My family is from the island of Puerto Rico. Hands-down, the best Mofongo I've had Dominican or Puerto Rican style. Moving here from NY where the best cuchifrito is easily accessible, this is a close second and the alcapurria tastes like fried pasteles! Soooooo good. They could definitely use more staff, but since things are made fresh be prepared to sit a while. So worth the wait. Great staff and food. They sell pasteles year round. Tried this place a couple of times now and dare I say, it got better the second time around? Was very much hankering for bacalaitos, pana tostones, rice & beans. Simple and yummy. They're cooked perfectly and never too oily or soggy. Had other dishes here before. Service is good and friendly and the place seems to fit a decent amount of people between the tables, booth, and the bar area. I was hesitant for awhile to try Mofongo based on the reviews, but finally decided to via Doordash. One of the best parts about Puerto Rican and Dominican food is the flavors and somehow, this food is extremely bland and dry. I went with the Dominican side with pollo, arroz con gandules, and tostones. The arroz con gandules was nice and fluffy but needed salt (i never add salt to food after it's cooked), chicken was very dry and so were the tostones. Very disappointing overall. read more

I came and ordered two empanadas while I wait for the main course and I'm not impressed. The restaurant is very clean and the decor is nice but they lack in one important thing which is FLAVOR!!! My empanadas were so dry, there was more air in the empanada than actual meet, there was no flavor to both beef and chicken. After eating authentic Puerto Rican and Dominican food I'm able to taste the difference between this restaurant and others. Empanadas are $9 each and I couldn't eat neither, very disappointed in both flavor, price and quality!!!! Nice place. Casual ambiance. I patronized this restaurant during lunch hours. They do not offer lunch specials, which is unfortunate. Initially i was the only person in the restaurant at 12:45, on a Friday. By the time I left, there were five other people. The food, spot on! I'm from NYC, and very familiar with Dominican food; I love it. This place is the real deal. The service how ever, at least initially, not so much. I had to literally get up, after my food was served, to get the waitress's attention for additional napkins and hot sauce; there were three waitresses. I don't understand why my waitress was sitting down, with her back to me, engrossed in conversation with the other two waitresses. Especially given, I was the only patron at that time. The only reason I'm giving them this rating, is because the food was very good. I love the roasted pork (Pernil). It was seasoned perfectly, just a little dry. The skin... OMG. Exceptional!! The fact that i was able to order a side of the Pernil, with just the skin, also, contributed to this rating. I do recommend this restaurant. Seriously have no idea why the Yelp overall rating at this time is less than 4-5 stars! The food here left us impressed! Background - husband is PR/Dominican, and we've had mofongo in both Miami and PR. So back to the food - we enjoyed the bacalaitos were good, fresh out of the fryer - could use more codfish though, but overall very yummy. Our entrees were the pernil with arroz con gandules (rice and peas), and mofongo with shrimp. All deelish and flavorful. The standout was the mofongo for sure, they kindly gave us the extra sauce asked for too! Service was good, staff was friendly, restaurant and bathrooms were clean - no complaints! I went to Puerto Rico last month and fell in love with the island. I drive by this place every day and didn't realize it is PR and DR food. I decided to read the reviews and stopped in at opening. I ordered the shrimp mofongo. It was flavorful. The mofongo had a mild taste, which was great because the camarones were so flavorful. I would describe them as salty, but I honestly don't have a salty palate. Everything is salty to me! I opted to have the signature red sauce on the side and the garlic sauce. I was expecting the Garlic sauce to be like what I had in PR, which was creamy and flavorful. This sauce was only onions in oil. I ate half of the mofongo and all of the shrimp. I also ordered a vanilla flan to go. I was the only patron there, but the waitress was very attentive and nice. She was knowledgeable and open to share recommendations. I will definitely come back. Mofongos has got to be one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The staff are always nice and friendly. Despite the slightly high prices, you definitely get your money's worth with the big portions. The restaurant also has a full bar for those looking for a drink to pair with their meal. read more

