Do NOT toy with my emotions when I am walking the streets of some new-to-me city with a sign that includes the word "Delicatessen" in it. I will immediately assume that within awaits a superior Reuben, a potato salad with the peel left on, and possibly a slice of pie made the day before. Anything less, and I mean anything, is unacceptable and very well might ruin the rest of my day. But this was not that. Upon entrance I did have concerns, as it has a contemporary cafe-ish feel. The lighting, decor, etc. might initially lead one to believe they can order some bland panni and continue with their day. Do not be mistaken. This feels like the home of someone's grandma (sidenote: "Lola" is the combination of the two owner's names, Logan and Lauren) with the aroma floating through the air like a "dinner's ready" call from the front porch. There was no hesitation in my order; Reuben and potato salad. The marbled rye, corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut, with the house made dressing...oh such a work of art. The potato salad, why did I order a small portion?! It was delicious and served by some of the kindest people I have ever encountered in the food industry. If the weather permits, I highly recommend the outdoor seating. And I which I could give insight on the desserts, but alas the sandwich and salad did me in. Next time, next time for sure. read more

We stopped in for lunch - the place was definitely hopping. We tried the traditional hoagie with the typical meats, cheese and condiments. It was very tasty and the portions (I had a medium) were reasonable. We also tried the Pluto sandwich which is pastrami, lettuce, Utz potato chips, tomato and onion. It was also very tasty. We also decided to try the pasta of the day which was taco seasoning, tomato, sour cream and pasta. Not great but not bad either - just not a favorite. I've had great deli sandwiches from NYC to Los Angeles, and this place tops them all! I'm not kidding you. What a creative and dedicated team they have serving up delicious sandwiches in this small Virginia city. I had the Rachel, which usually comes with peppered turkey, but I substituted pastrami. It was juicy and delicious meat. Perfectly seasoned with a sweet and equally tasty slaw topped with perfection in their sauce on toasted marble rye bread. My daughters and I are all gluten free and have some difficulty finding GF options with good food here when we visit but today we found Lola's!! It was fantastic. We ordered the potato salad and loved it, we ate it all while waiting for our sandwiches which has never happened. I went up and asked where he got it and was told by the young man at the counter that he makes it himself, fresh every day and it sells out. I told him he needs to get that into the local grocery or farmer's market! So: HAVE THE POTATO SALAD! The sandwiches we had were excellent. We got the medium size and ended up taking two halves back with us. The favorite was the Ranch with rotisserie chicken, bacon, cheddar, and red onion, with home made ranch dressing. Excellent food. We stumbled across this gem randomly about a year ago half ago when we were in town for an event. I had to come back and my daughter volunteered to accompany me on the full day trip (including four hours of driving) just to get one of their sandwiches. We enjoyed the Pluto and the BELT as well as some dill macaroni salad. Both were just as delicious as we'd remembered! Not a ton of seating so it gets crowded at times as people wait for their made-to-order sandwiches, but it makes for fun people watching. We can't wait for our next trip to Harrisonburg. read more

I ordered the Lo. It's a London Broil, with sharp cheddar, cucumber, onion, and horseradish mayo on a marbled rye. One bite in and I'm already in love. Flavorful, mouth-watering and filling. 10/10. I visit Harrisonburg often, and when my friends told me there was a new deli in town, we decided to check it out. On a cold day in March, we ventured out in the sleet to try a sandwich. We were surprised that there wasn't an empty seat in the place. Later on, I couldn't understand why people kept coming in. What do they know that I don't know? After placing our order, our food took about 10 minutes to come out. My friend ordered the Mo, a grilled cheese with pesto and I built my own on sourdough bread. When our food was finally ready, we realized that there wasn't any pesto on her sandwich. While she didn't want it to be remade, I made sure to get her a side of pesto (which they were stingy with). It comes with pesto! Without it, it was just a grilled cheese and roasted chicken (which was cold cut chicken, not chicken breast if that's what you were thinking.). My smoked turkey sandwich was less than average. Here's the deal: to the people that are calling this a genuine New York deli, I don't understand your worldview. I spent $11 on a sandwich that I could have made better at home. Nothing about it was high-quality. The bread (looked and tasted like regular white bread), the cheddar cheese (1 slice that was so thin I could barely taste it), the meat (no smoky flavor and not enough of it), and the yellow mustard (plain regular mustard similar to French's). Here's how a sandwich at this price point could and should be elevated. 1) have real sourdough bread, not the kind you buy in the supermarket, 2) cut the cheese thicker or put more than 1 slice on it, 3) don't buy third party lunch meat from a cheap vendor, 4) either use the condiments you sell in the store, or make your own whole grain deli mustard, and 5) do better all around. read more

A real New York style deli in downtown Harrisonburg is a match made in heaven. Awesome decor and a neat little grocery store inside with niche items. I wasnt hungry when I walked in with my friends but I instantly worked up and appetite smelling and seeing these desserts, pastries and sandwiches all around me. The group I was with could not decide what sandwiches we want so we split the Mehrdeli, Pam Stoke, and Pastrami sandwiches. And they were amazing. The Pam Stoke was tasty and funky with blue cheese, the Mehrdeli has a fresh bite of turkey and a spicy after taste with the brown mustard, the Pastrami was juicy and tender. We also split some of the pasta salads and sides they had as well. The potato salad was rich and had a great bite to it. Did I mention they have fresh daily made desserts? We had, pecan pie, chocolate pudding pie, and coffee cardamom cheesecake. The pies were delicious, but the cheesecake nearly brought me to tears it was so good. I wish I lived closer to Harrisonburg so I could spoil myself with their spread more. Do yourself a favor and support these local cooking gurus and get yourself a bomb sandwich and out of this world desserts. 5 stars. Ill be seeing you guys soon. read more
