Still on the hunt for authentic Jamaican food after my longtime go to spot closed, I decided to try Montego Bay Caribbean based on the reviews. I ordered the jerk chicken with rice and peas, cabbage, and plantains. I also added a beef patty. Service was quick and friendly, and my food was ready without a long wait. Let me just say, this is what authentic jerk is supposed to taste like. The rice and peas were well seasoned and balanced. The cabbage was cooked perfectly, tender but not mushy. The portion sizes were generous, easily enough for more than one meal. The jerk chicken was the standout. It was seasoned to perfection, bold, spicy, and full of that signature smoky depth that defines true Jamaican jerk. The heat level was right, the flavor layered, and every bite delivered exactly what I was hoping for. The beef patty was decent, though not as memorable as the jerk. Still solid, just not the star of the meal. After trying several places in search of authentic flavor, I can confidently say I have found my new go to spot. I will definitely be back. Went here to get lunch while working in Sanford for the day and the service was great! The oxtail was well cooked and had a good flavor! The rice was just right and the soup had a very good flavor! We didn't dine in but while waiting in our food inside the restaurant definitely has that Jamaican feel and vibe. I have gotten food to go from here twice last week. Both times I had the oxtail, my only complaint with the dish is there is hardly any gravy. It is a bit dry. The macaroni is delicious despite it being served broken up. I also tried the beef patty and it was perfection! Every time I have called the phone it has been answered promptly and the service is fast. I found the staff to be polite as I was polite to them, however I dis witness them shame a few people who were rude. I would recommend this place and plan on visiting again. read more

Today I asked for veggie patties and the cashier said that there wasn't none. Then cook told me that I would have to call 30 minutes ahead since they don't sell as fast. I got two medium plates of the exact same like the picture there. They just give you a fork rolled up in a napkin. The cook asked me if I wanted juice and I said that I had the ginger beer(which taste bad). There is no seasoning on the food. They could have at least put black pepper on the food.They are so stingy with plantains and the cornbread is so small. Also yesterday I saw the cook/cashier complaining about a customer in front of my face. No wonder my mom told me that Jamaicans don't like this place. I'm never coming there again. I really love this place. Since we moved to Sanford we have been looking for local places to eat in or take out. We really found a gem here. The owner is so friendly and the food is delicious and authentic. We tried the Curry Chicken, Ox Tails, and Jerk Chicken all with rice and peas, cabbage and cornbread and they were all amazing. I'll tell you that it is a bit spicy but it's Jamaican food so there you go. We're also fans of his Goat Soup which he only has on some weekends. You have to try this place. Me and my husband ordered take out on two different occations, the food was good. The customer service was awful. The first time, we asked what was a good choice having never eaten here before and the lady was short and rude and pointed to the menu. The second time we called ahead to order, we ordered the brown stew chicken and the jerk chicken, the guy on the phone told us it needed to be cooked and to call back in 40mins. We decided to wait, called back and we were told by the same guy They didn't make the brown stew chicken they made curry chicken inside and we could have that. I've tried Jamaican food so many times always hoping that I'll really enjoy or find that flair, those exotic flavors of the Islands, but yet again disappointed. Maybe this is some really amazing food and I'd have to be Jamaican to really understand or appreciate this food. I don't know? I've had some amazing BBQ Jerk chicken once in RI, back in 1997, I've been chasing those flavors ever since with absolutely no luck! I even went to Jamaica for jerk Chicken. Anyway, every time I've had Jamaican rice, it's been bland, cabbage, bland, oxtail some flavors but no flair, same with the Jerk chicken, tasty, but no flavors that really dance in my mouth! The only thing that was good, were the fried plantain, but those flavors always remain the same, anyone can fry plantains and the flavor is always the same unless you marinade it with something or syrup it up. This is my second time going to this restaurant the first time was better than the second dew to the fact they didn't have what we wanted,long story short I got food poisoning from eating there oxtail with rice and peas. I'm Jamaican so i know good food this was left over they reheated i know something was wrong when i saw all the steem coming from my plate but never the less I ate it anyways only to get sick. I've been coming here for years and it's almost perfect. It's tiny with really only 4 seats if you want to eat in. I wish it was a little bigger and had fountain drinks so could refills after using too much Jamaican hot sauce. The family that owns it are very friendly and happy to answer questions. I usually get the jerk chicken but the curry goat rocks too. My oldest daughter loves the brownstew chicken as it's not spicy at all. Ditto for the oxtail. The prices are very, very reasonable and it's clearly homemade fair. I think paying $7.50 for a big lunch of home cooked chicken, rice and peas, cabbage and plantains versus almost $6.00 for fast food garbage is a no brainer. I'd give it 5 stars but for no fountain drinks and sometimes they have the TV set on televangelists. Seriously can't stand a televangelist. This is hands down the best place to get authentic Jamaican food!!!! I love that it's a mom and pop, it's clean, hearty portions at a great price. My favorite is the jerk chicken, rice and peas with the cabbage. The plantains are amazing, if it's your lucky day you might score a piece of rum cake which is homemade.....thee best!!!!!!