I am aware that the restaurant is not in Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic, and so one must adjust down the expectations. We ordered for appetizers the bacalaitos were to brown burnt and not the "pinones" experience. For our main entries the Tres Golpes, which was the best selection. The two mofongos churrasco and peril were just ok after one hour of waiting for our food. The service was substandard. The waitresses noted everything we asked for and didn't miss a beat with our orders. They kept coming back to ask if there was anything else we wanted, but we were comfortably satisfied with their customer service. Now on to the food. The pastelitos/empanadas were just slightly hard and crispy, but tasted delicious. The entree's we ordered were spot on, and freshly made. Meanwhile still hot on the plate. That is always a plus being that we are from as well. A restaurant like this just not lose its touch of the savory taste that our culture has taught us. Been wanting to try this place for a long time, but never got the chance to. Finally, decided to order take out and I guess some things just didn't meet my expectations. See my ratings below: Ambiance: N/A - ordered takeout so can't speak too much to this. Price: 4/5 - Wasn't mad about the price I paid for the seafood mofongo or the tres leches cake. Food: 3/5 - Here is where I felt that it didn't meet the best standard for me. The tres leches cake I had tasted way too sweet, almost as if I was having a syrup. It wasn't as fluffy as most tres leches cakes are and for that reason I was a bit disappointed. The seafood mofongo was lacking in some flavor for me. The mofongo was decent but I felt the texture was a bit hard even for mofongo. Service: 5/5 - The hostess who gave me the order was very friendly and I would've definitely enjoyed dining in here. Overall, 3/5 as the food was decent at best and I was not blown away by any means. We went to San Juan for a week. We ate at places in the touristy areas. We ate at a food truck parked next to a gas station. We ate in Old San Juan. I had mofongo every day. I even ordered mofongo at a Chinese restaurant. The last day I ordered tostones instead of mofongo. I wish I had ordered mofongo then too. I love that stuff. So we had to come back to the DMV. One day we were just driving down the street, and Precious saw the sign for this place. We headed straight for it. The food is great. Precious likes mojitos and margaritas, and she reported that they were outstanding; and she's very particular. But the star of the show was the mofongo. I recommend the mofongo with bacalao which is, I think, cod fish. We asked to see the cook. It was a 50-something Dominican woman who said she'd been cooking mofongo since age 7. Great tasting - authentic fusion of Puerto Rican and Dominican cuisines! Over all the dining experience was good -- clean/ comfortable, welcoming. The only reason I couldn't give 5 stars was due to the speed of the service. It was very slow. I believe they only had one chef on at the time we were there. If you don't mind the 35-40 min wait I would recommend ordering in advance / pickup up. I visited Mofongo S.H in their early days and decided to give them a while. I had a taste for home and I went back last week for a caderito de pernil and another with chicken, one white rice and beans, the other con gandules, both with maduros. The portions were good and the flavors hit home. Sooo, I went back again this week. Mofongo is not at the top of MY favorites but I tried it with a Camaro es en salsa roja. What can I say aside from now I am a fan, at least of Modogo's recipe. I also had the carne guisada, nice tender meat. No pictures now but will add some another time soon. Well done Mofongo. Immediately walking in, I was impressed and how clean and orderly the establishment was. It wasn't exactly crowded. There was a birthday party going on, but it took me no time at all to get seated. Mofongo with lechon (pork), arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas)and 6 pork pasteles (made from grated plantains and wrapped in banana leaves, a real pain to actually make)The restaurant called me to say they were out of the pasteles which I really wanted to make this week. The lechon was very good, tasty, covered in a brown sauce that complimented the pork well. The mofongo I found to be dry, not very tasty were it not for the sauce and the arroz was a bit bland as well like they don't use sofrito or adobo when preparing it. So we almost didn't come to this place because the reviews are esa than stellar, but you know what?! I'm glad we came. My hubby, daughter, and I strolled in on. Saturday day afternoon for lunch, and it was really dope. There were about three other tables patrons when we walked in, and everyone appeared to be enjoying their food, so we were off to a good start! We