I've been coming to this place for years . I've moved out of Manassas so it has almost been 8 years since I've eaten here. And it is everything that I remembered and loved about it. I still recognized majority of the same staff that was working there. And the food was still on par with how it used to be. I wouldn't come here expecting a spectacular dining experience, but if you are looking for delicious, authentic el Salvadorian food at an amazing price this is your spot. Another first for me! A kinda seat yourself place. Elena assisted us on this visit and was there when we needed her. Bottled water was delivered with a plastic cup and ice. Mine had a floaty which was quickly remedied. The Carne Asada was a plentiful plate of food. The steak was large and nicely cooked with rice and slaw. The Pastel de Carne was tasty but was not delivered hot, just kinda warm so they seemed like it had been sitting a while. The pollo pupusos where hot and flavorful. The value for the money is definitely there if you're not looking for fancy. You will leave with a full belly and doggie bag and not break the bank. Not quite a whole in the wall but not quite casual dining either, as food is delivered on plates and paper plates with wax paper as well. Very yummy place. Helps if you speak Spanish but you will be ok if not. If ordering take out just go directly to the bar. If eating in just pick a table and they will come and serve you. We got 6 steak tacos and 1 chicken taco. Classic street tacos, cheap simple but yummy. Topped with cilantro, onion, avocado and cheese served on corn tortillas with a slightly spicy green sauce on the side. We also ordered two pupusas which were very yummy. I also ordered a horchata but was not a fan. I can't seem to find horchata like they served in the West. $18 for everything and we were both stuffed! I'd been wanting to try this place ever since I moved to Manassas; I finally talked my fiancé into coming with me! We ordered several different types of pupusas with a side of yuca and plantains. Overall the pupusas were okay; the ones with cheese were definitely better than those without. Their pupusas come with a side of cole slaw and salsa, but the salsa needed more heat. The pupusas were lacking in flavor also. The yuca was served cold and wasn't the crispy warm yuca I'm used to having, disappointment. The plantains though, oh man those plantains. Perfectly fried and caramelized to ultimate deliciousness. Stopped here On Friday night for a to go order. We were helped promptly at the counter and we looked at a menu to see what we wanted. Just FYI not many of the workers speak English so just try and use whatever Spanish you know or point on the menu so you can get what you would like. We ordered cheese and pork pupusas. We waited about ten minutes and then our order was ready. The pupusas were really hot and delicious. They also give an ample amount of red sauce which was awesome. Each pupusa was 2$ each. If you haven't had them before: they are pretty big so I'd say order 3-4 and you will be full. Will visit again in the future! read more

My family and I used to come here often for traditional salvi food. unfortunately in the past years it's gotten worse and worse. Food is still amazing as ever but try to order for more than 2 people and youre left with half assed orders and waiting for more than 40 minutes for 5 pupusas. Not only that but my mom's favorite food the nuegados used to be so good now its a 50/50 with subpar carmelized sugar and rancid chilate. Definitely won't be coming back to this location since we've had around 5 consecutive terrible experiences. Better to go to the Arlington location or the one in chirilagua. Went for lunch on a weekday... They were nearly packed (which is a good), but we sat ourselves quickly and without fuss. We were quickly greeted and checked out the menu. They have a nice assortment of El Salvadorian entrees and delights! Tried a couple of styles of papusas, tamale and yuca and all were really good. The yuca was very thick and I thought it would be very woody and hard, but it really wasn't, it was easy to eat and quite tasty. The papusas were really good and the chicken & cheese papusa was the best I"ve ever had. Slaws really tasted good too. Overall, the food was great. Service was very mediocre at best and venue is quite plain and basic. As long as all you care about is the food, this is the place to get your papusas! read more

