I've been coming to Mon Kou for over 20 years. Generally their food, service and experience is worth about a 3 star rating. The last time I went there was not the case however. I would say the last visit would have been a 1 star, here's why... I went there one night with friend on a weekend night. It was pretty crowded, but I was seated right away and someone came by to bring water, bread, duck sauce, hot mustard and tea all within about 5 minutes. It seemed everything was going to go well, and we had a nice booth and could see the multi colored "bubble display" from our booth. I went to pour some tea and realized that the handle was very sticky. This was sort of a turn off, but not a big deal for me. Then 20 minutes went by and we never got a server. We later found out that the guy assigned to our table didn't want to wait on us because he had favorites and was expecting some friends to come into the restaurant who he wanted to wait on instead of us. I was kind of glad because I saw that he was already in trouble for bringing the wrong order to one of his tables. We ended up getting someone to wait on us, but I think she was supposed to be a runner and not an actual waitress. Anyway, she took our order. I ordered a combo rice, egg roll and hunan chicken. I wanted the pork fried rice and my friend got another combo with beef fried rice. So after waiting another 25 minutes our order was brought out. The server left before I could ask why the portions seemed so large for a combo. As we were eating we determined that our rice dishes had been mixed up. ( I was eating beef rice etc). The server came back and when we told her that the rice was mixed up she just switched them in front of us even though we had already been eating them already! Usually you would bring out a new rice item. Later when we got the bill we realized that it was much more expensive. Again we called over the server. She said "I ordered alla carte because that's what I thought you wanted" (even though I pointed to the combo on the menu when I was ordering). Then she just left! My friend got up and called over the manager. When we were talking to the manager the server came running over to us and called me a liar in front of the manager, saying I ordered alla carte! The manager told the server not to get involved anymore and apologized, and we got our bill adjusted. The manager and server continued to argue as they left our table, Then the manager came back and apologized again. We paid and left. I probably won't be back, at least not for a long time. As as the food, it was okay, I wouldn't call it anything other than average. Dragon Villa has much better Chinese food. read more

I had been a few times before and then came back recently for another visit. Boy, has it changed over the years. The food was flavorless and awful. Literally every part of it. I had the beef and broccoli, crab rangoon, and a vegetable dish. The beef was the worst and I mentioned that I didn't like it. The bartender looked at me condescendingly and then got his manager, who stuck his finger in my dish, tasted it, and said that it was fine. I said that I begged to differ, and he finally agreed to take it off the bill. I gave the rest to my friend who was dining with me, but liked none of it. I was busy running around yesterday, and didn't feel like going home to cook. I wasn't sure of what I was in the mood to eat, and then passed by Mon Kou restaurant in S. Attleboro, MA. I hadn't had Chinese food in a little while, and the building was very nice, so I thought I'd give it a try. I have had Chinese food across the United States, some good, some not. But, I would have to say "hands down" that Mon Kou was the WORST food I have ever had! I had to throw it away!!! I ordered beef fried rice, which was literally a bowl of mush. Egg foo young which had no flavor, and the gravy tasted like the metal from the wok. I also bought spare ribs, and they were pretty bland (barely any marinade). I have never written a restuarant review until now, but, this forced me to say "buyer beware"!! My $35 was a complete waste!!! read more

Chose this restaurant for my birthday dinner with my family because I have always loved coming here but never again! Our experience tonight was absolutely awful, this place does not accommodate well for large parties whatsoever. I have always loved the food regardless of the slow service but tonight has truly changed my mind about the place and I will no longer come here. Made a reservation earlier in the day for 14 people. Our waitress received absolutely no help and also was waiting on the entire side of the dining room we were all sitting in. Food came out sporadically over the time span of 45 minutes and all out of order, half was cold despite the covers on the metal dishes. We understand that the place was obviously short staffed however if they were unable to properly handle a large party they should not have taken the reservation. Nobody had drinks refilled or napkins and our waitress was clearly frustrated which reflected in the service she provided to us. She should have had help from other staff to run food, give refills, clear dishes, etc since she was waiting on so many other tables at the same time as us. Our bill came to over $500 and despite our awful experience, the owner refused to discount our bill or do anything to help make this situation better. When we complained and asked the owner to rectify the problems she refused and said she has never given discounts to anyone and that the kitchen was short and did not care. Clearly just money hungry and does not care about her customers at all. I feel bad for the employees and hope other customers choosing to dine here do not have the same horrible experience we did. read more