were immediately seated, and they brought out a high chair for our little one. We ordered Presidente beer and a morir soñando, which if you don't know, is essentially a Dominican Orange Julius. That's how I described it to my husband, and he loved it! Also, my daughter crushed this drink, which brought me so much joy because I grew up drinking morir soñando! We came here for mofongo, fam. Yeah, they have other stuff on the menu, and it looks dope, but we came here for the mofongo, and mofongo is what we got! I ordered the shrimp mofongo and my hubby ordered the lechón mofongo! Both were great! My daughter ate some of both our plates, and she really loved it. The moving was not too dry, and it came with the sauces, which we asked for on the side. All of it was really flavorful and fresh! I'm really happy we came here. It's difficult to find authentic Dominican/Puerto Rican/Cuban food in the area, so this made me really happy to find. It smelled very great when you walk into the restaurant. I was so excited as I don't see many puertorican restaurants in our area. The alcapurrias we good, not what I am used to, they were flavorful to a point but not filled very much. For the price you pay for 2, you would think they'd be filled and bigger. They did not have relleno de papas which made me sad. So u got ensalada de pulpo. The pulpo tasted as if it were frozen and left out to thaw. It was warmer than I am accustomed to eating especially with it being salad. I didn't eat it all as the taste of the pulpo wasn't what I anticipated. The tostones didn't have much salt on them but I guess that was good because the bacalao guisado was salty. It was really good with three arroz con gandules. That was my favorite part of what I had was the arroz con gandules. I will go back to try something else as I believe they most likely have better choices for me. We really wanted to love this place but just couldn't. For perspective, Puerto Rican food makes up about 75% of our diet at home. We were really hoping to find a local place for our weekend dinner out, and a place to go with friends, but Mofongo isn't ready to be that local favorite. Pros: The restaurant & restroom was very clean. Had a peak at the kitchen as I passed by and it appeared to be just as clean and organized. It was another HOT day in NoVA so we're happy that the a/c was working great! Cons: our server was nice but unfamiliar with the menu, submitted our order incorrectly and was slow to respond. My iced tea was weak and had an odd sweet syrup added. They ran out of lemonade and tried to give my daughter water with a splash of lemon juice and sweetener. We opted for water instead but only had our small glass refilled once. My husband ordered the cube-steak with onions ($18) with a coke. He received a very thin piece of flank steak covered in undercooked onions and a flat soda. The flavor was ok but overall underwhelming. My cubano was ok, but definitely not worth $13! My daughter was served rice & beans when she ordered empanadas. They eventually arrived was we were close to finishing our lunch. Late, but she gave them a thumbs up on flavor. We need more authentic Caribbean food in the area so we'll probably try again but not until next spring. read more

I was was hungry for some Puerto Rican food. Hadn't been there in a while. They came through and provided some excellent mofongo

To start, I was warned about the quality of the food and the overpriced menu options for the portion size. I chose to try it regardless, since everyone's experience is different. The Good: Our waitress and restaurant front manager were kind and pleasant. The Alcappurias were decent. A bit salty but edible. The Mayo ketchup was good. Quiet atmosphere. Mostly empty. Waitress always had a water pitcher on hand for our endless refills. You'll soon know why. Told my husband that we could maybe return for the Alcapurrias. The Bad: The salsa Criolla for the "Mofongo los 5 Golpes" was Extremely salty. So much salt, it burnt my tounge, roof of my mouth and inner gum line. Still hurting and it's been 24 hours. So the 5 Golpes: 1.The chicken within the dish was dry. 2.The beef had good texture but since it was covered in the Sodium rich Criolla sauce, it was an hard to fully enjoy. 3.The fried pork still had the extra fatty layer and very greasy. 4. The fried cheese was good since it wasn't drenched in the sauce. 