I used to come here more often a few years ago and just got the chance to visit a couple of times recently - it's still just as amazing as I remembered. Popped in here today. Easy parking right outside. Very friendly staff. We selected the Sakura "Cherry Blossom" eclair, Saturday special. Delicious 5/5. A creamy delicious filling. We devoured the eclair. The Japanese soufflé cheese, 5/5, delightfully light and also delicious. The apricot tart slice with almond cream filling. It had a crispy firm buttery base, and as delicious yet very different to the other two desserts, also a 5/5 especially because it is not too sweet, when compared to other "fruit" flavour tarts. We also ordered the savoury croissant sandwich Croque-Madame with bechamel sauce, egg, cheese, ham and fried egg and an almond croissant which is usually also a favourite croissant of mine both looked delicious ( but not yet tasted) totalling just under $40. I forgot if we had bought six items it would be no tax. They had posted a sign that as there are price increases, credit card is now accepted except American Express. Bring your own bag. I wanted to try this place for a long time and I am glad I finally did. First of all nice atmosphere & cool Jazzy playlist and very traditional Japanese style polite service. Cozy and cute bakery. I picked up Thanksgiving Pastry Set which had one each of Pumpkin spice danish, Chestnut pie, Appleturnover, Cinnamon croissant, French toast and Kouign-amann. My favorite was Appleturnover and it was soooo good. It was full of apple and was moist. Unfortunately other than that other pastries were just okay. It did not blow me away. Maybe I had too much high expectation or these days in Toronto we have so many excellent bakeries? Not sure. read more

I always pick up fun pastries to bring home to my parents for dinner and they are quite hard critics. My dad hates anything too sweet, creamy, chocolaty etc. I went with the matcha cheesecake, the regular cheesecake, cream puff and matcha anko crumble tart. The custard in the cream puff was so silky and delicious, the matcha tart and cheesecake were a hit with my dad as they "weren't too sweet." The shop is super cute with parking right out front! I lived in Tokyo (prior to immigrating to Canada) enjoying patisserie hopping - visiting those Tokyo patisseries that have French-style pastries/cakes with Japanese influences and ingredients. Those patisseries are competing on their products' looks/elegance, tastes, texture, balance, and quality of the ingredients. In Canada, I have visited many places that use "Japanese style cakes" as their selling point in/around the GTA - unfortunately, many places are disappointing. Mon-K never uses "Japanese style" as their main selling point, but their products do have Japanese influences and never disappoint me. This is one of the few places that truly keep high standards of Japanese patisseries in terms of taste, quality of the ingredients, and elegance in aesthetics. We had: Coconut Yuzu-mango mousse Mont Blank Cream puff Japanese-cheesecakestyle soufflé cheesecake Green tea tiramisu Royal Dark chocolate Tiramisu All are delicious, and I especially recommend their cream puffs. When I first ate it about 10 years ago, I was so excited! Our family has been a big fan of this since. It is filled with a smooth vanilla custard in the puff with cookie dough baked on top, giving it an additional unique crispy texture. I've been sooo looking forward to trying out this Japanese patisserie! Get here early because they sell out and don't forget to pay for parking. Entering the bakery, the display in front has all the refrigerated pastry masterpieces like their famous Strawberry shortcakes, Mont Blancs, Eclairs, etc. Walking around, the side has quiches and freshly baked goods like croissants, beignets, baguettes, etc. Overall the prices on each item ranged from ~$3-$6 which is quite reasonable for the quality! The staff were all very busy, but they still were pretty accommodating & polite :) After oo-ing and ahh-ing, I got the following: CHESTNUT MONT BLANC 4/5 - it was good but a bit too sweet. The choux pastry base and whole chestnuts were great though! CHESTNUT PIE 4/5 - was really interesting to try, very flaky and crisp on the outside with some nice croissant-y dough in the inside FILLED with a chestnut purée paste. I wished it could've been warmed up to bring out more of the buttery dough. CHOUX VANILLA CREAM PUFF 4.5/5 - $3.25 is great for a medium sized AMAZINGLY done choux pastry absolutely filled with authentic vanilla bean cream that felt rich and cooling on my tastebuds ! I love chocolate and usually don't like it with any fruits (like chocolate truffles with cherry or orange filling), but this