I normally don't leave reviews, but my experience here on Saturday 11/22 was so bad that I feel obligated to. I truly hope management addresses this. I came with two friends, and two separate issues made the night unnecessarily stressful. 1. The back bartender was extremely intoxicated Normally I wouldn't care if a bartender is a little buzzed, but this went way beyond that. She overcharged me for shots instead of water, couldn't communicate, kept dropping bottles, and the whole situation was a mess. When I asked her for a refund, she repeatedly took my card, handed it to someone else, then handed me their card back. This cycle repeated multiple times until I finally had to go full Karen-mode -- which I hated -- just to get my own money back. Thankfully, the manager did refund me, but the amount of time and stress it took to straighten out something that simple was ridiculous. 2. Security ignored a dangerous situation There was a tall security guard with a septum piercing and very short curly hair. I let him know that a group of guys in the crowd were moshing aggressively. At one point I got thrown so hard into the security guard that it genuinely hurt. I'm 5'5". I had tried moving away, I had asked the guys multiple times to chill out, and they would stop... until they didn't. This crossed a line. This was not a rock show ... it was a Top 40 nightclub with a dress code. The level of physical aggression was unsafe. Instead of helping, the security guard brushed it off as if I just "fell into him" and literally said, "Isn't that what they're supposed to do?" Absolutely not. Not at a nightclub. And definitely not when other patrons are getting injured. Then the security guard just moved to another section and ignored me. Overall I have 10+ years in nightlife as industry and I'm extremely forgiving. But being overcharged, having my card mishandled, and then getting physically slammed by other patrons while security shrugged... that's not acceptable on any night. Will I go back? Maybe. But I definitely expected more from the staff and the way situations like this are handled. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Monroe yet. I'm a big fan and I have been for many years. Monroe is a beautiful versatile space that is ideal for hosting events. The owner and staff are hands on and it shows throughout every aspect of this memorable venue. I've always appreciated that Monroe is both elegant and chic - while still remaining accessible. The space looks just as stunning during the day - as it does in the evening - not an easy feat for many lounges. It is also one of the few venues in the area - that has a heated outdoor lounge. And a what's up one - at that. I have yet to visit Monroe - since they've updated their outdoor area - with vivid bright colors, and retro furniture, but just from photos alone - I'm a fan. It's perfect for late night photo sessions and memorable hangs with friends/loved ones on a classic brisk San Francisco evening. If quality drinks are your thing - Monroe's cocktail list is well curated and well executed. There is also a nice array of comfortable seating - both inside and outside, so you can enjoy your drink(s), while people watching. And yes - if people watching is your thing - Monroe is great for it. They host regular fun dance nights, along with drink specials; ideal for nights when you just need to groove or forget about your week. One of my favorite aspects of Monroe is its rich history. The building has a legendary past. From 1948-1957 - the building was known as Mona's Candlelight - the first openly lesbian club in SF. Later from 1957-1969 - it would become The Jazz Workshop - housing jazz greats like Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, and Johnny Coltrane. Comedian Lenny Bruce was even arrested in this building - during a live performance back in 1959. (Please note that all of this info was taken directly from their website - https://www.monroesf.com/history/). The building has seen a lot throughout the years. It's truly lived. I am so thankful that a place like Monroe exists. I can personally attest that Monroe is not only a fantastic place to host a event, but that it is a wonderful space to attend one as well. I've recommended it to friends throughout the years as both an event venue - and a weekday/weekend lounge/dance spot. It has always delivered. Super packed. Thought it was more of a lounge vibe, but it was more clubbing vibes the night we went, but i guess it should of been expected. You can barely move, no space at all. Luckily we had bottle service so we did have our own section but it was annoying that people kept trying to seat in our area and would randomly dump their empty glasses at our table ..! Oh top of that our host/server managed to spill drinks on our party 2x....which is annoying. No one likes to be spilled on. Like come on! We are San Francisco locals and have been going to Dragonbar before it became Monroe 15 years ago. We used to really like Monroe especially for their battle of the decade night on Friday. I literally recommended it to all my friends who visit me and bring them there. Well we are never going back. We had the strangest experience with the owner of Monroe - Payam Arvin. I have never seen him before. It was 6:40pm on a Friday (Aug 2024) and the club is pretty empty still playing 70s music. I am dancing a little by the dj booth and this guy in a short jacket bumps into me to get to the booth it seems. There was room to walk around so I was a little annoyed but no biggy. I thought he was just rushing to go to his booth or something. 5 min later he walks the other way and kind of push me out of the way again. Again nothing big but noticeable rude. I dismissed it as maybe he had a few too many drinks. I don't really drink so I just try to ignore people who are tipsy. . 5 min later, he again passes us to push his way to the booth this time abruptly pushing past my husband who reacted and bumped him back a little. My husband actually then said sorry. It was just reflex for him. This guy then asked my husband to leave the club. I was incredulous as we are having fun waiting for 80s music to begin. I went to the guy and asked him why. He said he works at Monroe and my husband has to leave. I am thinking but you bumped into my husband and the fact you worked here and is this rude was upsetting enough. We got our stuff and walked out the backyard calmly with him. I asked for his full name. I wanted to make sure the owner knew this guy is perhaps drunk on the job. To my surprise he said I am Payam Arvin. I am the owner. He gave me his business card. Well. I guess Monroe is too successful and they don't care about their long term customers any more as the owner was probably the rudest worker we have met at any club in sf. So you decide whether you also want to experience this level of arrogance from this Owner. I am sad actually to experience this first hand also as a local. We already had plans to come back with our friend in September but now will change all of our plans. It's a sad day for sf for an owner of a beloved club to let the success of the club go so much to his head as to have this happen. . I had to double check on Google for his photo in case he was bluffing to be the owner. He is the owner. He didn't lie about that. read more

