The place has a lot of history boards, a small hike, a tiny park for kids to play, a dam/fall and obviously the I love ny sign inside the welcome center. One of the cutest rest stops ever! Super clean bathrooms (yes - this is super extra important esp when on the road). They have a little enclosed dog area where they can do their thing and also be free and run for a little. There's also a kids playground area and honestly the whole area is beautiful to stop, picnic, enjoy the fell leaves ***ahem ahem minus the allergies*** and enjoy the beautiful park. There's a bridge, but the sign said it wasn't. DAM, that's not a bridge haha. Also, the inside rest stop area has a coffee area and vending machines for snacks - other than that - that's all. 10 out of 10, would stop here! read more

This place was something we stumbled on as a "rest stop" driving through NY and boy am I glad we did. What an amazing park and welcome center. I could have spent a nice leisurely lunch here. The view of the locks, the water so still and beautiful, the walkway with historical information, play area for kids and vending machines with special NY treats and items was great. This is a wonderful place to stop with children and pets. Or, adults who need to use the restroom, or grab a bite and an awesome cup of coffee. They have a fabulous coffee machine that makes more than just coffee. My cappuccino was delicious! They also have vending machine if you want a little snack. It's a wonderful halfway pick up spot for getting the grandkids. They love it! Everything is always so clean and the people are so nice. As far as the review goes with the two stars rating because the bathrooms were closed, that's was an unfortunate happenstance. It just wasn't your lucky day to stop, on the same day, it wasn't their lucky day to have a plumbing issue. Life happens. So, don't let that review stop you from stopping at this five star restaurant area. read more

What a cute rest stop. Would be a five star stop if there were more food options. Came here on a road trip and the bathrooms are clean. There is no food stations but there are vending machines and a small coffee shop. The inside of the rest stop is clean and filled with history of the area. The outside is well kept with a small kids park, a grassy area, and a scenic view for stopping and stretching your legs. Very cool place to stop. read more

Really nice welcome area, with beautiful views of the Mohawk River and surrounding scenery. There's a playground and electric car charges. There's plenty of green space and benches to picnic. There's also informative signs outside, and an interactive exhibit inside. Bathrooms are clean. Most of the food they sell is made in NY state. The only downside is that the food options are limited and everything is in a vending machine. However the wraps and sandwiches are made on-site so they're fresh. Wraps go for about $10, sandwiches about $5. There's no gasoline here. Good spot to take a break and try something NY made, and great if you have kids because the playground looked awesome! read more

Traveling home from the Tulip festival in Albany we were pleasantly surprised by this rest area. Clean bathrooms, friendly attendant selling coffee, and nice walking area with a couple of picture opportunities is what we found. There is also a dog walking area and plenty of history to read about, so if you need to stop while traveling westbound on I90 between Albany and Syracuse definitely stop as it's a nice break. read more

One of the most breath taking rest stops ever. I wish I lived closer to be able to visit this gorgeous place. So peaceful as we watched the train go by and took in the water, flowers and scenery. The fenced in area for dogs was a nice touch. Double gated so pups won't run away but can be free to frolic. Matt W. did an excellent job of reviewing this multi-purpose rest stop along the NYS Thruway, interstate I-90. It's a mini-full-service stop with some vending machines and restrooms, but also much more. Located at Lock 13 of the Erie Canal, you can watch the lock in operation if you are lucky enough to have a boat passing through. There are plenty of informational and historical plaques informing you of the canal's operation and its significance to not only New York, but also to those shipping or traveling to and from States west of NY in the early years of our country. There is a play area for children that has a special cushioned ground surface that helps to absorb shock in case of a fall. It's really neat even for adults to walk on. A separate walking trail seems to be paved with a combination of small pebbles and pieces of rubber. There is a patio of fame with the names of famous people from the area inlayed among the paving stones, including Annette Funicello, Kurt Douglas, and Ray Tomlinson. Who was Ray Tomlinson? He was born in Amsterdam, NY - Google his name to find out. The only thing about this entire facility that has me baffled is why it doesn't have auto-flush toilets and urinals in the restrooms. They put solar collectors on the roof, so they obviously were thinking about conservation and energy efficiency. Otherwise, it really should be added to your bucket list, especially if you have the slightest reason to travel WEST between exits 28 and 29 on the Thruway, I-90. Note that I emphasized that it is only accessible while traveling in a westerly direction. read more

Great place to stop going west on the NYS Thruway. This is a new and new kind of stop/rest area along the Thruway. The Welcome Center has restrooms, vending machines w/ NYS products, maps, brass plaques honoring famous people from the Mohawk Valley , can walk right to the operating lock on the river, outdoor climbing park for kids (canal boats, mules, ships, etc - good photo op), dog park, historical walk w/ info panels throughout, and an electric car recharging station. A great alternative to the big, busy car/truck stops. This one is 50 miles west of Albany, NY, between Exits 28 and 29. I repeat great place for parents to let the kiddos get the wiggles out on those long car trips. We visited here Tue 6/04/18. p.s. There is also a Welcome Center sited near the old Erie Canal near the Port Byron exit for eastbound travelers on the NYS Tway I-90. read more

