My 4-year old and I were just walking by yesterday with no intention of getting a haircut, but after stopping to admire the paint on the window, Mona popped out to say hello. She had such an inviting manner, I realized my girl could use a bang trim and thought what the heck she's obviously available! So as Mona gets her settled in a chair, I run back to the car to add another quarter to the meter, I come back to find her requested Frozen on and a promise of "Elsa" braids- which I'm wondering how she'll manage with shorter than shoulder length hair...but somehow she does it with minimal effort After 30-minutes, a lollipop for my girl, and an earful of island gossip for me, I ask how much we owe- $5 she says...what?! She is a valuable resource in the community and if you spend 10 minutes in her chair you'll witness her helping someone out. I've seen it countless times. Over the years my son and I have enjoyed our visits to Mona's hair salon. Once again Mona performed yet, another masterpiece on me. Last month I made the mistake of going to someone else for half price, only because I am on a budget. But trying to save money, I end up spending more. Anyway, this chick who did it for half price gave me an awful hair color. The bottom half was fine because I stopped her before she could get down there and so what she had done on the top, which was supposed to be platinum highlights turned brassy strawberry orange. Ugh! It was horrible. But Mona fixed it. Yayyyyy. I love it, it looks awesome. The highlights are subtle on my back to my original natural brown color. She's not done yet. I go in later this week so she can put the platinum on both cowlicks around my face. Post more later. Thanks Mona. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. This place sucks and the owner Mona is very unprofessional and a compulsive liar. She sticks her nose in other peoples business where she has no place to do so. She loves to gossip about clients behind their back. I had to sit and listen to this woman gossip about people while I got my hair cut if that is what you want to call it. Mona, the owner is very good at her cuts, she is the only one who cuts hair, no other workers! Definitely support her work! Should always call ahead, she is typically booked, but walk in is acceptable. Mona is very down to earth, easy to talk with, never a dull moment and always remember names. I don't know what else to say but, she is a wonderful hair stylist and is certainly concerned with how your final haircut turns out and whether or not she may be able to offer suggstions to maximize the final outcome! I happen to be deaf and rely on a cochlear implant to hear. Ever since my TBI several years ago I haven't made an effort to get a hair cut with the CI pieces attached. I automatically disconnect everything after explaining what type of hair cut I want done and put it back in when it's done. She somehow is able to cut my hair without me removing anything which allows us to actually have a conversation, which is always nice! read more

Mona's is the BOMB. Was walking past my printer and PO box place and she was talking to the printer when I mentioned I was going to get my haircut. She said "I can cut your hair". I was going to the "Barber" nearby because I just didn't want to pay $50 plus tip at the swanky place in town. They always did a good job but I don't need to pay for the chrome and hip music... Barber; hit or miss. Monas asked what I was paying? I told her and she said that's what I charge. Figured I would give it a shot. She did just as good a job as the more expensive place. Plus she's walking distance and I got all kinds of Alameda gossip and lore. She could use some help decorating and with her signage because it's a little cluttered and not so easily visible if your not looking for her. Also does not look so upscale and trendy/flashy so she's probably not drawing a certain crowd. She's a real local character but the proof is in the final product which was excellent. read more
