Charmaine's came highly recommended to me for the view and vibe, which definitely did not disappoint! Interior was equally gorgeous, and my favorite part was the richly appointed corridor to the restrooms. The crowd and vibe is swanky posh, with sultry lounge music playing overhead. I sipped on the Mr Mistofeles, which was an excellent and creative variation on a Manhattan with green chartreuse as the star addition! The one star deduction was for the slow service, but which was friendly and helpful nonetheless with Joel's expert recommendations. I did not partake in the food, but the deviled eggs looked interesting. I would recommend enjoying the scene on a more manageable weekday evening, as I have a feeling the weekends would get chaotic here. Shout out to the mixologists for seriously honing the art of the cocktail. Location is the rooftop of hotel proper.

The views at Charmaine's were incredible, the service was top-notch, eloquent and friendly. The drinks were special, and we were offered blankets to sit by the fire; the ambience made the entire visit. It felt very sophisticated entering the rooftop bar, and the different areas inside the bar were truly unique. Depending on where you sat, you experienced a whole different vibe. I liked how the outdoor seating was separated, providing some privacy for conversations. The food looked incredible, and the prices were reasonable given that it's in San Francisco.

Always a nice place for drinks on a warm sunny day! Been a few times and the view never get old. Resy are better bc everytime I've been I haven't had one and your seats aren't as prime but nevertheless still a great spot! I got the the Love cats which was a mezcal based drink and very good ! Only had time for one so a a great place for in and out as well.

This place gets 5 stars because the vibe and the service was top notch! Shout out to Enrique (sorry if I spelled it wrong) he took care of us this evening and he was so attentive! He was also very friendly and checked on us in good time increments which we really appreciated! Things we loved about this spot: 1) the rooftop 2) the music 3) your own persona fire pit 4) the service 5) the overall vibe/feel of the place 6) the drinks Things that were not so great but wont keep us from returning: 1) super small tables that make it difficult to maneuver 2) the food was mid Overall the pros outweigh the cons so we will return! Thanks for a wonderful experience!

Service: Great Ambiance: A total vibe Drinks: Delicious Food: Pretty mid ‍ Basically, come for a drink and the views. Get the bites if you need a snack, but don't expect to have your mind blown. The fries and sliders were average (not bad but not what you expect at the Proper.) The servers were all lovely. The vibe is so good. And as a hotel guest, it's so nice to have access.

Everyone was super nice but the food was all fried. We tried asking for some things on the side but it didn't work all too well. I really wanted to love Charmaine's, but the menu felt overwhelmingly unhealthy. Nearly every dish we ordered from the fish tacos (which they could have grilled for us), and the white chips for the poke were stale, the normal chips were oily, and lacking balance. After a few bites, everything started to taste the same and the flavors just missed the mark. I was hoping for more fresh or lighter options to break things up. The staff and atmosphere is very nice, and the view of course is gorgeous but the food left us wishing for more variety and less grease.

The drink was good, and the appetizer was tasty too. The restaurant had a really nice vibe, and the service was good the staff were friendly and attentive. However, the portion was very small, even for an appetizer just something to enjoy with our drinks. You can't really tell from the photo, but it was about the size of one or two fingers next to each other. Honestly, for the price, it really wasn't worth it.

There's a nice rooftop bar at the top of the Proper Hotel. The problem is that the hotel is on the corner of Market and 7th Street, the heart of the challenging mid-Market area. I've known this intersection for years, and believe it or not, it's not in its worst state now. Cadres of addicts and dealers used to congregate in large numbers, but the numbers have decreased recently. Knock wood. Even so, I was still on my guard when I arrived for Happy Hour. The hotel was smart to restrict entry on the McAllister side since most of the distressing behavior is on the Market side. When I entered the quietly stylish lobby, I was initially confused where to go, but the doorman guided me to a secure elevator which took me directly to the roof. It looked like a corporate event was taking place because everyone was in suits. Still able to slither my way through the crowd to enjoy the views, I was surprised how serene Market and 7th looked from 120 feet above. The bar was surprisingly empty, so I sat myself down in front of a cordial bartender and had a particularly smooth $20 Espresso Martini (Photo 9). I decided to treat myself to a $6 Smoked Salmon Deviled Egg enhanced by seaweed, sesame, and chile salt (Photo 10). It matched well with the martini. COCKTAIL / FOOD - 4 stars...a welcome martini and a nice nosh AMBIANCE - 4.5 stars...awesome views, well appointed bar SERVICE - 4 stars...treated me well even though I wasn't part of the event TOTAL - 4 stars...worth the urban adventure to come here RELATED - Lingering in the 'Loin? Chicken Skewers and French Fries

My husband and I came to Charmaine's for our anniversary dinner. The energy and aesthetic was sooo cute. I love that our server was so prepared to answer all the questions we had about the drink menu. The drinks and bites we ordered were delicious. My husband had the chicken skewers and I was just snacking on some french fries. As for drinks, I ordered a "Kissin in the California Sun" and he ordered a "Mr. Bigglesworth"

Chickpea dip (hummus) with house potato chips
    Casey M.