I have to say unfortunately the food tasted rather bland. I had a dinner with chicken wings, beef teriyaki, and ribs along with an egg roll. The egg roll had to be taken off the bill because after I took a bite into it, it tasted as if it was previously frozen and also had a strange taste... I immediately spit it out into the napkin. The rice tasted as though it was in a rice heater all day, very bland and cold. The wings were gamey, and the ribs had to be the worse I had ever eaten. I hate to be this blunt but the truth is the truth. I used to dine at MonKou ten years ago and always thought it was pretty good but unfortunately those days are gone. I sadly say goodbye. I have nothing but positive remarks to make of this establishment. The chicken wonton soup was loaded with veggies and absolutely delicious. The spring rolls were crispy, flavorful, and well prepared. The cocktails (I tried 2) were both flavorful and not watered down. Quality cocktails. The entree was delicious, cooked very well, tasty as heck, and the presentation of the dishes was very well executed. The staff was friendly and helpful. Mon Kou is no longer worth the premium. I bought a Pu Pu for Two and their House Lo Mein and it came to...$42? What? I can go to a takeout place not too far from Mon Kou and get overall better quality for ~$25. We threw out the Lo Mein as it was very dry, and the Pu Pu platter was fine but nothing special. Did they ring me up wrong? $42? Never again. :( read more

Love this place! Food and drinks are great and the manager is so nice and welcoming. Our favorite place for Chinese! Their lunch specials and combination dinners are a lot of food for a good price. We ordered the Sesame chicken dinner combo and this is what we got: a sliced chicken breast with Sesame sauce poured over it. The chicken was so tough and dry it was pretty much inedible, I got through one piece and had to throw the rest away. I've never seen Sesame chicken made this way so we were sure it was a mistake. We called to ask for a refund and were told that's just how they make it and were only allowed the option of coming back for something else or a credit for another time. The manager seemed insistent that this was totally normal and that they do bread the chicken breast and fry it there, but I don't see a single piece of breading on this chicken, just very dry skin. Nowhere on their menu is this mentioned, and pictures posted in other reviews clearly show breaded chicken chunks on similar dishes. I completely understand if there's a shortage, but why aren't you guys letting people know before they order and pay? This is an extremely common and popular dish and it seems really strange to be misrepresenting what you're serving. This is your above average Chinese lounge/takeout spot. My companion I was with brought me several times and every time I loved it. Great ambiance and decor and a welcoming lobby. The bar could be a little bigger but it is what it is. Great crab Rangoon, scallion pancakes and pork fried rice. They got keno and a wide selection of tiki crafted, strong cocktails. Friendly bartender service as well. The crowd is very diverse as you would expect in a Chinese lounge. Which always makes for some interesting people watching. It's a good spot to gather with friends and family and have a fun time and fill up and have a few tasty beverages. Can't wait to go back again. read more

I am new to the area, and had to get a quick lunch and stumbled upon Mon Kou. Decor was just as every other yelper described- a bit dark and the polynesian theme a bit overhwelming- delightfully tacky- is the perfect description. Service was fast and friendly. The food- well, not that great. Hot tea had been oversteeped and was bitter. Fried shrimp breading was three times the size of the shrimp - looked pretty but mostly batter. I had the shrimp with vegetables and fried shrimp with steamed white rice and an eggroll. Lunch specials only come with pork fried rice, but they will give you white if you request. I ordered an egg roll to see how it was- at $2.40 each - not that good. Fillled with cabbage and pork, it looked good but was a bit mushy. OK flavor- probably would not order again Rice was good. Shrimp and vegetables in a white sauce - how could it be that bad? It wasn't horrible. Just completely tasteless. 5 shrimp and WAY too many big chunks of bok choy. Just a few,water chestnuts, canned mushrooms and pea pods. I ended up eating the 5 shrimp, the 4 mushroom pieces, and some rice. Blah. Nothing made it better- not salt, mustard, duck sauce- you name it. The drink menu looks fun - who doesn't love Polynesian drinks? Also they seem good based on the reviews, so maybe i would go for a drink. But it's not that close, so will continue my search for a pretty good chinese restaurant. China Lantern in Pawtucket has great chinese chickedn salad and Lake Tsing Tsong shrimp (?), but if I want something else, I have to keep looking. Went there last year for a Mai tai. It had a funny taste like the fruit mix had gone bad or they used dish water to make the mai Tai mix. I asked for a new drink and told them it had a rancid taste. The bartender put a straw n my drink and tried it. He said it was perfect. Got up and left. If that's what a mai tai taste like, I'll be danmed if I try their food. read more