dessert was Good. Passed by Mon K for the first time the other day... and was completely blown away. Only after did I find out this place has long been hyped to be an awesome patisserie. And I have to say, I get it. Came here before 12 on a weekend (which was good because apparently they run out of some stuff if you come later in the day). My wife and I were craving some sweets and carbs, and proceeded to go wild: - Cream puffs: Amazing! Easily the standout of all these great goodies. The puff had an interesting cookie-like texture, which accentuated the smooth texture of the cream. - Almond croissant: OMG super buttery! - Pear chocolate danish: Again, super buttery. Pear was properly tart which complimented the chocolate underneath. - Mont-blanc: Great height on the puree, smooth and surprisingly tasty (had ones that are on the bland side - this wasn't one of them). - Japanese short cake: Delicate flavours, smooth cream, light cake. - Lemon tart: Tasted like summer - fresh and tarty. - Chestnut pastry: Strong chestnut taste, good airy-ness to the pastry. - Beignet: Nice and hefty, though would have wanted just a bit more of the chocolate hazelnut filling. - Dark chocolate eclair: Great cream filling! But the chocoholic in me wanted a darker chocolate topping. - Bread: Almost-chewy crust and pillowy-soft middle, just how I like it. - Iced latte: Meh. Super cute patisserie. Everything looked picture perfect as though it was from an anime. I didn't have a chance to buy it, but their strawberry shortcake looked like absolute perfection. Perfect amount of filling etc. During this visit I got their vanilla custard cream puffs, matcha tiramisu, tiramisu and a matchacchino. The cream puff was absolutely amazing. Light crispy out layer and a perfect amount of filling. Matcha tiramisu has a good amount of matcha. Not overpowering but enough to satisfy your matcha fix. Made me close my eyes after every bite. Tiramisu was just your standard tiramisu. Good but nothing special. As for the matchcchino, nothing that stands out. Had better matcha lattes elsewhere. Husband's colleague highly recommended this bakery so while we traveled midtown two months ago, we decided to swing by and check it out. Very small outlet but super cozy. No eat-in space. Things I tried: Yuzu (a Japanese citrus fruit), Earl Grey and a Green Tea Macaroon - $2 each for a two bite sweet treat with a crisp, fragile shell and a soft chewy center. Not fond of the flavors I chose; next time I'll try the other flavors and pair it with tea or coffee. Japanese Souffle Cheesecake - The owner said it is a similar recipe to Uncle Tetsu's but while Uncle Tetsu's is more spongy, hers is more like a traditional cheesecake. More cheese than cake, it tasted better with the fresh fruit. Cookie Choux a la Creme (Cream puff) - This was my absolute favorite for the divine custard whipped cream flavored with real vanilla. It was so light but amazingly rich in flavor; can I just have a tub of this to go? Important note: paid parking in the front and it's head in diagonal parking. Wouldn't be so bad if Coxwell Avenue wasn't so busy all the time: pretty dangerous backing out in traffic. You might want to bring a friend along to help you spot cars or take the bus. Also according to Evo X there's free 1 hour parking on Lankin M-F 9a-5p if you don't mind the walk. I would definitely come back to try more of their desserts if I was in the area. read more

However, their selection was down to almost none by noon so if you want to get a better selection you need to go earlier. Not sure why the machine asks for tip when the bag the pastries and hand them to me over the counter. If the item is $6 and then you want a tip on top, it's get a bit pricey. Mon K is a hidden gem in East York. It is a cute little shop that serves Japan pastry and macaron. Their cakes are well made, the monte blanc is a must try. The vanilla latte is creamy, but the macaron is a little bit sweet and chewy, I am a little bit disappointed. Overall, a great little pastry shop in East York. OMG, I was so excited to try this place. Agree with Chowhounders that the croissants and pastries were ok, but nowhere in the same category as Rahier or PetiteThuet. Macarons were awful. I've had many across the GTA and I'm sorry to say they were really the worse I've had. The raspberry chocolate tasted like cough syrup and was under baked - very, very soggy, wet and gooey. Green tea was brown in color (odd) and lacked flavor, salted caramel was the best one. Pistachio, again, no flavor, early grey ... was that earl grey? Donut had a tiny sliver of chocolate hazelnut. Honestly, if you're in the area, give it a try but it's really not worth to go out of your way. There are a ton of better