    Don't look down!

We chose to do the mule ride down to Kalaupapa because my bf has some knee issues. This was something we had really wanted to do. I booked online for the ride/tour/lunch & it was worth every penny. The mules seemed well cared for and pretty much know the drill. If you have a fear of heights, this may not be for you. In some sections the trail is pretty narrow & I got uneasy a couple times, but in the end, there was nothing to really worry about. The views are spectacular & our guides were friendly & helped keep the pack moving along. The tour of Kalaupapa & lunch was amazing. So, so glad we did this. You won't regret it, just don't focus on looking down!!!

This was our top favorite thing to do on Molokai! It is definitely a once in a lifetime experience! My husband and I chose to ride the mules vs hiking or flying and I'm happy with that choice. If you do hike down keep in mind it is the same trail the mules climb up and down(lots of poop!) Once everyone checks in you get a quick lesson on how to ride and then you're paired with your mule. Mine was Smokey who was a little sassy but cute as all out. The mules really no help going up or down so if you're hesitant no need to be! Once you get to the bottom, you'll learn so much about the colony! When we go back to Molokai, I can't wait to do it again! Thanks JR and team for an unforgettable experience!

This was a wonderful experience for me and my family. My dad hiked and my husband and mom and I muled down. Our day was very peaceful, and educational. I'm so glad we were able to do this together!

Amazing experience. It was very rustic and authentic... True to the beautiful spirit that is Molokai. It's a family run business with the son and grandson of the late Buzzy Sproat continuing his legacy and aloha. The staff truly work hard to make the adventure fun and memorable. The mules are phenomenally adept to the trail and they work their butt off to get you down and back up the 20+ switchbacks safe and sound. These animals are gentle, smart, and very strong. The views, the history of Kalaupapa and Kalawao, and the wonderful people you meet along the way definitely leaves its mark on your soul! I highly recommend locals of Hawaii to experience this adventure and see a side of our home, Hawaii, that still resonates in the old, traditional ways that we should always respect and love. Plenty aloha to the Sproat 'ohana for taking us on a completely memorable trek. I will be back!!

What a great day! The ALOHA spirit of the staff, the views, the magnificent mules truly made for a wonderful experience. JR does an excellent job running the show! Each person on our ride was paired with the appropriate mule, and go love for Molokai and the history made the ride down very interesting. It is a bit scary, but the mules do most of the work.

This tour was amazing. I booked it online and decided to just do a day trip. I flew in early in the morning and grabbed a cab and flew out the same day. The people who run it are very professional and know what they are doing. We started a bit later than expected but that's because it was island time. We all had to sign a waiver then we were paired with our mule we had a few paniolos with us and once we started the miles seemed to know their job. They tell you to lean back on the way down and lean forward on the way up. I kept petting my mule so he knew I appreciated all the hard work he was doing. The trail is pretty covered and it's a bunch of switch backs. Once you are level you go by one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. They take you to a stopping point where you meet with a tour bus that takes you on the rest of your tour. The mules are cared for by the paniolos during this time. Once that tour is complete you come back and get on the same mule. They call out the mule names instead of passenger names, so make sure you remember. Then you are going back up the trail to where you started. I am so glad I did this tour because I don't think it will be around forever. I learned so much doing the St. Damien tour and the mule ride was an added bonus! If you get the chance this is the way to go to get to Kalaupapa.

