I guess they have a lot of sauce so maybe that's their intention but I want a flavorful meat that I dip a bit into the sauce for more or different flavor not one that is so dependent on the sauce to taste ok. Food was amazing, and shh I'm not even a "BBQ person"! I I got the smoked turkey (kids meal) which was surprisingly filling and came with a lot of meat packed on a slider. It also came with a side--I got the yummy potato salad. My boyfriend got the pulled pork sandwich and Gouda Mac n' cheese...delicious! They make their own pickles...delicious! They have a variety of yummy sauces. My favorite was the Alabama white! Inside, they have a bar and seating area. They have huge selection of whiskey and a decent amount of draft beer. This place hit the spot. Came here after a hike and we were all pretty hungry. We ordered The Piglet which came with a bit of everything - 1/4 lb Pulled Pork, 1/4 lb Brisket, 1/4 lb Pastrami, 1/4 lb Burnt Ends, 1 Chicken Quarter, 1/2 Rack of Ribs, 1/2 Texas Hot Link, 1/2 Bacon on a Stick & 4 slices of Texas Toast as well as pickles, slaw and jalapenos. The best things were the ribs, chicken and the pastrami. Brisket was a tad on the dry side but still great but the burnt ends were definitely tough and drier than the desert. We visited Monk's after going on a little winery hopping tour, and were somewhat disappointed. We got the brisket and pulled chicken (1/4 lb each), which were not very tender and somewhat dry. The sides (beans, smashed potatoes, corn bread with custard filling) were much better, although the beans were a little too sweet and I couldn't eat them after a while. While visiting the area on vacation, we stopped at Monk's BBQ. Upon entering the restaurant with my family, we were greeted by the owner, who was very kind and engaging throughout the meal. Food You place your order at the counter from their menu. They have all of your standard BBQ meats and some variations on sides. We went with the Piglet, which included chicken, brisket, burnt ends, pastrami, ribs, and hot links. We got smoked Gouda Mac & cheese, dirty rice, and corn breads for the sides. The meats were all pretty good. The chicken and pastrami were my two favorite cuts. The Mac & cheese was my favorite thing on the menu. The Gouda really added something to it. We split and apple cobbler at the end that was delicious. 3.5/5 Service Staff was kind and courteous throughout. The owner made the experience even more enjoyable. He brought my daughter a lollipop and crackers for my son when he would come check on us. He brought treats for our dog too. 5/5 Ambiance Monk's had your typical feel of a BBQ restaurant. It wasn't nearly as Smokey on the inside as other places, but still shared similar layout. They had a cool BBQ class setup on the counter and called them utters. Over the weekend we adventured out to monks BBQ. Overall the service was great the atmosphere was welcoming and plenty of space outside downstairs and upstairs. We got the boss platter which is about $135 but it's worth it because it's a lot of meat you also get coleslaw jalapenos and pickles plenty of it. The coleslaw is mainly radish but that's okay. Such disappointing customer service. I tried to share my experience and concerns, but no one seemed interested in listening. The manager on duty went into the back instead of speaking with me and hid which only made the situation more frustrating. I explained that I've heard from other locals (including myself) who have stopped coming because of the unwelcoming, "mean girl" attitude at the front counter. It creates an uncomfortable atmosphere that takes away from the dining experience. To make matters worse, the owner, Brian, is no longer local, so there doesn't seem to be anyone available to address legitimate customer concerns. We ordered and then waited for 30 minutes. The table next to us ordered just after us and hadn't gotten their food so up until the 30 minute mark, we figured it was just a slow kitchen. After 30 minutes, went and checked in and they said they had an Internet blip and a couple orders were lost. They were going to put them back through. The people next to us had their order come out in about 4-5 minutes. We waited another five minutes until a large group that just ordered 10 minutes earlier was getting their food. We went back to check with them and they said they couldn't find our order so we gave them the receipt. Our food then came out within 10 minutes. I had the pork with cornbread, beans, and potato salad along with some banana pudding. The pork had a lot of skin and fat. The cornbread wasn't cooked in the middle (I now see that they feature a custard style cornbread so that's what appears to be not cooked all the way). We drove over an hour to get here and we got the Pig platter so we could try everything- Ribs-Fall of the bone but very thin and not as meaty as expected. Lots of smoke bc they were so thin. You basically order at a station close to the entrance and they give you a number card to be placed at the table of your choice. They