Dude that works the register on Saturday mornings (today) is a super nice human being. I was searching for an odd size tire for an old Ford Escape and while Monro didn't have the tires I was looking for, and that could've been the end of my experience at this location - but sitting in my car trying to find the tires anywhere the gentleman that I spoke with at the register, came out to my car with some notes written on a piece of paper and gave me advice where I might find exactly what I needed. He was right. I found what I needed in a pinch and I wouldn't have been able to have accomplished that after speaking with five or six different tire shops if he hadn't helped me. I purchased a Groupon for an oil change (on Nov 30, 2024) at this Newton location. When I went in for my oil change they said that they were busy and that I would have to call and make an appointment for another time. When I called to make an appointment they explained that I would need to drop my car off for most of the day (completely impractical and requires a ride or taxi for drop-off and pickup) for an oil change. They also shared that there would be an additional "gotcha" fee (in addition to the 69.99 for a fully synthetic oil change, which was not highlighted in the Groupon). I had my oil change done elsewhere figuring that I would plan and schedule it for this location the next time I was due for an oil change, however when I checked the Groupon it had expired on January 29, 2025, only two months after it was purchased (Groupons for services like these are typically valid for 1 year). If you are in need of an oil change, I would save yourself the hassle and give this business a very wide berth. read more

My dad went took my car there for an oil change and what the guy said/complained about is not acceptable. Yes we are aware that our car is old and it has problems here and there, but the point is we are there to get an oil change. He gave my dad a huge attitude and then said next time don't bring your car here for an oil change. It's not like this guy is new either because my dad remembers it's the same guy that gave him problems before. Seriously, what kind of people do they hire that tells customers don't come back? But we'll take that advice. I am highly disappointed with this Monro location. I thought I had found a reputable and trustworthy garage for my car, and had been coming here for regular maintenance for a couple years. Exactly one year ago I had them do my shocks and struts. Was up-sold to the better model, thinking hey, at least they'll last longer, and be better for my car... etc. Fast forward one year, I'm getting my vehicle inspected at the dealership and I'm told one of the shocks was installed upside down and has been leaking. This was upsetting to learn, not only because of the amount of money I spent for the parts to be installed incorrectly, but also because of the damage it could have been causing to my car for a whole year. Also, I had been in for other services at Monro after the installation of the shocks, and they apparently overlooked this problem at that time as well. I brought my vehicle back to Monro immediately after learning of the mistake. The manager first insisted that it's not even possible for the shocks to be installed upside down. So, in disbelief, he went out and peaked under the car, only to come back and say, "wow, I don't know how that happened. But it's only cosmetic, it doesn't really matter if it's upside down." I don't care if it's cosmetic. If I'm paying over a grand for a service, I'd like my parts installed the way they were meant to be installed, not the careless, open-to-interpretation-way the technician believes they can be installed. Please just put them right-side up. Point is, we didn't get one "sorry." we walked out feeling as though we were inconveniencing them for having to fix their mistake. I will never go back to this place again. It seems you can never find a trustworthy car repair shop anywhere...it just feels like you always end up getting screwed. I had a coupon for a $12.99 oil change for Munro - of course I was gonna use it. I did the online appointment thing, but never heard back (granted I wanted an appt within 48 hours), so I just called. On the phone and in-store I talked to Marcus, who was awesome. Although I wanted an appointment at probably the worst part of the day (right after work), he told me to come by and they would get it done. They were great when I got there - no pressure to buy anything, although he did let me know what I will want to replace soon. None of that "well, this is broken, too, so we will fix it for you for the low price of $600 and your left leg." It did take longer than the "express" places (Valvoline, etc...), but the price is great, and I'm on a tight budget, so I didn't mind. All in all, it was a pleasant experience. If you're not looking for the quick in-and-out option, and you live around Newton, I would recommend these guys. I know I'll be back when I need my next oil change. Please never entertain such people. Never ever go there. I went with a coupon for 14.99 for an oil change. It was displayed in front also but the most arrogant guy told me that nobody can work for such low price and charged me 32.55 with tax. That was fine, i wouldn't have bothered but I think he retaliated for asking for the discount he is advertising which he didn't give. My fog light wires were cut and door lock from inside were broken. I have never taken anywhere else who would have cut the wires? Can I prove he did it, may be not easily but it happened only after that. Very rude, mean behaviour by the rough looking guy. Never ever i will go there. read more

