Monte Xanic was the second of two wineries our group visited during the day trip to the Guadalupe Valley. In comparison to the first winery stop (a boutique winery with all wines limited production), this winery was much bigger, more automation, more barrels and a more fancy and contemporary space on par with some of the wineries I've visited in Napa Valley (Sterling, V. Sattui). The winery has the resources needed for more mass production but less charm. There's a beautiful lake in front of the property that not only acts to attract people to the winery, the water is also used to water the plants. On a nice warm day the ideal situation would be to sip wine outside with the view of the lake flanking one side with the winery in another. This is most impressive in the private veranda on the upper floor and makes for a good photo-op. Our tour guide was quite charming and he explained to us Monte Xanic's wines quite well. He went through the vineyard followed by the bottling room, the cellar and finally the "lab". Between each sections we went back to the bar to get more tastings of wine. My only nitpick about him was that I wish he didn't emphasize going back to the bar to top off glasses - winos are usually more sophisticated people that like wine more than just to drink it. I don't have the best memory but I remember that the barrels are specifically the barrels used to make Jack Daniels and they use the barrels purely to taste. My favorite section was the lab. Here people get together in a room trying wines in the cellar to develop what would be the wine profile of a particular grape and vintage. We were served five wines: Sauvignon Blanc, dry Chardonnay, a rose, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cab-Merlot blend. The last wine was from their premium Gran Ricardo line, named after one of the owners and claiming that this line has made them more well-known internationally. It was a smooth red and I can see why it got such praise. As per custom, the wine I got the No1DP was a no-oak chardonnay. It had a little more buttery taste than some of the other no-oak chardonnays I got him. The Sauvignon Blanc was a hit with our group because it is popular with local SD crowds. Supposedly one can find their wines in a Costco in SD. The cheese plate was addicting as I could munch on one of the cheeses - a soft spongy cheese - all day. Though I liked my visit I've seen wineries at an equivalent price point in USD (mid-range) that have better wine offerings and have more of a charm about them, hence a 3 star rating. However I would still recommend Monte Xanic to people if they want to see a bigger winery or a winery more representative of the Guadalupe Valley. read more

So I had reservations for two at 11am and I left my card info that way I couldn't cancel my reservation. on arrival to the gate they guy said that my name wasn't on the reservation list and that they didn't start wine tasting till 1pm, what a disappointment. Their wines are one of our favorites. Top three for el valle the guadalupe; we but won't be back. Im just glad that is not my number one. One of the larger wineries, they have it built up with modern architecture. We were asked at the front gate if we had a "reservation." We didn't know about this so we couldn't enter the large black box building that looks like it's made of string. Instead, we joined the vast amounts of Americans on the pond to sample wine. We could order glasses and bottles here. It's very organized, almost reminded me of Disneyland (for adults). We found a seat at a large wedding party-kind of table. Great place with good selection of wine, but there are lots of cute, smaller wineries to explore. read more

This is a winery with great tasting wines and a nice ambience. The quality of service needs to be improved drastically however. We called ahead to see if it would be possible to just buy wine without a tasting reservation, and were told yes. Unfortunately though, the gate guard was extremely rude and not understanding of the situation, even mentioning that we were lying and never actually called (we did). Touristy but beautiful. Gate entry is off-putting but the vineyards and grounds are very well manicured. They were very busy when we were there and they have an awkward prepay tasting set up that we had to wait 10 or more minutes in line for. Saving grace was the girl pouring for us, she was very personable and helpful about the Valle and what it had to offer. I believe her name was Gabrielle. There are better wines in the Valle but no real complaints on their whole set up. Great start to our day. read more

We were recommend this winery by two of our waiters at different locations. We thought we'd give it a try. The estate sits beautifully on top of a hill overlooking the vineyards and lake they have. There's outdoor and indoor seating. The only downside is you have to make reservation before visiting if you want to do any wine tasting. If you don't have a reservations you can buy wine by the glass or bottle. Luckily their wine was pretty good and you can go wrong with the view. read more

