Perfect breakfast. Stopped in while driving through on a road trip to Canada and it didn't disappoint. It's a lovely old building with a simple clean and pleasant dining area. Simple menu with standard breakfast items plus a couple neat specials. Today they had apple bread French toast and triple berry cheescake waffles. I had the "Loaded Scrambled Eggs" with a side of hash browns. I chose sausage, jalepeno, and onions in the eggs with pepper jack cheese. Cam with two huge slices of sourdough. It was perfect. Not much else to say. The hash browns were done exactly they way inoooe them. Nice and crispy without being burnt. And our food arrived about five minutes after we ordered. Four of us were fortunate to nab a table just before the lunch rush during Timber Days a few weekends ago. Very neat, clean interior. But what really impressed me was the food. My veggie wrap was really, really good (and I'm not really a veggie guy). I liked the free re-fill on most drinks. The sweet potato fries were top-notch. I also had a cup of their red lentil soup-of-the-day, which, again, was fantastic. Our waitress was attentive and patient. What a great experience. Went here for breakfast before setting up camp at Lake Vermillion. First thing I noticed was that it was not accessible to people with disabilities...with a step at the front door. Normally I would go somewhere else, but my buddy was hungry and he helped me up the step. Once in the building it had a rustic feel to it. The server we had was nice and polite. The food that I saw people eating looked greasy. I had a breakfast sandwich since I thought that would be less greasy....boy was I wrong! It tasted good, but afterwards I felt yucky. Spent the next two days not far from a bathroom, if you know what I mean. Would have been nice to have some healthy or meatless options. I'm rating this a 1/5. I'd give it a 2/5 if it was accessible. Even higher if the food didn't get me sick. On second thought, I'd give it a ZERO if that was possible. read more

Food is excellent. Our family had lunch at the Montana Cafe headed North and a week later headed south. The wraps were as good as I have ever had. The cole slaw was excellent. We had a family reunion this weekend and asked the owner to accommodate our group. They made sure to have staff and opened up on a Monday morning just for us. The breakfast included real hash browns, sourdough bread and great egg dish selections. The special was blueberry bread French toast. I've eaten lunch there before and their chicken wild rice wrap was very delicious. Returning for their shakes. This cafe is a jewel! 5 star cafe even by Minneapolis standards. read more

Talk about a diamond in the rough. Do not judge this little hole in the wall diner by it's modest wrapping. Inside, is the most delicious breakfast. We had a breakfast sandwich that was perfectly seasoned with a side of hash browns with a dessert of blueberry french toast. Not gross canned blueberries on top of saturated, soggy bread. It's back! So happy the Montana Café reopened. I've stopped here for over a decade and was sad to see it close last year. New owners changed the seating and the place seems brighter. My wife and I stopped in for Sunday breakfast. The breakfast menu is small; only one page. However the basics are covered and the large amount of sides mean you can easily and inexpensively customize your entree to your taste. read more

We recently bought land in Tower and have been looking for new food options near us while building. Montana Cafe popped up. DELICIOUS! I had three hungry working boys and my self to get to go for. I've been coming here yearly when we visit Lake Vermilion ever since I was a kid. I am so happy that it reopened as I can't imagine Cook without it! The food is always great, the menu changed with the new ownership and I was happy with the addition of the buffalo chicken wrap. The only downside was the slow service but I know they are still new to the restaurant business so I'm sure it will all be worked out with time! read more