My friends and I have eaten here twice now ahead of Broadway shows at the Orpheum theater. The view is gorgeous and the food/drinks are solid. At our most recent visit, I ate the chickpea dip (aka fancy hummus) which was flawlessly smooth and creamy. I ordered a side of veggies to eat it with, since it only came with potato chips, which, although delicious, are a bit odd to eat with hummus IMO. The crisp veggies were excellent with the creamy dreamy hummus. Both my friends enjoyed their orders of pork belly lettuce wraps, along with their drinks (Crookshanks and Spotted Civet). On our previous visit, I ordered the sweet potato quesadilla which was fine. There's a sauce of some kind in it that wasn't my favorite. But it wasn't bad.

Everything about my Charmaine's experience was fine. I don't have complaints, though I expected this to feel like more of an elevated experience than it was. True rating: 3.5/5. I popped by around 6pm and, as a guest at the hotel, was seated within a few minutes. That experience alone was great, and all of the staff, hosts, servers, and others at the restaurant who I interacted with were considerate. I had the option to sit at a fireplace table outside or high top inside. I get cold easily so wasn't planing on sitting outside, but the fireplace swayed me. Note for others: the fire is more for ambiance than warmth. I ordered a glass of wine, the poke with rice crackers, and the octopus skewers (at my waitress's recommendation) and they were all quite tasty! The seafood was fresh, the flavors were well balanced, and I enjoyed my meal. I did not, however, expect to spend $85. I don't usually order alcohol when I eat out, so perhaps that contributed to some of the sticker shock. Like I stated originally, everything was fine, but nothing really felt like it stood out, so it's hard reconciling that with the bill.

    Grey goose dirty martini
    Nitya C.

Came for drinks on a Friday night with a reservation. Here's the TLDR Definitely located in a sketchy part, so I recommend ubering or taking BART to the Civic Center which is right next to the hotel. Drinks were great. Grey goose dirty martini cannot be recommended enough! Unfortunately when we went it was extremely windy and cold so pretty much everyone was packed inside and we were placed at a really bad side table but we made the most of it. Definitely want to come back to sit out on the roof!

Fish tacos, carne asada tacos, wings and Love Cats drink
    Alina N.

Food: 6.5/10 ‍Service: 8/10 Ambiance: 8/10 Parking: N/A (Took rideshare) Vibes: 7/10 Value: 4/10 Lemongrass Chicken Wings ($22): 6/10 Classic wings - easy finger food and nicely crisped. Not particularly unique, but solid. Crispy Fish Tacos ($22): 7/10 Local cod, cabbage and sea bean slaw, avocado, smoked habanero cream. I normally don't go for fish tacos or fried food, but my friend ordered these and I was surprised by how much I liked them. Carne Asada Tacos ($27): 6/10 Marinated ribeye, chile de árbol salsa, cilantro cream (gluten-free). Recommended by our waitress. Flavor was good, but they were a little too salty for me. If they had dialed that back, I would've fully recommended them. Love Cats Cocktail (~$20): 7/10 Mezcal tequila, Select Aperitivo, strawberry, lemon, cinnamon, served on the rocks. I don't usually go for mezcal or aperitivo-style drinks, but my friend ordered it and I had a sip and it was surprisingly good. Was in the area to see a Broadway show at the Orpheum and needed an upscale spot within walking distance - Charmaine's was it. We reserved outdoor seating (note: $10 deposit per person required on weekends), and although we were both in skirts and it was a chilly SF night, the fire pits gave off enough heat that we didn't even need our jackets. The rooftop views are gorgeous, and as someone who appreciates interior design, I loved the intentional aesthetic - everything from the furniture to the lighting felt curated and Instagram-worthy. Our total came to $213 for three dishes and four drinks. While pricey for light bites, the overall experience, ambiance, and service made it make a little more sense. I'd like to return for their Sunday paella brunch on a sunnier day. I would imagine the ambience would be more of a vibe; it was a bit quiet when we went. Verdict: Gorgeous decor and good to check out at least once and enjoy the views, but I feel it was too overpriced. I would try other rooftop bars before coming back here.