This place used to be good but to be honest I was never a big fan. My family and I went her ever other week with friends and family. Alcohol is great and never watered down. Food has become nasty almost as if they keep it from the day before and microwave it. The old lady at the front desk is very rude and disrespectful. We have a baby and asked for a bigger booth so the baby could sit with us without a problem she gos no you sit where I put you or leave. We got up and walked out. They never come bye and refill your drinks wether it's tea soda or water and we even had issues getting another scorpion bowl . Needless to say I will never be going back. My mom and I recently visited for lunch and the service was almost non existent and the food was over cooked. My lemon chicken was over cooked to the point of rubber and my mom's crab Rangoon was so over fried that only the center was edible. The lemon chicken also tasted more like sweet and sour (and was served with pineapples and cherries) than lemon. The waitress never came to check on us after dropping off the food. So disappointing!!!!!!! - Food was really bland, the tastiest item was Chicken wings! - Empty restaurant and our water and tea was never replenished. - Half our table ordered but one person was undecided, so she asked server to put in the order and come back. Oh Mon Kou what happened to you? I used to live in Attleboro and went here quite a few times and it was always great. Now I come back about 6 years later and apparently they have become one of the many other Chinese restaurants that just gets it shipped in frozen. It was bland and gross tasting all at the same time. I'm pretty sure I tasted chlorine and some other unnatural chemical. The only food that was ok was the crab Rangoon's. Ah an old favorite! I have been coming to Mon Kou and sitting in the bar area for years to have dinner and a drink with friends. We almost always go for the scallion pancakes as an app. Theirs are really good! My friend tells me their Scorpion bowls are very good as well. I also like their lo meins and chow meins. read more

We first wanted to go Shanghai Gardens which was their neighboring restaurant but their kitchen was closed so we came to Mon Kou. Mon Kou is one of the two Chinese restaurant that are open late in Attleboro. Our first time dining here so when we walked in we were amazed with the decor and how big the place was. The people up front though, not so nice and welcoming. We were seated by a nice young gentleman though. To be quite honest, I think he deserves to work at a better place. The vibe and people here are just off and I can tell that he tried so hard to keep it upbeat and be a great waiter to us. The menu was a little bit all over the place. It took me awhile to find what I wanted because everything in the menu either look or sound the same. The food on the other hand, is presentable but tasteless. No flavor what so ever. Everything is extra greasy. My mixed drink was okay but can be better. Overall, the 2 stars is one for the waiter and one for the decor. Other than that, if I was the owner I would definitely revamp the restaurant. The restaurant itself with the decor has so much potential. Maybe a new menu and dishes perhaps? But whatever the chef is cooking back there ain't it. read more

This place has been here forever but I'd never stopped until last night. The only thing positive about the visit was the kindness and professionalism of the server. The food was a range of okay to terrible. I had to send back the main dish I ordered because the meat was so dry I couldn't even chew it. I ended up just getting a lo mein instead and it was dry for a lo mein but at least edible. The decor of this establishment should have been the warning sign. It's tired, dirty, dated, and just tacky. You could actually see one cleaner spot on the carpet that revealed what color the carpet was supposed to be and the rest was almost black from filth. I'm sure they must cater to the crowd too drunk to care. Lots of other great places in the area with similar fare that this place would not be an option for me again. read more

The owner is the absolute worst, we order a seafood platter That was literally an entire head of " bok Choy" Literally 2 pieces of shrimp two half Cooked scallops literally gritty and rubbery all at once. When we first arrived, we were going to be sat in the section w all the large table and families and I asked for the more intimate center as we did not have our little ones and it was more quaint etc, although not entirely an " upscale place " to begin w, we just wanted quick sit down and great crab Rangoon's ( which they do have ) that was the best part of our meal. After asking our wait staff to please remove the dish and exchange for a chicken dish ( good old trusty) the owner came over and literally yelled at us slamming her hand on the table asking " WHAT DID U NOT LIKE 3 times to the point at which allll of the other tables around us were staring at this point wanting to know what the heck was happening we were fine w paying trust ... it's not the money but after this we will NEVER return l, I was showing my husband the best rangoons in town and was yelled at twice I. The process lol the owner also yelled at one of her own wait staff after they were trying to explain to us what she was saying as her English is extremely broken... sorry food was like dog food. I was disappointed with this restaurant. We were seated immediately on a Friday night. That was probably a sign. The hostess seated us in a booth with torn seat cushions and I noticed the place looked outdated and dirty. Our server was friendly. I ordered the beef with broccoli combination and it was extremely bland. The "beef" had weird chewy texture and the sauce was a brown, gelatinous consistency. My kids ordered the teriyaki beef appetizer which was tough to chew and had a nasty aftertaste. I would not recommend anyone to come here. It is what it is. New England style chinese food. Yes, you get what amounts to a standard, white bread, almost hamburger bun-ish roll when you sit down. A little bowl of "duck sauce" and mustard sauce will probably go with whatever you're going to order, right? I ordered a Szechuan pork dish that was heavy on the red and green bell peppers, yet despite the "one red pepper" next to it on the menu, had zero chili heat. None. I asked for additional chili paste and was able to make it serviceable, but the pork itself was not as tender as I'd like on top of being under seasoned. You can certainly go the sodium-bomb fried rice route. A drink from the bar that should've featured fresh lime juice was overly sweet, but strong enough so that I really didn't mind. :) read more

