The waitress was very friendly and welcoming, warmly walking us through some of the restaurant's bestsellers through small conversation. We both ended up getting the butter chicken anyway ($20), and *wow,* the actual dish ended up being even more delicious than expected. As pictured, it comes with a generous side of rice and a little bit of potato, which complements the sweet and buttery chicken perfectly. The sauce is the soul of the dish, and it was so good I ended up taking the sauce home despite finishing the chicken and rice, because I wanted to savor every last drop of it! The service was great when I came here! The woman at the counter was friendly and was quick to offer her opinions on what I should get, but I stuck to my go-to order: Chicken Tikka Masala. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice and homey. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their plate. Personally, I was not impressed. Not only did the dish seem bland in look, as it was an undersaturated version of the Tikka Masala back home, but it was also lacking in the spices that would usually make this dish flavorful and outstanding. The heavy cream they poured on top also took away from any of the flavors that could have been taken away from the dish. All around, not a good dish and not worth the money spent. This was my first visit here to Momo Masala and being an avid lover of Momo I have high expectations and the flavors of all the food were perfect and beat my expectations by miles! The momo were fresh and so delicious as well as the chicken chow mein and the butter chicken. The owner asked me and my gf when we first walked in if we were vegetarian or meat eaters and I've never felt more validated as a customer! The flavors were on point and the veggies were fresh and the owner was explaining some menu items to us and I felt more knowledgeable about my choices after she had finished; the atmosphere is small but cozy and the owner works so hard every day to provide fresh and delicious food. If you are on the Euclid side of Cal Berkeley campus check out this establishment trust me you won't be disappointed! I decided to venture up to the north side of campus to give this place a try, and ordered in person at the restaurant (they are on Snackpass, though, if you want to order ahead for pickup). I got paneer chili because I'm a huge paneer fan, and then went to wait at some other benches because they had projected an 18 minute wait. But one of the workers (probably an owner) actually went looking for me since I didn't come back in a timely fashion, so I appreciated they actually went to extra effort to make sure I got my order. It does have real chilis which are actually way beyond my very sad level of spice tolerance, so that made it a bit harder to eat the parts that had chili seeds. There's also bell peppers and a large amount of white rice, though, and I did enjoy the flavoring and the paneer overall. read more

Momo Masalas definitively (and I do not say this lightly) has my hand in marriage. Nestled in a small, cozy corner of Northside Berkeley Campus, this restaurant has been singlehandedly airlifting me through my college education since I first happened upon it in Fall 2020. I am writing this review in hopes that some of you will come and give this small, family-owned restaurant some much-needed love because I have absolutely no complaints about this place. The customer service is amazing, and the owner Khendu and the rest of the staff have always been super friendly and welcoming to me and my friends whenever we stop by. The home-style Indian food is both affordable and delicious -- I've tried the samosas as well as the chicken/lamb curry but I have to recommend the chili paneer. The spices and seasoning were fantastic, and an excellent meal especially during the colder months (along with a warm cup of chai to go with it). Logistically the parking is relatively accommodating since there is street parking on both Hearst and Ridge Road, and it's super easy to hop in and out especially if you order to-go. I sincerely hope that more people are willing to give this place a shot because it's one of my best discoveries since coming to Berkeley. read more

I placed my order for takeout online and my order was hot and ready right on time. Service was friendly when I picked up too! Their veggie momos were flavorful and delicious. Since the name of this place is MoMo, I decided to try the momos, a type of dumpling. For $10, I got 10 chicken momos which is a pretty reasonable price. However, I was disappointed by the quality of the them. The filling had a nice flavor. It was meaty and savory and went well with the brightness of the tomato chutney that it came with. The tomato chutney was super fresh tasting and was really good. What ruined the momos was the wrapping. The wrapping was hard and rubbery on the outside, and a bit soggy on the inside. Instead of coming here for momos, I would probably just go to a Chinese restaurant and get dumplings because I couldn't really tell a difference between momos and Chinese dumplings. Everyone else that I saw eating here got curries instead on the momos, so I'm probably going to try the curry the next time I come here. read more