While I had a lovely time, I probably would have appreciated this winery more BEFORE visiting the exceptional boutique winery, Trevista. Monte Xanic makes a large variety of wines and is more for mass production as the one we were at earlier that day was very limited but intimate. Anywho, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and the scenery was gorgeous. I liked how saw many parts of the property. We tried two reds, two whites, and a Rose. My personal favorite was the Sauvignon Blanc. I brought four bottles home since they were only $15 each. The wines were delicious and quality but you could definitely tell it wasn't made with the same love as the $40 bottles at Trevista. I'm not a wine tour connoisseur but I enjoyed myself and learned a lot. read more

WOW! So glad I decided to check this place out on my recent trip to Valle! I made a reservation via email! MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A RESERVATION! If you don't have a reservation you can still go in but they send you to this bottom seating area by the lake, still nice, but not as nice as the main tasting area up the hill from the lake. Upon arriving, they have a security guard who checks you to see if you have a reservation then directs you in. We made a reservation for the wine tasting and tour we sampled 4 delicious red wines for about $14 a person ($28) total. The guy who gave us our tour (i wish i remembered his name) gave us an amazing tour probably the best I've gotten compared to other wineries. They do reservations only by the hour not half hour to allow you to get the full experience. How it works is he pours you a tasting and then shows a part of the winery then you get your next tasting and off to see another part. Our guide even gave us tips on how to properly hold a wine glass and how to taste such as sucking in air whilE the wine is in your mouth. He was also open to answering any questions and we did not feel rushed at all compared to other wIneries. There wine cellar is inside a mountain which is also super cool! They have a super cute seating area with a beautiful view of the lake and vineyards. Honestly fell in love with this place and definitely coming back next time I'm in Valle ! They're bottles of wine are also affordable ranging from like $25-$50 bucks ( from the ones i saw could be more expensive) definitely recommend coming here !!! read more

Monte Xanic winery is a beautiful place to visit and they have a great tour. This is actually the first time I got to see how wine is produced. Their elaboration of wine is clearly top notch and sophisticated. Best of all Monte Xanic winery prides itself on being very Mexican!!!! They have a cool gift shop!!!! Wow. This place is a bit further of a drive to get to, but worth it. So many great varieties, great service, beautiful facilities, and a truly awesome view. Closed on Mondays during the offseason, and I recommend calling ahead and making a reservation so they are expecting your arrival at the front gate. My absolute favorite winery in Valle! It's absolutely gorgeous and their whites are to die for. I love every single option from the white taster and always leave with several bottles of wine to enjoy at home! The first time I went was during the week and was able to taste upstairs. The second time was on the weekend and the tasting was only downstairs without a reservation, however we eventually ended up ordering full glasses to enjoy upstairs. It's all about the Sauv Blanc! Chilled and served to perfection. While we weren't able to visit the main building because they were filming, it didn't matter because drinking these fine wines by the lake made everything better. We heard about this spot from our fabulous guide, Jesus, from Baja Luxury Wine Tours and just had to make a stop. The bottles were stored in hollowed out barrels and came with a side of history about the region. As many of you may know, this region was inhabited by Russian immigrants and Mexico is, for the most part, a heterogeneous culture. I'm part of it and so are a bunch of you. So, it's always fascinating to see how different parts blend together to create an identity while integrating parts of the old. The most profound part for me was when our guide told us about the label. While, yes Monte Xanic was named for a Cora Indian word meaning "flower blooming after the first rain, the label and winery make it known that the first initials are MX and print it loud and proud! Bad experience at the time we get there they was asking if we sign in before entrance at the parking lot so nobody was there and second we trying to get into the main building and we supposed to make a reservation or anyone who wants to be at the main building at the top for a wine taste it must be with reservation only otherwise you can go ahead and go by the lake for the wine taste not all the wines you can have by glass they have to buy the bottle of wine means you have to buy the whole bottle of wine not by glass nice view but terrible customer service , price at the menu says 60 by glass and the lady trying to say the price is wrong so the price wll be a 75. Monte Xanic is an absolute must!!!! After exploring valle de Guadalupe a couple of times, I can honestly say that they are my favorite vineyard! Their wines are delicious, their grounds are beautiful but overall their staff and service just tops it. We got a wine tour with José Luis and he went above and beyond, provided us with so much information and was just extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We came on a chilly day where the upstairs winery space was booked for a private event. So we did tastings of everything they had by the pond. The landscaping and pond area is very pretty and charming. The wine is mediocre at best. While the landscape was wonderful the wine was some of our least favorite of our trip. Also I wouldn't come here on a chilly day. There was no coverage from the elements and oddly enough it was still busy and a little chaotic at the tasting area. If you try this place come on a warm and sunny day and get a glass just to enjoy the scenery. read more