pastry shops in Toronto!!! Everything is really, really overpriced and TINY. The outdoor seating area in front of the store on the sidewalk looks like a setting from one of the romantic anime. Choices and Selections.. There are a lot to choose from. Kuro Goma Pudding ($3.20) - Light and Smooth, I do love Black Seasame Chestnut Pie with Almond Cream ($3.20) - Rich and Buttery, I do love Chestnut Mizudashi Sencha ($2.20) - Cold Brewed Green Tea, high in antioxidant Since I was having everything to go, the staff did package them securely for me. Fantastic local bakery in East York. Never disappoints. We've tried pretty much all the pastries and small cakes there. They're all delicious. The staff are so friendly as well. Visited on a Saturday just after noon and it was super busy with a line outside. They were already sold out of their croissants, baguettes and sandwiches. We opted for the lemon tart, cream puff and latte. The latte was fine nothing special. The lemon tart was quite good and the star was the cream puff. Super light but decadent at the same time. Bursting with cream in the middle - make sure you eat over a plate, it's super messy but you won't want to waste any of that delicious cream. When I learn about this bakery from a Toronto Japanese magazine, I am very excited to try it out. First of all, the decor of the shop is nice from outside to inside. The decoration and the music played in the shop create a very comfortable place to enjoy a piece of cake or cup of coffee. First, I ordered an almond croissant, a caramel hazelnut twist, and a coffee. The qualify of the pastry is good and decent. Although I cannot say the baked goods is the best in town, it is up to the standard. The almond filling isn't too sweet and the croissant is flaky. The hazelnut twist is fresh and crispy. The only complain is that the baked goods are a little cold. The coffee is fresh and fine. After that, I ordered a few more desserts, Green tea tiramisu, Koko (coconut biscuit cake), a cream puff, and a baguette. Green tea tiramisu has a strong green tea / matcha flavour which is very yummy. Cream puff is another surprised. The filling is so light and smooth; the puff is flaky and light as well. I can eat a few at one shoot ! Koko disappointed me a little because I can't taste much coconut flavour yet it is still a decent dessert. The presentation of the desserts is so cute and attractive. It was delicious so my mum and I decided to check out the store today to try their other desserts. They opened 6 months ago so this place is fairly new; however, the baker has experience in many fine Toronto establishments. It's definitely a nice addition to the shopping strip along Coxwell. Mon K is a small family-run business with a very French flare. When my parents lived in Paris, there were many cafes and patisseries that looked like Mon K. Seating is limited, but if you do snag a table, it's a nice place to relax over coffee and something to eat. Their pastries are both savory and sweet; they also have sandwiches, soups, coffee, and chocolate. I was drawn here by the grey reviews and because it was listed as a top bakery on blogto. I was in the mood for matcha and ended up getting both the matcha creampuff ($3.50) as well as the matcha tiramisu ($5.95). The tiramisu was not really what I expected. The cake consisted of layers of green tea sponge cake and mascarpone and cream cheese mousse. Sadly, the matcha flavours were overpowered by the flavour from the cream cheese. The mousse itself was quite good and had a creamy consistency but when neither the matcha or tiramisu flavours come through, it seems the dessert has missed its mark. The cream puff came highly recommended by others on yelp and as expected, had a nice velvety custard with an authentic matcha flavour. I was quite impressed with the amount of custard in the pastry but I did find the puff itself to be a little on the harder side. When I compare it to the cream puffs from Bibble and Sip in NYC, it comes up a bit lacking. Nonetheless, still a a good cream puff and definitely satisfied my matcha craving. A few flavours of Cream Caramel did catch my eye while I was there and since I was quite impressed with the custard in the cream puffs, I may be back to give this place another try. read more

It is so so light and fluffy, i think i could consume 10 in one sitting. it's that goodddd. The houjicha pudding is the bomb. The roasted tea flavour is really strong and the texture of the pudding is silky smooth. The Creme caramel is also a good choice if you aren't into roasted tea flavours. However, the texture is more runny and less firm compared to the houjicha. The matcha latte wasn't anything special, so I probably wouldn't come back for the drinks. I will definitely be back to try their cakes and other baked pastries. read more

