Looks like this place is popular with students in this university town. Ordering is through self service kiosks. They have a great self service sauce bar similar to Mexican restaurants as well. The variety of the sauces ranged from spicy to mild to zesty to creamy. They also had pickled radish and sumac onions. I got a chicken shawarma sandwich, priced at $12 it's a great value for the quality and quantity. It came with cucumbers, tomatoes, lots of chicken and a variety of sauces. It was pretty accurate which I appreciated! This was my first time having gyro and it was so good. I got a medium pizza to share and it was definitely enough. The meat was tender and there was a certain sweetness in the pizza that helped amplify the flavors together. They provided us with 2 ranches and we also asked for a side of garlic butter. I wasn't too sure what to expect from the outside, but after walking in I was pleasantly surprised by how clean, organized & stylish the interior is. The service was fast & friendly, and after a short wait my BBQ Cilantro Chicken pizza arrived. It was fresh & delicious. The Rosewater Pudding was a sweet way to end the meal. The meal was pretty affordable too. Some notes for Muslim diners. Petra has a rather extensive bar, in case you're wary of alcohol. There is no pork on the menu, but the beef pepperoni & Canadian turkey bacon are not halal. Every other meat is halal though. Came in for dinner and the place was very busy. You can either order at the counter or a self service screen. Then, take a number and grab a seat. They bring the food to you. Considering how packed it was, the ease of ordering and receiving our order went great. There's complimentary hot tea and a sauce bar full of options. Everything we had ordered came out delicious. This isn't your typical pizza joint, Petra does things with a Mediterranean twist. We got a large pizza and did half Gyro, half Tri-Tip. Gyro: Somehow this really does taste like a gyro but in the format of a pizza. The only thing that I'd prefer personally is to have it be a bit more saucy. Nothing the sauce bar couldn't help amplify - I feel the sauce bar was designed for this particular pizza to be honest. Significant cheese pull from the mozzarella with this, it almost overpowered the other toppings on this half of the pizza. The gyro is soft, tender, perfectly seasoned. Tri-Tip: I did prefer this side of the pizza though I could appreciate that a Gyro pizza isn't just a novelty menu item. I do prefer marinara sauce pizzas and this one didn't as many sauces from the sauce bar to help enhance the overall flavor. The tri tip was tender without being overcooked. Didn't make me miss pepperoni or sausage in the slightest. The sauce bar deserves its own mention and I'd argue it's what really makes Petra so good. It was hard to choose a favorite, they were all distinct enough and they all had their place at the bar. Lemon pepperoncini: Pretty sour and tangy while also bringing the heat, I kept coming back to this one to cut through the extreme cheesiness of the Gyro pizza. Chipotle: If I had to pick one that you could skip, it might be this one. Creaminess isn't really needed with the cheese pull the Gyro Pizza provides. This one might have paired better with another pizza but was the odd one out in my opinion. I would have liked a little more heat in this one. We finished it just so we wouldn't waste it. There is a "Take all you want, but eat all you take" sign which I think is great to discourage wasteful behavior. Shatta: I'd liken this to a karamiso-based spicy sauce that would accompany a rich bowl of tonkotsu ramen. This, of course, is its own thing and is just as tasty if not more so. There is an oiliness to it that isn't overwhelming because the heat of it comes through. I feel this would pair well with any pizza. Serrano: If I had to choose a favorite, it would be this one. It tastes very "green" which balances out "heavy" the pizzas are. Brings a brightness to any pizza - a must for anyone who feels like a salad or green component is missing from their meal. The presence of pickled turnips and sumac onions only make the sauce bar even better. The crispy sourness of these toppings cuts through the fattiness of the pizza. Petra also has some beers and ciders on tap. There couldn't be a better pairing with pizza. A must-go, Petra isn't one to miss. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Everything is well-kept. Tables are regularly being cleaned as soon as a party leaves a table.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You'd expect a place that sells pizza and beer to look somewhat unkempt but this isn't the case. The sauce bar also isn't a sloppy mess like you'd expect; it's well-maintained. This pains me, but I must report that their gluten-free pizza is close, but it is NOT CELIAC SAFE. It used to be, so it was an awful surprise last week when I developed the tell-tale signs of being "glutened" & couldn't eat solid food at all for a three days, and then only rice for three more. I'm 80% okay now, 9 days later. That's a steep price for 2 slices of a small pizza. My family & I love this place so it's a loss. Just a word to my fellow Celiacs, I don't trust their kitchen. BEWARE OF UNINFORMED STAFF REGARDING ALLERGENS Uninformed staff or liars? I feel completely violated after our last visit. We have eaten at Petra MANY times and have informed the person taking our order every time that we need our meals to be completely dairy free. We usually get the falafel plate with rice. They have always been seemingly accommodating, letting us know that the tzatziki has dairy in it but allow us to sub it for something else. They however have NEVER said anything else has dairy in it... until our most recent visit! The staff taking our order let us know that actually the rice has dairy in it (butter). We were shocked and asked if that's been a recent change, but she said it has always been that way. We were in disbelief. It is so unbelievably dangerous to have uninformed staff members in the food industry regarding allergens. People die from allergies all the time, people have religious restrictions, and people take their dietary restrictions very seriously. I am appalled by what we learned and our family (who has patronized Petra for years) will not be coming back. We have loved going to Petra but unfortunately we do not feel safe to eat there anymore. Despite being crowded, we were able to find seats right away as the restaurant is quite large. I ordered a medium pizza and tri tip plate to share between two people. It ended up being the perfect amount of food portioning for us both. The pizza was really cheesy with just the right balance of garlic and chicken. The trip tip plate was also decent. We split a pizza with extra works. I ordered a beet salad and R ordered a tri-tip sammy. Ok then , Salads were out quite fast. On our way home from Northern California, we stopped at the town looking for a place to have a quick lunch. The restaurant was highly recommended on Yelp, so we decided to give it a try. It is a quite casual eatery with friendly staff. Ordering was very easy through its large overhead menu. We ordered gyro pizza and kabob combo. The pizza was perfectly baked. The crust was crispy on the edge and soft through the rest. The melting cheeses blended nicely with the tender meat. The kabobs were nicely grilled. The meats were tender and the veggies were lightly charred and flavorful. The rice was cooked to perfection, and the baked bread was a nice complement to the meal. The prices were reasonable.
