With traveling to Detroit for the best part of the last 8 years, Mon Jin Lau is one of the few places I make sure to hit every time around Troy. The food is always good, the service is terrific and the environment is fun. Michael has managed the restaurant as long as I've been going there and makes every visit memorable, especially when I've brought clients. Loving all kinds of food, the menu always hits on something I'm in the mood for. Even when they're extremely busy (which is typical), you don't have to wait long for service and your food to arrive. The service was great, (Thanks Kat!) and the food was delicious. We shared platters of sushi family-style along with a few entrees everyone got to sample. Well...the sushi was quite good, the soft shell crab was tasty and thai peanut chicken skewers were juicy. Three gem noodles (pork, chicken, shrimp) were ample. I spiced mine up a bit with the chili sauce, nicee spicy. Beer prices were average. Mixed drinks were pretty and delicious, about $9. Ambiance was very cool, sleek modern design. A low set bar that we walked past to get to our table seemed filled with make-out specialists. Our table was a bit crowded. Near enough to overhear some of the pretentious conversation from folks that inhabit the region. Coat check would have been nice. Dinner for 4 was about $170. Included appetizers, drinks, dessert and 4 entrees --- more food than we could eat.( Price does not include gratuity) They don't take Discover Card, just in case you need to know that. Overall pretty sweet spot for Asian fare with an upscale edge. It certainly was leaps and bounds beyond PF Changs, though the concept is basically the same, its just that Mon Jin pulls it off. I made a return to Mon Jin Lau on Friday for lunch and unfortunately my rating will not change. The service was not impressive, in fact once we were sat no one came to our table to place drink or food order. I had to walk to the hostess and request a waitress. This sort of thing happens and I am understanding. I ordered Sushi this time and again was not impressed. 2 of the 3 rolls were 'spicy rolls' however neither had any spice or flavor at that. In all honesty it was very bland. I'm not trying to be harsh on this place, in fact I think the intent for a good restaurant is there maybe I just had a bad experience. But, after two visits I do not think I would ever go back for anything other than maybe drinks after work. read more

I can say enough nice things about this place. Great ambiance, great crowd, and a wait staff that takes care of you. My food is always perfect, my drinks are always prepared properly and poured heavy. They are a little on the expensive side, as for some of my drinks I pay $10each...but I only need 1. For a fusion restaurant, I will attest to the fact that I find the sushi here very appealing and delightful even compare with a restaurant that only does sushi. First, if I could give this place a zero rating I would. My friends and family used to go there all the time until a FRAUDULENT situation occurred on my credit card just this past week. We dined there just this past week and left a cash tip. The next day we realized that the waitress had placed another tip on the charge card receipt that we had signed with no tip. When I contacted the general manager to let him know that his wait staff had taken the receipt and applied a tip on there that we had never approved, he basically blamed me for not completely filling out the receipt. I saw that they had music on Wednesdays and the food looked amazing as well as the ambient. I was looking toward to coming to this place and bringing my friends to eat some good food and have a good time. We made a reservation. We were told we would have the table until 9:30pm. When we arrived we were being rushed to hurry up and eat bc there was a party coming in at 9pm. We spoke to the manager and explained that we knew coming in that we were going to have the table up to a certain time which was 9:30 but we were being rushed. Anyways he wasn't of much help, felt like they wanted us to eat quickly and leave. The drinks were trash. I asked for a mojito and it was probably the worst tasting mojito I've had in my life. I could tell they didn't want us to stay and drink nor have a good time. It's so unfortunate. I would never recommend a place to friends just based on what I see on social media. I've been here plenty of times and its an okay place for a asian restaurant. Came here again for my cousin's birthday on a wednesday night which every wednesday night, they turn the restaurant into a club scene at 11 pm. Me, my bro in law and my sister had to wait for 30 mins for our orders and my friends orders came first even though we ordered ours way ahead of them which is ridiculous. I ordered the salmon on the beach which i highly recommend, the shogun roll, the kalamari for appetizer which was expensive and the quanity wasnt the same as before. My brother in law ordered thai sizzling chicken and lemon grass chicken and said those 2 he knows is really good but this time he said it wasnt the same as it use to be. Hes chinese and he knows his chinese food. Maybe they had different cooks this time, who knows. Overall, not a great place. Way over hyped asian restaurant. Theres many asian restaurant out there thats way better than this place. But i'll come back again for their sushi though read more