Doña Azucena has five (5) locations. I believe four (4) in VA (Arlington, Springfield, Woodbridge, and Manassas) and (1) in MD (Silver Spring). The Manassas location is newer, and MUCH bigger than the one in Arlington (the only other location I've been to thus far), but they offer the same menu nonetheless. It's clean and full of tables that can accommodate big groups and families as well. Must-haves: - Pupusas for the obvious reasons -- My favorite is the chicharron con queso (pork and cheese). They also offer plain cheese, loroco (type of herb or flower), and revueltas (pork, cheese, and beans). And best of all, they come with a side of curtido or vinegary cabbage slaw and spicy dressing to drizzle over top. - Tacos - They offer steak, chicken, etc. I get the steak tacos and it comes with a side of jalapeño mojo or spicy green goodness =0). I love the fresh quesillo and fresh avocado slices they provide them with your tacos as accompaniments. See pictures. Doña Azucena also offers a full menu with appetizers, salads, combo platters, dessert, etc. Price: Bargain prices with both pupusas and tacos at $2 each. Overall, a great stop if you're in the mood for some authentic Salvadoran cuisine. Sidenote: Doña Azucena is definitely legit as far as authenticity and based on the clientele they bring in alone. During both my visits, I felt like I had to break out with my Spanish while I ordered. Eek, the pressure and embarrassment I feel in fear of sounding like an idiot with the minimal Spanish I know! I went here after noticing it when I was out that way, having not noticed it before. I went on a Wednesday afternoon, sometime around 1. I walked in and didn't really know what the deal was. There wasn't a hostess stand, and when I finally made eyes with a waitress it seemed like we just sat ourselves. It was just my 2 year old daughter and myself. The English of my waitress was extremely limited, so I used my 3 years of high school Spanish to order. I thought I'd stay, but ultimately decided to take them home. This really seemed to throw the waitress off. Ultimately I think you can place orders to go at the counter in the back - but there is no menu overhead or directions to do so, so I didn't know. I paid $17 for 10 pupusas and went about my way. So, awkward ordering experience aside, the food was really good. They're filling, moist and fresh. The table was dirty and our water was served in little baby plastic cups. Again bare bones folks; I didn't mind, I just wanted my food to be good. The service was spotty, not really a complaint, I just had to say "excuse me!" A few times to get my waitresses attention. Food: I ordered 2 chicken tacos, 1 lengua taco, 2 pupusas: 1 chicken and 1 pork, and the yuca. The tacos come with grated cheese, cilantro, onions, and fresh avocado, wrapped in 2 corn tortillas (so you know they're authentic). They were SO good! It was my 1st time having lengua and it tasted just like beef to me, I'd order it again. I had fun eating a little tongue. The pupusas were served w/ cole slaw and tomato sauce, but I had no idea it was for them, so instead I squeezed the lime on them and added the green sauce (insert fainting emoji here) & that flavor profile was everything I could have asked for. Onto the yuca...meh! They were cut really thick and served lukewarm-room temperature. I'm planning on cutting the leftovers smaller, throwing them in the oven and eating them w/ scrambled eggs in the morning. For all of that food I paid $12. Smh! Felt like I was stealing. Lol! I'm deducting a star because of service and this painful gas I now have from eating there. LOL! These are the best pupusas you could buy. My family usually gets huge orders from here at least once a month. We order cheese, been and cheese, revuelta, and locas. The revuelta pupusa (for non-Spanish speakers) is a pupusa with what is carnitas (chicharrón) and cheese and beans. The pupusa loca (non-Spanish) is a mixture of almost everything, they're so so good. I can't say anything about items on the menu that aren't pupusas but I can say that my mom adores the tamales de gallina. I haven't had it because I am not a fan of the texture, it has a slimy texture to it unlike Mexican tamales. The horchata is not the same as the Mexican kind, I'm not a huge fan of it because I have grown accustomed to the Mexican horchata. read more

Stick with the pupusas - they're always delicious and as close to authentic as you can get (I've had pupusas in El Salvador many times, I can vouch DA's are legit). Be wary if you order breakfast here on a weekend (they offer from open to 11a) as it tends to get a little expensive. A plate of eggs with chorizo scrambled into them costs $8.50, and comes with two sides. Any other sides are extra (up to $2.50). It can get pricey pretty quick. The eggs are scrambled with mixed vegetables (peppers, onions, tomatoes) - along with finely chopped chorizo. The chorizo that came with my eggs had a bit of a crunch to it (not sure if that was bone or...?) Plus, the beans are super runny. At least they give you a decent side of crema if you order that. In my opinion the quality is not worth the price (I get really turned off by any sign of bone in my food, and those watery beans... ugh). Like I said - stick with the pupusas. read more

Service is wonderful! Food is AMAZING! Cant complain really enjoyed the visit! Came at a perfect time as well (4:00pm) and it tends to get busy afterwords its (5:30pm) and its starting to get packed! One thing i didn't like but does not bother me at all is that refills aren't free or the cups they give you are not a decent size for the wonderful meal they give! My family and I came to this restaurant last Thursday for a family dinner. We have been there before without much incident. However, this past experience has made us question coming back ever again. That night we are our meal, and ordered food to take home for my 85 year of grandfather. He sat down to enjoy his favorite thing on the menu, a pupusa revuelta. Alarmingly not even half way through the pupsa, he found a SHARD OF GLASS in his mouth. We immediately told him to stop eating and looked to phone the restaurant. Unfortunately, at that time (9:55pm) they weren't picking up the phone. Understanding that they were near closing, we committed to calling the next day to share the incident with this restaurant. We called the next day to speak to a manager about finding the glass in his food and were told that the manager wasn't in to speak with us. Fast forward to two consecutive days, and two more attempts to speak to someone, we were STILL TOLD THAT THERE WASNT A MANAGER to speak to about what happened to my grandpa. Now, finding glass in my grandpa's food and the shock we felt could have been resolved by a simple conversation with management. Having worked in the food industry during my time at university I've witnessed and partaken in how to maneuver a sensitive situation with professionalism. This was not the case. I'm beyond disappointed with how this restaurant handled my family's situation, and even more so about being ignored. Whether this happened because of a lack of properly trained management, or just plain embarrassment, I felt the need to share my experience so that my grandfather's scare doesn't go unreported. read more

And now, for the pupusas! But before I begin, let me explain what a pupusa is. A pupusa basically is a fast dish, native to El Salvador, that is made of cornmeal. On the outside it looks like a pancake or an English Muffin. But on the inside, it is filled with meats, cheese, and/or beans. It's usually fried, and it can be quite greasy. So now that you know what a pupusa is, let's dive in. I got 3 of them. They were greasy, but man were they good! Very gooey, and plenty of chicken and cheese taste! They were also super hot! (No finger food kids), and allowed for an excellent time to taste and chew the food. I would just be careful with the grease. It was put in a basket and waxed paper, but still, too greasy a bit, so again, be careful. In conclusion, for the price I paid, I was satisfied enough, but lacking that over the top feel to make it feel memorable. I'd like to go back and order a tamale here to see how they fare, but based on the pupusas, I can say I would definitely like to return here again! read more
