Hmmm... dive? People want to be known as this... and it might deserve it, but only in the most positive of context. There is a bar, a pool table. Digital Jukebox on the wall. There is an (pardon me) incredibly sexy suicide gal (no offense if that seems like I am typecasting) who's name starts with an "A" I think... she is witty, affable, kind and likes crosswords, with a noticeably absent "hey fuck you" attitude we get with so many hipster types in SF. She is not a hipster, as she is not trying to *be* something. She just is... the hard drinking, possibly chain smoking (but they are like $7 a pack), crossword doing barkeep. Then... there's Phil. Sure I might like to chat about his attitude regarding Somalia pirates being awesome, but frankly this guy is a CLASS ACT. I have rarely met someone like him in the service industry, cheap divey button down and silly tie not withstanding. Frankly.. silly is too strong a word anyway... he looked good. I heard another lady next to me suggest that as fact, so whom am I to judge? From 5 star hotels down to the sub-basement, rotting floorboard shanty shack bar... I have rarely seen someone that is so earnestly eager to remember EVERY SINGLE PATRON'S NAME, as Phil was. Seriously.... the guy did that whole, "hey, what's your name" while repeating what you told him and shaking your hand. I walked in from a local hotel, randomly, and I got the same treatment as the most drunken of locals. I have worked in the service industry for over two decades now (including illegal peanut restocking at bars when I was 9)... I cannot remember the last time, even the best of high end world class barkeeps, shook my hand and asked me my name so they could remember it. On top of that... they apparently have a back patio that I didn't visit because my vice would have had me reeking of nicotine and hunkered down for more hours than I would have liked. I haven't smoked in YEARS.... year upon year... but I am still brainwashed by movies like Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany's. It's still cool, I still like it, but I just can't fathom the taste anymore. Or the rotten, putrid long term smell. so. I have rambled. We have been frequenting Momo's for a couple of weeks now but tonight is going to stay in the records. We entered in the bar and my friend gently take out his jacket and went to the restroom. The server apparently new step up right away on his way back to the table and ask him RUDELY: I need your ID! (Ok let's take a notch down homie, it's just a check, don't need to be rude!) Then, he's coming to the table and smack the glass on the table at the same time he wants to clean the table... (Really?!) Last but not least, we are basically lighting off the candle and the same waiter comes at the table and ask us to stop those childish games and he's suggesting us next time to avoid to come to Momo's if we want to do that! We really liked this place. There's plenty of different seating areas to kick it. They've got a daily HH which is always a plus including $2 PBR if you're feeling classy. I know what you're thinking, "5 stars, really?!" Seriously, I loved this bar. My girlfriends and I went to Portland for the weekend to party, and a local recommended Momo's. We ended up there 3 times in 24 hours! The bartenders were attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere was a happy, laid back vibe. Great music and they have late night munchies. There's a patio in the back with heaters for cold nights or smoking if you're into that. This place is not even worth stumbling into at the end of the night. Seriously. Just because the place is classified as a dive doesn't give you a license to be a jerk to everyone. Seriously, being ignored and or abused is not something any paying customer SEEKS OUT in a restaurant or bar. If you hate being a bartender, might I suggest a different career? The inside is super meh, and god knows I would never want to sit at the bar (not sure you can actually), so the patio would seem like the place to go but it is 90% people smoking and that's a massive turn off for me and probably any other non-smoker out there. Came here after bar hopping with a friend of mine. Asked the bartender for a menu to which he replied we don't have any we aren't that fancy. OK. Ask him what he recommends or the drink he makes the most. He says "I don't know you what do you like" I respond with I like sweet drinks. He makes me the most sour drink I've ever had. Bartender also hugs a drunk girl who just kept staring at me and my friend and it was awkward. I get the keep Portland Weird but this was too weird. In the past I've had great experiences here, but recently I've been disappointed by the newbie tenders. With so many people looking for work, one would expect a manager to find a bartender who is customer friendly and customer oriented, and at least acts like he/she has held down a job in the past and wants to work. After my last experience, I wouldn't be surprised if the owner decided to hire his spoiled-rotten son to work on the floor for a few days before taking over the business, that is after he finds out the difference between tomato and grapefruit juice. And if that's the case- this place won't last another 6 months. Nice patio outside and nice drink specials. Poor food quality and extremely poor customer service skills. If you come here, ask to be served by a tender who's held down a job for longer than 3 days. read more