Mon Kou is one of those places that as a kid your parents brought you too, you grew up tasting it and because of that... that's where teh bar is set. My boyfriend swears upside down and sideways that it's the best in the area.. i on the other hand am not that impressed. The food is pretty standard for Chineese in the area. Prices for this establishment are right on point with their competition so in that respect i'd say they're reasonable. We order takeout by showing up there and putting an order in, grabbing a drink at the bar, then by the time our drinks are done the food is ready. So i'd say they're pretty quick on delivery in that respect as well. The drinks are pretty good. We normally split a scorpion bowl (hey it's a Chineese restaurant so when in rome people lol). THe thing i don't like about this place... the decorations are super tacky. It's suppose to mimick a jungle. We've sat down to eat here twice... both HORRIFIC experiences. Both times are waitors were awful, extremely rude and quite honestly didn't really care about customer service. The second time we ate here was the absolute worst experience i've ever had a restaurant. I don't know if there was an issue with their septic system or if someone shit all over the bathroom but in the dining room the stench was so potent that i swear you could taste it. Needless to say... you definately lost your appetite after about 5 minutes. The waitors just acted like everything was fine and kept going as business as usual. We complained but nothing was done ... no apology was given.. like i said business as usual. I'd hope at this point the septic issue has been resolved but it definately put a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended) about the place. If they're establishment smells that bad and they're still serving food.. makes me not even want to think about what the kitchen looks/smells like... and if nothing was done to make the customer happy or apologize or move their seats... then clearly their level of customer service is lacking. We still do take out here .. like i said because it's my boyfriends favorite place but i can guarantee you... you'd never catch me sitting in that dining room again. read more

The Mon Kou has been around for a long, long time and like a lot of you, I used to come here many years ago and always liked it. But it's gone WAY downhill since then.... Went a few Saturday nights ago and it was slamming busy! They gave me and my party of four a table in the back of the bar area .... and we waited.... and waited.... and waited.... so we went to 'find' our waitress so we could order drinks and she told us she'd be over..... then we waited.... finally, we got a drink order in..... and we waited.... and waited... and waited.... we saw our drinks sitting on the bar about 30 feet away (they sat there for about 15 minutes) and eventually we asked the busboy if he could just bring us our drinks.... he was VERY nice, friendly..... and he did bring them to us.... from the time we sat down to the time we got our drinks was between 30 - 40 minutes.. So the waitress comes back (I think it was a different one) and we order food. She proceeds to tell us that they were very busy tonight and that is why everything is taking so long ... okay, well, shouldn't a restaurant be prepared for that? It's not 'our' fault you're busy.... customers still want decent service........ and then we wait.... and wait.... and wait..... for our food... couple of apps come out... I got a shrimp cocktail, nothing to write home about... a few measly shrimp... The food was bland, as others on here have said. The one thing I did like was the chicken on a skewer... very tasty... All in all, we spent about 2 1/2 hours there....we ended up giving the busboy $10 because he was very friendly and tried to help us as much as he could... Hope this is just an aberration.... I'd hate to see this restaurant close, it's been a landmark in Attleboro for so long..... they desperately need to update the interior, though, it looks the same as it did about 35 years ago. I ordered a Jim Beam and Coke when I got there. What I recieved was a cheap whiskey heavily poured into water with a light syrup mix. No carbonation left at all. My girlfriend ordered a mudslide. That was an unknown milky drink. So we switched to beer. Food was ok. I was not very impressed by it. If you are going to serve rolls though, serve rolls made that day. read more