bring the food out to your table and verify that all looks good. The highlights of the menu is the pastrami and the corn bread. The pastrami is so lean, moist and tasty. The corn bread can almost be considered a dessert as there's a layer of custard baked in so it's not your typical dry corn bread. This is moist, slightly sweet and so good. There are good size parking lot as well. The restaurant is decorated as you would expect a typical BBQ place would look. My fiancée and I joined my family for a birthday dinner here the other night. The food did not disappoint as per usual. We ended up ordering the Whole Hog since there were a bunch of us (I think 14 people?). We also had some people order sandwiches and other things as well. The bbq was on point. The ribs specifically had a little sweetness from the rub used on them. The burnt ends were phenomenal and I highly recommend them. They were saucy and tender and totally worth it. The Mac and cheese is the best side in my opinion. But the Cole slaw is highly underrated if you ask me. It's more of a vinegar base versus mayo and I liked it a lot. The service here is friendly and quick. We ordered as much as we did and it still came out within about 10 mins. Every year, my wife and I travel from Hedgesville, WV to Wolf Trap to see The Avett Brothers--it's become a tradition. To complete the experience, we always hunt for a great BBQ spot along the way. This year, a YouTube recommendation led us to Monk's BBQ in Purcellville. We were drawn in by the promise of pulled chicken and Carolina flavor, but unfortunately, that's where the excitement ended. My wife ordered the pulled chicken platter for $14.99, and I went with the pulled pork for $13.99. Both meats were dry and lacked any hint of the smoky flavor we associate with true North Carolina-style barbecue. The sauces didn't help much either--none came close to the vinegar-forward authenticity of Lexington BBQ. We both opted for cornbread over the included potato roll, only to be surprised with an additional $1 charge each. While the cornbread ended up being the high point of the meal--moist and warm--it still felt like an unnecessary nickel-and-dime moment. For sides, my wife tried the Gouda mac and cheese. While the cheese sauce was creamy, the choice of noodles made it awkward to eat, and it lacked the browned crust or smoky undertones you'd hope for at a BBQ joint. I picked the vinegar slaw, which was a watery disappointment. Most of the vinegar had settled at the bottom, and the cabbage itself was limp and bland. I also ordered the pickles--more accurately a cucumber salad--for $3.99, and while the ingredients looked fresh, the salt content was so overwhelming it ruined the dish. We rounded things out with two drinks at $2.75 each. The total came to just over $49 including tax and tip, which felt steep given the overall quality. In short, we left unsatisfied and won't be returning on our next trip to Wolf Trap. Upon parking and exiting our vehicle, we were quickly greeted by an older gentleman who was tending to the grounds outside saying "Welcome to Monk's! Enjoy your dinner!" and we knew we were in for a welcoming experience. We went with the Piglet and added macaroni and cheese and cornbread as we had four adults and two children sharing and it was plenty of food. The rustic decor fit the vibe of a kind of backwoods BBQ joint. Our food was delivered quickly to soon also be visited at our table by the same friendly man offering a lollipop and cookie to my kids. Yelp doesn't lie, this place lives up to the hype as the best BBQ meat in the area. We got there mid-afternoon on Saturday and were able to get a table on the patio but they have indoor seating (including a full bar) and outdoor seating. Service is very friendly and efficient, you order at a stand when you walk in and we got our food very quickly. The pulled pork was excellent and was a large portion. I enjoyed their various sauces, especially the raspberry Chipotle, but their meat is so good it doesn't even really need sauce. Sides were tasty too, mushrooms were interesting and not some thing I've seen elsewhere. Collards were just right and I enjoyed the non-mayo cole slaw. Finally the cornbread was interesting and almost like a dessert as it had a custard like consistency in the middle. The meat is of course the star here but the sides aren't bad either. The ribs were super tender, fall off the bone, but lacked any real flavor. The smoked mac-n-cheese was anything but smokey and seemed a bit out of the box. Brisket was the same, lacking smoke and flavor. My son got the burger, he said he liked it, but he's pretty young and we didn't try. The major disappointment was my burnt ends. This is something I don't see often on the menu around local bbq restaurants and was excited to get them. Sadly they were like the other meats, lacking any real flavor and drenched in this sweet and spicy sauce that to me just masqueraded the "non-burnt" ends. If you want really great bbq there's some other really good options in the Winchester area.
