Food is completely different from what it used to be. Not nearly as good. The last time I went to eat at Monroe's, right when me and my family walked in the door we got yelled at by multiple individuals that it was a private party. Never a bad meal to had at Monroe's. For 27 years they have been a town staple with great service and delicious sandwiches, salads, pastas, salads, and mains, all served in their beautifully decorated dinning room. I have to have the French onion soup every time. The mushroom Swiss burger is also delicious, served on some of the freshest rolls I've ever had. The dessert tray is always offered tempting you with amazing homemade treats if you have room. read more

The best were the chip fries, hands down the best ever. I would go back just for those. Maybe grab a sandwich or try a burger? The grilled cheese and ham were not bad. We moved to Kingwood in 2022 and this became our at least once a week restaurant. A little over a year ago it really started going downhill. Portions were smaller. Some of the meat appeared to have been microwaved and was way overdone. Food was not fresh. Service got really sloppy but at the same time their prices were skyrocketing - $70+ for 2 people with a beer or wine. We stopped going for a while and then tried them a couple more times. Food and service had just gotten worse. Biggest issue to me was that after going there weekly for over 2 years the owner - Jimmy - NEVER said "Hello - Thank you" - or acknowledged us in any way. August 26th, 2020 Tony and I had a late lunch after a morning of hiking. Tony drank a few cold Budweisers and I had unsweetened tea with lemon. Tony ordered a Philly Cheese steak with fries and I ordered the Open Face Roast Beef with mashed potatoes and gravy. APPALLING CUSTOMER DISCRIMINATION and NON-EXISTANT CUSTOMER SERVICE -- On Saturday, April 19, 2025, I and 2 family members arrived here for a quick bite prior to attending the Buckwheat Royalty Pageant at the Civic Center. We timed our arrival at 330pm to give 1 hour 15 minutes to eat, so we could leave at 445pm for the drive to the Civic Center, where doors opened at 500pm and the Pageant started at 600pm. Upon entering, we were greeted by a Hostess, who seated us in a booth. She gave us 3 menus and said our Waitress would be with us shortly. Our Waitress (Abby) arrived and took our drink order for 2 ice teas and 1 ice water. From the menu, I chose a White House Sandwich, my sister chose a House Salad and my brother-in-law chose a Ruben Sandwich. Abby returned with our drink and took our food orders. She headed to the kitchen at 335pm. Abby promptly returned with the House Salad for my sister. (Side Note -- the salad was very wilted, not cold and the bowl was only 1/3 full -- extremely small) As we waited for our 2 sandwiches to arrive, other customers ate or waited on their own food orders. More guests continued to arrive and be seated. By 405pm, our 2 sandwiches had still not arrived. Our Waitress (Abby) frequently walked by our table to deliver food or to take food orders for other guests. Abby made not attempt to stop by our table to update us on the status of our sandwiches, nor did she refill our drinks, while we continued to wait. By 415pm, we still had not received our 2 sandwiches and no further communication from Abby. At this point, a couple seated in an adjacent booth, waved their hands at a Waitress (not Abby) across the room. When she came over, the male guest told her they had been waiting for over 50-minutes for their food and he asked by it was taking so long? The Waitress went to the kitchen and returned to say that "special guests" had arrived in the Cafe Room and they were being given "priority" over all other customers. (Yet many other customers had arrived 20-30 minutes BEFORE the "special guests") The man then asked when his table's food order would be ready? The Waitress replied their order "had just been started by the kitchen"....now a FULL HOUR AFTER he and his companion had ordered! I then asked this Waitress about the status of OUR OWN order. That's when Abby arrived at our table (at 420pm). We told her we were attending the Royalty Pageant and we were rapidly running out of time to eat our sandwiches, which had not yet been served. Abby advised us that our order had NOT YET BEEN STARTED BY THE KITCHEN....