These folks are total liars. Save your money. I paid to have my wheel bearing replaced. Several months later and several hundreds of dollars later I had to have them redone. There warranty is only 3 months long, which is pretty bad for the industry. They also quoted me a $700 repair for my AC. All I actually needed was a recharge and 2 summers since still have cool AC with out the $700 repair. Save your money and stay away! read more

This station is in absolutely no way to be trusted! I've literally had the manager here completely lie to me about the availability and pricing of parts for my car (and I see they took down the original Yelp account to get rid of all the other hideous reviews for this place, including my last one). One of my shocks needed replacing for my Honda (as well as some other repairs I needed). He also wanted to do more unnecessary work on it which I declined seeing that I was already spending enough money already. I was already using perfectly good after-market shocks that were half the price of Honda's. After I dropped off my car, the manager Nate called me to say the after-market ones werent' available any longer and that I HAD to get the more expensive Honda ones ($200 more). I said "why aren't they made anymore?" He didn't know. I go to pick up my car, I look on my receipt: lo and behold, there was the after market shocks listed. When I asked him about the Honda shocks, he said "are you kidding? meaning why would he get the more expensive ones?" Like our conversation never happened. Did this save me a cent? Of course not - the difference in price was used on the adjustments that I declined that he admitted earlier weren't necessary! I fully regret not throwing a complete sh$%fit in the store right then and there over this - I was just too relieved to get my car back. Thank goodness for Yelp. Another time they charged me $40 for an oil change when right outside their door they had a sign for $19.99 oil changes. Their excuse was they don't really do oil changes there, just once in a while since I'm a repeat customer. WHAT???!! Then what's the sign for? Do not go to Monro Brake and Muffler in Newton. Negative reviews are spot on. When I asked how long it would take for tire installation with wheel alignment, I was told it may take up to 2 hours, maybe more. They hadn't even started after 2.5 hours. I then asked how long it would take and he said maybe another 2.5 hours depending on how bad the alignment was. I was mad and said what happened to the 2 hour estimate and he insisted he would never tell someone that. Not true. I cancelled the alignment and in all it still took 4.75 hours for a tire installation. I've never had tire installation take more than an hour and a half and that was without an appointment. I made my appointment 2 weeks upfront. Made no accommodation even when he could I see I was with my 5 yr old. They had a posting for 15.99 oil change, but my car ended up costing $48. He quoted that upfront, but I have a feeling no one comes close to the 15.99 price. read more

Fuck this place. I checked online and it said they did inspections. I called and there was no answer not even voicemail. I found another place slightly further from my house and while I was headed there I drove by monroe and saw it was open. I pulled in and patiently waited for someone to acknowledge me. No one was there except another customer. After 10-15 minutes an employee came back and started speaking to me as if we had already conversed. I subtly mentioned That I think he was confusing me with the other customer. (A bald gentleman easily 20 years older than me, for the record I have hair and plenty of it) The monroe guy looked annoyed that he had another customer and had to repeat himself. I listened to him talk to this older customer and he was talking in circles trying to confuse the guy, you could tell he was full of shit and trying to swindle some old man. Finally when it was my turn I asked "you guys do inspections here?" And his response was "no" I replied with "ahh okay, Ill take it somewhere else" and i informed him his website says they do. And he replied you are wring, no it doesnt. No empathy, no compassion, no where near quality service let alone passable service. I wish i had caught the guys name. I also wanted to mention I have never written a review before but I do work in a service industry (computers). And holy shit if i treated even one customer the way this asshole did i would be fired on the spot. read more