Bought 8 different pastries - might as well, since I don't go to downtown area (i.e.anywhere with subway line) a lot. Tried 2 right away, OH SO GOOD!! Had to hold off eating the rest (cz I bought some as gift). Then as soon as I left the store, just realized I need to walk back 45min (in hot weather). Felt so worried with my green tea cheesecake on my way. Anyway, cheesecake changed its shape due to heat, but STILL taste delish!! Gave 2 away to colleagues (after debating for sometime to give it away or not) , and they all love it. This means, for real, EVERY single DIFFERENT pastries I bought is GREAT! They are not too sweet. I lovvvvvvve this place. It is now my usual lunch place on my workdays. I'm so glad my work place is located nearby. I love their croissant sandwiches. It is simply because their croissants are the best I've ever had, and ingredients are fresh. All of the bakeries, including croissants, quiche, baguettes, dessert cakes, macaroons, apple turnover, cold brewed green tea, espresso, etc etc are good. I love their decoration. The two Japanese ladies (I bet they are cuz they speak fluent Japanese lol) are very friendly. All these combination make this place such a fabulous Western and Japanese fusion bakery and cafe. It is just the style I like and enjoy. I know I should give it a five star but the service is a bit slow when people come at the same time. Therefore, how about 4.5 stars? A bit of the waiting time is totally deserved because they care each customer just like a good doctor spends longer time each time with his patients.... This is what this city needs more Japanese/French inspired patisseries. After being thoroughly impressed with the another place that is fusion of the above mentioned styles on the west end I was anticipating my visit here. For starters this is a very odd location for this kind of spot as it sticks out like sore thumb. Don't get me wrong the setup is very nice but its not what one would expect in this area. Maybe this area will grow on me as I had never been in this neck of the woods. Ah well appearance aside its the baked goods that should count in this kind of place. My benchmark for a good patisserie is a good croissant so had to have one of those. The other dessert offering look very nice. They were even selling a full and mini version of croquembouche! So if you are looking for a wow factor there you have it folks go for it by all means as its very hard to do at home. This one is missing the caramel web but is a site to behold nonetheless. I ended up having the chocolate mousse with creme brulee center. My partner in crime settled with a breakfast sandwich and coconut/raspberry concoction and a macaron. First the croissant this one can go toe to toe with the best in the city. You can see all the effort that has been put into getting this croissant right. Now for the other desserts things faltered quite a bit. The chocolate dessert was decent. Nice soft mousse with decent aeration. The creme brulee center gave a nice contrast. If they had any sponge to hold the thing together I must have missed it. 3 stars for this dessert. The macaron and coconut dessert were just meh. Visually appealing the coconut dessert was lacking the intense punch one would crave from it. I know Japanese dessert kind of hold back on intensity of fruits(the hold back on sugar is highly appreciated though) but this one was a miss. I had wanted to check this patisserie out for some time, but was never in the area until yesterday. This Japanese run patisserie manages to present Japanese inspired baked goods in a setting that manages to blend into the street of businesses on Coxwell. When you walk in, the charming atmosphere makes you feel like you're part of the neighbourhood, and when you look at the display cases, you'll see the usual staples like almond croissants and other types of bread, along with more upscale fair like a decorated Japanese cheese cake. I had the Mont Blanc pastry which looks like a you guessed it, mountain of chestnut paste, with a cream interior on a cake base, topped with chocolate and a whole chestnut. The care and precision that they assemble their pastries shows that they really put a lot of effort into each piece. If only this place were closer to me, I would come more often. read more

The bakery shop is abit far from where I live but decided to give it a try because there is another Japanese convenient store close by. So I can visit two places while I am in the area. We also tried the cappuccino, but its average, to be honest, taste like the kind you will get from the nespresso coffee machine... The staff is friendly also...
