During our meal, a livestream from Mecca was playing on the television, and there were religious materials available near the counter. We were downtown after a concert, looking for someplace that was still serving food, but also wouldn't have a 45 minute wait. We saw this spot as we were driving around looking for parking, and it was full of people at 10:30, so we thought we would give it a shot. It was excellent! Tried this spot when my friend was craving lamb chops and I was looking for Mediterranean for dinner. This is a beautiful location with charming 2-seater booths. Moe's Vegetarian in San Luis Obispo is just like any other Mediterranean place you'll find. The restaurant was clean and tidy, and the prices seemed reasonable considering it's in a tourist town. I was definitely impressed by the portion sizes, and one of my favorite dishes was the baba ganoush. The waffles were average in taste, but my friends really enjoyed their plates. One had chicken and the other went with just hummus for a vegetarian option. They do have outdoor seating, which is nice since dogs are welcome on the patio. The one thing that threw me off is that they only offer bottled water. I think this might be a violation of California's restaurant code, where guests should be provided water on site if requested, not just bottled. That is probably the only reason I'd take a star away, because I do hope they consider serving regular water to their guests. Especially for people like me who don't want to use plastic and may have forgotten their water bottle at home. read more

We stopped by here on our roadtrip through SLO. The food itself was outstanding. I got the lamb chops and the lamb was cooked perfectly, the pita bread was warm and fluffy, the hummus was super tasty, and I did enjoy the fresh salad. They give you a bottle of tzatziki to use, and we did so liberally. The issue I had with this restaurant was the ordering. This may be due to it being a busy night (Valentine's day) but the girl at the register was really struggling with the system. We checked the ordering 3 times bc of hidden costs, like charging us for the combo meal and then recharging for the beverage on the side. Some people did already mention that this place only serves bottled water, but when I said I was dining in I saw that an additional 10% charge was added to my bill. I'm not from here so not sure if this was par for the course but it's a rare occasion when I get charged for ordering and then charged for eating there. Sauce is extra too (saw afterwards). Then, the modifications that we requested didn't actually happen and the extra sauce, etc wasn't delivered so we had to keep following up. The gentleman who I assume was the owner did end up bringing us everything but it was a little frustrating to have to keep asking before ordering/ after sitting down to get everything right. The way their Gyro Sandwich is prepared differs from others, as the sandwich contains sautéed red onions and the lavash wrap is grilled on both sides. We love Moe's! With one caveat that will sound a bit odd: go at lunchtime. Only lunchtime. We have been there at least 6x for lunch and it's always 10/10, but the two times we've been at dinner time the meat has been dry and chewy. I will not speculate on why that is, I just know it to be statistically true. We love the chicken wrap, really great spices in it, and the spanakopita are the best I've ever had, honestly. SO CRISPY. This is a cute place in SLO that has plenty of options. We had a few vegetarian in our party and this was a great option! They are a fast casual restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. They offer restrooms in back which are big and clean. We had 2 dogs so sat outside. The baba ganoush was very tasty with a lot of pita bread to enjoy every spoon on of it. We went in a hot summer day and asked for water cups. They don't give ANY free water! It was a disappointment to not get water cups! They sell you members mark bottled water. Our second big disappointment was that they do not take food cross contamination seriously. We had a piece chicken in a veggie plate. That is not ok for someone who is NOT expecting chicken. Went in today for a quick to go bite on my lunch time. I ordered the gyro sandwich. The service was good. The guy was very patient as I was trying to decide what I wanted. I ordered and waited for my sandwich. It was quiet in there and my sandwich was ready in a decent amount of time. The restaurant was clean. A gentleman brought my sandwich and handed it to me at the table where I was sitting. The gyro sandwich was hot and fresh. I loved the sauce flavor on it. It was a bit messy to eat so I ended up eating it with a fork and threw out the bread. The meat tasted really good and there was a ton of meat in it; but I noticed a few hard pieces. It felt like a rock but I think it was just some super chewy meat. It was surprising since gyro meat is supposed to be all soft. Not sure if it was a tiny piece of bone or just not good quality meat. It happened 3-4 times. I was also kind of confused by the veggies on it. There was lettuce, cabbage, red bell peppers, cucumbers, and onions. I've never had cabbage on a gyro before. One more before my 5-hour train ride back to SFV. So I looked around and decided on Moe's Mediterranean. They had just what I was looking for: a side order of falafel (3 pieces for $3). The falafel was nothing to write home about. Lacked the inside grit and intense flavor, even though the outside was fried to a good crisp. What I enjoyed most here was their selection of Arabic music. You really do not need to understand the lyrics (because I did not). However, the voices of the singers, the emotion in their tone and rhymes, is enough to take you to another place. That is how it should be, when you enter a restaurant.
