We had to change the location of my daughter's wedding from the Chicago suburbs to Northwest Indiana due to covid restrictions in Illinois. Our original florist could not travel to Indiana so he recommended Jen at Monarch. My daughter and I had a zoom meeting with Jen and we shared some pictures and she totally got the vibe we were going for. She was very detailed and specific about the types of flowers that would work. The result was absolutely beautiful. Flowers were perfect and delivered as promised. She even gave us roses for the next morning as it was mother's day. We asked her to construct a wooden framing structure for the ceremony and it was perfect and just had enough flowers to accent but not overpower it. Worst experience ever. Being the budget-conscious bride, I did my due diligence researching florists for the wedding. I wanted fresh bouquets that wouldn't cost me a mortgage payment. That turned out to be more difficult than I originally thought. I turned to a dear friend who had recently married for her recommendation. She told me of Monarch who had done her flowers back when it was at its former location. She said her gorgeous bouquet of yellow roses and white daisies was $60-ish dollars. Upon her recommendation of the excellent quality, value, and customer service, I set up a consultation with Monarch. For my consultation, I was made to wait several minutes before anybody even addressed me. There was a pet dog that was shown more attention in the back room than I was. Eventually I was shown to a table where I had to wait yet again, awkwardly and uncomfortably, presumably so I could look at all their beautiful yet highly overpriced wedding accessories and decor. When a lady came by and asked what I wanted, I told her what I was looking for. We talked about my vision and what I wanted for myself (bridal bouquet, mothers' wristlets, and bridesmaids bouquets). I was then escorted to the register and had my card swiped to find out, WOA!!! What just happened? I just lost $150, and this only a DOWNPAYMENT? I told her I wanted to stay under $300! Why'd she agree? I asked my full total and was given an astronomical sum. I left because I was so upset and bawled all the way home. I called them about a half hour later and asked to have the mothers' wristlets removed at least. They complied. Later I returned to the store and saw the lady I had the consultation with was behind the counter. I asked if I could please talk to the manager about my order without going into detail. She looked at me and said she was the OWNER. Stunned, I explained how I was not at all prepared to pay that sum and why hadn't she kept it under my budget. I explained how she did my friend's bouquet for $60. She denied having ever made a bouquet for price (so was she insinuating that my newly-married friend was a liar?). I asked about maybe getting my money back but she said that, per the back of my receipt, I'd lose like $50 or something. Realizing I couldn't possibly afford to do that, I asked her about switching out the agreed-upon styles for more affordable ones. She seemed very perturbed (this is months before my wedding, so she had time to plan) but agreed. She had me write information on a paper and I said that she could use whatever floral she wanted (wanting to respect her and trust her judgment) so long as she stuck with my colors which were eggplant purple and teal blue. I mentioned I did not want a light purple but an eggplant purple. I also wrote in big letters NO GREEN. I did NOT want greenery or green anything in my bouquet. She asked about some leaves and I said that if they were small and attached to flowers (read: not noticeable) then sure, but otherwise NO GREEN. Now look at my bouquet and see if it has any green? See if the colors match my theme? I did ask for 3 blue dendrobiums which are also pictured. I had originally wanted them to be in my bouquet as the filler, but she priced ridiculously for them. So I ordered just three. They arrived in a box, my photographer snapped a pic, and then the box was forgotten on the floor against the wall, trashed by custodians I assume. Knowing I had wanted blue dendrobiums in my bouquet, it would have been nice if she offered to stick them in my bouquet or find something nice to do with them. When I received my bouquet the morning of my wedding, I cried and was so very close to pulling the plug entirely on carrying flowers at all, but it was less than an hour to showtime and I didn't want to seem like a Bridal B, so I just let it slide. GREEN GREEN GREEN! It seemed like she had pulled a Hulk on my bouquet and wreaked her revenge on me for wanting to be budget conscious. Oh, and I still spent a FORTUNE on my flowers, far more than they were worth. They look nice in pics thanks to my wonderful photographer, but looking at them there is no way they fit the color scheme of my wedding. read more

Monarch is a really cute little gift shop that is tucked away in a pretty sad town with more than one geographical misstep. 1. it is located in a strip of stores that includes a liquor store, dance studio, and convenience store. sad. 2. it's in schererville, in. 3. if you're driving on rt. 30, you're sure to pass on by. with that said though, there are plenty of reasons to stop in if you're in the area. they carry fresh flowers, a small selection of jewelry, interesting greeting cards, and tons of a other gifty items, like plates and candles. this stores definitely caters to the ladies. it's too bad this place had to be so far removed from everything. read more

Having worked as a florist for a good many years, I'm naturally particular when it comes to the creative work of others. I recently attended a wedding in a Chicago restaurant and Monarch had done the floral arrangements. Beautiful, colorful, fresh and creative. Who could ask for more? The icing on the cake, however, was the way they adapted their arrangements to the mother of the bride's ideas and specifications. I was very impressed with their work. I haven't any idea of price as I felt it was rude to ask, but I'm sure they could provide a beautiful arrangement at any price. read more

Not very helpful staff - never followed up after numerous messages left. Understood it was 'busy wedding season' & brushed it off. When it came to the quality of their worked...unfortunately, it was poor as well. The centerpieces for our wedding were bare & lacked luster :( It didn't seem like the staff really cared about providing quality work to their clients...which is a shame when they are a part of creating their special day. What a great florist! Beautiful jewelry in the store. They were very busy with a high school dance flower pick up. But my, what beautiful dance bouquets! They have some lovely wedding decorations on display. Crystal and glass items. I haven't seen decorations like that before. Definitely a florist I would recommend. Very disappointed... After making an appointment for 10am I showed up 5 minutes early...at 10 the doors opened and I was greeted by a lovely employee however she said the designer I was meeting with was not there yet. She sat me down at the table of books tried to help me before I politely gave her a chance out where she went to work on her actual job at 10:10 she came out and said the designer was on her way. Yesterday when I called I had told them I could do an appointment first thing in the morning however I had engagements in the city I needed to get to. At 10:20 we walked out ... Very inconsiderate if the designer was running that late they should have called and let us know they were going to miss the first half of the appointment and made other arrangements..... 5-10 mins is excusable 20 is just rude ... Monarch did the flowers for my daughter's wedding in Chicago Oct. 3, 2015. The flowers were absolutely gorgeous -- just what my daughter ordered -- a beautiful mixture of fall colored flowers along with lots of cascading greens. There was not one problem with any aspect of the order and everything was delivered when they were supposed to be. I can not tell you how many compliments we received on the centerpieces. The tall arrangements were especially beautiful and were quite unique. I brought some of the arrangements home and had them one day short of two weeks!! They lasted that long -- I hated to toss them out. We are so happy we used Monarch (a local establishment for us) and not an overpriced Chicago florist. Rude, expensive, and unreliable product. Flowers where in room temp. with no exposure to freezing or wind, and lasted a day and half before all petals fell off. I don't recommend this place. (Please form your own opinion. This was my own experience) read more