(now 45-minutes after ordering). Abby said "special guests" had reserved the Cafe Room and they were getting "priority" service. I chose to go to the Cashier Desk as my family went to the truck. I was met by the Hostess that had seated us. I explained to her that we had patiently waited from 335pm to 420pm (45-minutes) for our 2 sandwiches and we had just been told that the kitchen had not even started preparing our food! I told her this was UNACCEPTABLE SERVICE and we couldn't wait any longer. She repeated the info about the Cafe Room guests needing priority. I told her that I and my family were attending the same Pageant and had arrived 30-minutes BEFORE the Cafe Room guests. She then charged $19.16 for 2 ice teas ($2 each) and the House Salad ($7), which actually totaled only $11 plus tax. At no time did the Hostess or Waitress ever come to our table to apologize for, nor explain why, our food was being delayed. Since the Hostess knew in advance of the "special guests", she should have told us, and all early arriving customers, that all food orders would be delayed! The fact that Monroe's chose to (1) DELIBERATELY DISCRIMINATE against early arriving guests, (2) chose to BLATANTLY DISREGARD normal customer service standards, and (3) OVERCHARGE us because we chose to leave is UNACCEPTABLE! Monroe's is not worthy of new or repeat guests and is an UNPROFESSIONAL, SMALL-TOWN RIP-OFF masquerading as a place to eat! It can't even be called at restaurant! DO NOT DINE HERE!! read more

First and foremost the service was absolutely pleasant, the lady that charged me was very attentive and speedy service. That's where the 2 stars come from. BUT...the food is a completely different story. The Fettuccine Alfredo was extremely bland, for someone who doesn't care for salt, I actually had to salt my pasta. The Alfredo sauce was not mixed properly and clumpy on the linguini pasta. I was utterly confused of the "crab dip" which to me tasted like watered tuna salad with lots of mayonnaise. The side order of mashed potatoes was not fully cooked and the potato flakes were visible on the top along with a very gummy like consistency. For $2.95 there should be more than 4 pieces of broccoli on a side order along with a what seemed to be a cheese sauce substance drizzled on the vegetable which tasted similar to slightly spoiled milk. I dined here with grandparents, uncle and Dad a couple nights ago. 4/5ths of us got the crabcake(s) and my grandma got the special (which was fish but tbh I can't remember what it was, sea bass maybe?) The crabcakes were good -- pretty standard. My baked potato was AMAZING, the broccoli could have been cooked a LITTLE bit longer (I don't like crunchy broccoli) and the house salad was good and standard. They have an awesome selection of desserts -- try the strawberry cream pie if they have it. Word of advice: don't sit under a fan because the draft is HORRENDOUS. As a waitress myself I understand it gets REALLY hot when you're running around like a chicken... but as someone who once managed a restaurant, I understand the customer is ALWAYS right. (IE; we asked our server to turn down the fan and she said the owner didn't like the fans turned off or down because of how hot it gets in the place -- well, it was 72 degrees and breezy out that day, I think turning down the fan would have and should have been acceptable). read more

At the start of the meal it was fine and the waitress was nice but I'm still only putting a 1 star, wish I could put no stars. This absolutely ruined the experience completely. We ordered potato skins, which was good. Then for the entrees which is the down fall along with the owner Jimmy. Me and my fiance got chicken Alfredo and shrimp scampi. We started eating and found out that the noodles in both meals was undercooked, the Alfredo sauce in my meal was bland and gritty, the broccoli in my Alfredo was over cooked. So we told a different waitress about it being nice about it. She seemed irritated about it and got the manager. Well here comes Jimmy (The owner) to ask whats wrong with the meals. So I calmly explained the issue and was fairly nice about it. Well I guess I hurt his feeling or offended him because he stated with an attitude "well were famous for our Alfredo sauce! And if the broccoli was overcooked then it would be shriveled up." And proceeded with an attitude telling me that is my opinion. Long story short we will not be returning! I'd heard such great things about this place that I was expecting a excellent meal. Unfortunately, it was mediocre at best, and the fact that they gave me the wrong entree didn't help. Salads were fine, nice that they put the dressing on the side instead of on it so patrons can control the amounts. Next the rolls came and they were...weird. They had an odd, dense texture and were almost flavorless. I usually love bread and rolls at restaurants and have to force myself not to overindulge. But despite being ravenously hungry, I put my roll down after only 2 little bites. It was almost like they left out some essential ingredient or something. I ordered the Rajin' Cajun pasta, but instead was served some sort of bland marinara sauce over lukewarm pasta. It was a pretty major disappointment. Didn't feel like complaining or sending it back, so just ate it anyway. I should mention that the service was really great - fast, friendly and cheerful. read more

