I am not sure if this place was under staffed tonight but service was slow. It took them forever to take our order then three of our dishes were made wrong. We asked for no onions in our lettuce wraps (came with onions), tofu in our fried rice (had no tofu), and scallops on my curry (they added tofu and scallops to my curry) and the scallops were undercooked, taw, and cold in the middle. Since 1986, restaurant is a San Clemente gem. The staff and the owner, Donnie, are awesome. For starters, I always go with the golden spring rolls and Thai wraps. Our favorite bites are the Panang curry (4 heat), pad Thai and drunken noodles. The Amethyst forest and beef Jade garden are definitely worth a try. read more

The best Thai in San Clemente - every dish hits the spot and is authentic. They'll make it to order and if you want gluten or vegetarian options they offer them. It's a good amount of meat and vegetables but if you do end up adding, let's say broccoli to a dish beware that they will charge you $2 and not tell you about it for the average amount of broccoli they added (this isn't avocados!!) which was kind of annoying but oh well?! During this covid period, to keep ourselves entertained and sane - once a month we travel to a far away land with friends via food. This month was a virtual trip to Thailand, sans protests, via a Mongkut banquet of take out food eaten in an outdoor park. Our menu included Angel's Pleasure, Satay, Golden floats, Tom Kha kai-pot, Pad kee Mao pork, Pad thai, Beef massaman, and Mango sticky rice. Our food preparations were simple - pay the cashier and carry. Everyone in our party of six enjoyed all of these menu items. This place is great!! Not only do they have delicious food, but their customer service is wonderful. I ordered food from DoorDash from this restaurant, and the Dasher picked up someone else's food and dropped off the wrong food to me. Since DoorDash was no help, I called the restaurant to see if there's anything they could do, they remade my order, and the guy I talked to on the phone that night, he might've been the owner, drove the food to my house himself within 20 minutes of me calling. He wouldn't even accept a tip from me. He said he just wanted to make sure I got my dinner. I haven't seen Customer Service like that in a long time, if ever!! Thank goodnes for Yelp! I was craving some good, comforting Thai food on my drive home from SD and since there was late night traffic, decided to exit and see what Thai places were nearby. Decor inside is nice and staff was very warm and friendly. They have a vegetarian page at the end of the menu, which makes ordering SO much easier. We tried the emerald curry with added steamed tofu, which was very good -- could have been spicier (they didn't ask how spicy we wanted it), and the summer noodle dish, which had lots of veggies and added fried tofu. The noodle dish was to my taste, should have ordered pad see ew or pad thai like I normally do instead. I think this specific noodle dish had a thick gravy sauce that didn't wow me. read more

as a local resident, i am disappointed in writing this review. i am hopeful this will remind this local longtime business of how great they used to be and work towards getting back to that. i ordered takeout this evening and like the past few times, the experience was the same. order was not ready, almost 20mins past the spoken time. secondly, the 1 of 2 dishes ordered were not as per the menu. missing the dried curry powder (which happened last time i ordered) and then had 1 shrimp. per the menus, the protein (in listed order) was shrimp, chicken, Portuguese sausage ~ I thought there was zero shrimp and i finally uncovered ONE shrimp. how can you list shrimp and only include one? this dish has gone up in price over the past few years, but that does not mean the quality and portion size should go down, nor be missing the first ingredient listed. hope this review leads to better quality checks. read more

The entree's saved the night! We got carry out this evening and went with a double order of the Rangoons for the family, boy was that a bad idea. It could have been an off night, but what makes me think that it's not their specialty is that both orders were terrible. They were more like flaky potato chips than any type of Rangoon. I came here with some vegetarian friends of mine who are regulars, so I've only had the meat-free options here. I'll not comment much on the service which was good, but since my friends know the owner, may not be typical. It's a smallish and very popular place, so make a reservation on a weekend evening. The highlights included the stir fried eggplant, a dish I usually do not like but was quite good here with eggplant which was not too soft, and the Dazzling Green Crystal salad with nice big tart flavors marrying well with shredded chayote. The Drunken Noodles were quite good too, though this is a dish done well at basically every Thai joint. The only slight bummer were the Veggie Floats, which were little bite sized pastry shells with a bean curd and vegetable filling - the shells were a little dense, my friends tell me that they've had this dish better here before. Prices were about right for being on the main dining drag in San Clemente. Overall, not a bad choice and particularly good for vegetarians as half their menu accommodates them. read more

