The chips were a bit better than average, 4 stars. The salsa was much better than expected, 4 stars. The cheese dip was decent, 3.5 stars. The entree, two chalupas, was very fresh and looked appetizing on the plate. When it ate a bit flat, it dawned on me that there was no cheese on either chalupa. The dish was in grave need of the richness and tang that cheese provides. I dumped my salsa on one chalupa and my cheese dip on the other, and the meal was saved. But it seemed I had provided a lot of aid to an entree that should have been self-sufficient. 3 stars. The side of rice was ample, and packed a pungent dose of annato (achiote), the ingredient that gives Spanish rice its characteristic color and flavor pop. 4 stars. I don't like to give bad reviews, but dang! This place missed the mark all together. The highlight of this meal was the chips and salsa. The rest was ehh. I had the El Paso dinner. It could have been really good but it was so not good! The chicken was similar to something you would get out of a bag of chicken fajitas one would buy in the freezer action of a grocery store. It was not cooked like fajita meat, it was reheated chicken. Nasty. Really. My husband ordered beef enchiladas, his go to when trying a new place. They were taste less and just well, meh. The waiter was lackadaisical we never received a refill and never received a check back, we finally got up and went to the register and paid with out a receipt. Would not return It is painfully obvious that no one there has a passion for food or service. Sad really, with different management this place could be great. You've seen this movie before. Monte Alban, apparently a link in a local chain, makes for a relatively generic Americanized Mexican dining experience. The menu is long--typical of the restaurant style--but doesn't really offer any surprises. After several days of eating interstate-exit glop and sampling a few other local dining options whose menus were heavy on carbs and grease, I was hoping for something a little lighter. A big nourishing bowl of Mexican chicken soup pretty much fit that bill, but it was pretty bland--not much seasoning to speak of, and the broth lacked punch. Not much chicken-y intensity there. But it was satisfying enough. Service was friendly and efficient. And as another Yelper here says, the salsa that comes with the chips was very good--fresher and zippier than industry average. The best thing about this Monte Alban location was the feel and decor of the place. Although it's housed in a depressing, chintzy-looking, low-slung strip center, but when you walk through the door a surprisingly spacious and comfortable interior is revealed, with vaulted ceilings, and it's colorful and warmly lit: A pleasant to spot for some casual food and beverages. read more

This restaurant was referred to us by our Air b n b we rented 4 mins up the street. I'm so glad she did. I was impressed with the enchiladas Verde and the chips and salsa. This place was amazing. We rolled up in there with a party of 20 right after leaving some rafting on the Ocoee. We called ahead by 15 minutes and they were accommodating and moved the tables to seat us. The staff was great- friendly, super quick and responsive (especially for a large group). Right after we ordered, the groom of the wedding party realized he needed to get his soon to be bride back for the rehearsal and following dinner. It made it a bit awkward, but the food can right out. It was delish! We had to immediately ask for the check and they brought them right out and split it among the party of 20 into the separate groups. The wedding party members had to get up and leave promptly to get back for rehearsal. The staff was truly amazing. We pretty much ordered everything on the menu. This place was great. Our whitewater rafting guide recommended Monte Alban when we mentioned we were staying near Andrews and they did not disappoint. The enchiladas had a lot of flavor but my absolute favorite was the fresh salsa and cilantro pico that came on the side of the enchiladas. Definitely a must try when staying in Andrews. read more

My son and I were starving and everything in Robbinsville and Andrews closes at 8pm (2000hrs). We saw the sign on at this restaurant and went inside, I used when they closed and was told 9:30pm (2130hrs) but it was 9 at this point... I apologized and we were going to leave but the waiter and owner insisted we stay! Thankful we did we had a great meal, I had Enchiladas Supreme which were incredibly flavorful. We visited here after a band event at Food Truck Friday Series. Very disappointed overall, except for the salsa. It was spicy and delicious. Food was fair but their sister restaurant with the same name in Haiwassee, GA is so much better. This is the first Mexican restaurant that that I've visited that doesn't have frozen margaritas--on rocks, yes, frozen, no. I gave up after the third request for more salsa. The ambiance was nice though. Hadn't seen the Flintstones or Jetsons cartoons in a while. Got there around 9:15pm and they close at 10pm. Also, additional 4% charge for credit card usage. read more