Horrible experience just buying a quart of oil. I stopped in to buy oil and was paying cash. The guy behind the desk got the oil I needed, but then took 10 minutes to type my vehicle type, full name, address and phone number in the computer, even though I told him twice that I don't live in the area. He then refused to make change for me!! I gave him a ten, two ones, and coins so all he had to give me back was $5. He was short on change so I did this to help him out. He literally would not give me $5 because he claimed it would mess up his deposit. I tried arguing but after another 10 minutes left without my oil. What a waste of time! I was a witness of abuse of a customer before my time, she was tricked into paying double what she agreed on and I was denied an oil change - big heavy set man there said that he would only put high priced synthetic oil in my old car, even though in the same place and everywhere else I had regular, for 5 years. I said No and that I totally understand how they got so many negative reviews and now they earns one more. So that oversized person ran after me, to my car, reached faster than me, harassing me that it is Monro, they know what to do (and I, clearly, not), touching my car, banging on Monro sign and it all came to an aggravated assault. Made an appointment for 1:00 on a Saturday. The shop was basically dead, but my car wasn't taken until 1:40. The guy at the desk wasn't exactly friendly and welcoming, and when I asked if I could use the Yelp discount when you check in and he at first said he didn't know what I was talking about, then said "that's for a regular oil change" (which I guess mine wasn't?), and went on a rant about how he really doesn't like Yelp. Nate, the manager, and his guys are the best! Totally saved our butts! My van needed a complete front brake job. Seems the hoses collapsed, and in the process kept the front brakes partially engaged. So, at about a quarter-to-five, we find a mechanic who is still open a few miles away until six. We limp the van there, brakes smoking. He and one of his workers stay until about nine to fix them, instead of telling us to pick it up on Monday like virtually every other mechanic would have on a Saturday night. And since he didn't have the needed hoses in stock, he found a place that did and drove there to pick them up himself, since their delivery guy had already left for the day. The bad news is the whole thing cost little over a thousand to do (brakes, calipers, rotors, hoses) but they did it and got us home, restoring a little bit of my faith in humanity. Oh, he noticed my high-mounted brake light was out, and slapped a bulb in as we were heading out the door. Yeah, it was an expensive fix, but I don't think it could have worked out much better. I have been using Monro for oil changes for years and they always check the car to make sure it is running okay. If you want a reputable and trustworthy garage this is the place to go. I got a nail in my tire and definitely needed new tires as my tires were also very old. Nate took care of me making sure I had great tires at a great price. He thankfully had me get tire insurance that was the best thing since I recently got another nail in a tire and the insurance took care of the new tire. The staff is also very knowledgeable and friendly giving you great service. read more

Went here because my tire pressure light came on. When I arrived I waited about 5 minutes before someone actually came out to the computer desk. When the guy came out he barely acknowledged me, was texting on his phone and cursing. I finally told him why I was there and he seemed aggravated that he had a customer. He then took my car to look at the tires and came back to tell me that I drive to much. Im sorry sir, but what does that have to do with the tire pressure light? I asked him if anything seemed odd about the tires (i.e. were there any visible holes/ screws in the tire, etc.) He proceeded to talk about things not related to my current situation and told me he put air in the tires. When he went to bring my car back out front he whipped around the corner to make a u-turn. Then he gives me my keys and tells me the tire pressure light is still on and to just drive with it that way because he doesn't know how Volkswagens work. Way to be helpful! This place will rip you off. Don't come here! A clip in my door snapped which holds together the window mechanism. They took apart the door to look at the mechanism and told me that the clips snapped, but no one sells just the clips, you have to buy the whole mechanism and it would cost $300! And then an additional $120 for labor. Then he told me I owed him $30 for taking apart the door and would apply it to the total cost if I came back and he changed it, which is ridiculous. Most places don't charge just to look at something. I said I'll check around and did online. I looked around online and you can get just the clips for very cheap ($20) and the whole mechanism (including the motor, which still worked in my car) for $50-$70! I was so annoyed. He tried to completely rip me off. Looking at the other reviews, it seems to be a general consensus that this place will try to rip you off in whatever way they can. read more

Only giving 1 star because 0 is not an option...I had to get my car jumped by AAA so afterwards I dropped it off at Monro to get it checked since it is right around the corner from my house. Nate told me I needed a new battery, a new alternator, and that whoever had installed my radiator had done the wiring wrong such that the fans were running when not needed. His quote was outrageous (and changed between phone calls), he wanted $602 without including the 'fan problem'. I called Herb Chambers and my usual mechanic, who both said that Nate's diagnosis made no sense to them. I called Nate back to say I wanted to get a second opinion, and he laughed in my face and then tried to tell me that the car would not be able to drive off his lot. His scare tactics and mockery were obnoxious, and I also suspect he was profiling since I am a young asian female. The car drove with no problem over to my usual mechanic where my total repair bill was $311. Needless to say I will never go back to Monro. read more
