This chains seems to be the only place we visit as we drive to and from Champaign to visit our son in college. Regardless of the location, the set up seems the same. Entry way and walk up counter to order, seats to wait to take out or sit in the restaurant and they bring the food to you. I have never ordered the pizza myself as I'm lactose intolerant. My wife loves the pizza. I've had the wings and breadsticks. I think at one time I may even have had a slice. It's decent pizza for a rest stop. The restaurants are homey and are a lot nicer than the fast food options along the way. This location is listed to get off the highway at a certain exit. It is the wrong one as it's the long way to the restaurant. Lots of weird turns and alley-like roads to get here. Though, of all the locations we've stopped at, the Kankakee location was the nicest. It's a good place to stop on the way somewhere else and in case you live nearby, it's a decent place to grab a slice, eat some decent wings, and have a nice, casual meal. read more

This is for a different type of people. This is for the people that have an utmost respect and appreciation for a good thin crust pizza. I can never get enough of their Family Pleaser. Salad, a 2 liter and a medium pizza. It's the perfect amount of food and oh so good. (You can also find coupons on their Facebook page, in your mail if you're local or on their website.) Us locals will recommend that you get some of the sweet red salad dressing and the creamy italian dressing and mix them. That's how us Kankakeeans roll. Did I mention I love their thin-crust pizza? Actually not at all bad for a Chicago area pizza place that doesn't serve deep dish. We brought a large group here and they pulled us up enough tables and chairs for the full group. We had excellent attention from Brittany the entire time, who checked up on all of our food and drinks. I had the thin crust small, and it was the right size for lunch. The crust is super thin and crispy without being burnt, and in fact the pie was cooked perfectly. I was kept plied with half-sweet half-unsweet tea with no ice - very few waitstaff remember the no ice part or even get the half and half consistent each time, let alone when there's a group of over a dozen people. I recently went to this location with my girlfriend and her mom, only because the other location was so crowded. I'm not a big thin crust fan, but it's pizza so I always have an open mind about it. Chicago is famous for their pizza, and I can only assume the reason this place is successful and is a chain is because of little kids and budget meals. When we were seated in a booth, the seats had lettuce on them, no doubt from a hurried cleaning job as busy as it was. The waitress was nice enough, but our dinnerware and plates had to be exchanged because there was food on them. We got the 'Family Pleaser' which is apparently the 'thing' to get. There was hardly anything pleasing about it. The salad was a translucent assortment of "lettuce". Their special sauce was nothing more than French dressing that was too sweet for my taste. Finally the pizza arrived. Really I was most impressed by the pizza. It was thin (meh) but the toppings and sauce combined to make a pizza that for this thin crust hater was really quite good. Overall the experience was mediocre at best. Next time, if they have delivery or carryout I'd much prefer that. For the price and nostalgia (if Monical's was what you grew up with) this place is alright. But for the average guest they'll find quality and service definitely lacking. read more

This is my absolute favorite pizza! I moved out of the area and I have been dreaming of this pizza. If only they would open some locations Chicago, they would have a huge following of Peoria, Kankakee, & Champaign transplants. This pizza is ultra thin, crispy with a spicy sauce. Since I grew up in Chicago and only lived in Kankakee area for 10 years, I didn't grow up putting Sweet-N-Tart dressing on the pizza. It's not my thing. I have 2 favorite pizzas here, either a sausage pizza or their Happy Heart pizza. I think you had to have grown up around one of these to actually like it as an adult. I give it 2 stars because kids do like it. The pizza is terribly juvenile tasting, and the toppings are rarely cooked properly. The crust is comparable to a generic brand frozen pizza. I don't know what the big fuss about this pizza. I got a "pick up" for a large one recently and my boyfriend thought it was delicious and I thought it was terrible. Paper thin crust, (which is fine) barely any sauce and lightly cheesed. Once again it tasted like cardboard to me. It must have cost them less than 50 whole cents to make it, but cost us $20. I was working in the area and hungry and this was the place near me. I had the thin vegetarian pizza and it was ok nothing to rave about. I'm from Chicago "Pizza Capital" so of course I'm judging what I just ate based on my pizza experiences in the Windy City. It's marginal pizza and the pasta dishes are cheap imitations of the originals. Not inexpensive either. The pizza often has a "burnt" taste because of the cornmeal that is applied to the bottom of the crust. Never had a bad experience with the service or anything. Staff is friendly. My issue is with the pizza, just not my style. This place has a predominantly local following i.e. you only really like this food if you grew up on it. I'm a Chicago transplant so I prefer the deep dish or stuffed style of pizza. Monicals is ultra thin which can be OK if flavorful, but the sauce is lackluster and sparing, the cheese is greasy, and the crust too thin to possess any discernible flavor. It basically reminds me of what a Tombstone pizza would be if ate fresh and never fozen. A telltale sign of the pizza's shortcomings: everyone raves how good it is when topped with french dressing... A truly good pizza would not need such an outlandish addition to give it good flavor. The dressing itself is very good , but that's like saying you don't like a places chili, but they have an excellent butternut squash puree that they put on it. I agree the pizza tastes better with either dressing drizzled on top. I also understand the sentimental value of after high school football game outings etc. But can't you see? This is the crux of the problem. Fair people of Kankakee, I beseech you, scale the imaginary walls that imprison your perception of quality pizza. You don't have to go far, Sammy's, Aurelio's. But you can if you want to, Lou Malnati's, Gino's, Due's etc. Be honest, it's ok. Monical's doesn't fair well in comparison. Not as tasty and kind of pricey for what you get. It's ok to slop that dressing on it to somehow infuse flavor into it. I get it. Lets call it something else besides pizza then and I'm on your team. I ordered carry out once and halfway into my eighth piece I realized that the cheese melted to the cardboard container. I assure you with enough dressing you can't tell the difference.