5. It came with only 3 shrimp. Salty do to the sauce that drenched the whole dish. Now for the Mofongo part of the dish. Expecting an amazing Mofongo since they used it to name their restaurant. Beyond salty and mega heavy on the garlic. It'll make your mouth raw and have you burping up Garlic for a couple of hours. Chicken Empanadas were dry. Pizza Empanadas were ok. Would I order them again? No. The masa was good, the filling not great. Passion fruit juice had an overwhelming amount of sugar. So much that it overpowers that unique aftertaste of the Parcha. The owner said the vendor sends the pulp. I suggested they'd take a look at the ingredients in the packaging, since it had the taste and texture of regular sugar cane sugar. She fought hard to defend her juice, even though our waitress felt exactly how we felt about the drink. The arroz con gandules was ok. Not a lot of flavor but edible. Would I order it again? No. The Ugly: The owner/chef came to the table and asked where were we from. How long did we live on the island. A lot of judgemental questions which she later used to defend her cooking because of how long she lived on the island just like me. We first shared with her the things we enjoyed to not be all "Negative Nelly's". She was fine with that and thankful for the compliment, UNTIL... we started to share our dining experience on the multiple items that were not to our satisfaction. She was on FULL defense mode, attitude and all. Comparing our experience with those of the other few people who had eaten there today. Saying things like "well no one else complained about their food today". Really!? Wow lol Saying that the front manager was wrong in saying that the kitchen did not taste test my food before leaving the kitchen. That they taste everything. The front manager apologized and said that they did NOT taste my Mofongo nor ANY other Mofongo that leaves the kitchen, since they're all made at the time of order. It tasted like they accidentally seasoned the Mofongo twice with salt. They offered to send out another Mofongo. They did. This one had zero salt but still a full heap of garlic for such a small portion. It was inedible. They made zero monetary compensation. The owner/cook was non-apologetic and stood her ground to defend her cooking. She made us feel that we were just complaining for just the sake of complaining. On full on defense. Not accepting any responsibility for the quality of our food. It was like an episode of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmare and their owners. I will not be returning. Not even for the decent tasting Alcappurias. Too bad, too. It's the only restaurant in the area offering food from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. We'll have to stick with the food trucks to get our fix. To end the conversation the owner/cook wished us luck in finding better food at another local Dominican/ Puerto Rican restaurant in the area. To which I kindly replied, "well you know very well there aren't any". She shrugged her shoulders and rolled her eyes..... So unfortunate! I shared this experience with the front manager before leaving. She was highly apologetic. I made the suggestion that if she would like for customers in the future to possibly return even after trying a few unsatisfactory dishes, then it would be in their best interest to keep the owner in the kitchen. read more

What do I do when I visit places with a more ethnically diverse cuisine selection? I have to try some of everything I can't find in Richmond! I had been hankering bacalaitos (salted codfish fritters) for quite some, and haven't been able to get it. I initially wanted a Cuban sandwich (always craving those), and when I saw they had bacalaitos on the menu I bumped my head and lost my mind. I had to have some!! Effective Immediately!! I had my friend take me to Mofongo's to possibly get a Cuban sandwich and bacalaito's. I changed my mind about the Cuban sandwich when I asked the greeter if they incorporate garlic aioli into the sandwich (this is I have always had it), and she responded no they can give me some on the side, I was like, "No I'm good". I requested the bacalaito's, which includes 2 fritters for $8. I asked for them to be crispy on the edges with chewiness in the middle (she clearly wasn't too familiar with the food), she responded, Crispy ok". I was hoping the seasoning and flavor would save the bacalaito's, even if they were crispy. Not Even Close!! I abhor, when food is not prepared with the typical recipe! These had to be the absolute worse bacalaito's I have ever had!!! I ruined a batch of keto bacalaito's that had better flavor (horrible texture). I was so glad I didn't waste my money on a Cuban sandwich as well ! The fritters were cooked as requested, but had no codfish flavor or pieces in them!!! I was so disappointed! For a place that advertises as a steak house, this place was extremely disappointing to me and my family when we wanted to try some place new. They only had burgers and simple Caribbean food in the menu... The false advertising is real! When we asked why they were advertising as a steak house in the name of they did not have any steak to show for they simply said "this isn't out full menu... we just opened recently."