Pictures don't do it justice. It's my go-to club. My friends and I have yet to find a club to beat Monroe. IMO they have all three main components of a good club and so far it's the only place to have them all: crowded (no awkward empty dance floor), dark, and good music. I hate when there are empty areas on the dance floor and when I can SEE... the ambiance of Monroe is top-notch, perfect clubbing setting. The music is usually really solid, even on the worst nights, it's better than most other clubs. It's a variety of R&B, rap, pop, throwbacks, etc. Also, the crowd is mostly early 20s. Drinks are pretty good (more on the strong side) and usually cost $15-$20. I recommend the main bar in the front, rather than the mini side bar near the other exit. The bathroom is a little small, but it's nice and clean. There is a cover, but girls get in free. read more

the bouncer, hispanic with facial hair was so rude and disrespectful. my friends and i were confused with the line situation because we thought they had separated the lines between boys and girls, when we had gotten to the front of the line the bouncer had stated "do you guys have reservations or something. what's wrong with you guys". my friends and i were taken aback with such a statement we decided to take our business elsewhere. also to add, multiple people throughout the night had also mentioned him being rude and disrespectful. i get it he works at a nightclub dealing with intoxicated people everyday but you work in customer service but it should have been handled in totally different way ! read more

I only come to Monroe SF for their Friday battle of the decades night for great music and great deals on drinks! I recommend coming early, there was only a small line when I got there at 9pm. When I left at 12am, the line was massive and could have easily been over an hour just to get in. The earlier you get there, the cheaper the drinks which I certainly took advantage of, though the most expensive it gets is $5 a drink. The music is always really good with everyone singing and dancing and the DJ does a good job mixing. Crowd is generally friendly with everyone having a good time. If you have a big enough group, booths are definitely the way to go. Staff are all really nice, from the bartenders to the bouncers. Complimentary coat check downstairs is super clutch since it gets HOT in the main room. This is such a fun weekly event, I love that I can live out my middle school dreams and hear Fall Out Boy and T-Pain and Katy Perry all in the same night :D read more

Did we care? Nah! This place was the business. Flashy lights, loud music, and a casual dress code. Show your ID at the door, get stamped, and move your body to grab a drink and shake your booty! There was no line when we got there but there was definitely a line by the time we left! Lots of bodies filled a tiny dance floor. Music changed to a different decade at the hour. The price of the drink specials also changes (and grows) at the hour too. The Friday night we went, it must have been from 9-10PM, because they had $5 cranberry vodkas with Y2K music. Yaaaas! Wow. This is probably one of the best clubs/bars I've ever been to. I wish Austin had a club like this because I would come here every Friday. Some of my SF friends highly recommended Monroe for Fridays because of their decades-themed music every hour. It was SO much fun. I believe they also have a ton of happy hour drinks, so with music + cheap drinks, it was a wonderful time. The interior is really pretty and elegant. The space is nicely laid out so you can go over to the bar and order but then make your way closer to the dance floor. read more