My new favorite hobby is to grab a new book or magazine at Powell's and read it at Momo's on their epic back deck in the summer. Have you ever wanted to enjoy the divy-Portland version of Cheers? Then this is your place. I love that everyone knows my name and my drink(s). Best bartenders ever. They know their stuff, they are happy to accomodate and they don't take bad behavior from bridge and tunnel people (that means you Hillsboro, Gresham, Beaverton). Awesome friendly and quirky regulars. What happens at Momo stays there. Just don't try to climb the wall, you idiot. To Jason claiming the weakest drinks ever, there are only 3 possible reasons for saying that: (1) you must have been a serious jerk to get stiffed like that, (2) you were already drunk and crotchety and couldn't tell, or (3) you don't know how much is in a shot / mixed drink. These are the strongest drinks I've paid so little for at a bar in PDX (great consistency - I've been coming here for over 2 years). I always have to get mine tall so that I can get through the extra boozy part (so not complaining!). Have a great time. Meet new people. Get a little more than buzzed. My review may be a bit biased by being turned off from how straight this place is and/or is trying to be, but I think it's relatively fair anyway. The service here wasn't good. That's the basic reason for the three-star review. We only had one drink here, but aside from there being nowhere to sit with a group of people when it was only 5pm, it was clear that it was going to take too long to get drinks for us to be happy. Oh, the booth we were sitting at (yes we had a place to sit, but it wasn't big enough) was falling apart. Sitting in it made the back fall over, so you couldn't lean back. I don't know, I guess it seemed like there might be a good experience that was possible here if given a chance, but it didn't go the best in our short time here. I gotta say, divey bars aren't usually my thing. I outgrew that when I moved out of my fraternity house. And while my tastes in beer haven't changed much since then (Coors Light for life!), my taste in venue has. But my heart just melts every time I walk into Momo. There's just something about the off-color paintings, the deep red hue of the bar, and the fact that I can wash my hands with a ketchup bottle filled with hand soap, that just make me yearn for this establishment. All that and there ridiculously amazing back patio. I could park myself out there for days during the summer and feel perfectly contented. Their happy hour menu is pretty solid. I love getting their nachos, and their mac and cheese is downright heavenly. I haven't gotten brave enough to try their sausages, but that has more to do with my personal issues with restaurant sausages than anything else ... but from what I can tell, everyone else loves them. I go here every Tuesday night for trivia with a group of friends, and we always have an absolute blast. Tiffany is our trivia goddess, and the waitstaff is incredibly friendly. Watching them make a Spanish coffee is usually the highlight of my night, and because they're so damn good, you get to watch them make the drink pretty frequently. Overall, I love the atmosphere, I love the drinks, I love the food, I love the people. I love Momo. Everyone should check it out. And if you're there on Tuesday, pop a squat and challenge us all in a rousing match of all things trivial! read more

This is not a fancy hotel bar. This is not a sports bar. This is not a 5-star restaurant. Don't fool yourself pretending that's what this is, cause it's not. Momo is a dive bar in essence without the dive bar smell, great atmosphere, great seating, awesome company, stiff drinks, fantastic prices, and reliable, friendly (yes friendly!) staff. But they're human too, not mindless bar servants. If you're nice and respectful to them, you get that right back. I can't say how much I love this bar. I miss the days I called it my living room when I was a two minute walk away. Phenomenal drink prices for the location and knowledgeable and friendly bar staff. Only bar food on the limited menu, but if you want bar food late at night, this is the best! Highly recommend the polish sausage and the nachos. Be warned, order the nachos with friends cause you'll need several hungry people to kill them. Add bacon to your quesadilla for a "treat yourself" touch. Back patio is killer, and HEATED, and now the addition is open in the main bar meaning more seating. Hooray! Overall, awesome bar, welcoming casual clientele, so casual and down to earth I wrote many a school assignment and even a thesis paper here. Conversations range from typical to ultra nerdy to downright drunk. You can walk in this bar alone and leave having met a half dozen new, nice people within an hour. You can also walk in this bar alone, and if you want to be left alone, people all respect your wish for peace. No bullshit bars are very rare downtown. read more

