I ordered off of Snackpass and came early so they told me to sit down and offered me chai tea which tasted as authentic as it gets. This small, home-style cooking restaurant is an absolute gem in Berkeley. It is run by the nicest, and hardest-working family in the world, and they always provide the most heart-warming, wholesome food. The curries and momos are delicious, and even if you are not familiar with the Himalayan food background, they make you feel like you're at home. Let me start with its buffet menu which is served at noon only. You can get a lot of food if you are skilled at packing it in a tiny plastic to-go container. Their chickens are so delicious and their chicken tikka masala sauce is the bomb! It is also worth mentioning that you can have the best eating experience by dipping your naan into the chicken tikka masala sauce. Oh man, it's making me hungry just thinking about it. When I go here at night, I always get chicken biryani. It tastes good and the portion size is huge. It might be a little pricey but it's big enough to last for two meals, in my opinion. Really solid place, and pretty inexpensive too. I got the saag paneer and an order of samosas, and the whole thing came out to be about ten bucks. The sag paneer was really flavorful and didn't have any cream, which is a huge plus. The samosas were low on the salt, which was also a plus for me. The staff was super nice. I got the chicken tikka masala which was incredibly salty. I'm usually not too picky with my food and if it's not that great, I will still usually finish it because I don't like to waste food. But plate was so incredibly salty, it was unbearable to eat.... Moreover, the sauce was very creamy and not full of spice as it should be. And finally, the rice was just normal rice, as opposed to basamati rice, which is the norm in Indian cuisine. However, with the above being said, I guess I got what I paid for. The dish only cost ~$6. And, you get free naan if you check into the establishment on FB or Instagram (or in my case, the cashier let me do Yelp). The naan was very good though. My friend and I were walking around in that area looking for food, when the sign "Momo Masala" caught our eyes. I am from Nepal, and making/eating momos (Nepalese/Tibetan version of pot-stickers) are our national obsession. So, we were pretty excited to go and see what they had to offer. It is a tiny place, and we were greeted by a lovely lady at the counter. She was very sweet, and even came to chat with us for a little bit. We ordered two plates of chicken momos (7.95/ plate, I think) and some fried Tibetan noodles. The lady told us that momos usually takes 15-20 minutes to make, so don't order them if you're running low on time. When we got the fried noodles, at first I thought it was okay. It didn't impress me too much, but as I started eating them the taste reminded me of the fried noodles I used to have when I was growing up in Nepal. So, I wouldn't say it was amazing, but it tasted like home. So, I loved it anyways. It tasted way better with the spicy sauce they give you on the side. The mo mos were pretty good, but as the previews reviewer has implied, it does seem like they are a bit careful about how much spice goes into their food. It wasn't as flavorful as I probably would have wanted to, but when we dipped it in the spicy sauce and it tasted delicious. I would have to try and order it spicy next time and see how it goes. The lady told us about the buffet, and I am most definitely going to be back for it. Came here for lunch. The buffet seemed decent enough to try. So i tried. Worst lunch in months ! I am an Indian from India, and i take my food very seriously. I tried small portions of all of the dishes present at the Buffet. - Tandoori Chicken - Too much fake red coloring, undercooked, cold.When i asked to get a better piece of chicken, then i was served the same after being microwaved. When i said that the chicken seemed like it was not fresh and asked if i could have a fresh food then i was told that they don't have fresh and that they make chicken in the morning and leave it for the buffet. I was shocked and i asked if i could just return it. The chef came out and argued with me that the chicken is fine and that something is wrong with me. I could do nothing but just leave the matter. - Rest of the food - No where authentic indian, generally cold with lot of coloring. Let me start by saying that I'm a big fan of Indian food (though I myself am not Indian), and cook it regularly at home. I've eaten in many Indian restaurants, and have visited India as well. In my opinion, Momo Masala is fantastic. The food is very flavorful and always fresh (the turnover for their buffet is high). I'm in here 3 days a week, it would actually be 5 days a week but I figure I should try and mix up my diet a bit :-) The owners are always friendly and accommodating. I usually get the lunch buffet, which at $7.63 including tax is awesome (note "buffet" here means you can fill your plate only once, but as much as you want that one time, and it's not a small plate). I find that usually when I stray from this place for lunch and try another restaurant, I'm quite disappointed wherever else I go. In my experience, I've found that there are many Indian restaurants out there where the flavor of the dishes is mediocre at best, especially when it comes to buffets. Momo Masala is definitely not one of them. Finally, do keep in mind this is a smaller place (with seating of course), it's not a big fancy restaurant, and as a result the food really tastes homemade, which is the way I prefer it! Actually, that wasn't my final point, this is: Try the mango lassi, it's great! Not oversweet like most Indian restaurants I've tried. read more