There is something here for everyone. We tasted the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rose, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Cab-Merlot blend. My favorites were the Sauvignon Blanc and the Cabernet Sauvignon. Our tour guide was personable and showed us around the property while still making sure we had wine to sip on. We learned about the reservoir that looks like a lake and comes from a handful of wells. We saw the production and barrel rooms and concluded our tasting on the third floor of the winery in a private room. Monte Xanic is perfect for large groups, so invite all your friends. It's also a very picturesque winery, so make sure you have your camera handy. I believe this winery is by appointment only, since we needed to check-in with the person at the gate before they let us in. We were running a bit late and the winery was able to accommodate us. Although the guard did sass us when we arrived by telling us it was about time we showed up. (It was totally warranted, so it was kind of funny.) Monte Xanic wines are now being distributed at Costco in Mexico and San Diego! read more

Visited Monte Xanic winery on July 19, 2018. View of vineyard and tasting room was beautiful as you turn onto private road. Was not expecting to drive along a beautiful large pond. The display of all their grape vines at entrance to tasting room was very impressive. We did make reservations from the US which was a bit confusing. Next time we visit we will opt to sit down near the pond and order a bottle of wine and skip the tasting. Our guide was Louis, he was very informative and friendly. We were running a little late having also made reservations to eat at Deckman's. Because of this Louis shortened our tour to just the cellar. (fine by us) We tasted their 2016 Grenache,2016 Chenin Colombard and 2016 Bodega Vinicola Merlot. We walked away buying two bottles. Another perk that some Mexican wineries do is give you, your tasting glass as a gift. Their tasting fee of $15 usd is inline to California and Oregon wineries. I've had a couple great visits here over the years and their wine is good. However, the last few times I have tried to go I have been denied access at the front gate. Most recently it was mid week (Thursday) and around 330pm and we were told they were doing a "lunch break" for the employees. Other times I have been denied at the gate for various reasons, but I won't go back again. Beautiful winery. The thing I like, even though I don't have kids, is the lake and picnic area at the base of the complex. It is very picturesque. The winery has a beautiful patio where you can relax with a bottle of wine and just enjoy the view. I haven't taken the tour but eventually will need to. This was our third stop on our winery self tour in the valley. The place was pretty empty on a Monday but there were plenty of staff to take care of us. We did the tasting inside since it was pretty chilly but the outside area is beautiful. The tasting area has recently been remodeled and is pretty large so it can fit large groups. The wines were pretty good here. My friend and I both liked the Syrah the best and took some home with us. read more

Stopped by Monte Xanic during our visit to Ensenada on 6/20/16. Nice hot day with a cool breeze. We havent visited any other wineries in the Valle de Guadalupe so my review may be biased but I LOVED this location. It was beautiful, it was open and updated. Lots of selection to choose from. We chose the mixed red/whites package but was given a few extras to try. We ended up enjoying a bottle of Chenin Blanc with a tray of cheese, bread and salami...ah so perfect! We took a bottle of Chenin Blanc and Chenin Colombar home, both are whites and both very good wines. Blanc is sweet while Colombar is more of a Pinot. Cant wait to go back and enjoy a bottle over the view of the grape vines and lagoon. We were only a party of 2 so we didnt need reservation but I would reccomend you do if your group is larger. Also we were unable to do the wine tour because we had not made reservation for that so make sure you mention you want the tour when you call them.