First the positives- this place is adorably decorated - lots of attention to detail and very clean. Service was fantastic - chips were fresh and salsa was good. Positives ended there for us. I had the enchiladas verdes and husband had the ranchero enchiladas- both chicken. They were the worst enchiladas we've ever had and we each could only stomach a few bites off our plates. We took the rest home for our dogs. The chicken was not pulled- just chunks of boiled chicken completely unseasoned. I'm Colombian and make enchiladas all the time and these were just shockingly bad. Great place! We we on vacation and ordered food to go. The steak quesadilla was super good. We also got chicken soft tacos and supreme tacos. Make sure you get some hot salsa if you like hot. It has a great chipotle taste. We recommend this place for sure!!! read more

For the best Mexican around Monte Alban in Andrews is the best! This is a local chain and each one is unique but its something about the Andrews one that keeps drawing me back! Ask any local they will agree, out of all of the Monte Albans this one is the best. If your not sure what to order try the Pancho Special, the Mexican soup, Fajitas for 2 (enough for 3-4 people!) or even a simple Chicken Quesadilla. The salsa and chips is even better here than the others! The staff is great and the owner is especially helpful and friendly to our two year old son. Oh and of course they also give the birthday person the free whip cream in the face if you want to surprise your friend! This place is open late which is nice to find in a small town like Andrews. Oh and if you play soccer the staff plays after work some nights across the street at the town Rec. Park! read more

The service was attentive and the food came out fast, but my last trip I did the sense of being a bit rushed having arrived at 9 when they list closing at 10, kind of a pet peeve of mine. I was born in San Diego and am a Mexican food snob. This place rocks. Carnitas are the BEST I've ever had. I think we vacation in Nantahala just so we can eat at this place multiple times. Jesus knows his business and knows how to work a room. A definate stop if you are travelling thru North Carolina. Have only eaten at the one in Andrews. We ate at the Andrews, NC Monte Alban for the first time 10/12/17. Bottom line: Go for the food, hope for decent service. The food: Absolutely terrific, definitely 5-star. The menu had many, many combinations that were new or different to us (and we cook and eat out Mexican often), and making a choice was difficult. Everything we ordered was delicious (chorizo queso, cheese enchilada, stuffed poblano, grilled rib-eye, and carnitas), and the plates were HUGE. The service: Absolutely horrible. While waiters were checking on tables all around us, no server approached us. I finally left our table and walked to the register and talked to the "hostess," who told a waiter standing nearby to take our order. Past placing the order, the only time we saw a waiter was when our food was delivered. No one checked on us, our water glasses were not re-filled, we didn't get more tortilla chips, and no one brought a bill to our table until I finally again asked the hostess to help. I tipped the hostess, but not the waitstaff. I don't know what the issue was with us--other tables around us seemed to get tended to. I spoke to the manager who was very, very apologetic. We aren't from the area, and it's unlikely we will ever have the chance to go back and give the place another opportunity. read more

Have been here several times and have never been unhappy. The food is served quite quickly and is plenteous and tasty. The ambience is relatively authentic with beautiful tile floors and gorgeous wooden tables. Decorative sombreros add to the decor. I recently had spinal surgery and have been rehabbing at the Valley View Care Center just down the road from the restaurant. My husband was able to bring me out for my first "real"meal in about 5 weeks. It did not disappoint. I ordered a simple lunch platter of a taco and a chili rellano. The cheese on the taco literally melted when it touched my tongue. Absolutely delicious. The meat in both items was beautifully seasoned without being too hot. My husband has been on an Atkins diet for over 20 years and he rarely cheats. However, he loves the salsa here so much that he finished most of a basket of chips! His favorite is the taco salad with plenty of meat. read more

It was only minutes from the time we ordered our food until it was delivered to our table. Our food came out quickly- it was hot, fresh and delicious. As with most Mexican restaurants there seems to be a lack of chorizo based, or optional, main courses. Potato flatas (?) are absent as well. Finding a non-a-lacarte meal with bean burritos is null and void as there always seems to be catch...you can get this just not that. No true customization of any menu item. All is not lost though. The atmosphere is nice. And the hot salsa for your chips is excellent. My review is based on one visit so take it with a grain of salt. Would I go there again, possibly. read more

Brought wrong order and then said it wasn't his fault, the cook messed up! Would not make an exchange. Not a very clean or classy place! Would never go back!!! Don't go!!!!! This is a good little restaurant hidden in a little plaza. We were seated quickly and the service was fast and prompt. The menu is pretty expansive offering many different choices of Mexican food.