Visiting Kalaupapa had been on my bucket list for years since moving to Hawaii (yeah, not many…read morepeople ask for a trip to a former leper colony for their birthday - I'm that girl). Back in 1995, I happened to be at the beatification ceremony in Belgium for Pater Damien. I've been in a 20+ year orbit of him since. I worked downtown next to the church in which he was ordained. Finally, I was able to visit Kalaupapa myself. My book club recently read Molokai by Alan Brennart, a novel chronicling the separation of a girl from her family on Oahu and her long isolation on the peninsula throughout much of the 20th century. Next thing we know, we've chartered a flight and booked a tour! Our tour was $60 and included our permit. As I mentioned in my review of the national historic park itself, you really have to do some work BEFORE you come. You can't expect to show up and be told the entire story of what happened here in a few hours and understand it. Nor will you really feel the mana of this place. Take the time to do some research and reading ahead of time and you will have a much richer experience. That said, Richard and Brian and the sisters of St. Francis did an excellent job illuminating some of the history of the peninsula and the significance of some of the buildings left. We did not get to meet Gloria, the owner of the tour company and Fuesaina's bar since her daughter had just come in that morning for a visit. Richard has been living here for two decades and has done seemingly everything - from minister at one of the churches to physical restoration of the buildings. Brian has only been here for two years, and his specialty is natural history and he works with restoring native plant species; it was nice to have that perspective, too, which we wouldn't have otherwise had with a smaller group. They ping-pong-ed us with insight into ancient times, early days of the isolation of Hansen's disease patients, more recent history, and current life on the peninsula. Our group (our book club 11, plus another six) was so large that Brian had to be recruited to drive a second vehicle, but Richard delivered information at the stops. Since his own life is so woven into that of the community, it never felt scripted, as guided tours so often do. They picked us up at the airport. We began at the pier, where an incoming patient would have arrived. We saw the houses where volunteers can stay now, but in the past, residents and visitors would have spent time with each other in those buildings, continually separated by fencing or numerous other physical barriers. We saw inside the Social Hall, Baldwin Home, St Philomena's, Siloama, St. Elizabeth's, Kanaana Hou, and the beautiful view of the cliffs at Makawao. This is still a community of patient residents, though their numbers are dwindling. We didn't get a chance to meet any of them, though we did see some out and about, and Richard and Brian gave us a glimpse into some of their personalities. As it is still a community, the tour must be respectful of those residents, which is why permits are required, you are not allowed in as an outsider unless on a tour, work group, or as an invited guest of a resident. Keep in mind when booking a tour that the company is owned by a patient in her 80s (any business operating in Kalaupapa must be owned by a resident) and it's any guess what may happen to the tours or the park once the last of these residents pass on. You also must be sponsored at all times (even park service employees are subject to this their first six months), so there is no wandering freely about the community. The tour gave us a good amount of time at each stop to see, read, and ask questions. An easily-recommended experience, but also not for everyone.

I went to Molokai in February 2024 and I was looking to do both of the aforementioned tours, though I could not do the Molokai Forest Reserve that day because of bad weather and muddy conditions and also because I was the only one signed up that day, so thankfully I opted for the refund in those circumstances. However, I was able to go on the Anupuka Dune & Mokio Preserve tour the following day because weather conditions were more favorable, though our tour guide Ally came across some really muddy conditions at times when driving the 4x4 van to and from the preserve in West Molokai. Overall, Ally did such a wonderful and fine job of navigating our group and explaining the history behind the preserve as well as allowing us to get off and explore the region and capture lots of photos and memories. We even stopped at Pono O Hale Beach and Halena Beach towards the end of the day to explore and/or relax for an hour! Anyways, I hope to be back soon to do the Molokai Forest Reserve tour with this organization (I'm told the summer months tend to be better times to do this).

You can feel the land when you arrive. The history itself is long and there are only a handful of its original occupants still living here so stop by and say hello! Residents and park workers (who maintain the history) are all friendly! Small souvenir shop, goods shop, but mostly everything you need should be brought with you. Accomodities are scarce but thats the appeal, to spend time in mostly untouched lands and waters. The stars shine bright as the skies are free from city lights and the water is crystal clear, saw monk seals on the shore sleeping. Its also quiet so the group you go with should be a good one -- Lifelong friendships could be formed out there. The church is beautiful and the pier is fun to jump off of. Again, its very humbling to come here and immerse yourself. Its a break from the civilization of the other outer islands. I had a wonderful time here and the memories made there are precious and worth more than most things. Spent 10 days here on a mission trip so I got a chance to know all the locals, play volleyball in their main park area, and attend church in the chapel. Book a trip down there if you can!

Getting a tour set up is a bit of a "thing" - almost easiest to just go visit Walter at his house at milestone 14. We had to come back a few times due to weather conditions and you don't get the clearest of instructions - "wade through the river by the first coconut tree past milestone 26", but we figured it out. His boat is anchored in the Halawa bay, at the end of the Kamehamea V Hwy. You park your car past the park and cross the river to meet him at his boat in the morning. The river gets about to your waste. Wear swim gear and ideally some kind of grippy water shoe that you're able to swim with. You will get soaked and sunburnt. Kids should be at least 12 or so to go on this trip. Seas can get a bit rough. The trip is beyond spectacular. We went into a cave with the boat, birds flying above our heads. We jumped from a rock in a bay we passed and went under a waterfall. It's pricey but absolutely worth it. Once in a lifetime experience. Thanks to Walter and his grandsons!!!