Isn't this absolutely the best place to let your hair down and dance the night away? My answer is hell yes. When I first came to San Francisco I was on yelp searching for a great night club since I love dancing and Monroe popped up everywhere. I couldn't believe that this place does have a happy hour on Friday from 5 pm to 10 pm with drinks starting from 1$ to 6$. Isn't this a steal in a city like San Francisco or anywhere else also. I came here with my husband around 7 30 pm, there was a line but it's worth the wait. People were raging at 7 30 Pm and I fell in love with this place. The 4$ vodka sprite drinks were amazing to be honest. The bartenders were great, super friendly and actually having a good time while making fabulous drinks. We found a place and danced the night away. The music was great, ranging from old songs to new songs. I danced on a lot of Taylor swift songs and I was super happy. I have been here several times with other friends and everyone had a ball here. I had a blast going out at Monroe! This is the place to hit up Friday nights in SF if you want to have a good time without breaking the bank. This is how their Friday nights work (drinks include beer and well drinks): 5-6 pm - 60s music - $1 drinks 6-7 pm - 70s music - $2 drinks 7-8 pm - 80s music - $3 drinks 8-9 pm - 90s music - $4 drinks 9-10 pm - 00s music - $5 drinks 10-11 pm - 10s music - $6 drinks There's going to be a line even if you come early. My friend and I arrived around 7:40 and it was a 30 minute wait or so, which wasn't terrible. Dress code can be casual or dressy, but shorts for guys aren't allowed, and we saw one guy leave the line to go home because of that. There wasn't any cover, which was surprising to me. I didn't use this, but I heard the bouncer tell someone else that there was free bag check downstairs. Even at 8:15, it was already super packed inside. We headed to the bar and each got a tequila shot as well as one drink for ~$30. Later on, we each ordered an AMF and paid around $32 before tip. It's a lot bigger inside than I thought. There are a couple of couch areas you can reserve in advance, but for the most part there's not a ton of seating as most of the people are here to dance and get their groove on. Because of the crowds, it does get super stuffy inside, but there's one small area that's open to the outdoors if you want to pop in and get some air. The music followed the schedule for the most part and was amazing! Everyone was singing and dancing and having a good time. Top 40s are my jam, so I really appreciated the music, though I don't think I heard anything from the last 10-15 years despite the fact that I stayed until midnight or so. Later on the DJ switched to more hip hop songs, so perhaps that why. We had such a good time here and would definitely come back next time we want to get crazy on a Friday night! read more

I enjoyed dancing here with the DJ music. The music play by time, meaning at 5 pm they play 50s music, 6 pm is 60s music, 7 pm 70s music and so on. The drinks are very reasonable at the early time from 5-7pm. At 8pm they will charge you an entrance fee and the drinks price goes up as well. I came here 3 times, i noticed the music was played by the same playlist but with a different DJ. It's fun to come here to dance with your friends from time to time. Or even for drinks. Came here on a Saturday night and spent more time in the line than we got in the club. We had a group cut us in line and when we communicated the issue to the bouncer he said there was nothing he could do... if they can't even manage the line then how exactly are they doing their job? When it's crowded *some* of the staff will just push through without saying excuse me or making the effort to shine their flashlight. We had prepaid the cover/entry fee and the bouncer(s) had still let other groups which just arrived in before us which was obviously due to favoritism or getting bribes. Doesn't exactly make for a welcoming nightclub vibe but the bouncer did at the very least refund our cover charge to make things right which was appreciated. read more

Battle is the decades on Fridays is so, so fun! They start at 5 with music from the 60s and drinks are a dollar. Then every hour they go up a decade and drinks go up in price. We try to get there for the 90s which is 8 to 9 and then stay for as long as the body lets us. Everyone is dancing and having a great time. The staff are nice and efficient, and I really appreciate the older security gentleman who is usually on the back. They have two bars, plus tables and bottle service. We'll come here for birthdays, anniversary, we even came after our wedding with our whole wedding party from like 22 to 80 years old. Everyone had fun. read more
