Stopped in here to get some items. Never been before but the shelves were partially filled with breakfast pastries and petits-fours only. I was a little disappointed. Taste - 3 stars. Prices - 5 stars. Cupcakes - 85¢ !!! Cookies - 37¢ !!! The LOW PRICES (and the fact that they take Discover credit card) are what make me wish they had a location closer to me. However, the taste of all the items I got was just okay at best. My cousin and I shared my sample box, looked at each other after each bite, and just shrugged our shoulders with confusion over all the hype. The hubby, however, loved the petit fours and strawberry cupcake. My sample box (total: $6.47): vanilla petit four 1.71 chocolate petit four 1.95 peanut butter drop w/chocolate .37 pecan drop with icing .37 white sand tart .37 strawberry cupcake .85 vanilla cupcake .85 My 1st bite of the chocolate petit four kind of reminded me of my mama's Coca-Cola cake (my mama's tastes better, but don't tell them I said that). I love white sand tarts and haven't met one that I didn't like. Everything else was just okay. I guess all the rave from other Yelpers got me really excited with high expectations. Parking is a hassle. We got there just in time, because right after I walked in, 7 other people walked in right after me. I got nervous for taking my time at the counter with only two women working the busy phones and the line with friendly customers. I've got to hand it to Moeller's Bakery though. They do have a great reputation, not just with Yelpers but also with non-Yelpers. I talked with several customers in line and they said that they've been regulars here for years and they claim that the petit fours and cakes are the best. As a disclaimer, I was going to give Moeller's a four-star rating regardless of anything else I tried there after a bite of their white cake with vanilla frosting. Wow. Whether you're looking for a perfect sugar rush or rush of nostalgia, Moeller's has you covered. The cake was perfectly moist and had the most divine crumb I have encountered in a cake not of the pound variety in ages. The vanilla buttercream brought back my best memories of birthday parties and getting my "birthday cake" on my brother's birthday for many years. I'm surprised more people didn't have a similar tradition, honestly. Since enjoying a slice of that cake, Moeller's has been at the top of my list of destinations to try. I've recently decided to start eating like I care about my insides so I've balked the last couple of times I considered going. Mother's Day provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate with some treats so I moseyed on over. Forget all those bakeries with their perfect, sexy dollops of frosting on cupcakes and lavender-rose-lemongrass macarons that add to your guilt because of the conspicuous and ridiculous consumption of spending $5 on a mini-mojito cupcake. This is where you come if you're in the mood for apple pie or cupcakes or cinnamon rolls. In other words, here are a REAL woman's treats. The Petit Fours seemed to be a must so I ordered a half-dozen. They are as pretty and dainty as the cakes you see laid out with tea in Victorian paintings. I would have begged to come here all the time as a little girl had I grown up in Houston. What I was unprepared for, however, was how incredibly sweet they are. Just scanning my other reviews reveals that I am not a woman who shies away from sugar. My parents couldn't handle the sweetness and I thought I couldn't either after the first bite. I should have just stopped while I was ahead (after the second bite) because I fell prey to their lure and ate the rest of the half-dozen. D'OH. After that embarrassing revelation, I may as well go full-confessional and mention the orange rolls and apple slice I bought as well. The apple slice was very good. The apples were so fresh and while it was also very sweet, I came here because I was seeking that sort of sweetness. I loved that the pastry highlighted the apples more than the pastry itself. The orange rolls were delightful. The citrus cut the richness of the rolls perfectly and they weren't too sweet. They were the perfect Sunday morning treat. My parents absconded with the rolls back to North Texas. *tear* Admittedly, I was expecting my order to be less expensive given the other reviews but with all those petit fours, it may make sense. I still wouldn't call Moeller's a steal as implied in other reviews, however. I was chatting with a regular customer in line and she told me the carrot cake was the best in town and the best deal at the bakery for $6 a loaf. She got the last loaf though! I did not have a pleasant experience. This is my first time ordering from this place and it was a cake for my wife's birthday. First off, right when you enter from front door, grumpy 2 staff members who will stare at you for a while, and who seem to favor their friend customers with free samples to try while waiting while ignoring to offer the same courtesy to me the new good citizen standing