They just want to get as much money out of us as possible. I chipped my tooth. Just needed to get a fill-in they were pushing for root canal, I am pregnant and did not want to have an invasive procedure during the pregnancy. I've been a patient of Montclair South Dental for about 9 or 10 years. Over the years, I've gotten 5 root canals, and countless cavities filled. There is no one I would trust other than Montclair South Dental. I have very bad anxiety, and for anyone who feels the same, this is the best dentist for you! The doctors and staff are all fantastic! Vicky and Oni at the front desk are always welcoming, and helpful when looking for payment plans. The entire Azar family is wonderful, and you can tell they care about their patients. Dr. Josh and Sha-ron are amazing dentists and make the visit as painless as possible. Even consoling me when I cry in the waiting room. They are second to none! I have never EVER felt like they were trying to make a sale or upsell an unnecessary procedure. I know this because they are always forefront about cost and insurance plans, and have recommended an outside oral surgeons in a few cases. SHOULD BE ZERO STARS!!! My minor son went in for a routine bi-annual cleaning/exam. His previous cleaning and exam was 6months prior and this was our first time at this particular dental office. Unfortunately, we had new dental insurance and had to leave his trusted peds dentist, he had seen for years. I checked him in and we waited to be called. The receptionist called my son and stated after the xrays were completed I would be able to go back with him. I could see the hygienist enter and leave the room to complete the xrays and this lasted about 30minutes. After the xrays were completed I assume the routine cleaning would follow. My son goes to the dentist every 6 months so routine cleanings and exams are very familiar. I did communicate with my son (via text) if needed me to come back there and he stated he was fine. about 20-25minutes later my son returns to the waiting room and his mouth looks weird and he looks uncomfortable...... Well WITHOUT my ACKNOWLEDGEMENT or CONSENT my son was injected with local anesthesia by the hygienist and then had a scaling and root planing performed. NO ONE at all, neither the DMD or hygienist came out to the waiting room to discuss this with me BEFORE, DURING, OR AFTER. I went to the front desk and s/w the office mgr Janet who was very professional and understood why I would be upset and acknowledged that she herself would be livid, if that happened to her child. Further more not only did they do this, they apparently did his whole mouth when (according to the office mgr), the policy is to normally do one-half of the mouth per visit. At this point I was done and left before I lost my composition. Again, the DMD/owner did not come out to explain or discuss the situation. I did end up calling the office shortly after and spoke with Janet the office mgr again to inquire on their office policies and how this just happens. Again, Janet professional and answered my questions to the best of her ability and informed me that the DMD would being calling me later after she was done seeing her patients. I guess the incident was important enough for her to address sooner. I did receive that call later on in the evening (about 3 hrs after the appointment), from Dr. Fara Azar. I felt the provider did not care or see understand why I would be upset and only took accountability when I referenced, "what if it were your child", and when I stated I would definitely let my insurance know about this as well. Additionally, in looking at the chart information provided by the office, the date or the procedure done is dated the day before our actual appointment date and all the other dates on the chart is dated with the actually date of service. This is confusing because how would you have known you were going to provide a particular service, on a new patient (coming in for a cleaning only) without ever seeing the patient prior and no exam. Leads me to believe that this procedure probably wasn't even needed and a way for the office to uncharge on a routine cleaning. Let me also add that when looking up a scaling and root planing, Janet was correct that normally one-half of the mouth is done per visit and takes one-two hours yet our visit was a total of one hour, which included 30min of X-rays and a scaling and root planing of an entire mouth, for the other half hour w/ the DMD exam??? So many problems. I really tried staying with this office but the issues just piled up. I'll name my top 5 complaints. 1) They do dental procedures without your consent and without knowing first if insurance will cover them. On numerous occasions, I'd suddenly be charged with something I didn't ask for and they'd say insurance only covered so much. I had to finally insist that all procedures be checked with my insurance first so that I know the amount before I agree to anything. 2) They push hard for Invisalign but aren't expert at orthodontic issues. After paying $5,000 for Invisalign, I'm not happy with the alignment of my teeth and wish I had gone elsewhere for teeth straightening services. 3) They can be a little shamey about teeth. I have periodontal disease. The hygienists have often tried to guilt me into taking better care of my teeth when I do indeed try very hard (I pay them for 3 to 4 cleanings a year!). Another time, Dr. Azar told me after my Invisalign that I look so much better and that she cringes over crowded teeth. Who wants to go to a dentist who judges people's crowded or imperfect teeth? 4) They push for xrays when it's not needed. I have a thyroid disease and try to avoid xrays as much as I can. They regularly pushed for xrays and I had to argue hard them. 5) They will cancel your appointment if you don't confirm and then not even contact you to tell you it is cancelled. I admit I'm not great at confirming appointments, but I would expect to be contacted if my appointment was given away. I secured childcare and utterly wasted my time. And they did not think there was anything wrong with this practice of theirs. I've decided to move to a different office and suggest you look elsewhere, too. read more

had an appointment yesterday and it was a nightmare. Family owned the mom a dentist pulled my tooth with no anesthesia numbed up my face and lips but not the tooth where I NEEDED the anesthesia causing trauma to my jaw. Best dental practice I have ever been to. I am 7 1/2 month pregnant and needed a root canal at the time of my appoinment I was extremely nervoud and anxious everyone member of the staff was patient and very understanding they took time to make me feel comfortable they really care about every patient and explain everything to you. Big shout out to Eureka (hope I spelled it right) what an amazing person she helped me stay calm and talked me through every step. I will recommed you guys 100%. read more