This is one of the most hidden gems on Northside. It's hidden away in a food alley but it's a great place to visit. The service was friendly and the workers automatically made me feel welcomed and at home. They had some of the best food I've had in awhile. I also tried their chai tea which was delicious. There is plenty of outdoor seating but if you do sit outside, the place has a quiet peaceful vibe to it. (See picture attached). This was a couple of my peers and my go-to spot in grad school. It's a down to earth family owned restaurant (the mom is usually the host, the dad is the cook, and the daughter sometimes help out). They are very hospital and will treat you like you're their guest to their house. The food is different from everything else in the area because it has a home-made and genuine feel. I once came before opening, and started leaving when I realized it was close. The owner saw me, and told me to come in and tell her what I wanted. I asked for my favorite - samosas. She hosted me and served up the best samosas I've had. My other favorite recipe is their tika masala chicken. I have not yet, after 2 years of searching, find a better tika masala mix. This is a solid budget lunch spot for undergraduates and graduate students alike. A friend and I popped in here during lunch rush (~12:15 pm) and they ran out of fresh momo's so we opted for the chicken plates. (Momo's, they said, would be ready in 10 minutes since fresh ones were still being steamed.) For a little over $10 you can get a whole plate of chicken (ask for half chicken curry, half chicken tikka masala), rice, and dal in under a minute. The flavoring was on the slightly blander side, but no real complaints there given the budget. Chicken curry was very tender and cooked with dark meat; the chicken tikka masala was very buttery and cooked with breast meat. The white rice is on the mushy side and almost resembled sticky rice to me. I also asked to taste the vegetarian option (chickpea and some kind of tuscan kale, it seemed), and it was yummy but not too memorable. Khendu is the name of the owner -- she was very sweet and attentive to us, even offering us some delicious chai after we had paid and sat down. So nice of her! I would gladly recommend Momo Masalas to students and professionals alike. Come here for a filling lunch in a clean environment with friendly, mom-and-pop service. read more

This is my absolute favorite place to eat. My go-to dish is the Chicken Tikka Masala, and it's always top-tier. I heard about it when I was asking around for food recs close to campus, and I have never looked back. It is absolutely some of the best Himalayan/Nepalese food I have e v e r had. The service is always impeccable as well! Khendu (store owner) is the kindest woman you will ever meet. I will order on snackpass usually, and if I stop in way before the food is supposed to be done and it's not super busy, they'll make it faster and bring it out. Khendu has an eye for faces and will make you feel so at home. It's a really cute restaurant, definitely small but there's an amazing outdoor eating area that Momo Masalas shares with a few other restaurants, and the indoor eating area is cozy and cared for. It is my greatest regret to say that I didn't enjoy the Momos. I came in super hungry and really wanted momos. One can reasonably assume that beef momos cannot go wrong especially when there is a Tibetan/Nepalese chef that makes it. But I was never more wrong. The beef used for the filling was PINK in color, had a sour and gamy taste as well. The meat/filling is the essence of a Momo, and once you have a cheap meat that is not of quality, then your only chance of saving the food is to have exceptional seasonings for the marination. Sadly, it didn't come through at all on the beef Momo. The beef was sour and did not have enough seasoning or soup. I couldn't cover momo with enough sauce to cover the bad taste. So I'm really really surprised! My first thought was that I came on a bad day. But even on a bad day, I don't think you can go this wrong with beef Momo. The chicken momo on the other hand had Indian spices, which I really don't like and think is an abomination to Momo, but tasted far better than the beef Momo. This came as a surprise to me, but the chicken momo had soup to slurp on and so it became the only saving grace. Apart from the momos, the service is great. The Tibetan gentlelady is really sweet and courteous. I really liked how she was engaging and humble with the customers. To anyone wondering about the 5 star given my review, I give it with full disclosure that it is a very biased one as I don't intend to ruin the algorithm for a small restaurant run by Tibetans or people from the Himalaya. I just think people can skip on the beef momo in this spot, because there are better momos in Berkeley. The Indian food looked delicious, so I might try that the next time. read more