A recent bad experience at a different bar reminded me how much I adore this bar and still count it as my favorite on the west side. The drinks are cheap, and even cheaper during happy hour (you really can't beat $3.25 for a pint of micro or a well cocktail). Their food if great, although I am still disappointed that they got rid of their fryer a little over a year ago so I can no longer have their delicious fries with dill ranch. Staff is friendly and attentive, even when it's busy. Lastly, they have the most fantastic patio in all of Portland. The only thing I would change is having more covered seating with heatlamps (maybe removable for the summer?). They're hot commodity for the busy nights in the winter, and there's just not enough of them . Overall, excellent bar, excellent drinks, excellent staff, excellent food. It's a fine dive bar, and that's about it. They have cheap pisswaters (2.50 PBR's), dismal service along with minimal decorations and atmosphere, but it gets the job done. It is conveniently located in Downtown, right by the MAX and streetcar lines, and easy to get to from just about anywhere west of the river. I honestly only found this place when a friend and I were looking for a bar that was open at 2:00 PM on a Sunday. Just about every other place was closed until five, so we looked it up on Yelp and found this place. We came in, sat ourselves down and I was immediately treated with rudeness. When I asked the bartender what beers he served, he snidely replied "In cans, bottles or on tap". I responded by ordering the cheapest beer available, PBR. I didn't try any of the food, since my friend and I were there just to talk, but the atmosphere was actually quite nice in the afternoon. No loud, annoying drunks and bad music, and we could actually hold a conversation. Besides his initial rudeness, the bartender was attentive and served us well afterwards. If a hipster/beatnik environment is your cup of tea, then this place is good for you. I'll be back the next time I am in Portland to try out the food, and maybe a mixed drink or two. read more

Whether you're a tourist or a local wandering around the weird midsection of downtown, if it's a nice day, this place is worth a visit for a cheap drink out on the back patio. (If it's crappy weather and you have to drink inside, prepare your eyeballs and nose hairs for dark and divebar-urine-grungy.) I can almost guarantee you will have an enjoyable evening if you don't set your expectations too high. They are the only bar around this side of town that offers happy hour every day until 8pm, which is awesome and terrible. You get cheap, strong, drinks, but you usually have to wait in long lines of pretentious hipsters who won't make eye contact or open their moustachey mouths to even say hello. I hardly ever visit this place anymore since I realized Virginia Cafe was a much better alternative to a close-by dive bar (with better food), but I do have good memories of Momo's porch. I want the porch to make it's own bar. If they fix what I'd call a "serious food issue," I would probably re-evaluate my entire review of the place. The fact that they offer only unhealthy, gross pub food that takes an hour to get to you by an apathetic server is just unacceptable in Bar Town. (They have a snack vending machine -- that should say enough.) It would even be closer to acceptable if the food was happy hour priced, but there aren't even options for a happy hour food menu. The bartenders favor the regulars, and don't really give a rat's behind about anyone else. I could see people really loving this place for being their neighborhood post-work go-to, but I don't have the energy to try to make someone like me by pretending to be cool with my apathetic alcoholism. read more

My husband and I went here on Sunday to relax and watch the 49ers game and have a few drinks. Ryan and Mike were behind the bar and both of them were very friendly and personable. $3 well drinks during happy hour is a killer deal. Ryan made the best vodka gimlet I've ever had. We both ordered food; I had the grilled cheese (guacamole and bacon? yes please) with coleslaw (amazing) and chips for $7 which I felt was a good deal also. We'll definitely be back on a Friday or Saturday night to check it out during a busier time. Hey, first review of 2015! I feel like this place can and should be better. Upon recommendation, we got the nachos, which were definitely large, but seemed a bit burnt. I moved to Portland three months ago and I'm happy to find a bar I can go to any day of the week and feel "at home." Dimly lit, cozy booths, more than one bathroom, heated patio, decently priced booze. I'll come here days in a row. The staff is super friendly and attentive and the people that come here are welcoming. I've met some good friends here. The crowd is also pretty eclectic, so I never feel like I need to look or act a certain way. Divey while still maintaining a certain amount of finesse. read more

Quick service at the bar. Very versatile atmosphere whether you're looking to catch up with friends or cozy up with a date. Despite how popular MoMo is on weekends (max occupancy - ouch!), their policy means that once you're in, you can always find a seat in one of their many booths (and enjoy their wonderfully saucy portraits) or pick a table outside in their heated back garden. Friendly staff, not overly attentive, you order at bar, they serve your food to your table, they clear the plates, you go to the bar to get your own refills mostly. Cheap micro draft $3. Some legit pinball and TVs if you want to see the score. Restrooms-acceptable, clean. Outside, like a crazy person I have 'mates' that smoke and sit outside in the freaking cold. Their outside heater lamps are legit-however, it's still cold. Ive been there like 6 times the past two weeks, and I dont even live down there. Also best macaroni i think I've ever had in Portland. The only reason I give them a 4 rather than a 5 is because they need more seating. The tables are kinda small, seat about 4 people. Booths are 6 people. but if you have 7 or 8 people with you, its kinda hard to sit at the same table together. But i like the guys who work there. Friendly and nice.