in line. I requested a plastic slicer for my cake that all decent cake shops provide, and was given a "no" answer. Really? A $45 cake and you cannot toss in a 25 cent slicer for your customer convenience? No owner responsible for this staff behavior? Seems they stay in business due to same old friends coming over. If you're new customer, expect a trashy reception. Oh, Moellers! Three. I think that's how old I was when I first stopped in here during a day of resale shopping with my mom and great aunt. (Although it could have also been one of my grandmothers, as well.) Moeller's was a favorite amongst the Bellaire and West U crowd, and as there was a great resale shop (now closed, torn down, and turned into a Little Woodrows) very near here, it was a logical choice in mid-day snacking. Although when my mom wasn't involved, my great aunt and her cousin/my grandmother would go grab a beer and Mexican food. Buttercream frosting. Petit fours. Lots of old fashioned recipe baked items. Sheet cakes with the large "that's my slice" roses on top. Ladies behind the counter who are a bit snarky to the 90% female clientele. After standing in line with a few of these pushy old bitties who attempted to cut in front of me, I don't blame the workers. Sheesh. My advice upon entering the door, wear your smile like you mean it. And think, "you are about to get dessert." Meditate on that. In fact, this is one of those places where "a smile goes a long way" is personified. You're most likely wondering why you should even bother enduring a bit of passive-aggressiveness. Let me be perfectly clear, their desserts and sweets are wonderful. They are known for their petit fours, but I have other favorites. Packages of tiny orange rolls. Perfectly sweet and tart; not SweetTart-ish. In 1992, Sonic Youth released a album that upon reading the name of one of the songs on the jacket liner for the first time, made me hop in my car during school and drive over to Moeller's. The title? "Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit." Raisin bars and various other old fashioned bars and cookies. Simple and plain, but nothing like you'd find in a new bakery with their chocolate and pumpkin flavor combinations. Moeller's is five stars for taste and minus two stars for ruining my wedding cake. I haven't had a chance to sample any of the cookies or other baked goods, so this review is focused solely on whole cakes. Moeller's makes the best strawberry cake around. It's moist, delicious and blinding neon pink, essential qualities in a strawberry cake. I was once told that pink strawberry cakes use artificial strawberry flavor because fresh strawberries won't hold up or flavor the batter the right way. I'm not sure whether that is true of Moeller's strawberry cake, and I actually don't care because it is yummy. Moeller's also makes a mean Italian Creme Cake, and I presume their other flavors to be equally as delicious. Also, their buttercream icing is just the right balance, not too sickly sweet as can sometimes be the case. On the cake decorating side, in my experience, they can do a decent job with piped buttercream and edible confetti. My mom's birthday cake was appropriately festive, but nothing you'd see on the Food Network. As for my wedding cake, they were given a picture of the cake that I wanted from a Martha Stewart magazine. Three round layer cakes, with tiny icing pearls - very, very simple, no edging and no topper. The layers sat on top of each other, so would have had to have been supported by dowels so that the bottom layer wouldn't collapse in on itself. In any case, on the morning of my wedding, they called to ask what we wanted on the tiers. Had I been taking the call, my answer to this question would have been "Are you trying to ruin my big day? I don't want ANYTHING on the tiers because MY cake doesn't have any tiers." When I saw the final cake, I almost cried right there at the reception. What in my mind (and in the picture I'd given) had been an elegant and beautiful cake, was now a two-foot monstrosity. Instead of icing pearls, I had varying sizes of white discs that gave the effect of polka dots, and each layer was on awful plastic tiering. The sides of the cake had been passed through with an icing comb, presumably because they couldn't get a sheer finish and couldn't figure out what else to do. Top and bottom of each layer had piped edges, like some nightmare creature gone mad with a pastry bag and tip set. I still can't look at our photos without cringing when we get to the cake. To be fair, I didn't give the bakery a chance to redress my grievances. This was almost nine years ago, I was just a kid, and I figured the wedding was over anyway and at least it had tasted good. And their cakes do taste good; I've used them since then for less important occasions. However, the fact that they had a picture of the cake I wanted and somehow managed to make the exact cake I didn't want pretty much makes the two stars I've taken irredeemable. read more

