We stopped by this Thai restaurant for lunch when we are at San Clemente. The owner and chef are Thai so the food are authentic. We ordered 5 lunch special and the portion is good and reasonable price. The Satay with fried rice are good. The Pad Thai and egg rolls are yummy too. Green Curry is delicious. The seafood noodles soup has good broth and seafood, but the flat rice noodles is a bit hard, not soft enough. Will definitely try again when I am in the area. read more

Thai it. You'll like it! (Sorry, I couldn't help myself.) How it all started: I was craving mango sticky rice. And yellow curry. Also, Thai iced tea. I am a bit of a mango sticky rice fanatic and compare all versions that I try to Sutha Thai Kitchen in Tustin. Unfortunately, I no longer work in that area and it is a bit of a drive. Which led me to Yelp. Thai Food? Check. Minimum 4 stars? Check. Close to my house? Check. Mango sticky rice? Check. Sold! I probably would have rated 5 stars but for the prices and serving sizes. I do understand that they are in a pricey location (the main drag on Del Mar in SC), but they also don't include rice with the entrees. Come on folks, rice is cheap! So am I, apparently. I steamed my own at home just on principle. My take-out bill came to $25.03 for 1 order of yellow curry (chicken and potato), 1 order of mango sticky rice, and 1 Thai iced tea. (You can sub coconut milk for condensed btw, but I did not.) If Mongkut doesn't ask you, ask them about spice levels. You can select between a scale of 1-4: 1 - Mild 2 - Medium 3 - Hot 4 - Dang Hot (The "dang" is mine, not theirs. ) The yellow curry (see pic): It only filled the to-go container about halfway, but it was enough for 2 average eaters, maybe 3. The sauce was thin but flavorful. I ordered the curry on a level of 1, which had a subtle heat that wasn't apparent at first. Next time I'll try a 2. (It bodes well that there will be a next time.) Only 5 pieces of potato but a decent amount of chicken which was tender and not overcooked. Potatoes are cheaper than chicken, so well done. The Thai Iced tea: Sweet but strong. (I like it strong.) I may add a bit of plain black tea to it, just to cut the sweetness, but it is the best I've found in South County, so far. They waited to make it until I arrived at the restaurant, so it wasn't diluted. Smart. The mango sticky rice (see pic) aka "Kao Neao Na Ma-Muang (gluten-free) Sticky rice sweetened with coconut milk & topped with fresh sliced mango": The rice was indeed sticky and could actually have been picked up in a sheet without falling apart. It came with a sauce that was mostly sweet but hinted at exotic flavors. I'd like more of the coconut essence personally. I thought the amount of side sauce looked skimpy but then ended up not using all of it, so what do I know?! Sutha Thai sprinkles sesame seeds on their mango sticky rice and I missed the bonus flavor and crunch. However, the mango was perfect, ripe, and voluptuous. It will definitely satisfy my cravings. It could be shared between 2 people, as long as I am not one of those people. I'm not sharing! =) The gal that took my money/brought my food was polite and thanked me. Note that Mongkut is closed for a couple of hours between lunch and dinner, so plan accordingly. On the bright side they are open 7 days a week and offer online ordering. read more

My favorite Thai place in town is Thai by the Sea on PCH and Third. For whatever reason we decided to try a different Thai place. We ended up here because of the pretty good reviews. Service was great! High chairs are really nice, too. Their appetizer selection is WAY better than Thai by the Sea, but we weren't too hungry so we stuck with just 2 entrees. I ordered this noodle dish with chinese sausage. I can't remember the name off hand! It was really good and tasted A LOT like pad see ew. However, the beef panang wasn't all that interesting. Actually I had leftovers and the noodles were even better the second day. Service was nice but there was only one gal for a Sunday afternoon which didn't seem like there were enough servers. I've been coming to Mongkut Thai for years, ever since it opened on Del Mar in San Clemente clear back in 1986. You see a lot of restaurants come and go on Del Mar, but they are the one consistent restaurant on this street. It's ran by an adorable husband and wife team. They are wonderful folks and go out of their way to make sure you're having a great dining experience. They don't cheat on anything. You always get plenty of what ever it is you order. Thai spring rolls are too die for, their salads as well and so is everything else they serve up. Don't let this tiny little place fool you, if you do you'll be missing out on the best Thai food between San Clemente and Belmont shores, Long Beach. The owner has nailed down all her sauces to perfection. You will love this place as much as I do and I'm very particular about my Thai food. The owners are the best people ever, they work so hard. I love the coconut seafood soup at Mongkut Thai. It has mussels, shrimp, salmon, calamari, cabbage, crab, scallops and the coconut broth is so good! Likely our favorite Thai spot in San Clemente. Family-owned, with mostly nice service and a solid vegan and gluten-free set of menu options. We love the white mushrooms/fungus they serve in some salads and stir fries and our absolute favorite is the golden curry. We typically go for dinner but recently had lunch and were pleasantly surprised that there are good veggies options with salad and soup that we can eat as well. I'd like to start by saying that the servers are very sweet & I really want to like this place. I have been here twice and unfortunately got super sick right after eating the last time (and I didn't eat anything weird that day or the days leading up to it + I don't have a particularly delicate stomach..) I really love Thai food and there was something lacking with the combination of flavors in each of the dishes. The food is just very very bland. The meat was overcooked in every dish. Even the most basic dishes like wonton soup and fried rice were completely lacking flavor. Both times we've come, we've tried a bunch of different dishes because we were with larger parties and we haven't found one we're a fan of yet. I know we've tried the Jewel of Asia Curry, Green Curry, Jade Garden, Fried Rice, Golden Vegetable Curry, Drunken Noodles, Jade Garden Rice, Wonton Soup, Thai Wraps, and the Thai Spring Rolls. This is an OK place, I felt like a vegetarian dish tonight and something simple. So, it turns out that the Pad Thai and the Tom Yum soup was a really good choice. The vegetarian version of the Pad Thai was a little more sour than I expected, but still fairly flavorful. It was a simple fare, but good enough for the night. The soup was also pretty good, they did put a lot more vegetables in it than I would've expected, or broth would've been better in my opinion, but it was not bad. This place is great for a vegetarian! While separate menu which is fantastic! They can also make a Thai iced tea with coconut milk, which was amazing. The vegetarian spring rolls were unique and really good. Not the typical filling, these have tofu in them and the wrapping was light and crispy. I had the paradise curry, which is a pineapple, cashew nut, tofu red curry. Only reason not 5 stars was the curry wasn't quite what I expected. It was rather thin and not spicy at all.
