has a banking division, and I pleaded for their help in getting an autopay account setup with MID. The first attempt failed; we seemed to have worked out the bugs as, finally, the first successful auto payment was made. My wife became critically ill then died. Months later, I'm told that none of the payments have been made after the second payment of the second attempt with my insurance company's bank. Very unusual that MID alone has these problems, as the five other autopay accounts debit my banking account with amazing regularity obverse the last four years. My attorney and I have detailed these problems with MID, and we have gathered the evidence of the previous attempts to setup the MID autopay account. I am not alone in having these difficulties: my attorney has had the same problems. I know that MID is in significant financial trouble and am convinced that the utility is deliberately sabotaging the autopay process in order to fleece its customers with late payment penalties and charges. Owing millions after the scandal with PG&E resulted in their loss of a huge lawsuit, the utility has sunk to these depths. I've paid hundreds of dollars in late fee penalties, had my service turned off three times, the last two without ANY notice (as per state utility rules) -- even to though we filed the exceptions with my wife's medical equipment. News flash: Apple devices won't work on any of their customer service schemes to pay your bill. I called this morning after the fifth attempt to setup autopay has failed. Waited three times over an hour: each time, the call has terminated with the cell call being dropped. I'm on the phone now, holding, an estimated wait time of 169 minutes: forget the callback feature. It doesn't work. read more

Even though I worked for MID, they strive to be a responsive Public Utility. The Employees are helpful and caring. They have regulations from the state of California that must be carried out, even when those regulations are not in the best benefit of their costumers. read more

I will never move to another city where MID is the source of electricity. We paid half our bill last month with every intention of paying this month, plus current. It's just last month we had unexpected expenses. We get a notice dated 10/5/23 on 10/12/23, a week after the date of the letter. I check my mail everyday. The notice says to pay by 5PM on 10/12 or we'll be shut off without further notice. I get they need to be paid but looking at our payment history will tell you we pay in full every month and have for the last 4 years we've been using them. Called their number and pressed the number for emergencies and it just rang and rang. What kind of emergency number doesn't answer. I have an elderly woman in my home that I care for 24/7 that lives in a hospital bed and her bed was stuck in the upright position until power was restored. We weren't shut off. It was a city wide power outage but their hours are M-F, 8-5. Had we been shut off, she would've been stuck sitting for over 40 hours until they opened on Monday morning. I was just on hold for 1.5 hours and MID hung up-NOT ME!!!!!!!!! I AM FURIOUS!!!! WTF is the person answering the phone for if they can't even answer questions???? THIS IS LUDACRIS!!!! When I told her that I had been hung up on she quickly interrupted me and said, "it is the first of the month, after a holiday and we have a new billing system," then she transferred me to the long phone hold AGAIN. My services were interrupted due to $30.75 and to get reconnected, I needed to pay the 30.75 + 70 to reconnect, all fine..I get it. But then they asked for an $1100 deposit! They are raping their customers. ANYONE who gets their services disconnected, is not going to have 1100. They said "oh you'll get it back in 12 months, when you pay every month on time." I asked them how many customers get their deposits back. They said plenty. Lying asses. Called them and they say they changed over to a new system and are giving me a "consideration" to pay this bill before they send it to collections. But somehow it was generated after I paid my final bill a year ago. I have no recourse. Must pay a bill they generated for use during a time I had already paid a bill for. In over 36 years of service I called once to ask for an extension on the $50.52 I could not pay from my current bill. I could pay it prior to the next bill. I called the week before my bill was due. Without notice my service was disconnected and I had to pay an additional $70. I was never told they would not extend my due date for $50.52 for 20 days once is over 36 years. After disconnect I was told I called too soon. How does a consumer know what date is too soon and why didn't they tell me to call back at a later date? Zero stars of that was possible. Horrible customer service. Power was out at my sons Apartment so he checked online to see if it was already reported. He was unable to get the info on line so he called MID. The lady he spoke to ad owed there was a problem due to down power lines. My son said he understood and asked when she thought power would be restored. She told him within the next 30 min or so. He thanked her and also said he was glad it would be fixed quickly since we were expecting terrible rain storms tonite. Her reply was "sir we can't control the weather". Upon doing research, I found this is called "Oracle Utilities Customer Self Service" and it looks like either nobody took the time to configure it properly or MID just spent a bunch of money on garbage software. The highest of high cost utility bill ever. Unfortunately we have no choice in Modesto but to deal with their high fees. They turn you off, make no effort to work with you because they can make extra money and we have no choice. Then, when you pay your bill after a shut off you have to pay a reconnect fee. Some people are told they have to wait a few days to get it reconnected after bill is paid. If you pay twice as much.for the reconnect fee they will do it sooner. There ought to be a law read more