Montclair South Dental is a good, convenient dental office. I had needed crowns on 2 teeth. Many other offices wanted me to get 6 crowns instead though so that "they'd match". South Dental suggested I go for just 2, and were able to quote me at a fair price. I recommend South Dental! read more

Good relationship/service with Montclair South (MS) for several years until I told Dr. Azar that I was opting to work with Smile Direct for my teeth straightening services. Prior to coming to MS I signed up for invisalign with a dentist/orthodontist practice that moved from NJ to NY several years ago. I was unable to complete the treatments as the commute to the orthodontist was too much every 3-4 weeks to pick up my trays. At this point I found MS and started going here. Recently, the hygienist/assistant at MS suggested I get another price quote for invisalign to finish the treatments. MS gave me a quote. Then being an educated buyer I started looking at other offices/services for more reasonable pricing. I settled on Smile Direct. Since I still had the attachments on my teeth from the invisalign treatment that I received years prior; I asked Dr. Azar (whom I have been a patient with for several years) to remove them. On a Friday I came in for my normal cleaning and scheduled another appt with the receptionist for the following Monday for the attachment removal. Before scheduling the appointment, her receptionist informed me that it was not covered by insurance and that I would have to pay for the removal. I told her this was not an issue and that I would be more than happy to pay for the Dr's services. The day of the removal the doctor started to examine my teeth, and during this examination, she asked why I was having them removed. When I told her that I was going with Smile Direct she proceeded to try and discredit their services and was visibly upset. She worked herself up some much so that she stopped mid-exam and said she was not "getting in the middle" of my prior orthodontist and the new service with Smile Direct. I told her that I was willing to pay for this service and her time and asked her what was the "risk" to her if she removed the attachments from 5 of my teeth? She then asked for my previous dentist's information, whom I have not been in contact with for over 8 years, so that she could have a conversation with him before she removed the attachments. This a standard dental practice and does not require "consultation" with the originating orthodontist.This was an excuse. I asked if she provided this service to her other invisalign patients after they completed their treatments, and why would it be an issue with me? Someone, who is willing to pay whatever fee she would have requested. She could not give me an answer and just said she will not remove the attachments and that I should work with another dentist. At this point, I am clearly upset and it's starting to become a shouting match. I told her this was all about "money" for her. I was willing to pay her for the attachment removal but it was pennies to the amount of funds she would have received if I agreed to sign up for and pay for invisalign with her office. This experience was unprofessional and unnecessary because I would have gone to another dentist if I was told up front that she would not perform the removal. And all of this simply because I would not pay her firm over 2 times more for my teeth strengthening services. Also, This is despite the fact that I told her that I would continue to utilize the services at her office like I have been doing for several years and that I wanted her to perform another (different) dental procedure with her in the future. In the end, I agree as a business owner you have every right to turn away service. But you cannot bully people into paying for services that they do not want to pay twice as much for or may not have the financial capability to do so. Plus is this how you treat your "long standing" patients? I would have stayed with your office and probably paid more in the future for future treatments/cleanings etc. Lastly, technology is changing the landscape of several industries not just dentistry and if you can't keep up and learn to adapt, then good luck in the future. I have been going to this dentist since 2012. Dr Azar is one of the best dentists I have experienced. Her and her staff are welcoming and friendly to all patients. I came here to get the Invisalign treatment for my teeth. This dentist is pretty pricey, depending on your insurance but the service is high quality. I ran into a problem with this practice one time which resulted me in rating it a 4/5. Overall, the service is great. read more

I went to this dentist once for a cleaning and check-up. The hygienist gave me the quickest cleaning I've ever had and insisted I come in for another 'deep cleaning' (which of course involved another co-pay). Then she tried to upsell me on buying invisalign teeth straighteners. Then, the dentist came and didn't check my teeth or try to confirm that I needed a 'deep cleaning'; she also just tried to upsell me on invisalign. I cancelled the appointment for the deep cleaning, and then, they sent me a bill for not coming to the deep cleaning and not cancelling the appointment. Since then, they've been sending me emails every six months to come in for a cleaning, and there's no way to unsubscribe from these emails; you have to call their office to get them to stop harassing you... read more