Ok. The first time we ordered the food was ok. The portion was smaller but the pad Thai wasn't loaded with bean sprouts and the flavor was ok. Downside - the don't have cream cheese won tons. The second time we ordered the food was horrible and the portion size was still on the smaller side. The meal was greasy/oily and felt gritty. I think they forgot to add the peanut sauce because everything was very bland. The chicken was over cooked and very gritty and the noodles were oil. I ordered the Fried wontons and that's what I got - fried, oily rice paper with little to no filling. We won't order take from here again it was that bad. The Appetizers combination were okay because some were good but the chicken satay is nothing special and the pork ribs were lacking tenderness. My husband and I loved the crying tiger because the steak was well seasoned. The Tom yum soup was a bit unique for us since it was not spicy at all. No chili or anything to make it spicy. The pad see iw was tasty and we were able to request to cook the vegetables in it a little longer to make it soft enough for our baby. They also have a high chair in case you are wondering. We came here as a halfway point to celebrate a birthday with people from LA and SD. While we appreciated the covered outdoor seating area, friendly service and parking around back, the food was unfortunately not great. We are spoiled by fantastic Thai food in SD so our expectations are high. We had the Thai tea, chicken satay, mee krob, Kai Kua noodles, yellow curry with chicken and a pork stir fry dish (can't remember the name). The only two good ones were the kua noodles and the pork stir fry. Every other dish was very bland, the chicken satay had zero seasoning and the peanut sauce was watery. The mee krob was just overwhelmingly sweet and the curry had too much coconut milk and was a very pale yellow (should be much darker yellow for higher quality spices). We ate lunch here today. We ordered Wonton soup and Chicken Satay to share. I'm sorry, but there was just no taste to these two dishes. When we have had Chicken Satay elsewhere, there has always been a very tasty peanut sauce. This sauce was thin and tasteless, and hardly tasted like peanut sauce. The wonton soup was also tasteless. Yelp fell flat on its face on this one. Took a party of 8 for a business lunch. I arrived late and the waitress ignored me. I had to leave the table to ask for a menu and order a drink. After lunch I asked the group what they did to piss off the waitress and they said 'nothing, she is just not in a happy place in her life.' My pad thai was bland with rubbery shrimp. Very authentic Thai food and some of the best that I've had in SC so far. I love Thai food! When I first moved to SC I went on a hunt for the best local Thai restaurants and really didn't find one in SC that I was over the top with. (One more to try) I'll create a List showing them in order once I'm through. Truth be told, I'm trying to replace the one we left in Ladera Ranch Diho Siam. So let's get back to Mongkut! LOCATION & ATMOSPHERE (Rating 3) This place is small and dingy in my opinion. I'm all for a hole in the wall, but a little updating is needed if you ask me. SERVICE (Rating 4) We came tonight with a group of 7, so we weren't exactly an easy table to handle but the service was pretty good and the waitress was nice and had a nice sense of humor and patience as we were all talking for quite a while. TOM KHA KAI SOUP (Rating 3.75) So this is my favorite Thai soup and Mongkut did a pretty good job with it. It's a coconut broth, cabbage, cilantro, green onion and chicken soup. The balance of sweetness and spice was nicely done but the chicken was a bit over done which you find allot in soups like these. I would order it again though. #34 YELLOW CURRY (Rating 4.25) This is an Indian influenced curry with chicken and potatoes. At many restaurants, the potato can consume the texture and drain the flavor from of the curry. Not so, tonight. I was extremely happy with the flavors and the size of this dish as well as the thickness of the sauce. (It was a between a thin to medium thickness) There was also plenty of sauce to use with the rice which always makes me happy. #36 GREEN CURRY (Rating 4.5) This comprises green curry, chicken, eggplant & Thai basil. The thickness of the sauce was a little thin for my pallet but the flavor rocks! The eggplant was perfectly cooked and the thai basil sets the spice level low but you know it's there.