One wonderful meal! We started with sizzling rice soup for two which had lots of big shrimp, chunks of chicken and delicious clumps of sizzling rice. I don't understand the hype about this restaurant. I dined in with ten other people on a slow night. Service was very slow, waitress ignored me, but took everybody else's order. Later, she said, "oh, I didnt know you were with them!" I ordered my food without spicy sauce, but they put it on anyways, and when I mentioned this to our waitress, she rolled her eyes, and said, "you can wipe it off of your food..." I have been wanting to come here for years but it always seemed packed and I had heard it was somewhat pricier. I wish I hadn't waited as long. We visited for the first time in October and have already returned at least once. The prices are similar to local Asian-inspired chains, maybe a smidge more and while they get busy, they do take call-in reservations. May was our server both times and she is familiar with the menu and helpful with your selection. As much as this goes against my normal M.O., we ordered the same set of apps, entrees, and dessert both times on each visit. I really liked what I had before I guess. The crab ragoons are the *best* in Metro Detroit. My boyfriend is a crab ragoon-head (and I am not too far off) and we could probably smash 4 orders of these as a meal if we were feeling greedy and leave happy. Make some funky concoction out of the sauces they bring to your table and see what works for you. We have also tried their sushi on one visit and can give that a thumbs up too. Egg rolls do not come with your meal so we always get one added on which is well worth the extra effort. My boyfriend gets the Szechuan Spicy Chicken with white rice. He enjoys this and I have had a bite or two and can approve his delight. I get the Thai Sea Scallops. I was nervous on my first try of the scallops due to my worry that they would be too spicy for my mild-only-tolerating palate but they were just right and the dish, although I never have left overs, is a decent size. The drink menu is not as extensive as I would have expected since this place always came across as little more "scene" with a potentially cool signature cocktail list but what I have ordered is good. Not to mention it's always fun to tell my server I will have "Sex with a dragon". For our dessert, we've had a cake (Alpine something or other) which is a surprisingly awesome chocolate cake with a delicious frosting and a white chocolate topping. Had a basic Sichuan dish but the sauce a bit thin, broccoli very much seemed as if it were cooked ahead of time and thrown in only to get more wilted soft and sponge up the too thin sauce. Wasn't bad just repeatable just about everywhere else. The egg roll was the same, kinda dry, not too greasy but not too flavorful either. Didn't love the fact the men's room door opens up right at the front desk so your first impression is the men's room, obviously not going to remodel but butt. I've been coming to MJL since I was a teen. I've continued to enjoy the delicious food, atmosphere & service!! The salmon on the beach is still one of my all time favorite sushi rolls! I met some friends here last night. To start with, I do not like fish, so sitting at the sushi bar would not be my first choice, but since they were already there, we stayed. To my great surprise, it was fascinating to watch the Sushi Man while we drank wine and ate what he was preparing. While we watched him, we would choose more to try. Again, while I do not like fish, I ate the sushi! I was great! The service could be a bit faster, wine is a bit overpriced, and the air conditioning was not working, so we were all sweating horribly! I would have scored this a four if it had not been for the ambiance issue with the A/C and the server inability to get a simple bottle of Pellegrino inside of 20 minutes. First of all, Mon Jin Lau should be getting 5 stars every single time, they are amazing....proof....they have been there for 42 years! One user wrote...I can't give it 4 stars because the A/C was broken...come on, like that's never happened..... I love, love Nancy, Yee...they are my girls. The best waitresses, they really care about your experience. Nancy remembers my order every time I walk in the door. I love the Singapore Noodles.....I pour the chili oil all over it. if you want to go and have a great time head out to mon Jin lau. This place has every possible thing you are looking for in regards to nu Asian cuisine. The sushi was great and actually better then some Japanese restaurants I went to. (ronin) MJL has a flare about it that ronin does not, the staff are exuberantly friendly (including the bouncers) and the atmosphere is very welcoming. The place has the feel of a traditional Chinese restaurant with the flare and hip attitude of a trendy lounge. It is a hybrid that works very well, the merging of tradition with the new. The party's rock, really you can go here on a Wednesday and it's more fun than many clubs on a Friday. Drinks are great and the food is awesome. If you are young and looking for fun it's the place to be. Its a great place and in my opinion beats out ronin and Chen chows because of its flare and staff. Also, the clientele is very "international", you have several engineering firms in the area that employ Germans. They know how to party rock. read more

We really like coming here during happy hour as well as for dinner! The food is excellent and the presentation is outstanding. If we ever had an issue with a dish, it was immediately taken care of and they responded promptly. We have become somewhat "regulars" here and always get great service by our favorite waiter, CHO. He is very kind and personable and he is very knowledgeable of the menu. If there was any suggestion, I would say the cushioned seating area in the lounge against the wall is getting a little uncomfortable and worn, so that should be replaced.