Friendly, communicative, and very quick to see you for your scheduled (and possibly unscheduled) appointment. Their communication is excellent. Michelle texted me when I was due for a cleaning. Considering how stubborn I am to go to the dentist, her follow-ups led me to commit to an appointment. She texted me 48 hours prior with confirmation, and another text two hours before my appointment. Hygienist Elizabeth is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. She went out of her way to get to know me and ask questions. She made me feel comfortable and was very thorough in her cleaning. She called over the Denist, Dr. Azita, at the end of the cleaning. There was some necessary follow-up work I needed to get done that I put off the last time I visited. Without an appointment, they checked their calendar and were able to take me right then and there! Dr. Azita was very thorough and friendly, as was her assistant Teresa. They both laughed at my corny jokes - so I know they're good people. At the end of the appointment, Mr. Azaf was very kind. He asked how everything went and then went out of his way to double check my insurance information for me. I'll be back to Montclair South Dental for as long as I'm living in the area. No xrays. No reason. I never saw the dentist- not even sure she was on site. The hygienist was rough- caught my lips and tongue with the scaling tool and seemed oblivious to it. I have to say that I am extremely dissapointed, with the Dentist who treated me at this office. I have went into their office with a crack molar and the dentist who I believe was a resident because I cant call him a dentist injected me 5 times with novocaine, yes 5 times because I wasn't taking the anesthesia I was telling him that I was not numbed that I was feeling everything plus he cut my gum. He only waited 10 minutes for the anesthesia in and I kept telling him that I was not numbed enough that I . He was so scared that he even told the girl in the front desk do not charge her. This never happened to me I have been treated by Dr. Azar and she numbed me with just one shot I never had a problem with her. I had a swollen face for one week and the office did not bother for once to call me to see how I was doing The lack of unprofessionalism from this young Male Dentist and the Manager for not reaching out to me. I would not recommend this Dentist Office and that dentist needs to be fired he could have killed me with so much novocaine given to me. Came here from google recommendation. I dont know what the hype is about. Dr Azar was definitely nice, seems knowledgeable. I dont think its the most hygienic place. Gloved hands onto xray machine into my mouth back on to all the surfaces on the xray machine. I doubt they sanitize all surfaces. They arent heavily plasticized (plastic coverings on all surfaces for sanitation) like the other offices ive been to. So a little gross. Overall the office looked clean but i doubt ill be comfortable enough to go back in here knowing their hands will be in my mouth. They ask for 'copay' up front before they even bill the insurance so be careful on double paying. read more

I have a horrible experience. Though Dr. Azar was nice, she is not experienced in bonding and putting in a crown. My crown fell out while I was eating and that was painful. She shaved down my teeth without my permission and now I have a sensitivity to hot and cold drinks. I have an appointment with another dentist to try to correct her mistakes. Beware! read more

This dentist is unethical. I believe she intentionally misdiagnosed me to milk my insurance. When I switched to a cheaper dental plan this was the only dentist on the plan in town, so I went in for a routine cleaning. After an on the spot x-ray (which didn't need to be done--I'd had one in the last 5 years) and a perfunctory look at my teeth the dental assistant told me that I had advanced periodontal disease that required immediate, expensive deep cleaning that would need to be repeated every 4 months for the rest of my life. This, after years of excellent dental health and a routine exam just 6 months earlier that showed no significant problems. The receptionist immediately typed up a bill of the costs for treatment while I was still sitting in the chair. It was only when I said I wanted a second opinion that Dr. Azar was brought in, and she demanded to know why I wasn't willing to spend money on my dental health. When I told her that my former dentist never found any evidence of periodontal disease, she asked if he was old, and suggested that older dentists aren't as "up" on the latest in diagnosis. That same day I went back to my old dentist, who re-checked my teeth for free. He again found no evidence of periodontal disease. I switched to a new dentist in the plan, and he said my teeth were in great shape, no periodontal disease or cavities or anything. South Dental is a bad practice, geared at fleecing patients who are not knowledgeable about dentistry and who don't ask questions. read more

I would be very careful with the billing and service. Dr. Azar said I needed a root canal. They charged my Payflex account over $700 up front. When I went back for the procedure, the dentist who was supposed to perform it, told me I did not need one. The receptionist said she would credit my account. I left the company I was working for only to return four years later. When I signed up for my benefits and got my Flexible Spending Account set up again, I went to the doctor for a visit and my card was turned down. Turns out Montclair South Dental never credited my account. Instead they drew down the charge like it was a credit even though I no longer had access to the Payflex card. So instead of charging my wife for her and my children's visits, Montclair South Dental charged my old card until they spent all of the $700 then started to charge my wife's Payflex card. I brought this up to Dr. Azar's husband, who handles the accounting and after two weeks of back and forth, he told me he would see me in small claims court. Amazing.