The best place for hot homemade Indian food in and around Berkeley! The Chicken Momos are the best that I've had in the US, especially with the spicy red sauce. The Chicken Platter is my favorite with homemade yellow dal, vegetables/rajma, papad, and spicy chicken curry. The lady who owns the shop is a lovely Nepali woman who always takes care of the customers by giving them extra momos, and curry without charging them and also creates special spicy dishes for them. The Momo ethnic eats is by far one of my favorite place to eat around campus. The food is delicious and they have good options for everyone. I personally enjoy the thali which is the combination platter of rice, yellow lentil, curry of choice, papadum and a well pickled mix of fruits and vegetables on the side. Besides that, the best part is the hospitality provided by the staff here. They are unconditionally friendly and service is by far the best I've seen compared to a lot of locations in Berkeley. I've been here at least once a week, every week for the past few months. Momo Masala isn't the best Indian place in Berkeley, but it's a solid option if you're limited to the area around Euclid and Hearst. If you sit down to eat, you can get free chai, which I really like. On Wednesdays, they offer 10 pieces of momo for only $5. Their chicken momo is great, but you have to eat it quickly, otherwise the skin cools down and becomes tough. I used to order their lunch special almost every time I came here. They offer a buffet-style lunch from 11-3 on weekdays. There is always a chicken dish, but it usually has bones. The buffet also includes something bread-based - bhatoray, naan, or sometimes a Tibetan bread called tingmo. They also provide rice and dal makhani. But they started charging customers based on the weight of the food, which made the lunch special too expensive for me, so I started exploring some of the other items on their menu. Their other dishes come with a small bowl of rice. From my favorite to least favorite, these are: Chicken korma: slightly creamy texture, chicken goes very well with the curry. This is listed in their menu, but not on the board above the cash register. Lamb korma: good, very similar to the chicken korma. But the lamb is a bit tough and doesn't mix as well with the curry. This is also not listed above the cash register. Saag paneer: thick and flavorful, with a couple of large pieces of paneer buried inside. Chicken curry: pretty good, but I usually prefer the chicken korma. Lamb curry, lamb vindaloo: lamb is too tough. Not that great (and I usually love lamb, too). Chicken tikka masala: way too creamy. It actually has sort of a cheesy taste, which I found surprising. The chicken korma is similar to this, but much less creamy. read more

I tried the pay-by-the-weight buffet, which was a terrible deal. Over $10 for two small sides, one medium helping of chicken curry, and two small pieces of puffy fried bread! (I didn't even get rice because it was just normal short-grain rice, and because--c'mon!, seriously?!--$5 per pound for steamed rice?!) As I told the cashier after he charged me, I could go across campus to University Ave and get all-you-can-eat buffet for less, with more options, REAL basmathi rice, and--as it turns out--much better-tasting food. The veggies and bread were okay, but the chana (chickpeas) were dry, the chicken curry was bland and full of tiny neckbones that I was picking out of my teeth for an hour after lunch. Fool me once... I ordered the lamb tikka masala. Not only was it greasy, but it was basically a light creamy sauce with a few hard square chunks of meat. I didn't expect it to be the best, but this had not one piece of onion or garlic or anything. Just square chunks and a greasy, creamy sauce. Served with white rice (yawn). The samosas were passable. Just moved to the area, and giving everything a chance. I'll never come here again. read more

Service good but OH MAH GOD the food was so incredibly salty I could feel my blood pressure raising with the first bite. I will usually eat everything and anything especially when it's chicken tikka masala but I could feel the thickness of the salt precipitating out of the curry.
