A chocolate library! I may set a goal of sampling as many of these bars as possible.
Ann W.

My friend's birthday was coming up and I had stopped by here for her gift. Months earlier, we were at the Ferndale location where she purchased the "best chocolate" she had ever had, her words. That sounded like the perfect gift for her, especially since we could not celebrate her birthday last year due to COVID. It was time for a birthday do-over and this would be a nice add to it. The small shop featured 4 distinct zones covering chocolate, cheese, wine and bread, all the key food groups, as far as I'm concerned. By the wall to the right, there were shelves filled with gourmet chocolate bars. A quick scan and I was able to find the chocolate "Duck Shit Dancong Tea", so named for the tea cultivated in Guangdong, China. The tea was so delicious that the farmer gave it an awful name to hide its delicious flavors. Along with that, I selected a few other bars with similar flavor profiles. I also selected a bar for myself. Only one, as I still have a pantry of chocolate bars to consume prior to their best-by dates. Directly opposite the door is a refrigerated case of cheese. There were large wheels and small wedges of cheeses. On the table, in the middle of the store, are bottles of wine and pantry items. I don't know anything about wines and can't speak to the types offered here. Against another wall, there is a refrigerated case of deli meats. I had to try the Wagyu pastrami and at least one of the grilled cheese sandwiches. The Detroit Raclette looked interesting but the Flaming Fig (capocollo, cheddar and fig jam) won out in the end. Cheese pairs so well with jams and honeys that it sounded like the ideal sandwich. While the sandwich took a bit long to heat up, it was worth the wait. Served with an abundance of dried cherries, I loved the spicy flavor (even though it did clear my sinuses). Incidentally, the pastrami was just okay. The counterperson was knowledgeable about the merchandise and worked efficiently between checking out customers and making grilled cheeses.

"I am so sorry to hear that" I do like coming here but gross, those are not cheep and I got a few bits in before pulling a hair out of my mouth and finding another one in the other half...

Virtual family cheese tasting!
Catherine O.

We have enjoyed several cheese and charcuterie platters from Mongers over the past year or so, but last week was our first cheese tasting -- and one geared at families, at that. This was a virtual event due to Covid, so we were pleased to do this within the comfort of our home. We picked up our package of three cheeses (a double cream Brie, a goat Gouda and a Red Leicester), crackers, two chocolate bars and two beverages the day before the event. The selection of cheeses was great and accessible to even the pickiest 5yo boy (i.e., my son). Speaking of my son -- he ate Brie and LIKED it! Incredible! The day of, we plated the cheese, chocolate, and crackers and pulled up the tasting over Zoom. We had SO much fun during the call! Zach and his team are engaging and obviously very knowledgeable about cheese and chocolate. Zach encouraged all participants to use all of their senses when tasting. We had a great discussion for over an hour and it was so cool to see how quickly the kids picked up characteristics of the cheeses and chocolates, even learning the right lingo when talking about cheese. This was such a cool event -- fun for both kids and parents. We highly, highly recommend these virtual tastings! I'm looking forward to the next family tasting, but also want to sign up for the adult tastings with wine pairings. Their stuff is out-of-this-world good, and it was fun to learn about cheese and chocolate with our son!

Wine and cheese anyone? A little shop for wines, cheese and deli. Had their grilled cheese, Detroit Raclette with a side of dried cherries. What a great combo. The grilled cheese was grilled with jalapeños/pickles inside- Can't recall, on loaves of sourdough bread. Just your average grilled cheese with finer ingredients.

Flaming fig

Went to the pop up shop at the Christmas markets. The sandwiches looked amazing on the menu and I've heard some good buzz about the place. The flaming fig sandwich was pretty good - I wish that the bread could be thicker and the cheese would've been melted more. The employees in the pop-up shop were incredibly nice. Overall, would try again in the regular shop!

I read or saw something about this place and happened to be on Cass and stopped in. WOW! It was more than I expected. I was offered a taste of anything from chocolate to cheese to meats. The staff was extremely helpful. I ordered a charcuterie board for a weekend tailgate. I asked for more meat than cheese. When I picked it up, it was BEAUTIFUL...they had built a tray larger than I had ordered because that was the only tray available...just as I turned to leave, I looked down and realized there was no meat! They immediately realized their mistake and built an additional tray that was charcuterie and fruit...top notch establishment. They take great pride in their product and I cannot wait to order again. One thing to know - T do charge a fee for the board that is refunded at the time you bring it back.

The pastries at Sweet Ride looked irresistable so we stopped there. I got a little bit of sticker shock when they told me how much I owed them for one cupcake and one eclair -- $9 (each was $4.50). We probably would've skipped it if we'd realized how pricy they were. The cupcake was incredibly decadent and delicious (encased in a milk chocolate shell, inside were a layer of whipped cream and layer of chocolate ganache atop a moist and delicious cupcake). The custard in the eclair was overly rich and the dessert itself too chilled to be especially enjoyable. On a future visit, I'd split the decadent cupcake two ways and skip the eclair.

I can't get over how much I enjoyed them. I expected my egg yolk ravioli to be runny, as the server indicated, but the folks were fully cooked. Maybe that's the intent and it was just false advertising? My friend enjoyed her butternut pasta dish. The cocktail/mocktail list here is fire. I don't think you can go wrong. I literally cannot WAIT to come back and try more of their menu! I am so impressed with Mad Nice!!

I was expecting it to taste more like the alpine fondue from the melting pot but it sadly did not. It lacked flavor (needs garlic or more wine). For the price of the weinerschnitzel, I would think they could give some carb or veggie on the side. Yes it's a good sized portion, but the presentation looked a little sad. Lots of cocktail options, but I just went with the classic aperol spritz and it was perfect. I definitely will come again on special occasions!

Not only does it satisfy a sweet tooth, it's also a nice pick-me-up. The gelato flight is a great option for sharing. $17 may seem steep, but it's cheaper than ordering multiple individual cups. Of the five flavors I've tried, the pistachio is my favorite. Momento also offers baked goods and sorbet. I've had the lemon and raspberry sorbets, and personally prefer the lemon. While the baked goods are outsourced, the croissant I had was delicious. I've also tried the lemonade. It was too sour for my liking, though I'm hoping it was just an off batch. There are also some savory options, like breakfast sandwiches and paninis, I plan on trying one day. In the few times my family and I have been to Momento, we've always left happy. Gelato isn't especially common in the Metro Detroit area, so having a solid spot like this in one of the city's most happening neighborhoods shouldn't be taken for granted.