They keep it simple with chocolate, vanilla, and nuts. I was really happy with the selection I sampled here (petit fours, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, chocolate pecan cookie, pecan sandies, and chocolate peanut butter drops). I was particularly pleased by the price. A whole box of goodies for $8! The flavors here tend to fit that old-fashioned American, simple palate. Not too sweet or super-rich. I have never had a bad experience here until recently. The products are great but the service needs work. Serious work. I came in to get some ideas for a birthday party and was met with indifference and no help. The attendant gave me a book and said to figure it out. A few days later I called in an order for petit fours and a small cake. When I went to pick them up the same attendant was rude and completely not helpful. The color on the cake was wrong and I was informed they could re work it but it would take " a while ". Maybe this person was just having some bad days. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt but please realize that customer service is as important as the product. read more

Moeller's is the taste that Houstonians grew up with. Working in "food and beverage", I frequently work with pastry chef's when I need petit fours. That is a classic French definition of many small, delicious and complicated bites. It is a lot of painstaking work. And, if the room is filled with the native Houstonian, they are generally unimpressed with this kind of presentation. However, a plate of Moeller's petit fours and we go nuts. Yes, I confess, I am a native and I too have the Moller's petit four gene. Delicious, two bite chocolate with a poured chocolate sugar icing or vanilla with a poured vanilla icing, these things remain unchanged (though slightly smaller and $1.75 now) as a relic of a simplier and easier time when one of the two sisters Moeller used to sit at the cash register at the store on Times Blvd. and give you a ginger snap or cookie if you were good. Today, Moeller's is still my choice not just for petit fours for teas, brunches or a perfect afternoon snack, but also for King Cake for Mardi Gras, for cinnamon rolls, lemon pound cake, gingersnaps and more. Everyone will be asking you where you got it, or if you're a fraud who pretends you made it, you'll get some requests for the recipe. It does have a homemade feel to it because it looks so plain. But don't be fooled by the exterior; it's really, really good, especially the cream cheese frosting. Unfortch, I wasn't the most popular at my last potluck. I was the one (shamefully) rushing to get rotisserie chicken at the grocery store after work. Now that I've discovered my new secret weapon, I'll be frequenting this bakery. All of the Yelpers have been raving about this place but I really don't find anything special. Sorry ya'll!!! I came here with one of my co-worker because we were craving for something sweet (I definitely have a sweet tooth) and once entering into Moeller's Bakery it smelled like mildew and well I know that the bakery is old and been around for a long time... So, I didn't really think too much about it because I was ready to try their imfamous petit four. I got 2 chocolate and 2 vanilla petit four plus 2 cream puffs which came out to $10 dollars. I took a bite from the chocolate petit four and it was super sweet yet gritty. The vanilla one was not as sweet as the chocolate one but it was alittle bit better than the chocolate one. The cream puff is not good either which really bites! I really wanted this to be really four stars but it is not. :( read more

It is impossible for me to be objective about Moeller's, since they were the source of all my childhood birthday cakes. The white cake with white icing (extra flowers on my piece, please) is perfect. The chocolate is a close second, especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream added in the comfort of your own home/birthday party. Other favorites are petits fours (for when you don't have a decent excuse to buy and eat an entire cake), thumbprint cookies, and gingerbread men. I also had a pretty tasty eclair recently. I love white cake, but I'm usually a little fearful to eat it, because it's all too often a dried out mess. Moeller's Bakery is staffed by cake-making geniuses, because their white cake is moist, delicious, and amazing. I know it wasn't a fluke because I had a petite four and later a slice of vanilla cake, and the inside was uniformly wonderful both times. I don't think it can be done any better than this and before Moeller's, I didn't even think white cake could be so moist! The only letdown with Moeller's was in the "buttercream" frosting. I put it in quotes because the butter was clearly in name only. It tasted simply as if water and confectioner's sugar were blended with a thickening agent before being spread over the top and sides...definitely not my idea of buttercream or even good frosting. Other than texture, I couldn't taste a difference between the petite four icing and the "buttercream" frosting on the cake. It's a real shame, because the cake portion gave me a new view on what skilled bakers can do with white cake. The petites fours are outstanding and work much better with the thin-on-flavor icing, because the cake is designed to be the star of the show. I'll skip the details, though; it's already been said by many others far better than I could hope to do. The bottom line: I'm definitely looking forward to going back, but I think I'll steer clear of items with Moeller's white frosting. read more

Moeller's Bakery is one of those places that I imagine were commonplace in the 1950's. It's a small, normal bakery that just makes cakes, cookies, etc. Some things are available to buy at the counter, but they also do custom cakes for you. I tried their petit fours, which are too easy to pronounce wrong (it should be pedifor.) Their petit fours are delicious. The cake that they use is the lightest cake I've ever eaten, and the icing is just right. I definitely plan to come back here again. read more

I chose Moeller's after reading some of the reviews.. Yelp rarely lets me down. I called down to the bakery to order a cake for my best friends birthday.. She loves carrot, but I wanted it decorated other than your standard Kroger special. The lady on the phone was super nice, helpful, and I couldn't believe how affordable it was. When I went to go pickup on a Saturday mid morning, it was busy but I got helped right away. The cake was so freaking cute! I really loved the look of it. Of course I couldnt leave this place without picking up a few cookies and other small things for my family, and they were so cheap, like .25-.50 each. I don't know anywhere that charges those prices anymore! The cake.. man.. it was a hit! Everyone loved it, the taste, texture, all right on. I was looking for ideas for my sister's baby shower. I read the great reviews on yelp and decided to try out Moeller's. Petit Four: 3/5 - I think that for $2/piece, it's a tad expensive. I thought about buying these as a dessert option for the shower, but by the time I got enough for each guest, I could have purchased a nicely decorated and yummy cake from Whole Foods. The taste is nice and texture is great. I couldnt justify paying over $60 for these bite-sized desserts instead of a cake that could feed more for the same price. Decorated cookies: 4/5 - the icing was perfectly sweet for the cookie. I bought a cookie decorated as a sunflower and the design was pretty, and not rushed. Wedding cookies: 2/5 - These are the ones that are dusted with powdered sugar; very dry and unflavorful. read more

A friend brought a box of vanilla and chocolate petit fours over for dinner the other day. I've heard the stories about Moellers' legendary petit fours many times before - I have family friends from Fulshear who take their out-of-town relatives all the way into the loop for some pastries from this little bakery, which says a lot about their reputation. I can testify that Moeller's petit fours are amazing. They melt in your mouth instantly. I prefer the chocolate ones because I like the layer of coca aftertaste, but some other people who tried it with me did enjoy the vanilla better. I think it just depends.
