I've been to several French restaurants around the country but I must say this is by far the best! Stopped in on my way back to Los Angeles from Bishop, got there a little before their opening time and waited for them to open. I was the first customer that evening and everyone was very attentive. Ordered the French Onion soup to start followed by the Lamb Chops, finished with the Creme Brûlée for desert. Everything was absolutely incredible!!! Last night in Ridgecrest and a local associate invited myself and two other colleagues to this amazing restaurant. The owner greeted me upon entering as the others had already arrived. The appetizers set the tone for the rest of the evening because the presentation and taste were simple but great. I ordered the lamb and others at the table had the tuna and chicken entrees. Everyone enjoyed their meals and were very satisfied with the freshness and quality of each dish. The food and staff are exceptional, attentive and have high standards which were met and exceeded from my perspective. Our waitress, a young lady, did a great job of explaining the menu and provided excellent service the entire evening as she appropriately attended to her different tables. My only regret was I didn't have dessert and wished I had visited this awesome restaurant beforehand. read more

This place is great! I've never loved green beans before; but now I do. We ordered their rack of lamb with mustard sauce, and had scalloped potatoes. This restaurant lives up to the French reputation of fine food. The service is superb and they devote their attention to you. The owner is present and involved. Everyone is friendly, professional, and no one is stressed out like at most restaurants. This restaurant runs like a swiss watch. Their creme brule' is very light and perfectly slightly sweet. They also serve lemonade, rasberry, and another juice. They have free refill soda. Their prices top off at $26, and the portions will fill you up. Great value for your money. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time. They had a sign that said all booked up for the night. Their menu was smaller than what people posted on Yelp years ago. I highly recommend Mon Reve'. I'm a little late for my review as I ate here earlier this summer. I think I still dream of their lamb chops! To die for! The service was amazing. He went above and beyond to make sure we had the best wine for our taste AND what we were eating. Perfect atmosphere for a date night or night out with a group of friends. My husband and I had wanted to try Mon Reve, but waited for a special occasion to make our reservation. On our 20th Wedding Anniversary, we arrived to find our reserved table waiting for us. The ambiance sucked us right in and we felt like we were in a European eatery. The chairs were pretty comfortable during our 2-hour meal. Our water glasses were always full (something I always measure a restaurant by) and the service was friendly and efficient for the number of guests enjoying their meals. We shared an order of the French Onion Soup. We were delighted with each bite and eagerly anticipated the rest of our meal! (I would order the soup for lunch any day!) My husband had the veal and I had the chicken with pesto and curry. The sauces were amazing and definitely made the meal! We had the layered vegetables with cheese as our side and were not disappointed. Each bite brought another comment as to its deliciousness. We decided to have the volcan au chocolat for dessert. We were warned that it would take 20 minutes to cook and we were happy to sit and talk while waiting knowing that it would be worth it. The vanilla milk sauce displayed a whimsical swirl of chocolate in the shape of a heart flower and more chocolate sauce poured out of the cake once cut. It was the kind of dessert that made us want to lick the plate! The portions are not big, but they are very satisfying. We left satiated with our delighted palates. We came here 2 years ago for Father's Day in 2010. I haven't been back since then but my parents have and give it good marks for the time they have been. Service was good and the food was great. I think the only problem we had out of our 7 meals was one person ordered the hicken Cordon Bleu and the bottom was burned. It happens and but other than that the meal and experience was great. I will have to take my wife back sometime to see how things have changed. Something different in Ridgecrest other than the typical burger joint. read more

Ridgecrest is lucky. It has Mon Reve. Ridgecrest does not deserve Mon Reve, but I will enjoy it whenever I am in Ridgecrest, anyway. I went two nights, one "surf" and one "turf". Both left me gasping for words to describe the exquisite palate presented by Mon Reve. On my "surf" night, I had the coquille l'ancienne, and the sole Normandy, with a French chardonnay. Exquisite scallops (both large and bay) in a creme sauce with cheese over and toasted. I did not expect the sole Normandy to be much more than whitefish -- but, oh, it was. Delicate, perfectly cooked (the center just tender, thin end parts a bit crispy), in a wonderful seafood sauce. Just plain lovely. Tarragon. America has forgotten how to use it -- but Mon Reve is an exemplar. I know the sauces had wonderful flavors in them to which I cannot do justice. But they were so French, and so good. On my "turf" night, I had the French onion soup, the filet, a French merlot, and a tiramisu. The French onion soup was as expected - which is to say very good. A thick oniony broth, with soaked croutons and then toasted cheese over all. The filet I had with greenpepper sauce (the house preparation), and with green beans in garlic butter (the alternative filet preparation). The green beans were quite good, but, in the end, could only be green beans. But the filet -- oh my. Ordered medium rare, it was edible by fork alone. The greenpepper sauce was nice on the meat -- but, the meat -- just perfectly aged, exquisitely tender, and just .... wonderful. The tiramisu was also nice. I stuck to the French wines. They were both hearty and good. I would have preferred a wider choice of French wines, as well as a brandy before or a port afterwards. This is an opportunity for Mon Reve to expand its offerings. Overall, Mon Reve is a gem in the middle of nowhere. The cooking is wonderful, and the help is professional and helpful. Thank you, Hervé. Anyone in Ridgecrest or China Lake must stop here and eat well. Mon Reve does not deserve to have local competition like Taco Bell. It deserves to compete with the best in LA or any large city -- perhaps to compete with the rest of France. But I hope it can stay in Ridgecrest, and provide that city with a wonderfully undeserved meal. read more

