Fourteen of us showed up at this small place without a reservation, and they took us in. We had to wait outside for a few minutes while they set up the karaoke room to seat us. Kayla the server was very attentive, giving the kids a chalk board and toys to keep them busy. She even talked to the chef to modify a few dishes for the gluten free folks in our group. The food was delicious, but yes the service was slow, and one dish was missed, but corrected quickly. Kayla was very eager to make things right. YUM!!!! We found this amazing restaurant while wandering downtown Hilo and checked out the reviews online. Mom's did not disappoint! The service was awesome, ambiance was cool, and the food was incredible. We got the miso soup ($2 for the best bowl of miso soup? Count me in!), garlicy edamame, Misopacchio, and Tan Tan noodles. It was so good that we came back for our last dinner in Hawaii before boarding our red-eye. I just wish Mom's would put a restaurant in California... I'd never leave! Mahalo! read more

Great food, but very slow service, don't come starving. Such tasty spicy ahi rolls, wanted to order another, but server discouraged me bc 9 orders ahead and would be a wait. Hope they get more wait staff soon or just decide to not have as many guests at one time. read more

Everything was unique and delicious. The noodles were amazing, great chew. One of my favorite Japanese noodle dishes ever. The fish was fresh. They had delicious rolls with pork and make their own chashu. My only issue is it took over an hour to get served and the kid was starving. But hope to be back sometime soon! read more

So disappointed all the way around. Service was so slooow, but she finally brought out my dish. But she never brought my son's plate. Even after I asked twice. Every other table that came in after us got their meals, so I pointed that out and she shrugged. I was shocked at the lack of concern by our server. An hour and a half later, I finally told her to cancel my son's plate and just give me the bill. I get the bill and she's charged me for my son's plate that never came! Food quality is definitely better than others at Hilo. I went with group of people and the server was friendly and attentive. Inform us about specials and answered questions since this was the first time we went. I had their special sushi carpaccio on the board and sushi roll on their regular menu. Really good! Also tried their oyster shot deal. Definitely good place with group of people. Price wise can be pricey but quality of food is fair. My new favorite Japanese spot. This is a great little establishment perfect for Hilo, serving well prepared meals ranging from rice bowls to noodles to sushi rolls. The menu is small and thoughtfully designed. They have different menus for lunch and dinner. They recently opened so are still testing things out and refining their offerings, so expect changes and be patient and supportive! The space has a cozy ambience, and suitable for parties of 4 people or less. Beer and sake selection has improved since Kanpai (the previous restaurant). I loved the Tan Tan noodles, Charsui donburi, and 'Smash Q' pickled cucumbers. Their rice is yummy. Everything is reasonably priced. The flavors of Mom's reminds me of food in Japan. A lot of local Japanese food in Hawaii is very sweet and heavy on the sauce. At Mom's, it's more subtle...maybe that's why it's called Mom's...not too complex, feels home cooked and has TLC! read more

Lots of love in the food here but omg You can see how much the cooks care but they need to train the young one better and need another front of the house person. We have been here for 30 mins and have talked to the server once and have only had 1 Luke warm bowl of miso. We will be back on a different day hopefully they will be more staffed and there will be more experienced cooks. read more

One of Hilo's best kept secret! Took my husband there yesterday for his birthday. He loved his udon bowl with the freshest vegetables and wonderful flavor. The Hamachi carpaccio was amazing! Definitely not traditional Japanese food. Was a disappointing dining experience. Wife and I tried the Char siu noodles and we requested the hot (not cold) option. Char siu was more chinese in flavor, ajitama was cold, I did not care for the sauce as it was too sweet for my taste. We also ordered hot tea and it was tea bags, not a brewed loose leaf. The hot water served in the Asian style tea cups was too hot to be able to hold it comfortably. read more

Really nice wait staff, but the food and atmosphere were sad. Actually the food was good but the whole experience felt like it should be in a mall and cost half of what it did.