No heat so it made the experience of dining here uncomfortable. The meals were average to less than average for quality and taste. We dined at 6:00 pm and we were the only patrons of this establishment. I say over priced because of the quality of the food in our meals. Server was attentive and friendly. Traveling through on motorcycles, my husband and I were looking for more than a chain restaurant for a bite to eat, and did this place ever deliver! Even though we arrived 25 minutes till closing, we never felt rushed. This is NOT your usual local greasy spoon diner fare. Our meal of a chicken wrap and sweet potato fries was delicious. The ingredients were fresh and the fries were cooked just right. Don't let the outside older building look fool you....the place has been redone and it is so clean it sparkled. I've been through Cook more times that I can recall, but other than an afternoon spent siting a new tower I've never stopped for more than gas. This changed on Tuesday when I ventured off of US 53 and discovered the Montana Cafe a few blocks down River Street. My sister and I were looking to get lunch and the McDonald's on 53 was not an option. We cruised down the main drag and the Montana appeared to the best, and maybe the only, option for lunch in Cook. I parked in front of the building and we walked on in. There were an assortment of tables and booths along the walls and a counter in the back, and the waitress told us to go ahead and sit wherever we felt like it. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and I liked the antiquey feel of the decor. We were given menus right away and explained the specials, and I asked for an iced tea. It was brought out shortly, and I was first surprised because the menu specifically stated that iced tea was limited to one refill. This glass was about twelve ounces, and I was wondering why they would be so stingy with their tea. The reason, I soon discerned, is that this is some of the best iced tea ever. One taste and I could tell that it was homemade, probably in small batches. Memories of my mom's fresh sun tea during the summer came washing over me, and I would have likely drank a gallon if given the option. The menu contained many of the standard small-town diner items - burgers, chicken sandwiches and so on. But on closer examination I saw that the ingredients offered were a cut above the standard. The breads were differentiated (black bean, dark rye, etc.). I really had a difficult time deciding on which option to go with, finally settling on a pastrami melt with chips. It was amazing - the swiss was melted perfectly on the raw onion, and the pastrami was deliciously cured without being too fatty. The toasted kaiser roll had just the right amount of heft while being light and just slightly sweet. The kicker was a spicy brown mustard, which completely tied it all together. This was the best pastrami sandwich I've had that didn't come from my own kitchen. My only complaint was that the onion and mustard weren't spread over the whole of the sandwich, a minor quibble. My sister opted for the Italian po'boy on my suggestion. It was an Italian sausage patty with sauteed onions and peppers, topped with pepperjack cheese. My sister managed about three-quarters of it before giving up to fullness and passing the rest to me. It was spicy and delicious, but given the greasiness of Italian sausage I can see why a whole sandwich would be prohibitively filling. I wasn't too impressed with the chips - standard rippled potato chips - but I wasn't there for the chips. My complaint is with the service. While we were brought our food in short order, there was no follow-up afterward. I really wanted to get that sole allowable refill on my iced tea about halfway through the pastrami sandwich, but the waitress was nowhere to be seen. I tried flagging her down when she brought a massive burger plate to a booth near us to no avail. Finally, after we had both finished our meals excepting for a few stray chips, the waitress came back with the check and asked if we needed anything else. I asked for a refill and she hesitatingly agreed, taking my glass. My sister and I sat there for another six or seven minutes, finishing up the chip crumbs, and finally gave up on getting that second iced tea. When I went up to the counter to pay, the waitress didn't seem to remember that I had a tea coming to me, and that cost her a buck on the tip and a star on my review. Despite all that drama, I'd stop by the Montana again without qualm. It's definitely a cut above the rest. read more

Grumpiest old waitress ever. How about some manners and at least a crack of a smile. Jesus. After we were seated at a table still full of dirty dishes, we sat there for almost ten minutes before the waitress came over. She started taking our order with the dirty dishes still on the table! Hahaha. I had to ask her to clear the table. What planet is she living on? One fully stocked with heavy sedatives and apathy, for sure. Waited 25 minutes for eggs and pancakes and when the food came she forgot to put the order in for the pancakes. Hahaha. It was a comedy of errors. I don't know how they are still in business. Food was ok. But how hard is eggs and cakes. Overall I would say skip it and stop in Virginia instead. It gets two stars because the cakes were good. I stopped in the Montana one day with a party of 6. We were waiting for our table and were told to move from the place we were standing because we were in the way. We waited for a few minutes and then had to sit down at a dirty table. Our party then had to split up because they didn't have any extra chairs to seat us all. But I mean I can't complain to much because it was busy and there were only two servers. The food was ok but we waited 45 minutes. And our order was messed up. The service was horrible but the food was so so. The pancakes were good but over all if will not go back. read more

My most favorite breakfast place near the cabin! Nothing fancy, but everything is cooked really well- Portions are large and filling. Service has been amazing and fast. Decor is historic but with an update. Lots of rustic wood, beautiful old black and white photos, and always clean. Loaded scrambled eggs are a must for breakfast, and if they're available, try the walleye egg rolls. read more

We stopped because of the WiFi, but enjoyed the visit. Sunny side up was cooked perfectly! Pancakes were great. Read the reviews written several months ago and was somewhat reluctant to visit on account of the comments regarding service. I am glad I had the opportunity to sample their food. I had a wonderful grilled Rachael sandwich. As good as those of I have eaten at some of the top delis in Chicago. The service was terrific. Our wait person was extremely friendly and helpful in placing our orders. My partner and I both have dietary restrictions which they happily addressed. The owner came out, introduced herself and asked for our feedback on the cafe. She was very gracious and receptive to our comments on the feed and service. The cafe is well decorated, very clean, and comfortable. I look forward to having breakfast at the Montana and will return for dinner in a few days. I thoroughly enjoyed the food. read more

We have been to the Montana many time for both breakfast and lunch. The place is full of locals that can be inviting or very standoffish and cold. The environment is old and tired. The service is slow and disappointing. The prices seem spending for a local dive. However, I'm sure they are taking advantage of tourism. The food is plain lacking seasoning and creativity. Also, the Montana is closed when tourism is slow, why don't the locals support this place year round? In fact a lot of shops, restaurants, theaters are closed. Overall, don't expect much. read more