The king of rest areas, not a travel service plaza but a combined tourist information center, historical park, and riverside waypoint by Lock 13 of the Erie Canal. It's between exits 28 and 29, westbound only, at milepost 187. There's no gas or restaurant service but despite this (or maybe because of it) it's the nicest rest area I've ever been to and, quite seriously, worth a day trip just to see it. Amenities: - two dog runs - free Taste of NY coffee (automated espresso machine for a small fee) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 365 days a year - an Erie Canal-themed playground that has to be seen; cool custom versions of canal boats, loading areas, and cargo to play on in rubberized format - a nice hiking trail with historical interpretation about the history of the Erie Canal and the Mohawk Valley - a modern tourist information center, with some touchscreen exhibits and a small historical display, and lots of nice café seating, including table shaded and in the sun on a veranda to the rear overlooking the river; there's also a neat in-floor map - very nice and clean modern restrooms in the welcome center - nice picnic tables dotted around - Lock 13 on the Erie Canal, right in the service area, so in-season you can watch boats lock through - electrical vehicle charging stations - an automated DMV service machine, where you can get a copy of your driving record or renew vehicle registrations and perform some other DMV business 24/7 - kind of unique "Taste of New York" vending machines, featuring products ranging from Maple syrup and drinkable yogurt to native pepitas and apple cider! There's four of them dotted around. It's so pleasant it's worth planning an itinerary around, especially in the warm weather months. read more

There are three EV chargers out front and plenty of parking for cars, trucks, and RVs. This is a cool and somewhat unique rest area along I-90, in the westbound direction. It doesn't have your traditional set of businesses and fast food vendors, but it does have a TasteNY area, where you can get freshly prepared (that day) sandwiches out of vending machines. These sandwiches are made using local ingredients, and they're very tasty. However, the day we were there, the vending machines were partially busted. They weren't taking credit cards, only cash. That doesn't sound like that big of a deal, except when you realize that the machines only take $1 bills or change. And the sandwiches cost $9-10. We lucked out and managed to get change for a $20 from one of the staff, but this was a big annoyance in general. Other than that annoyance, this place is pretty neat. There's a nice park with walking paths that lead over by Lock 13 on the Erie Canal. There's also a playground for the kids, and even an off-leash dog park, which was a really nice touch. It's one of the nicest rest areas along the Thruway, hands down. The restrooms are even nicer than normal. read more

This maybe one of the fancier rest stops I've been to. Looks like one of those modern historical buildings on the outside and when you walk in the left side displays historical artifacts and a historical map displayed on the ground. One of the cleanest rest stops I've been too, very well maintained. Interactive games for kids and an outside playground. Bathrooms are spotless and well kept. I'm not quite sure if there are people who are working inside as it was completely empty but we also stopped during a snow storm. Mainly vending machines, no real convenient store. Okay it might be weird to review an I-90 rest stop, but this is seriously the nicest facility I have ever been to. We pulled off on a whim on our way home from Albany and were so impressed from the moment we drove up. There is a beautiful little playground for the kids with a view of the Mohawk River. The building is open, bright and very clean and features a little cafe counter and TasteNY vending machines (and they had free samples when we were there!) There are helpful information kiosks and a gigantic flatscreen featuring interesting tourist attractions in NY. I would actually consider making this a must-stop location on future trips. read more

I travel a good amount of time and I have been to hundreds of rest areas, my favorite place to travel is Ohio, they have very nice facilities across the state and they look like mini-malls with dog areas, break rooms, food etc... I just finished a trip to central Illinois and back (NH) and came across this on my way out. This was more like a mini-state park or campground. It has to be the best rest area I have ever been to. First, there was a train passing which just pushed it right over the top. The inside is very nice and has a snack bar during the day and a great variety of vending with local offerings, not your run of the mill vending machines. There is also a nice dog area and a very nice playground for kids. The view is beautiful and I even saw what I believe was a small boat launch area on the Mohawk River. There were definitely small boats (kayak & canoe) sitting there but I did not go close enough because I was only there for about ten minutes. The bathrooms are very clean. It was a beautiful picturesque spot. I wish they were all this nice. read more

We were traveling to Syracuse from Hartford with 3 kids. I said to my wife "more rest stops should have playgrounds". Three minutes later we pull off for a rest here and sure enough there is a playground here. I can echo what others say...this place is wonderful. Between the views of the river, the walking trail, the spotless buildings and the playground we could have spent hours there. Two trains went by across the river while we were there. It was one of the most enjoyable half hours of my life. I even bought some NY cheese from a vending machine inside that was delicious. If you are looking for a place to stop on I-90 definitely stop here, especially if you have kids. read more

Vending machines with local NY state products, a variety of sandwiches, drinks, snacks, and desserts. Or bring your own lunch and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Charging stations for electric vehicles. Usually at the thruway travel centers we're in and out. Too noisy and crowded, and not the cleanest.