FULL DISCLOSURE: I am a French cook. While I do not own a French restaurant, I am an accomplished French (bistro and refined) cook with an experienced palate. I aspire to attain the culinary magic of Thomas Keller, and have long ago left behind the clumsiness of food served at this restaurant. Two stars is being generous. I love that Mon Reve is a small restaurant. I love that it's noisy with enthusiastic guests. The glaring light from the, I'm sure, environmentally friendly bulbs from above, would do nothing to flatter any natural beauty, and created an imposing overhead glare. The mismatched china was very welcomed, and the single warmed Portuguese roll was presented wrapped in a homey kitchen towel. The escargot, which comes from a can wherever you order it, was nice and plump. I loved the heavy influence of the garlic in the dish, and asked for another roll to sop up the garlic essence. Another single roll was brought to the table, this time it was cold. The "butter" surrounding the escargot was oddly lacking a butter flavor. I separated some of the "butter" onto a plate to cool, to observe its behavior. It behaved like oil and not like butter. My wine glass was empty for quite some time. People had been to my table, and made no notice of it or offered to replenish it. Perhaps a woman dining alone isn't seen as worthy of receiving good service. Still, I was looking forward to the veal I ordered. I was hesitant to order the dish in the first place. I like traditional French food with a modern, healthy flare and the dish sounded like it couldn't make up its mind whether it was French or Italian. Since the owner/waiter/chef? recommended the dish, I thought, what the heck! The dish came. I was shocked. The tournedos of veal were highly disappointing since I thought the menu read "cutlet" or "chop". I honestly can't remember, but there were two TINY bits of veal wrapped around a half slice of prosciutto (at best), wrapped around a baton of gruyere, DOUSED in a thick congealed roux that failed to meet the flavor of undiluted Campbell's mushroom soup. The amount of pasty sauce at least quadrupled the amount of veal on the plate and even took up more room on the plate than the green beans. The veal smelled and tasted overly ripe. Perhaps it was the influence of the prosciutto. The green beans were tasty, although over done and, again, I suspect, were coated with oil, not butter. I couldn't eat it, and certainly didn't want to take it with me. I advised the waiter. A concerned owner/waiter/chef? came to the table and appeared to be concerned, but offered no solution, other than that I try the crème brûlée. I had already gone down the rabbit hole this far, so let's go the rest of the way, right? While it was an actual brûlée and not a pudding (thankfully), it wasn't made with vanilla beans and the sugar was blackened, not browned. Admittedly, I am particular, but I wouldn't serve this food to family I didn't like. read more

During Covid you have to go on Facebook to see the limited menu. Only operating Thursday to Saturday evenings. Once you know what you want to order, call and order for either a 5:30 or 7 PM pickup. We normally do not consider French food for dining, but this restaurant is known across the US as one of the best French restaurants. I honestly have never had a bad meal at Mon Reve! I grew up in a predominantly French-Canadaian area so, while the food is different, it still reminds me of home. The staff is friendly and seem to honestly be interested in ensuring their guests have a great dining experience. Though many Ridgecrest natives may flinch at the prices they are fair, and may be low for the quality of the cuisine. You get more than you pay for here. No need to make reservations as that is passé at Mon Reve. Was in Ridgecrest a few weekends ago and called to make reservations. The owner told me they were fully booked through the following week. On a business trip in Ridgecrest where there is not much to see except the view of the southern Sierra to the west at sunrise and sunset. I'm a native Californian and I know this has to be one of the best restaurants in the state. The owner Herve greets you and is a gracious host. The waiter Christian is top notch. The food prepared by Herve's wife is outstanding. It's French, but there is nothing pretentious at all here by any stretch. These are hard working people dedicated to providing you with a wonderful dining experience. I was lucky my two colleagues were adventurous and willing to share. We had the amazing escargot and the exquisite prosciutto salad for appetizers. The homemade mini baguettes were perfect for soaking up the escargot garlic-basil butter. The toasts on the salad were basically like bruschetta but with prosciutto. Yeah. I know. Perfect. We shared three entrees. The vegetarian dish had four different things on it all of which were delicious. Great combination of flavor and textures. I'm not a vegetarian but would be very satisfied with this for myself. The lamb chops were herby and juicy. We ordered it with a side of scalloped potatoes which were the best I've ever had. Well, I've never had better lamb chops either. We also had the sole which was OMG. Not sure but I think the sauce was lemony and creamy. With a side of linguine. After a meal like that dessert is mandatory. Everyone but me ordered profiteroles which were the best I've ever seen. I got a taste and wow. I ordered the apple tart with homemade ice cream. Really really good but I think I'll order the profiteroles next time. Even if I don't have to return on a business trip I'm going to find a way to detour here off the 395.