We ordered shishito peppers and mushroom bahn mi sliders. The mushroom bahn mi sliders were amazing - the quality fillings and taste of the soft bun - I was unexpectedly hit with a bite of spice from maybe jalapeño seeds left but didn't sour my experience. The shishito peppers ended up being extremely spicy as well, those are usually just a few spicy and not the majority. The roasted lemon and salt was a wonderful combo but just too spicy to eat. However, the server very kindly removed it from our bill without us asking. We order the crostini because we were still hungry and that was an absolute hit. Delicious med-soft crostini with luscious berries and sweet honey. I didn't care my hands got sticky as it was soooo good! Great experience, I would be weary if the peppers as I'm a bit spice-intolerant but everything else was spot-on.

I first got the namesake cocktail: Blind Pig. It was incredibly well-balanced, and the flame presentation upon arrival was an epic mini show. Later during last call, I decided to risk it all and roll the dice to order from the secret menu. I rolled a 5, which got me a wine & Japanese beer concoction with Sichuan peppercorn. They have security outside thar checks IDs & also manages the queue in case the bar gets too crowded. We had no issues getting in, but there were zero indoor seats available - both the bar & table seating. Thankfully, they have a really cozy & well-lit patio area. The waitress let us know that even the outdoor patio has table-side service, so we made ourselves comfortable on the outdoor bench & within seconds she had brought us waters & cocktail menus. Weather outside was really nice, so I'm glad we actually sat outside. Each cocktail is $20, which definitely is a little steep, but I think the creativity, quality, & prestige of being named a top 50 bar supports the price. Each part of the menu is organized by liquor ie whiskey, vodka, brandy, gin, etc. We tried 4 drinks total. I only took menu photos of the pages we ordered from but they have a lot more selections. We ordered the Kung Fu Pandan, Silky Street, Rice Rice Baby, & Tropical Gangsta. We had some favorites over others, but all were very well crafted! The drinks came out pretty quickly considering how busy it was. The only hiccup was our final drink took quite a while. Once it was 11pm, the bouncer started to let everybody in, so I'm guessing they only let people inside every 30 minutes to prevent overcrowding, even though once we got in it wasn't that crowded and there was plenty of open space outside too. Having to wait only gave us about an hour inside. It says they close at 12am and that is exactly when they close--you can't stay any longer than that. I'm used to bars typically staying open about 30 minutes to an hour after the listed closing time to allow customers inside to finish up. As soon as 12am hits, the bouncer starts going around and constantly telling you to hurry it up because they are closed now. The service was also pretty slow, which did not give us much time at all to sip and enjoy the drinks before they closed. We started off ordering two drinks, then our waiter came back about 10 minutes later and asked for last call so we ordered another one (this was before our two drinks even came out yet). After about 15 minutes, we got all three drinks and the waiter apologized and said he didn't charge us for the third drink since it took so long. This gave us only about 10-15 minutes to finish our drinks before we started to get told we had to leave. At least my drink (apple bottom beets) was good and I was able to chug it, but I would rather be able to take my time and enjoy a drink. Their menu is huge, and they have a wide selection of different cocktails categorized under which type of liquor is used (rum, agave, brandy). The ambiance is dark and romantic.

I have to preface my review by stating I absolutely adore Catholic art, antiques, relics and such,…read moreso this definitely influenced my decision to check this place out; but I am beyond happy that my curiosity led me here. The ambiance was perfect for a nightcap. I visited Holy Water with relatives who live in the area but hadn't visited the place themselves before. Drinks we ordered include: * Mexican Firing Squad - Our favorite of all. We are classic paloma cocktail lovers, and this drink provided everything we enjoy in a paloma and more. Tart, smooth, and all-around divine. * Southern Exposure - The celery in this really awakens the senses. Very refreshing. * Zombie - Boldest drink we've tried yet. Haunted us the remainder of the night (in a good way). * Poinsettia - Wish this wasn't just a holiday menu item. It's fabulous. * Caribbean Snow Day - The playful kid's cup this came served in had us fooled. This eggnog sure packed a punch. Can't wait to be back and check out what other rotating or seasonal drinks they provide. Lastly, major shout out to the hard-working bartender last night who provided kind, prompt and attentive service on top of greeting all patrons coming in, taking orders and bussing tables. You rock!

This place had a nice chill vibe despite being crazy busy. We were still able to find some decent seats and bask in the glow of good old JC. The place almost had a hall in the wall vibe with the twinkle lights but still boasted an impressive selection of drinks. Despite how busy it was, the staff was super friendly and bartenders were moving fast through the requests. Sometime at a bar you can feel ignored but it was not like that here. Cellphone signal is not great but they have wifi inside as well.