We moved into a new house over a holiday weekend. When we called switch our pg & e service, the didn't mention to us that they would only be transferring the gas and that MID would be taking over the electric. Once we realized that (the Friday before the move) and called MID to get our service set up, we were told that it was "after hours" and the person who turns on service wasn't available. They told us our ONLY OPTION was to wait until Tuesday to have electricity. So here we are, family of 5 with 3 small kids, and no electricity for 3+ days. This seems ridiculous. MID does NOT care about customers! overcharges, pay (in advance) bills and get a late charge. MId switches dates/late charge. MID adds many days to the bill; BIG bill! later small amount of days, but mostly to confuse customers. Customer for over 30 years had to set up a deposit on a new account. cosign for family, but two years later MID did not allow to switch to other persons name without a deposit. Maybe now with solar, it can be more competitive. Any credits buyer/user beware MID will RIP YOU OFF! Check your bill MID over charges because people do not look at bills. read more

We moved to Salida from Manteca July of 2016. We have always had Pg&e where we lived. Upon buying the home nobody ever informed us of MID. When we moved into our home our neighbor told us we had to sign up with MID we were really surprised that we had to split our electricity from Pg&e we still have Pg&e but we only get charged heating through them. When we received our first bill from MID ontop of our usage we have to pay a 20 fee every month just because they feel like it that's ridiculous! I hope something changes to where it becomes only pg&e because I don't feel Anyone should pay a extra 20 fee just because. Wish we would have known all of this before moving here we would have chosen the house in Manteca that was our second choice instead. read more

It is hard to understand how we allow only one utility company to offer services in this town. This company has rude customer service people working for them. Their employees are not helpful or pleasant to deal with. The website for MID offers very few internet services. The information is not easy to extract online. I thought that the concept behind internet access was to cut down on people having to go during business hours to handle their accounts...MID likes to keep people missing time on their jobs and spending money on gas to get down to the office. After your release of the new online system your company continues to fail at the most basic operation, billing! I've tried numerous times (8 or 9) to connect to a live person only to hear the recording that your company is to busy to handle calls. Half the time I get hung up on, seriously ... that's how you want to handle this problem. Stick your head in the sand... I have been trying to get my bill for last month, nothing in the mailbox and your online web app continues to show last months bill. Also, I'm a solar customer and I'm not seeing before and after reading taken from my meters on the bill. This information is critical to validate MIDs calculations, otherwise customers could be billed incorrectly like the month of September. Anything less than full disclosure is unacceptable. I fully expect the haphazard role-out of new MID web application and all its associated problems to be brought to the medias attention. I also will be holding elected members accountable for this substandard response from MID. I will be electing (and promoting) new members that will hold management accountable ...... Yelp members take your issues out against Modesto Irrigation District by voting to change the MID board members, hopefully they can get a new manager in there to handle customers. Feel free to post this message on Facebook, Twitter or any local news agency. The customers will not get heard until the media makes this an issue for MID! read more

When I came to Modesto in 1974 the MID had the lowest rates in the nation. I came from Sacramento which had one of the highest rates. Over the years they have come to like the sugar and now each and every employee is paid an average of $90,000 a year according to the Bee. "oh, but we are mandated to provide blah blah blah of our energy with green sources and that means we pay more". So does every other district in the nation. Now, MID has among the highest rates in the entire couontry. I wonder why? I see according to my latest bill surcharge after surcharge. I pay an extra 15.00 a month for an alley lite because the alley where I live is so dark. I noticed the other night that it turns on and off throughout the night. What a legalized scam. No use complaining. It does not change. Utilities are like the government. There are no choices. read more

There are no online services except through a very expensive Western Union site (but that is only for payment, not for cancelling or setting up services). The customer service phone line will, 9 times out of 10, tell you that there is no one available to help you due to a large call volume and then will simply hang up. There is a leave-a-message-and-get-a-call-back serice which would be great except that they do not call you back, so your only option is to keep calling back until the system allows you to wait for a customer service rep. There is no paperless billing. Until last week, there was no automated phone payment service (everything had to be done in person, through snail mail, or over the phone -- leading to high volume of calls). If you plan to set up or cancel your service, plan on a couple of hours to try to get through, but when you finally do get through, you might reach a very nice customer service agent, but that doesn't make up for time lost doing a ridiculously easy task. You can cancel your service through fax or snail mail, but that does not make sense in all situations, and you need to be near a printer to do so. When I set up my initial service, I finally decided it would be easier to go into the office in person, but the line was the longest that I've ever seen at any public office - it was incredible! I think that says something about the way things are set up. One more thing that bothered me: you always have to pay a deposit when setting up service. Even if you have a splendid credit score, backed up with years of never-late payment history with PG&E, they will still ask for a deposit from you, or else ask you to jump through all kinds of hoops to not pay the deposit. read more

My sister and I have been MID customers for a couple years. We had a problem with our bill one time - apparently the auto payments hadn't renewed and the bill had not been paid for a while. I currently live in Idaho so my sister was supposed to be keeping track of the payments. I got a final notice in the mail and freaked out, so I called the customer service. They were very helpful in laying out my options and told me what the consequences were for missing payments (none other than losing "good standing").
