Sewing demonstration at Montavilla Sewing Center Technology Showcase
    Nico B.

I visited the Montavilla Sewing Center today for the first time, having been invited to their annual Tech Showcase. The owner Brett Moore and his cousin organize the event in an effort to educate customers about innovations in equipment, new pattern collections, and gadgets benefiting those who sew, embroider or quilt. Showcase attendees spent the first 30-45 minutes navigating a series of demonstration stations throughout the building. Employees handed out raffle tickets at each station enabling attendees opportunities to win impressive prizes throughout the showcase. The seated presentation lasted several hours as the presenter pitched new products, demonstrated a few more machines, and handed out prizes that incrementally increased in value. The innovations and technological advancements sewing and embroidery machines have seen in recent years is remarkable. So much creative potential is unleashed just by having the right tools, so this showcase truly inspired me to take my skills to the next level. Montavilla Sewing Center is at the top of their game, offering this informative and entertaining event. If you sew, quilt or embroider, I would highly suggest attending the showcase to learn how you can achieve more impressive results in your creative projects.

10/10 for helping with sewing and overlock machine *needles*. I was initially helped over the phone and then when I arrived for in-person help later in the day, at least 5 folks joined in the quest to find the appropriate needles for my Singer machine. I'm glad I brought the needle clamp and an old needle with me, but I wish I'd brought the whole machine. I can't wait to return when I have more time to browse everything they carry and daydream about upgrading to newer machines. Had a great conversation with a gentleman about sewing machine needles (after successfully finding replacement server needles) and ended up with more than I went in for!

I didn't buy my machine there but from a dealer in Los Angeles. I had watched their YouTube videos about the Baby Lock Lyric and had learned a lot about using characters. I struggled trying to duplicate something Karen (the YT talent) did and called the store to see if they could help. Maggie was super nice and walked me through the steps to duplicate the effort. Thank you so much! I'll likely never be in Portland to personally thank you but so appreciate the remote help to a non customer but Baby Lock fan.

Ask the Community - Montavilla Sewing Centers

Can I go in with my own materials and use their sewing machines? Will they show me how to use the machine one on one or do I have to sign up for a class?

You should call them to see if you can have a private lesson. If no private lessons are available then you'll have to go with a class.

For Tango, this is the place. Many (if not all) of Portland's best dancers can be seen here and the floor energy on a good night feels like it's coming up from the floorboards. If you dance tango, you need to go here. Alex Krebs (the owner) creates a really great ambiance and has weekly classes for those who want to learn Argentine Tango. They're not even high school classes. They're "community" classes which attract learners with a very wide variety of abilities, backgrounds, and motivations. The public assumption that being a native speaker of a language somehow qualifies a person to teach that language seems to rule here. Before a scheduled sojourn in a foreign land, I was delighted to find an available class in the language of that land, and cheerfully signed up. I did the homework and attended every session. My teacher was not a credentialed language instructor but this person was generally punctual, knowledgeable and sincere. The textbook was good. My overall disappointing results were not due to any lack of good will on the part of students or teacher. The issue was that because the instructors are not trained in how to handle mixed-level classes, my teacher wasted a great deal of time (my time) in trying to cater to those unprepared (didn't do the homework) or those who have no idea how to learn a language (most Americans). For example, one woman student, in her thirties, leapt up from her seat at least three times during every class to answer voice calls, and texted constantly throughout. Having missed the instruction, she would ask the teacher to repeat the point, which he politely did. Another older man apparently had never studied a language before (perhaps had never studied anything before). He filled the class hour with random questions about basic grammar (what is a noun? what do you mean, noun?) history, and politics -- all of which the teacher politely answered, sometimes at length. Due to the teacher's lack of training in mixed-level classroom management, the pace of instruction was extremely slow and disorderly. In eight weeks I learned very little. I would not go back. Still, with so much variation among individual teachers and the possibility of a better mix of adult students, your mileage may vary. Bodhi tree is the only place in Portland to get formal instruction in Mongolian, for example -- and it's affordable. By all means give it a try, but I'd recommend to keep expectations low.

I was deeply disappointed, but I thought I would still share my experience. The only thing that really bothered me was how warm the room was. Maybe I just have a high tolerance for things, but I wasn't put off by anything. I was there to learn Cantonese Level 1. The instructor was very kind and friendly, and I hate that I forgot her name. If you're going in there expecting to be taught, then go somewhere else. This is a place to talk about the language, go through dialogue, and familiarize yourself with the way it sounds and how to speak it. But there weren't drills, memorizing or starting with the basics like tones. And that was fine for me because my memory is excellent and I can clearly remember how the instructor says it and I can repeat it. I'm thinking about doing one-on-one tutoring there, but the distance is a little out of my way. These are community classes and I had a good time.