My family and I stopped by for lunch Saturday very nice and friendly staff and a homey atmosphere, a lot to choose from on the menu so it's kind of hard to pick but they have a very good selection. I got the steak salad, my husband ordered the HRB and our boys ordered butter noodles, Fries and grilled cheese and the food was excellent the steak was perfect and the salad was awesome and it comes with fries on top which was perfect the ranch dressing taste awesome, the HRB was very good too and my sons said they have the best grilled cheese and noodles!! I gave three stars because of the local competition there is an awful lot going on here maybe simplifying the menu would help diners choose something that they actually like. I didn't know what to choose so I just picked spaghetti it was different then what mom makes but good on the last. Space was cluttered and not necessarily "Theme". Don't take three stars as a negative the service is out of this world especially compared to anything local. Horrible from ground up. Overpriced crappy food. I left hungry. Thank God for Hardee's. In fact you could even say yourself money by going down the street to Dollar General. I paid $2.50 for three pieces of broccoli that were cold. You can get a bag you can steam in the microwave at Dollar General for cheaper. The beer as it's priced and not worth it. There is a comfortable, family dining room table atmosphere among the upright piano, books and antique merchandise on two of the walls of this "general store" and restaurant. A noticeable work in progress, hidden within the restaurants stately façade on East Main Street, is the completed Italian Tuscany fresco scene motif that accents some of the restaurant. This element is not lost on the patrons as an attempt to highlight the notable Italian emphasis in some of the dishes as compared to the otherwise very American fare of steaks, chops and seafood including some rather tasty Maryland Style Crab Cakes. I visited the restaurant for dinner on a Tuesday evening and attempted to arrive after the dinner crowd. After seating myself in the relatively large dining room I was met by Kim, my waitress, who presented me the menu. There were specials for the evening but my seat precluded me being aware of them until after I had ordered. I imagine that regulars to Monroe's would have read them on the large chalkboard behind the bar and cash register area as they entered the dining area. I found the wait staff to be casual, warm and attentive. Just as you would hope for and expect in this local favorite. On this occasion the clientele was a healthy mix of several families, some with small children, elderly friends, and military reservists from nearby Camp Dawson. The menu is not exhaustive, but adequately covers a very wide range of fare including deli and take-out for all tastes and hours of the day. I selected the Maryland Crab Cake and a grilled pork chop with three sides at a reasonable $13.95. The Maryland Crab Cake though unexpectedly thin was never the less very tasty and enjoyable. It may well be one of the better renditions of Maryland Crab Cake I have had West of Deep Creek Lake. The pork chop was an ample size and nicely grilled and though I found it cooled a bit too quickly, perhaps owing to some preparation timing errors, was a good complement to my poor man's "Surf and Turf". Along with my entre'e I chose a small dinner salad with a sweet tomato basil dressing that was served very cold. It was a nice focusing dish for the main course. A standard baked potato and cold slaw rounded out my side dishes to the meal. The baked potato, dressed as you desired, was a good choice. The cole slaw was a sweet tasting treat to go with the main course and was a real home style favorite just like your Grand Ma might have made. Founded in 1998 and named after the owner, Jim Maier's father, Jim and Shelley Garbart share in their desire for food service perfection while maintaining a family style atmosphere. I noted them over seeing and apparently actively participating in every facet of the small organization including tending to the kitchen, monitoring their banquet room facility, cleaning tables and, of course, taking time to chat with their guests. While Kim tempted me with the details of the many and diverse desert choices, I reluctantly declined, wanting to have something more to look forward to on my next stop at Monroe's Restaurant in Kingwood. Kingwood for most is well off the beaten path of the Interstates and main east-west thoroughfares, but if you want to shake the fast food habit and have a fine meal at a reasonable price Monroe's is a great place to start in this neck of the woods!
